      5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully-Written and Insightful Book.......2005-05-30

I have long been interested in the use of plants by various cultures around the world, and it was this fascination that led me to Harvest McCampbell's wonderful book.
Sacred Smoke details the sacred practice of smudging, the ceremonial burning of aromatic herbs by many Native American tribes.

The book offers detailed information on eighteen plants: Balsam Fir, Bayberry, California Bay, cedar, Desert Sage, Epazote, Fennel, Hemlock, Juniper. Mint, Mullein, Mugwort, Pine, Spruce, Sweet Grass, Uva Ursi, Wild Tobacco and Yerba Santa. Information includes cultural uses, growing tips, a list of nurseries where plants may be obtained, and even an extensive listing of related web links. The information is detailed and very well organized.

However, it is the personal accounts by the author that makes this book so special. I particularly loved the section on suffering. She writes of embracing suffering instead of trying to rise above it: "The mosquito suffers in the dragonfly's jaws so that there will always be dragonflies. The dragonfly suffers in the little bird's beak so there will always be little birds. The little bird suffers in the hawk's talons so there will always be hawks. I suffer the bite of the mosquito, so there will always be dragonflies, little birds and hawks."

In short, this is a beautifully-written, insightful book that deserves a space on every nature lover's bookshelf.

      5 out of 5 stars A deeply respectful accounting.......2003-06-17

Sacred Smoke: The Ancient Art Of Smudging For Modern Times by Harvest McCampbell (who began her studies of herbs, smudging, and ritual with her Iroquois Onondaga Oswegatchie grandmother) is an informative and informed, step-by-step, "user friendly" guide to the spiritual practice of burning herbs, as undertaken by Native Americans for generations. A deeply respectful accounting of this enlightening and meditative practice, Sacred Smoke is a unique and enthusiastically recommended contribution to Native Am-erican Studies reference collections and Metaphysical Studies reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for for beginners AND experienced herbalists.......2002-11-08

Recently, amazon.com delivered to my door a very wonderful book... Sacred Smoke by Harvest McCampbell is a primer and reference text regarding how to identify, collect, and even grow a wide range of sacred plants used for smudging. In her book, Harvest has succeeded in writing of sacred things without "crossing the line." She totally avoids being cloaked in shadowy mysticism and strives to communicate facts which can then be applied to one's own traditions and teachings.

I found this book to be valuable on two levels... As an "evening's read" I felt like Harvest was sitting next to me having a conversation about her grandmother and the wisdom she passed on regarding sacred plants. As a reference work, I found Sacred Smoke to be filled with well documented herbal facts and sources that are organized for easy reference.

One of the difficulties any author faces with works of this type is how to impart knowledge on paper that can really only be learned through experience. Harvest succeeds marvelously in this by introducing concepts, then directing the reader to other sources for further research - including the internet - all the while continually reminding us to seek out our own elders and find our own traditions.

In short, Harvest has crafted a book that should be of great interest both to beginning students and experienced herbalists.

It's been a long time since I've found a book I was so happy to have in my library for many years to come!

      5 out of 5 stars Smudging 101.......2002-04-15

All that you need to know about the art of smudging (purification with sacred plants and fire) is contained within the pages of this well-written, informative, and interesting book. One of the most highly respected and nationally known Native American herbalists today, Harvest began her training at the knee of her Native grandmother. She has been healing and educating others for over 20 years, and few herbalists today can claim the scope of knowledge that she possesses. Harvest wrote this greatly expanded second edition of her popular first self-published work from the seclusion of her home in a small northern California native community. As an herbalist and an educator, Harvest is unsurpassed in her knowledge and skills as well as her ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. If you buy one book about herbs this summer, let it be Sacred Smoke.

        Book Description

Language has always been central to the meaning and exploitation of photographic images. However, the various types and "styles" of language associated with different photographic genres have been largely overlooked. This book considers the nature of photography, examining the language used in titles, captions and commentaries, particularly as they relate to documentary photography, photojournalism and fashion photography. The Spoken Image addresses the question of how the photograph communicates its message, with or without the aid of language. The book looks at the work of film-makers such as Antonioni and Greenaway to contrast filmic methods of narration with those of photography. Scott concludes that photography has arrived at a level of communicative sophistication equal to that of modern textual narratives, in conjunction with which it often works.

As a crazed reader of much photographic literature I was delighted to see what Bell thought was most worth addressing. He's provided thoughtful and comprehensive insights about the value and meaning of imagery in our culture. I appreciated his straightforward style and his managed ways of dealing with intricacies and subtleties of narrative and visual literacy.

