Book Description
Theorizing a New Agenda for Architecture: An Anthology of ArchitecturalTheory collects in a single volume the most significant essays on architectural theory of the last thirty years.
A dynamic period of reexamination of the discipline, the postmodern eraproduced widely divergent and radical viewpoints on issues of making, meaning, history, and the city. Among the paradigms presented arearchitectural postmodernism, phenomenology, semiotics, poststructuralism, deconstruction, and feminism.
By gathering these influential articles from a vast array of books and journals into a comprehensive anthology, Kate Nesbitt has created a resource of great value. Indispensable to professors and students of architecture and architectural theory, Theorizing a New Agenda also serves practitioners and the general public, as Nesbitt provides an overview, a thematic structure, and a critical introduction to each essay.
The list of authors in Theorizing a New Agenda reads like a "Who's Who" of contemporary architectural thought: Tadao Ando, Giulio Carlo Argan, Alan Colquhoun, Jacques Derrida, Peter Eisenman, Marco Frascari, Kenneth Frampton, Diane Ghirardo, Vittorio Gregotti, Karsten Harries, Rem Koolhaas, Christian Norberg-Schulz, Aldo Rossi, Colin Rowe, Thomas Schumacher, Ignasi de Sol -Morales Rubi , Bernard Tschumi, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, and Anthony Vidler. A bibliography and notes on all the contributors are also included.
Customer Reviews:
merely passable.......2006-06-18
while nesbitt's introductions to the various sections and articles/excerpts are often quite good, i cannot give this book more than a "passable" rating. the selections are heavily weighted toward a the ideas of a select few authors/theoreticians, creating a fairly lopsided look at recent architectural theory (as can fairly easily be seen in a review of the table of contents). in addition, those familiar with the topic sections covered (for example, semiotics and its relation to architecture), will find the excerpts chosen to represent certain theoretician's bodies of work rather inappropriate and incomplete. i have not yet had the opportunity to read any similar anthologies of very recent architectural theory, but this is certainly not one which should impress, or one that should be used as a stand-alone source.
Post Modernist psyco-bable.......2005-05-14
As an arcaheology student studying vernacular architecture, I found this particular text to be a waste of time. It does nothing for the history of architecture, nor does it lend itself to coherent reading.
Excellent Architectural Theory text.......2004-11-21
Architectural Theory from 1965-1995 is complex, nuanced, and somewhat pretentious. Part of the problem is that contemporary Architectural Theory (and I would call this "Postmodern" theory) is connected to Continental Philosophy, which is also quite pretentious and often inaccessible to the vast majority of readers. Quite frankly, a lot of postmodern theory is, in my opinion, meaningless, but very hip, drivel.
That being said, if one is able to separate out the drivel, there is also a great deal to gain from reading postmodern theory. They key is to learn how to separate the good from the bad. This book won't teach you that, so you may often wonder, after reading a text, whether you just don't get it, or if there is really anything to get at all. All of the authors whose essays are contained in this text are very important in contemporary architecture, and any student or enthusiast of contemporary architectural trends needs to understand these figures, such as Koolhaas, Eisenman, and Tschumi (also, all major figures at architecture schools in the US). I would say every one of the authors here has some good points, although some of them write in far more verbose and pretentious language than others. But, this book is simply presenting the important figures in architectural theory, so I won't fault the book for the flaws of the texts contained within. It would be irresponsible NOT to include all of these texts. Judge them for yourself, and remember that each of theorists in these pages has critisized the work of other theorists in the textbook. They aren't all equal, and nobody has claimed they are.
