His sixteenth-century villas in the Italian Veneto revolutionized the course of architecture, and the principles on which he based his work are still used today. For the past several years, Italian water colorist Giovanni Giaconi has devoted his talents to creating exquisite large-format pen-and-ink watercolor renderings of all thirty-two of Palladio's villas. Each drawing captures the timeless beauty of Palladian architecture and provides a detailed record of these masterpieces. Together with brief descriptions of each villa, samples of Giaconi's preparatory sketches, and Palladio's own woodcuts, these works of art leave a deep impression of Palladio's oeuvre and give the reader an opportunity to compare the original designs with the actual buildings and their present state of conservation. De delivery was best. The price was reasonable, but the cover was missing of this book. This is the only thing that disappointed me.

The best drawings of Palladio's Villas.......2005-03-17

Finally a beautiful book about Palladio's architecture that deals only
with drawings and not photographs. I find this book extremely
interesting and absolutely beautifully produced. The format, the paper
and the quality of the reproductions give the reader a beautiful
chance to enjoy and admire the linear proportions and symmetry of
Palladio's architecture. More interesting is the fact that the author,
Giovanni Giaconi, did not concentrate only on the most famous and
well known villas by Palladio such as the Rotonda, Villa Pisani, Villa
Emo or Villa Foscari, Villa Pojana and Villa Barbaro, to name a few, but
with and obsessive research he measured and draw all the 32 existing
Villas planned by Palladio, also when some of them never came to a
conclusion.
And what's more important is that the Villas are drawn as they now
look.
Some drawings are really interesting like the one of Villa Porto at
Molina, with these ten free standing columns, or even more I wonder
how long it took to draw the very long elevation of Villa Contarini at Piazzola
in the province of Padua.
There are many books with photographs of Palladio's architectures, but this
is the only one with updated measured watercolor drawings and it's really worth a close look at.
Two thumbs up for the talented artist Giovanni Giaconi and to the
interesting and refreshing observations of architect Kim Williams.

The villas of Andrea Palladio have been among the most influential buildings in history. Drawing on the architect's original published legacy of forty-odd designs, George Hersey and Richard Freedman reveal the rigorous geometric rules by which Palladio conceived these structures. Where most earlier attempts to analyze the villas are mere lists of numbers and ratios that ignore space distribution, the present rules produce actual designs. Using a computer, the authors test each rule in every possible application, establishing a degree of validity not possible in ad hoc analyses. Progressing from the architect's most obvious to his subtlest ideas, the computer ultimately creates villa plans and facades that are stylistically indistinguishable from those of Palladio himself.

Possible Palladian Villas opens the way to similar analyses of other such "paradigmatic" designs, whether Chinese screens, Greek temples, baroque churches, or Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Houses. In fact a new approach to architectural history emerges: we can study designs that a given master might have produced but did not. Palladio's actual buildings, along with those of his generations of imitators, are set into the context not only of a new theory but of a new type of theory.

Along with the Macintosh disk that runs the program, Possible Palladian Villas will fascinate the design community and students of architectural style, symmetry, and geometry. It will fill architectural historians with bracing dismay.

George Hersey is Professor of the History of Art at Yale University. Richard Freedman, who designed the computer program, is a product marketer working on MS-DOS at the Microsoft Corporation.

A very intriguing and enjoyable study........2003-07-12

An initial enthusiastic interest in classicism in architecture led to my attending architecture school. This is a book I read during my first term, and I really enjoyed it tremendously. Very instructive as an introduction to the ideas of classical/renaissance architectural theory, as well as fun and "hands-on" with the included software. A previous reviewer seems to feel that the writing unfortunately pretentious. For better or for worse, however, almost all serious art and architectural writing has this kind of quality--or at least appears this way to those who aren't used to seriously thinking about ideas of aesthetics. It shouldn't put one off. The book is substantial, and fun at the same time. I enthusiastically recommend it.

Densely written.......2003-01-22

An attempt to divine the mathematical rules governing room dimensions of Palladio's Renaissance buildings using computer software. One must give the author credit for the large amount of research involved, all documented in its extensive bibliography.

