Is it the grail for design? No. Will it help with design? Yes. Should you buy it?
Well, that's up to you and your skill level. I always appreciate art history that has details, techniques and philosophy that you can incorporate in your design. I bought many books from amazon. A lot of the books are good but I really suggest you read comments and ratings to see if you should buy.

Nagy's perception of space is something that is good to read.

4 out of 5 stars Of interest to designers and non-designers.......2006-02-25

This book, considered an important work by many, was out of print for some years. Dover has recently republished it which is great for students of design.

It's easy to read and points to the rich ideas Moholy-Nagy wanted to share with the world.

Book Description

Unity of art and technology

Born and educated in Germany, Walter Gropius (1883-1969) belongs to the select group of architects that massively influenced the international development of modern architecture. As the founding director of the Bauhaus, Gropius made inestimable contributions to his field, to the point that knowing his work is crucial to understanding Modernism. His early buildings, such Fagus Boot-Last Factory and the Bauhaus Building in Dessau, with their use of glass and industrial features, are still indispensable points of reference. After his emigration to the United States, he influenced the education of architects there and became, along with Mies van der Rohe, a leading proponent of the International Style.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction and Value.......2005-08-30

The German Publishing Company, Taschen has just introduced a series of paperback monographs highlighting the works of the Twentieth Century's great architects. This series includes books about Le Corbusier, Nuetra, Aalto and Gaudi to name but a few.

The series follows a standard format. They are 96 pages long and they begin with an introductory biographical chapter. The books then move onto very short chapters that focus on the architect's iconic buildings. The writing is concise and the photographs are first class. The quality of publishing is up to the usual Taschen high standards.

Walter Gropius was one of the great architects of the Twentieth Century. Love him or hate him, there can be no question that his influence on world culture was profound. He was a powerful force in architecture and art for nearly 70 years. If you want to be even minimally knowledgable about modern architecture, you have to know about Walter Gropius. This book is a great introduction to the man and his work. Once again, Taschen hits another home run. Highly recommended.

Book Description

One of the most important books on the modern movement in architecture, The New Architecture and the Bauhaus poses some of the fundamental problems presented by the relations of art and industry and considers their possible, practical solution. Gropius traces the rise of the New Architecture and the work of the now famous Bauhaus and, with splendid clarity, calls for a new artist and architect educated to new materials and techniques and directly confronting the requirements of the age.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone into design.......2002-06-11

In one of my graphic design classes, we studied Bauhaus design. I was fascinated by Walter Gropius' designs and decided to do a report on him (if you can ever visit his house in MA, you will be awed to see his theories put into practice!). When I found and read this book in my college library I knew I had to buy it. It was out of print when I ordered it, but worth the wait. This book is a must read for all architecture/art history/graphic design students.

Just knowing that everything in this book came directly from Gropius hand is fascinating. It's a look into an aspect of design/architecture that biographies and history books just can't give you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Substance.......2001-06-21

I've found great substance with your book, "The New Architecture and the Bauhaus". It was brilliant and very informative. I was fascinated by the analysis of 20th Century Modern architecture and the history of its development. I recommend this book highly for anyone interested in modern design, or the courage of the indomitable human spirit. Gropius fought against mediocrity, mindless repetition and the numbing Status Quo. This book deserves to be read.

The photographs of The Boulder House featured on pages 40-41 credited to Hart W. Empie are not his photos. Empie is a professional photographer and would not have allowed a paper trash bag to appear in one of his images. Further, the image on page 41 is reversed. The reproduction of the photos of The Boulder House is of the poorest quality. Other images are blurred as well. (see p. 161) Didn't anyone edit this publication?

5 out of 5 stars Bringing Modernism back to public eye.......1999-11-10

I completely disagree with the review previously posted. Modernism was spawned in response to social issues such as homelessness, poverty, and affordability that are still very much with us today. Its representatives such as Gropius and Le Corbusier were concerned with improving living conditions for ordinary people--not building huge, ornate structures for the wealthy. Moreover, this book is largely about current practitioners of Modernism, not the original architects. It shows that social concern in architecture is thriving around the world. One of the reasons architecture is undervalued in the United States is precisely because of public perception that architects are the lackeys of corporations and the Donald Trumps in our culture. The Snibbes resoundingly document the alternative.