The only problem with this book is that it doesn't contain any illustrations. Now I know this isn't meant to be a coffee-table book with pretty buildings, but it's very problematic to have architecture texts without illustrations. I highly recommened looking up some of the work of each of the architects in here. For example, if you don't understand what Eisenman is talking about, take a look at some pictures of his buildings and it may become clear. Also, remember that most of the texts in this book, when first published, DID contain pictures accompanying them, so something is lost in their removal. Some of the texts need pictures more than others. I think Rem Koolhaas, more than most of the rest, relies quite heavily on images to get his point across in his fantastic books (especially S,M,L,XL and Delirious New York), and republishing his work without these images takes a good deal of the meaning away, and also makes the texts much more dry.
I recommend this book, but probably just as a reference or a jumping-off point from which to explore certain trends and theorists further. The organization of this book is quite nice, outlining each theoretical trend (such as deconstructivism, phenomenology, or critical regionalism), and making clear the overlap (many theorists have essays in several sections). Again, this book is probably not for the casual architecture fan, and reading it is not as fun as opening up a Koolhaas book or other beautifully-made visual book, but if you really want (or need) to understand the most important trends and theorists in contemporary architecture, this book is a great buy.
Correcting Ignorance.......2004-01-14
I am an architecture student at Washington University. This book is a great stepping stone into Architectural Theory. But, why I am really writing this review is to correct the unread
individual who wrote a review of this book prior to me.
phe·nom·e·nol·o·gy - noun
1. A philosophy or method of inquiry based on the premise that reality consists of objects and events as they are perceived or understood in human consciousness and not of anything independent of human consciousness.
2. A movement based on this, originated about 1905 by Edmund Husserl.
An excellent place to start.......2003-02-20
I have always been interested in architectural theory, but never knew where to start. The number of theory books is simply daunting. The key, I have discovered, is to find a book of texts edited by a clear, intelligent editor who can help ease you into the topics. That is exactly what we have here.
Because it's an anthology, there is nothing new here. What IS here is a good selection of readings from the major figures of the last 40 years, sorted by topic. Each reading is accompanied by a short introduction by the editor, explaining the context in which the article first appeared, and some background information on the author. There is also a very thorough (and highly recommended) introduction by the editor which gives background information on each of the topics covered. By the end of the book, you will, at the very least, be familiar with the philosophical underpinnings of architecture from Postmodernism on.
Granted, there's no guarantee that you'll understand what the authors are talking about. Even after reading the chapter on Deconstructionism twice, Derrida remains a complete enigma to me. On the other hand, I really enjoyed Vidler, Rowe and Frampton. As a result of reading this book, I was able to pursue further the authors and topics which most interested me (and, more importantly, skip the ones that didn't). This seems to me to be the mark of a good anthology.

Painting Glowing Colors in Watercolor.......2007-07-23
Beautiful book. Detailed help in learning to underpaint - showing all colours used. Great exercises to copy to learn the technique. Inspiring.
PENNY SOTO.......2007-01-09
An absolutely beautifully illustrated and written book. Did I learn anything? Well, yes, I did learn quite a bit on color and setting up my pallette. But to actually paint...not yet as I am a beginner. I think this is a great book to hold onto when one becomes more advanced especially in learning how to use the fabulous colors Penny uses to get the great effects in her paintings. I highly recommend it.
Not for a beginner but still good instruction.......2005-03-12
Although this book is a little too far advanced for the beginning watercolorist, it is full of good instruction for the beginner. Penny uses a lot of different colors. I suggest the beginner study Penny's palette and choose only 1-2 colors in each range. Later more colors can be added. Overall the book is good instruction.
Too many colors for the palette.......2004-12-04
Although I loved the paintings and the transparency, even I who have been painting watercolors for more than 10 years found the number of paints used are too many and, in trying to do them, found the demonstrations too complicated. I remember an instructor saying that 3 colors to mix was enough. I wouldn't recommend the book to a beginner.
Painting Glowing Colors in Watercolor.......2003-05-04
I received this book for my birthday. It is one of the best watercolor instruction books I have. She gives very good instructions on how to paint with glowing colors. She has several other instructions and suggestions on composition, drawing etc. This book was carefully thought out and the illustrations are wonderful.