Two Guys, a Big Mouth, and Going too Far...........2007-04-13

I never cared for Don Imus. His views and radio talk were all based on insulting other people, no matter who they were. So this book is as hollow as the man who wrote it. Today, with Don Imus having been fired from radio, after saying one bad thing too many, I can at last say that the whole country have at last seen the man for what he was and said "Enough, Be Gone Now."

A book version of Beauty and the Beasts...........2003-11-05

Having been one of those fat tourists who's enjoyed both Arizona and New Mexico;I was taken by the photos as soon as I opened the book.They are good and brought back many memories.As to the two guys;I'd never heard of them,maybe they've just been out in the sun too long.It's like when the cow kicked over the pail of milk,it sort of spoiled everything.I guess that was why the warehouse was dumping copies of the book for $2.00 .The drawings scattered throughout were good.I would like to make one suggestion,if I may.If the book is ever reprinted;maybe it could be done in Sanskrit ,that way it wouldn't detract so much from the photos.

Great Photography, But..............2001-03-22

As promised, this book has wonderful photography. It really shows off a lot of the beauty we have in this country. However, the language used throughout the book is disgusting. I have not decided whether I will cross out the words with a black marker or discard the book. I certainly would not want a visitor to pick up the book in my home and think I could possibly condone such language. I'm assuming this is the reason the book was offered at such a fantastic price.

Beautiful pictures, infantile text........2000-12-13

Let me start out by saying I am an Imus fan and have been listening to his program since the 70's. That being said this book was a mild disappointment. The beautiful pictures of the American Southwest are definitely worth the price of admission. But the comments often get in the way. How many times does the phrase "fat tourists" need to be said in order to make a point?(At least three in this book along with other derogatory mentions.)The text seems to be an afterthought and probably could have been omitted all together. But the picture on page 12 alone makes the rest of it worthwhile.

In all of his books, Joe James' astute powers of observation enable him to capture the ideosyncracies of the Texas psyche with intelligence and humor, and the illustrations are always priceless. This book is certainly no exception, it ranks as one of my favorites! Texans, golfers, and anyone familiar with both will be delighted; strangers to the Lone Star State will want to catch the next plane down to see for themselves. An absolute joy to read!

James does it again!.......1999-01-19

Don't be fooled into believing that this is just another golf book or another book about Texas. This book says so much more about the human condition than any other cartoon or limerick book I've ever read. James is an astute observer and a masterful artist and this may well be his greatest achievment yet.

Will Rogers: A Photo-Biography.......2002-03-07

I really enjoyed this book-it's very well written, loaded with great pictures, and contains a lot more personal information that was lacking in other books about Will Rogers that I've read. This book contains a fair amount of his quotes, usually given along in sync with the events that happened in his life as they unfolded. This would be an excellent book for someone who has never even heard of Will Rogers, much less read about him-they might get bit with the Will Rogers bug like I have. My husband brought this book home to me from the library, which is why I can rate it without owning it-but I will own it shortly, just as soon as my budget allows. And I plan to buy a copy for my father for a gift, as he was born in December of 1923, just in time to live through the depression and grow up hearing and reading about what this great man had to say the first time he said or wrote it. Highly recommended reading.

Thirty male subjects from two groups (15 Elite who used BR during athletic competition and 15 Athletic habitual runners) performed running trials for each of the following conditions: maximum velocity BR (BRmax), 80% of maximum BR, 60% of maximum BR, maximum velocity forward running and FR (FRmax) at a velocity equal to BRmax. Sagittal view high speed video (200 Hz) and force platform data (1000 Hz) were obtained and the following parameters were evaluated: stride length, stride frequency, intrinsic support length, stance time, trunk angle, hip, knee and ankle ranges of motion, hip, knee and ankle loading rate, resultant active peak, time to resultant active peak, initial anterior-posterior (A-P) peak, and final A-P braking force. Separate repeated measures ANOVAs were conducted to compare a) BR velocity conditions, b) equal efforts for BR and FR, and c) equal velocities for BR and FR.

The central objective of this study was to conduct a survey of the weighted guidelines profit policy and use event analysis to estimate the size of prizes awarded to defense contractors. Analysis of four missile defense systems was conducted to measure the size of prizes awarded for missile contract awards. Findings of the study are limited. However, conclusive findings were not observed for analysis of economic profit within the defense missile industry. This was due to the limited number of contests analyzed in this study.
