The book "A Little House of My Own" is the same book, but in color and better designed. And cheaper. Just sayin'.

5 out of 5 stars A great little book.......2004-12-21

This book has whetted my apetite for building small, tiny homes for years. I highly recommend it.

A great idea is simply to make one of these places in the backyard someplace to keep warm while getting away from it all.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny Houses, Big Ideas.......2000-10-03

I've owned Walker's book since I picked it up on a sale table eight or nine years ago. It's probably given me more enjoyable fantasy hours than any other book I own. I hope to build my own office/studio in the woods behind my house, and this book has fueled my dreams. I may never get around to building any of these structures, but I've been rewarded many times over by the inspiration of "Tiny, Tiny Houses."

Forty small, simple and wonderful homes presented in photos, plans and detail drawings by an architect who is an authority on American vernacular design.

1 out of 5 stars Coverage dated.......1999-10-28

Who would think 1987 would look so dated? A few of the "dwellings" are amusing but the hippy look and scrap construction makes me think most photos were from the 60's.

      Book Description

Sumi-e is the classic painting style of Japan, and its graceful simplicity is admired around the world. A natural follow-up to the best-selling The Sumi-e Book, The Sumi-e Dream Book demonstrates how to take the classic brushstrokes of sumi-e to a new level of painting, where creativity is inspired by deeply felt memories and spiritual expression. First, sumi-e artist Yolanda Mayhall provides a brief history and explains the philosophy behind this classic Japanese painting style. She highlights its many masters, one of them her ancient mentor the master brush painter, woodblock, and dream journey artist Hokosai. Next, she reviews the classic materials and the basic brushstrokes of sumi-e known as the Four Gentlemen: Bamboo, Wild Orchid, Chrysanthemum, and Plum Branch, along with their variations. Finally, Mayhall puts it all together to demonstrate the sumi-e art of dream journey painting. Readers will learn a variety of creative and exciting techniques for using color to add a delightful dimension to the sumi-e image as well as discover exciting techniques for visually capturing important life memories and spiritual reflections in a painting.

Its ok but I thought it was going to be more step by step and its not. Good book thow.

      3 out of 5 stars A Bit Shallow.......2006-11-11

Very nice pictures and some good description on Sumi-e dreamjourney painting. However, as an artist looking for more detailed explanations on techniques, I was quite disappointed. If I was just interested in general ideas on this type of painting the book would be great, but as an artist I was disappointed in the way the material was presented. For example, loading the brush was glossed over.

3 out of 5 stars Good paintings, but not sumi-e.......2005-01-19

This book might be interesting as some artistic approach to make paintings. the paintings are not bad. But they are not sumi-e. They are rather aquarelle, that mimics eastern paintings.
IMHO the key thing, that makes Yolanda paintings look different is her technique of brushstokes, which are very typical to the western aquarelle school. The original sumi-e brushstrokes are based on brushstokes of chinese (well, and japanese as well) calligraphy, and this is one of the characteristics that variate paintings of differnt masters.

Still, the book text is a good transcription of sumi-e/brush painting concept. Just for the painting examples I'd suggest to look at the works of the "original" artists.

4 out of 5 stars A real "dream" for those interested in Sumi-e Painting.......2004-04-09

Being an afficionado of Chinese Brush painting, I was intrigued when I first saw this book. I'm not easily impressed by art books, and I've reviewed hundreds over the years, but this is one of those books that actually surprised me. It really is a dream for artists intersted in the brush painting of China and Japan. Here's why...

Mayhall's style is both beautiful and spontaneous, and the imagery in this book is breathtaking. What is really refreshing about this book, however, is that it isn't just another *how to* brush technique book. While she does go into great detail on history, materials, technique, and subject matter, the artist puts you into the mindset of a Sumi-e artist. Rather than simply show her readers "how" to paint, Mayhall encourages them to begin their own journey into Sumi-e "dream" painting, and equips them with the knowledge necessary to find their own artistic voice. She states, "it is not only the subject that gives life to art, it is the spirit that is within the artist's genius." Well said!

Material covered in this text includes:
      * Chapter 1 - A Brief History of Sumi-e
      * Chapter 2 - Studying the Dream Journey Painters of China and Japan
      * Chapter 3 - Starting on Your Own Dream Journey (tools, brush strokes)
      * Chapter 4 - Practicing the Four Gentlemen (bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, plum branch)
      * Chapter 5 - Beginning the Creative Process (incorporating the four gentlemen)
      * Chapter 6 - Learning Advanced Brush Strokes for Birds & Flowers (Yo birds, iris, hummingbirds & its flowers)
      * Chapter 7 - Internalizing the Three Essential Elements of Sumi-e (creativity, composition, color)
      * Chapter 8 - Planning the Journey (sketching, structure, Exploring new techniques, beginning your dream journey)
      * Chapter 9 - Dreaming (more ideas & demonstrations)
      * Chapter 10 - Enhancing Your Dream Paintings (calligraphy)

If you're interested in the brush painting style of China and Japan, or would like to incorporate these techniques into your watercolor and/or ink painting, I recommend this book along with "Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolors" by Lian Quan Zhen... two excellent books to inspire you and bring your own artistic dreams to life.