          1 out of 5 stars a misunderstanding of a cultural moment.......1999-10-31

This book represents a misunderstanding of a cultural moment on behalf of its writers. Modernism was the spirit of a certain time and condition--and should not be the focus of contemporary written work. Unfortunately we have much larger problems today.

Can you design the one that will win? Let's Draw Manga: Transforming Robots teaches artists to turn simple shapes, like cubes and cylinders, into the ultimate fighting machines. Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars Professional-quality art, but..........2005-01-24

It's obvious professional mecha toy artists worked on this book. The book is packed with well-rendered mecha and clear diagrams on the transformation process. You learn how to break down a normal, everyday vehicle and fold it into a robot with a minimum of artistic "cheating" with proportions.

While most how-to-draw books try to simplify the drawing of a complex subject, this book attempts to complicate the process of drawing over-simplified mechs. Remember those Go-bots that were neat, but not as complex or organic as the Transformers? Plex designed them and it shows. The book teaches you how to design simple, clunky Gobots and Power Rangers robots that can easily be translated into toys. If this is what you want, this book may be for you. If you want a greater variety of mecha styles to learn, or more inspiration on how to come up with your own styles, I'd recommend the great books by Sherard Jackson of Antarctic Press and the How to Draw Manga volumes translated from Japanese published by Graphic-Sha: "Giant Robots" by Hikaru Hayashi and "Mech. Drawing" by Katsuya Yamakami.

The pro-Plex propaganda smattered throughout the book reads like a corporate statement of a company about to go IPO. You shouldn't have to pay so much for a blatant advertisement.

Buy the book if you really want to draw transforming robots and like the particular design aesthetic that Plex embraces.

4 out of 5 stars A useful introduction to drawing transformable mecha........2004-10-17

The first thing that is readily apparent upon flipping through the book is that the presentation is very straightforward and to the point. There is a LOT of artwork and comparatively little text, which presents a good step-by-step visual tutorial for drawing.

There are a great many types of transforming robots discussed in the book, with one or more examples for each. Everything from aircraft to cars to insects to dinosaurs, and more.

The art quality is very good, with an obviously professional hand behind the pen.

There are a couple things that detract from this book, however. Firstly, there is almost no reference to the mechanics behind the transformations - no hydraulics, gears, etc. The book's origins in the toy business are evident here. Second, there are no references to other mainstream transformers - like Macross Valkyries, Transformers, etc.

Even with these minor quibbles though, I still have to give this book 4 out of 5. It can be a very good introduction to drawing transforming robots. Just be aware that it's an introduction, and not an advanced guide!

Let's Draw Manga: Transforming Robots, is a great book, written by a notable company. The moment I opened the book, I knew that I was going to learn alot of things, and I was very excited. I am one who is also getting into the manga biz, and I also love to learn whatever I can, from what ever can teach me. And this book showed me that I can take practically any object in this world, and turn it into a robot.

By using the techniques they show you in this book, you are able to turn planes, trains and automobiles into any kind of robot imaginable. And with the techniques they show you on how to transform a animal, the possiblities are quite endless, depending on your limit of imagination. By using the tips and tricks they taught me, I was able to transform a PlayStation1 into a robot!

I found this book very promising in my future as a manga artist, and I'm sure you would be able to learn as much as I, or even more.

2 out of 5 stars Uninspiring for general use. OK for researching PLEX........2004-08-03

The book has a good premise, and the cover art is interesting. Unfortunately, the contents between the covers fail to live up to the promise.

If you can avoid choking on the force-fed propaganda that the PLEX company is, and always has been, the only company in the world that makes transforming robots, you'll be tripped up by the boring designs and uninspired art. While there is good art and the occasional basic concept to be found, they won't be on the same pages.

There are several much better books on the same subject. If you must consider purchasing this volume, please get hold of a copy and flip through it first before committing to purchase.