Tips and Tactics from Gladstone, THE corporate pro.......2004-10-05
Having worked with Gary on many annual reports (some of our photos he shot are in this book), I can honestly say that it was a pleasure to work with such a consumate professional such as Gary and his assistant, Matt Proulx. We spent countless hours, days and weeks on location capturing some of the greatest shots our firm has ever produced for our clients. This book was being written as we were shooting several reports (see page 152 for a great example of what a photographer is usually given to work "magic" with) and what he says is absolute gospel when it comes to the photo road warrior. Much of the time spent is hurry up and wait and then race like mad to get the shot because of circumstances out of the control of the photographer. Gary's best advice inside this book tells the seasoned pro or aspiring one how to save time, money and sanity while trying to get the best possible shot. Practical, straightforward, and always grumpy, Gary Gladstone will make you a better photographer if you listen to what he is telling you. Buy this book if you desire to be the best corporate photographer you can be.
Great Book about being a PROFESSIONAL.......2003-01-19
Gary Gladstone has taken the art of being a good photographer and crafted a book on how to be a successful professional photographer. Its not enought to take good photos, and this book shows you what else you need if you are thinking about making money, and not just spending it, in pictures.
This is the Stuff They Don't Teach In Schools!.......2002-02-04
This is just a wonderful book for anybody building a business as a freelance photographer. Gary tells you the inside stuff that many pros even keep from their assistants. The book loaded with real world examples of how problems get solved and how to steer your job planning to keep from getting in trouble later. If you're going to shoot outside your studio, then this book should put your mind at ease with strategies. He walks you through real problems with examples of how to avoid or get out of jams.
Gladstone teaches how to think your way through a job. The chapter on assistants is a much read if you're thinking of starting that way.
The visuals are great! Makes you want to run out and start shooting. I just love this book. Thanks Gary.

WATCH OUT!!!!.......2001-11-28
I'm a begginer in this field, there is no doubt this is a good book. But, if you are a begginer too, don't buy this one, because it has just 30 pages for "TRICKS & HINTS" out of 160. There are a lot of photographs, but it is a shame there is no explanation on what lences, nor films, nor speed shutter, etc. he is using.
He only talks about "HOW TO DO BUSSINESS", it is good, and about dealing with people (your assistant, your clients), this is usefull too.
By the other hand, I don't think it is more usefull how to packing your equipement than how to take a good photograph.
So, the title of the book has got nothing to do with the content. WATCH OUT!!!
This book is simply the best of its kind........2001-11-23
It gives you hard won experience from a photographer at the top of his field. From what (and how) to pack for a travelling assignment, to making sure you get paid on time.
But not only that, Gary Galadstone gives you the benefit of his creative mind too. How to creatively shoot your way out of tricky situations. Turning potentially hopeless locations into great photographs.
I got the impression that Gary was trying to include as much as possible in this book. He could have left loads out and it would still have been a good book.
Just buy it, you wont be sorry. I'm sure I'm not the only person to have wished he had read it at the beginning of his career.
I found this book so generous with tips, codes of practise and his experience I felt I had to personally thank the author, and THAT doesn't often happen!

Book Description
It's hard to believe you're dying when you feel fit and fine...but millions of Americans are harboring unaware a condition that can rob them or kill them outright--hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, the most common form of heart disease. Even when hypertension is diagnosed, treatment is usually based on drugs, most with dismal side effects, expensive, and of limited usefulness.
Really effective treatment of hypertension calls for getting at the cause--which, Dr. Eric Braverman has found, often relates to poor diet, elevated cholesterol, excess weight, stress, and biochemical imbalances. With Dr. Braverman's 30- to 90-day program, patients have lowered their blood pressure and, in some case, even reversed the course of existing heart disease.
Based on extensive research and long clinical experience, Dr. Braverman's program can open the way to the longer and better-enjoyed life that high blood pressure and heart disease are silently waiting to steal from us.