5 out of 5 stars Friend and admirer.......2003-07-17

As a long time friend and collector of Yolanda's beautiful paintings, I was overjoyed to see her latest book. I have found it to be not only well organized and illustrated but written in a style that is easily understood and followed. The inclusion of historical and contemporary works accompanied by poetic translations elevates the instructional format to a book to be cherished for its contribution to understanding the mysterious and ancient culture of Japan.

5 out of 5 stars A fine overview of the subject, beautifully illustrated.......2006-10-25

Ron Ransom has written a popular series of books for student painters, featuring his own techniques and illustrated with his own paintings. This book is something different. It is a tribute to his favorite watercolorists, illustrated with excellent reproductions and with a text that is respectful and full of usefull insights.

The term "impressionist" is used here in the sense of painters who work directly from their observation of nature. (This is not a book about the French Impressionist school of painting, although many of them were gifted watercolorists). Some of the painters are contemporary artists who are still working, and others are from the past. They all express a love of nature through their work, although they vary quite a bit in their individual styles.

Although it's not strictly a how-to manual, student painters can learn a lot from the book. BUt you don't need to be a painter to enjoy it. If you love watercolor paintings, and are curious about the thought processes and methods used by topnotch painters in this medium, you will enjoy this lovely book.

      5 out of 5 stars a delightful book.......2006-04-04

a useful survey of various prominent watercolorists, the book provides fundamental information about each artist, leading to the conclusion that however techniques may vary, the basic ingredient to produce great art is hard work and dedication.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring glimpse of some wonderful painters..........1999-06-07

The paintings of Edward Seago, Edward Wesson, Douglas Treasure, John Yardley and others more well known to Americans, such as Frank Webb and Claude Croney, are featured in this book. Ron briefly touches on each artist as a person and what inspired or inspires them to paint, and illustrates it all with a representative selection of their works. A very informative book and a good one to have for reference in one's art collection, as there aren't many watercolor impressionist books around.

      Book Description

Monet, Van Gogh, Sargent . . . the master impressionists hold an esteemed place in art history, and their output has influenced every generation of artists to follow. Now, artists seeking to capture the radiance and subtlety of impressionism in watercolor can learn the techniques of the masters for themselves. Divided into four parts, Painting the Impressionist Watercolor offers a complete overview to the essentials of impressionism, its colorful evolution, and varied techniques. Part 1 introduces readers to the history of the art form, and explains how its methods apply to watercolor. Part 2 details necessary materials and prepares readers for painting. Part 3 presents step-by-step lessons on how to render a wide range of light effects in still life through simple block exercises (which allow beginners to learn about color and light without the distractions of a complex subject). Part 4 takes readers beyond the basics and into more complex arenas such as textures and lighting conditions.

1 out of 5 stars Neither useful nor interesting..............2007-09-16

I found this book dull and boring; neither useful nor interesting. Many words, saying little..... There are hundreds of books on watercolor that are far better.

      4 out of 5 stars interesting.......2007-01-10

Very interesting but not for beginers.
There's only one quote on the book that i found it is very "absolut" and didn't like it: "Limited palletes is for limited minds". I guess the writer did not consider very well this. Very very great and important impressionist painters have used a limited pallete too....

3 out of 5 stars great advice for still life artists.......2006-08-03

"Painting the Impressionist Watercolor" is a nicely written book, but not what I expected or wanted. The focus of this book is still life -- painting from a set of real life items that are right there in front of you. The approach taken is impressionism -- getting the feeling for the object, instead of a completely faithful rendering. Particular interest is paid to shadows and reflected color in shadows. The book includes several generally worded exercises, and more specific exercises with step-by-step instruction.

I like and appreciate the impressionist approach, but am not interested in still life. The advice in this book is very much tailored to still life, and much of it does not appear to be generally applicable. Although the author presumes the reader has already had a basic introduction to watercolor technique, this book can be appreciated by beginners as well as intermediate artists.

If you enjoy painting still life, add 1-star to my rating; and if you like step-by-step examples, add another star.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Me to Continue with Watercolor.......2006-04-14

I was at the point of giving up watercolor - it was too fussy, I didn't have time for the perfect conditions or studio with kids, and I frankly didn't get the necessity of doing layer upon layer of washes. I saw this book in the library, checked it out, and could not put it down. It absolutely transformed the way I paint. Needless to say, I bought the book, have done every exercise in it, and it has made me a much better painter.