What drags this book up from the depths of uselessness is that it's a rough guide to the way PLEX designers think. If you need to sketch a couple of robots that mimick the simplistic PLEX look, this book gives you some design boundaries for avoiding too much mechanical elegance or visual appeal.

Written with professional and amateur photographers in mind, this guide approaches Photoshop from the technical and artistic standpoint of traditional photography. Rather than emphasizing how to distort or create unusual or outlandish digital effects, it explores the use of Photoshop to achieve very realistic photographic images. In-depth instruction illustrates how to duplicate traditional photography and darkroom effects and techniques such as hand coloring; dodging, burning, and tinting; and the use of alternative films, specialized filters, lenses, and camera accessories. Techniques can be used on a Mac or PC with any version of Photoshop 4.0 or later.

I like this book very much because it starts with the basics of Adobe Photoshop, and it also starts with learning different effects and techniques you can start to use right away. This is a fun way to learn - you really feel like you are accomplishing something. Perkins and Grant use layman language without making the reader feel like a dummy; illustrations and examples of what is being talked about are plentiful.

I turned to this book many times when I needed to learn a Photoshop technique in a hurry, although I have several Adobe Photoshop books on hand. I knew with Tradional Photographic Effects With Adobe Photoshop I could do what I needed to with little confusion and searching.

Along with clear and concise instructions for working on your photographs, a section covers input and output techniques.

5 out of 5 stars A guide to using the "digital darkroom." This one's a must........2001-11-11

This book pulls out all the stops, presenting helpful, practical information vital to creating perfect prints. It is well illustrated with color images and screenshots, making any digital-photographic endeavor--from sandwiching to vignetting to creating "infrared" images--a quick and painless process. I especially appreciated the reader-friendly organization of the book. I could flip to any page to find a great technique, mastering the steps at my own pace without wading through a maze of unimportant, high-brow digital jargon. This book is inspiring!

                  Book Description

Frances Power Cobbe (1822-1904) is the most important nineteenth-century British writer and activist not heretofore treated in a full-length biography. An independent professional woman, she worked to improve conditions for delinquent girls and for the sick poor, promoted university degrees for women, roused support for the Union during the American Civil War, advocated for victims of marital violence, campaigned for women's suffrage, and engaged in a long-running battle with leading physicians decrying the use of animals in medical experiments. She was centrally located among the circle of London intellectuals who engaged the era's significant debates and was a respected religious and moral thinker as well. Bridging the gap between "high" and "low" journalism, she published in prestigious journals as well as in popular monthly magazines. At long last, Sally Mitchell gives this remarkable woman her due.

The only source of information about Cobbe's life has been her 1894 autobiography -- and even that is considered by many scholars to be less than forthcoming. Over the past several years, Mitchell has unearthed extensive material by or related to Cobbe, dramatically increasing and updating the information now available about this major figure in social and literary history. She has transcribed hundreds of Cobbe's unpublished letters, drawn on archival papers and records for information about Cobbe's family and places where she lived and worked, and supplemented all the newly available material with instructive selections from Cobbe's anonymous journalism as well as other publications. Further, through the cooperation of Cobbe's heirs, Mitchell has been able to use significant materials that remain in private hands, including family letters and account books, a diary Cobbe's father kept during her first thirty-four years, a manuscript account of her 1858 journey to Egypt and Palestine, and a number of Cobbe's sketchbooks and photograph albums.

An accessible narrative biography, Frances Power Cobbe traces the details of Cobbe's life and work, analyzes her writing, and sets both in the context of the social and intellectual debates of her time.

                  Book Description

Wife of self-proclaimed North Pole discoverer Robert Edwin Peary, Josephine Peary was the first white woman to take part in an Artic exploration. Unavailable for nearly a century, this book is her account of Peary's 1891-92 expedition, of her adventurous experiences and cultural encounters, and of her extraordinary treks across the world's upper reaches. This rare, firsthand account--the only Arctic memoir composed by a woman--provides an accurate, elaborate picture of Arctic geography and Inuit culture.