Why Drugs are Not the Answer to Heart Disease.......2005-04-14
What a wonderful idea Dr. Braverman promises - "REVERSE HEART DISEASE, Naturally" with his "30- to 90-Day No-More hypertension and Heart Disease Program" in 198 pages. Who is Eric Braverman? As founder and Director of PATH Medical (the Place for achieving Total Health) in New York City he's "considered one of America's most innovative physicians" according to his publisher Basic Health.
Updating his 1996 research by adding daughter Dasha Braverman's RAINBOW DIET (choosing the right fresh colorful fruits and vegetables) the results to be expected are a "Drug-free, robust life" in one year.
So you ask - How can you do it? Well, Braverman says you can:
Lower blood pressure to 120/80 - 135/85.
Triglycerides and cholesterol to below 200 and increase HDL to above 50.
Discontinue all beta-and alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors.
Just replace with his Special Formula's number 1 to 14.
Then, Reduce Stress with Cranial Electric Stimulation (CES) by sending gentle electrical signals to the vagus nerve in your brain with his RELAX-MATE, a TENS - a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation unit, for 15-60 minutes a day to release GABA and acetylcholine in your brain because it's biofeedback like training for self control and peace of mind.
All that can help you to "break addictive food habits and destructive behaviors". Dr. Braverman defines depression "as anger turned inward" and suggests emotions "contribute to blockages in the large vessels supplying blood to the brain." New science that`s easy to follow and easy to use.
With this book anyone ought to be able to "Reverse Heart Disease -Naturally!"

Book Description
Officials from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control have reported that the overuse of antibiotics in medicine has created an epidemic of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Doctors fear that if antibiotic use is not curtailed, we may soon approach the day when untreatable infections are rampant. In Beyond Antibiotics, Drs. Schmidt, Smith, and Sehnert explore the problems presented by the overuse of these drugs. More importantly, they show how to build immunity, improve resistance to infections, and avoid antibiotics when possible.
Customer Reviews:
Unsubstantiated Hooey.......2000-10-24
Hoping to find some real alternatives to antibiotics, I was sorely disappointed. This book is just the same old "naturalist" magical thinking. Filled with wild, unsubstantiated claims both against antibiotics (and doctors in general) and for a "natural" lifestyle, the authors put forth the same tired thesis: Eat only vegetables, move out of the city, and consume vitamin C in doses equivalent to 2000 oranges a day and you'll never get sick." They do offer some natural aid to alleviate symptoms when the magic inevitably fails, but no real remedies to help your body kill bacteria. Their theory appears to be that bacteria are a figmet of the modern hypochondriac's imagination.
If you're sick, go to the doctor. Don't waste your money on this book.
EXCELLENT!!!.......1999-06-14
I work in the Health and Fitness field.I am also an athlete who exercises, eats perfectly and takes appropriate vitamins.....but for as long as I can remember I always had some sort of cold or cough at least once a month and guaranteed illness after serious athletic competition. The Doctors felt it was because of my work and my exposure to 100`s of people a day, and in a way they were right. The true problem was the stregnth of my immune system. Now 6 months since I read the book,I havent been sick a single day!The chapter on Vitamin C had the strongest effect on my current state of "Wellness". My thanks to the Authors ! Outstanding !
Great Book.......1998-03-29
Book had a lot of useful information and was easy to read. I highly recomend it!

The Doctor is IN..........2000-08-31
Lucy, famous for her love for Schroeder and crabbiness, has also become known for sitting behind her booth feeding outlandish views on life to her unsuspecting patients, namely Charlie Brown.
The entire cast of the Peanuts Gang seems to have wonderfully advanced philosophies for children under the age of eight. Sally's riddles of broken English, Linus' capacity for rational intellectual thought, yet his gulibility to belive his sister's "Little Known Facts" of life speeches astonishes me. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys humor. As an avid Peanuts fan, and playing LUCY in a community theatre preformance of YOUR A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN! Charles M. Schulz has always interested me.