He has walked through the valley of death and man's depravity. Now war photographer Mitch Coltrane is trying to escape his memories. As he loses himself in a world of art and obsession in L.A., a haunting photograph of a woman pulls him into the mystery of a beautiful starlet during Hollywood's golden age. But past and present are about to collide. A living woman, eerily like the woman in his photograph, comes into his life. So does a killer--straight from the hell that Coltrane survived. Deception, double identities, and murderous revenge will shatter his new life and force Coltrane to perform the ultimate act of courage--not with a camera, but with a gun.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Double the Adventure, Two Stories in One Novel.......2007-02-19

Double Image is one novel where the reader follows the main character, photographer Mitch Coltrane through one storyline for about a third of the novel then moves onto another for the final two thirds. Morrell keeps readers gripped through the pages which they'll keep turning until the final one. There are plenty of twists along the way. A little bit unrealistic in parts yes, but you won't be able to put Double Image down. A great read also check out Morrell's other great novels such as First Blood, The Protector, Long Lost, Creepers and Burnt Sienna.

Coltrane is an award winning photographic reporter who has taken pictures of atrocities around the world with his latest assignment having him lying for days on a hillside as he watches through the viewfinder corpses being dug up and destroyed from a ethnic cleansing mass grave as well as further barbaric crimes being undertaken by Serbian Dragan Ilkovic. Discovered he barley makes it out of the country with his life, the photographs are published and Ilkovic is exposed as the Hitler wannabe he is. As a result of these events however Coltrane however has evaluated his life's work, why he wanted to be a photographer in the first place. He sees nothing worthwhile in his subject matter so far. His life long hero Packard has an exhibition of his work and Coltrane is shocked to find his images although technically perfect as ugly as his own which he tells him. Soon Coltrane is surprised when he is asked is to do a comparison of Packard's early work of a series of houses by taking photographs of them today. His life seems to be turned around, he couldn't be happier until he realises he has a violent stalker, who isn't happy about recent Bosnian photographs. He also finds a secret room in one of his subject matter houses a home he decided to purchase and inside pictures of the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. He will do whatever he can to find out all he can about her.

        5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2005-10-31

David Morrell has done it once again with this book--he's truly outdone himself this time. When reading the book, one would wonder why on earth we've gone nearly halfway through the story before the sudden change in plot. The reason is obvious--the title gives much of it away. Most of Morrell's previous novelis have been international thrillers. And why not? That's what he's known for

5 out of 5 stars Keeps You Guessing.......2004-06-09

You know when a book promises `surprising' twists, and you are then able to forecast what's going to happen next, which is disappointing? "Double Image" won't disappoint you. As I read the over 400 pages in this novel, I truly had no idea what would happen to the main character, Mitch Coltrane, and that was refreshing. This book has an expansive plot - you could argue too expansive - that moves from Eastern Europe, to California, to Mexico, and interweaves several subplots involving war crimes, stalking, and premeditated murder. Coltrane, a professional photographer, starts off the novel by photographing a war criminal whose deeds are being investigated by the UN. He succeeds, but pays a heavy price. He also encounters a noted photographer, Randolph Packard, who draws him into completing a project Packard began in the 1920s-30s, photographing unique houses in Los Angeles. A simple project, on the surface, which leads to Coltrane's obsession with a woman Packard secretly photographed in the 1940s, an actress named Rebecca Chance. When Coltrane himself becomes obsessed with Rebecca through the 50-year-old photos, he discovers she mysteriously disappeared, leading him to search for what happened to her. Author David Morrell handles the complex plot well, and although a lot of action is crammed into a short period of time, there's enough realism in the characters and situations to keep you reading and caring about what's going to happen next. The final section of the book is truly surprising as the mystery of what happened to Rebecca Chance is revealed, and the legacy of her relationship with two men obsessed by her - three men, if you count Coltrane. Worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars It is a compelling read!.......2003-04-26

I have never read David Morrell's books before and this is my first introduction to it. It was very interesting and I had a hard time putting it down at times. And I love how it was two stories (or two cases) in the book ~~ two chases for Coltrane to live through!

Coltrane, a photographer, is caught photographing mass burial grounds in Bosnia and endured through one hell of which he survived. Then as he thought he was free to enjoy life again ~~ he runs into a reknown photographer who commissioned him to take pictures like his first famous series. Then Packard died ~~ leaving behind a mystery about the most beautiful face in his collection. Coltrane ends up trying to solve that mystery only to find himself in danger. It was a fairly quick read ~~ full of twists and turns! Just when you thought you solved the dilemma ~~ you were taken for a surprise and compelled to read more.

If you are into mysteries, this book is a great one! It's great for those beach reads too ~~ not too dark on the mind or spirits either ~~ but not that slow ~~ so pick it up and enjoy!

        4-25-03

4 out of 5 stars War Crimes, Romance, Coincidences, Love, Fear and Suspense.......2002-04-10

This was a great book by David Morrell, in fact a double book as it had two distinct halves, one almost mirroring the other.