My primary medium is art quilts, and I was able to apply the lesson I learned from Lee's book to my quilts as well, and I have been winning awards with them ever since. It really made me see colors differently, and that is reflected in my art.

Boynton is not a traditional watercolorist - he isn't concerned with transparency, but with color. This book is about COLOR, COLOR, COLOR! In fact, Boynton tells his students to SCREAM at him with color. When I read that, I said sign me up.

His method is wet-in-wet and takes several attempts to get the hang of it, but don't quit. The results are well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Watercolor Book.......2005-02-23

This is a wonderful book that is sure to become a classic. When I select an art book there are generally two things I am looking for. First can the author paint and second can the author teach. Lee Boynton does both exceptionally well. His paintings are beautiful and truly impressionistic. When I look at his paintings great watercolorists like Sargent and Homer come to mind. Regarding the teaching ability of the author he with the assistance of one of his former students (Gottlieb) do an exceptional job of communicating his approach to painting. This book will teach you how to look at your painting subjects with the eyes of impressionist. He primarily does this through two demonstrations exercises one painting blocks and the second painting a still life. At the end of each chapter there are additional exercises that help to reinforce what you have learned. In addition to the demonstrations there are many other chapters covering various other important topics.

Please note that I agree that this is not a good book for someone just starting out in watercolor. He doesn't teach you how to lay a wash for example. For this I would recommend "The Watercolor Book" by Dewey or something similar. That being said I do not think you need to be an advanced painter to learn from this book. I have only been painting in watercolor for about nine months and benefited greatly from this book.

In closing, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in painting impressionistic watercolors. If you would like to view Boynton's work you might want to check out his web site at www.leeboynton.com

                        3 out of 5 stars A writing life.......2002-11-18

The life and times of nationally-known columnist Juliet V. Strauss is examined in this biography of the Rockville, Indiana, native, the first in Guild Press of Indiana's "Indiana Women Who Made a Difference" series.

Written by Ray Boomhower, managing editor of the Indiana Historical Society's illustrated history magazine Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History, the book examines Strauss's work on her hometown Rockville Tribune newspaper and the steady stream of common-sense, down-to-earth observations on life she produced for Indiana readers of her weekly "Country Contributor" column in the Indianapolis News and, from 1905 until her death in 1918, for the approximately one million Ladies' Home Journal subscribers through her column "The Ideas of a Plain Country Woman." In addition to her writing career, Strauss played a key role in helping save the Turkey Run area from destruction in 1916 by timber interests.

Edward Bok, longtime Journal editor, said that Strauss's contributions were "more widely read and . . . are more popular than the writings of any single contributor to the magazine." Strauss's writing found -- in addition to its frequent hardships and struggles -- joy, beauty, and art in a homemaker's daily life. Her efforts at glorifying homemaking struck a chord with her female readers across the country who grew, through long association, to consider the Rockville housewife "as friend and counselor," the Indianapolis News commented upon Strauss's death on 22 May 1918. She offered through her essays, the newspaper noted, a sound philosophy: "a love of simplicity and genuineness, an earnest and honest faith, a hatred of sham and pretense, and a belief in the home and family as the great educators."

During her career Strauss came to be considered as one of the most widely read female writers in America. Indiana historian Jacob Piatt Dunn, Jr., who noted that Strauss's writing possessed the Hoosier characteristic of "optimism and wholesomeness," claimed that the Rockville writer was "more widely read than any American essayist has ever been." In the history of the world, Dunn went on to say of Strauss, "nobody ever wrote so much about the common things of everyday life, and held their readers."

The biography, the first ever on the Hoosier writer, also examines Strauss's friendship with such leading figures in Indiana's history as John Clark Ridpath, educator and a best-selling popular historian; George S. Cottman, an Indianapolis printer, author, and Indiana Magazine of History founder; and the "Hoosier Poet" himself, James Whitcomb Riley. Riley established a lively correspondence with Strauss that featured praise for her writing and concerns for her health.

Born on Jan. 7, 1863 in Rockville, Strauss was the second of three daughters raised by William and Susan (King) Humphreys. As a young girl, she received the nickname "Gyp," because of her constant wanderings in Parke County's lush forests. A self-described "dilatory pupil," Strauss did excel in one area: writing. John Beadle, Rockville Tribune owner and editor, invited her to contribute to the newspaper. Later, Strauss's husband, Isaac Strouse, bought the Tribune and Strauss started her weekly column, "Squibs and Sayings." In 1903 she began her regular "The Country Contributor" columns in the Indianapolis News and, two years later, Strauss started her "The Ideas of a Plain Country Woman" column in the Ladies' Home Journal. She died on May 22, 1918.