Book Description
In this frank and informative autobiography, the veteran investigative journalist Ida M. Tarbell looks back on her nearly fifty-year career. At the age of eighty-two, one of the original muckrakers writes with her characteristic candor about a life spent defying categories and challenging complacency.
Tarbell was the only woman in her class of forty students at Allegheny College, and upon graduation she began an internship at The Chautauquan, which was the start of a lifelong immersion in the world of journalism. She further honed her skills during a three-year stint in Paris, but the breakthrough came in 1894 when she was hired as a full-time writer for McClure's magazine.
It was at McClure's--where, again, she was the only woman on staff--that Tarbell made her name as a determined journalist, one of the fearless brigade of truth-seekers famously chastised by Theodore Roosevelt, who coined the term 'muckraker' in order to discredit those who attacked senators in print. Tarbell wrote serialized biographies of Napoleon and Abraham Lincoln, as well as a landmark series of articles on Standard Oil and John D. Rockefeller.
In All in the Day's Work, Tarbell turns her keen eye on herself, recalling the events of her fascinating life with the same honesty, verve, and scrupulous accuracy she brought to her journalistic work, offering insight along the way into the people, places, and issues of her time.

Connecting to the Adirondacks-home.......2006-11-05
I found this book to be very fascinating. Having grown up in the area and still having family in the area is what drew me to this particular book. I remember my father telling me about some of the people, as well as my mother-in-law who also resides in the area. I also have a daughter in medical school so I will pass this on to her so she can round out her understanding of all areas of medicine and people. The beautiful photographs added to this book. Anyone interested in the Adirondacks or in the medical field would find this book a must have for their collection.
An Outstanding Book!.......2004-12-22
As an allied health care provider (EMS) I cannot praise this book enough. Daniel Way is a truely remarkable Physician in an age where medicine as an art and calling has become a business and patients are easially lost in the system as only a diagnosis or case number. As someone who sees the depersonification of the medical practice every day and the endless referals, Dr. Way genuinely cares for his patients. Some of his vignettes are humorous, some are inspiring, and some display the raw cruelty of life and death. Dr. Way has a special gift in his writing that makes you feel as if you actually know the patient at the end of the biography. While reading this book I could almost sense the sights, emotion, and even the smell of where he was. As someone who has hiked, paddled, and biked all over the Adirondacks of New York State, this book's setting was all the more relative to me. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone that chooses to become a healthcare provider as it is a constant reminder as to what and who we chose our professions for. The medical community needs more people like Dr. Way.
An emotionally moving portrait of land.......2004-10-12
All In A Day's Work: Scenes And Stories from an Adriondack Medical Practice presents the ruminations of an experienced medical doctor whose home visits amid the Adriondacks allowed him to take in the beautiful scenery, capture photographs, and bring help to people who needed it, especially in a part of the nation with a high population of senior citizens. Full-color photographs illustrate every page, and the down-to-earth narrative text describes not only the beauty and majesty of the scenery, but also vignettes from the lives of patients, some stories uplifting, some heartbreaking. An emotionally moving portrait of land and the people who call it home.
Artistic genious + heartfelt storytelling = this book!!!.......2004-07-27
You can tell by reading this book that the author is certainly no ordinary family doctor. The author, who happens to be my dad, shows without a doubt that he truly cares about his patients, and can find an intersting story behind any face that walks in for a checkup. From a World War II hero pushed to the brink of death countless times to a simple man spending his entire life in a rural convenience store, Dan Way's patient stories will make you laugh, gasp, and maybe tear up a little. Way compliments each story with beautiful pictures from a beautiful region that I've spent much of my life in: the Adirondack Mountains. This is definitely worth reading for anybody, particularly those interested in photography or those in the medical profession. Great job Dad!!!!