The story begins in Bosnia during the violent years of the mid-nineties. Professional, award-winning photographer, Mitch Coltrane, is hiding in a pit, three feet wide, seven feet long and three feet deep which smells of loam, mold and urine. He has already been waiting 36 hours and is prepared to wait longer . His aim is to photograph the evil Bosnian Serb leader Dragan Ilkovic exhuming bodies of innocent victims from a mass grave for removal and disposal elsewhere. The photographic evidence, should he succeed in getting it without being caught, should enable the International Courts or War Crimes Commission to convict Ilkovic and lock him away for a very long time. Eventually Coltrane's patience is rewarded as Ilkovic arrives and the horror of the subsequent events leaps out through the pages.

The story then takes on a more sedate theme, giving the reader time to relax and enjoy the book as Coltrane begins a fascinating photographic project back in California with the help of his beautiful girlfriend, Jennifer. However, the tension, suspense and horror gradually return, accelerating through the chapters, to another climax and the conclusion of the first "half" of the book. In this section, the detailed knowledge of author Morrell of cameras and photography is evident and he weaves this technical thread through the story without in any way confusing or boring the reader - in fact the very opposite.

As the second "half" of the story unfolds, our hero Coltrane becomes fascinated with, entranced by, obsessed with and ultimately seduced by the irresistible new heroine Tash. The unstoppable development of their relationship and the vivid descriptions of the inner and outer beauty of Tash are described in the most convincing way. It is excellent imaginative writing of the highest calibre. It is not long before terror and fear return, becoming an overwhelming backdrop to the saga. More and more, the second half of the story mirrors the first half in a coincidental but nevertheless believable manner.

It is a very clever book in structure, style, content and presentation. It captures the reader's attention from start to finish and leaves you wanting to read it again for another helping of imagination, romance and fear. Nothing less than true escapism.

Although he had reported from some of the most dangerous places on earth, none were more dangerous than Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Few journalists dared venture there, but Ian Stewart was one of them. On January 10, 1999, Stewart and two colleagues were ambushed as they drove through the streets of Freetown. One of his colleagues was killed instantly, and Stewart, shot in the head, was left paralyzed and clinging to life. Airlifted to London, he has since made a remarkable recovery.

Freetown Ambush is the unforgettable, moving and at times terrifying story of a war correspondent who became a casualty of the war he covered, but who survived - against all odds - to tell the story.

              5 out of 5 stars Freetown Ambush.......2002-03-24

Through a year as a journalist on the front lines of various African wars, Ian Stewart allows us into the person behind the byline -- the struggle to remain a detached observer while still remaining human, and then through the struggle for life and recovery itself after he is shot in the head while on assignment in Sierra Leone. While Stewart is the continuity from chapter to chapter, the stories that brought him to Africa in the first place are always front and centre. The background to each war zone is woven in, to ensure that while we are reading about his observations and struggles, we also are reading the stories that were (often) ignored by our daily papers in the first place. Stewart's writing style manages to turn what are sometimes very heavy, heart-wrenching and tragic events, into a fascinating read, one that is hard to put down. I definitely recommend this book.

              5 out of 5 stars A timely read.......2002-02-28

This book gave me new insight into what makes journalists tick and a new understanding of African politics. I must admit to paying little attention before.
A thoroughly good read filled with moments of horror, excitement and humor.
The author offers us a glimpse of what it is like to suffer a brain injury and the road to recovery.
If you like adventure and human interest written in a crisp style this book is for you.
Looking forward to the next one.

              5 out of 5 stars A rare mixture.......2002-02-19

Freetown Ambush offers a rare mixture of the excitement and adventure of "on the edge" journalism (and a sprinkle of travel writing), with cultural and personal sensitivity. The story Stewart tells of his year as a war correspondent and bureau chief for the Associated Press in West Africa takes us through horrors of war that most of us (thankfully) will never experience, but with an awareness that we (the public) need to know more than the events - we need to know the local people, and hear their voices. Stewart adds to this compelling mixture his own personal journey from surviving a rebel ambush that lodged a bullet in his brain, through recovery from brain injury and ultimately to reclaiming his life. Although the book educates us about "small African countries and distant wars" that most of the public doesn't know exist, in the end, the book inspires us to reclaim life, as Stewart, and the citizens of those far off countries do.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book - Must Read!.......2002-02-17

This is an exciting, sad, funny and compelling book about a war correspondent - adrenaline junky who chases his dreams of being a big time journalist. The first part of the book is about his adventures, and he writes with great respect and care, as well as humor, about people in war torn countries, about historical conflicts, about civilians caught in the crossfire. The second part of the book (and this isn't a big secret but don't miss the amazing x-ray of his head!!!) is about how he was shot in his head covering a story in Sierra Leone and his tough recovery. He's introspective, thoughtful and nice. This book will keep you up at night, and you'll definitely be passing it from friend to friend, saying 'You've got to read this.'