                  1 out of 5 stars Ruined with anti-Peary intro.......2002-06-22

This marvelous Josephine Peary classic of women's exploration is a public domain work that anyone may reprint. This facsimile version has poorly rendered photos and a depressing introduction. Josephine was a fearless pioneer with her own side arm and a Winchester rifle to hunt even 4,000-pound walrus! She tirelessly worked with the Eskimo women learning their language and organizing the sewing of clothing from furs for her husband's expedition. However, this "new" introduction is overly long, overly negative, and reveals an agenda with the events 17 years later when Peary reached the North Pole. Skip the intro! But do enjoy Josephine's story that is intelligent, detailed, and very nicely written.

MY ARCTIC JOURNAL A YEAR AMONG ICE-FIELDS AND ESKIMOS BY JOSEPHINE DIEBITSCH-PEARY WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE GREAT WHITE JOURNEY ACROSS GREENLAND BY ROBERT E. PEARY CIVIL ENGINEER, U S. NAVY THE CONTEMPORARY PUBLISHING COMPANY NEW YORK AND PHILADELPHIA 1893 Copyright, 1893. THE CONTEMPORARY PUBLISHINO COMPANY. TAKING ON AN ESKIMO PILOT. INTRODUCTORY NOTE On Jime 6, iSpi, the steam-whaler Kite which was to bear t ie expedition of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences northward, set sail from the port of New-York, her destination being Whale Sound, on the northwest coast of Green land, where it had been determined to pass the winter, prelimi nary to the long traverse of the inland ice which was to solve the question of tlie extension of Greenland in the direction of the Pole. Ttie members of the expedition numbered but five besides the commander, Mr. Peary, and his wife. They were Dr. F. A. Cook, Messrs. Langdon Gibson, Eivind Astrup, and John T. Verhoeff, and Mr. Pearys faithful colored attendant in his surveying labors in Nicaragua, Matthew Henson. This was the smallest number that had ever been banded together for extended explorations in the high Arctic zone. A year and a quarter after their departure y with the aid of a relief expedi tion conducted by Professor Angelo Heilprin, Mr. Peary s party , lacking one of its members, the unfortunate Mr. Verhoeff, re turned to the American shore. The explorer had traversed northern Greenland from coast to coast, and had added a remarkable chapter to the history of Arctic exploration. The main results of Mr. Peary s journey were The determination of the rapid convergence of the shores of Greenland above the 7 8th parallel of latittide, and consequently the practical demonstration of the insularity of this great land-mass 2 MY ARCTIC JOURNAL The discovery of the existence of ice-free land-masses to the northward of Greenland and The delineation of the northward extension of the great Greenland ice-cap. In the following pages Mrs. Peary recounts her experiences of a full twelvemonth spent on the shores of McCormick Bay, midway between tJie Arctic Circle and the North Pole. The Eskimos with whom she came in contact belong to a little tribe of about three hundred and fifty individuals, completely isolated from the rest of tJte world. They are separated by hundreds of miles from their nearest neighbors, with whom they have no intercourse whatever. TJiese people had never seen a white woman, and some of them had never beheld a civilized being. The opportunities which Mrs. Peary had of observing their manners and mode of life have enabled her to make a valuable contribution to ethnological learning. THE PUBLISHERS. PREFACE This plain and simple narrative of a year spent by a re fined woman in the realm of the dreaded Frost King has been written only after persistent and urgent pressure from friends, by one who shrank from publicity, and who reluc tantly yielded to the idea that her experiences might be of interest to others besides her immediate friends. I have been requested to write a few words of introduc tion and while there may be some to whom it might occur that I was too much interested to perform this task properly, it must nevertheless be admitted that there is probably no one better fitted than myself to do it. Little, indeed, need be said. The feeling that led Mrs. Peary through these experiences was first and foremost a desire to be by my side, coupled with the conviction that she was fitted physically as well as other wise to share with me a portion at least of the fatigues and hardships of the work. I fully concurred in this feeling, and yet, in spite of my oft-expressed view that the dangers of life and work in the Arctic regions have been greatly exaggerated, I cannot but admire her courage...
