Book Description

A vividly illustrated and richly detailed manual for crafting decorative trompe l'oeil motifs and murals.

From the co-author of the popular Handbook of Painted Decoration comes an advanced exploration of expert trompe l'oeil art and technique. Following the designs and step-by-step illustrations of an award-winning French decorative painter, interior designers and decorators will learn how to refine their skills as well as build new techniques to expand their repertoire. The book provides numerous designs that can be duplicated, as well as inspiration for designers to fashion their own creations.

Covering a wide range of subject matter, from monumental landscapes to ornamental friezes, Yannick Guégan demonstrates the execution of elegant wood, marble, natural, and figurative motifs for decorative panels and panoramic murals. He integrates fine French methods and traditions-such as the incorporation of classical capitals and temples-with contemporary style and innovation, depicting each step from first sketch to finished product in full color. This is an excellent instruction manual as well as reference tool for anyone working in interior design and decoration. 300 color illustrations, 8 gatefolds.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars pretentious.......2006-11-10

This book looks big and impressive on the outside, but inside, it is of very little use to the average commercial mural artist. I was very disappointed, especially considering the hefty price tag. Would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-07-03

This book is very helpful if you are truly wishing to uncover secrets of what I would consider one of the masters of trompe l'oeil illusion.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing artist shares his works........2005-12-23

This book is full of stunning photos of murals, renderings, and panels of the artists' portfolio. There is little text but with some imagination it is great reference material.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2005-12-06

While this book is filled with glossy pictures of one studio's projects, they are of a particular style and not necessarily useful to a professional painter. Mr Guegan's other book is far more useful for both instruction and reference material.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Picture Book.......2003-05-30

This book is absolutely gorgeous and will provide lots of inspiration.

What it won't provide is lots of words or step by step instructions. There are many close up shots of the very large murals which are helpful for discerning the details, but still not enough to be able to recreate it yourself, unless, as the book suggests, you've read his other book: Handbook of Painted Decoration.

Beautiful book, but if you're looking for instruction, this isn't the one.

    5 out of 5 stars Great 40k Art.......2007-09-19

If you're a Warhammer 40k fan this book is a must. This book includes great 40k art in rich deep color with several two page layout pictures. This is the highest quality Black Library book I've seen and for $30 it's a steal. The art is mainly of Space Marines but there are sections for Orks, Imperium, Tyrinaids, Eldar ect. The art covers from the very first Rouge Trader publication to the recent Codex's and many great Black Library novel covers. They labeled each piece of art with the creators name and where it came from.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! - The Blacklibrary jsut stepped it up a notch.......2007-05-17

Owning a lot of the Black Library's art books already (pretty much everything except the horus heresy collection), I think that makes my opinion here somewhat valid. Being a writer too (don't expect too much proof reading here though), that makes me appreciate the work that has been done here.

This is without doubt the best collection that the Black Library has put out. The quality is astonishing. The paper quality, excellent. Exceptionaly well bound, and just an altogether great collection. This book makes the ownership of adrian smith's art book (though this is still worth grabbing - brilliantly done), the dave gallagher art book, the inquisitor sketchbook, and inquis exterminatus a waste. I say this because much of it is duplicated and in better quality in this book.

That said, there are plenty of new pieces in this. For the price, I don't think you will be able to do better. I own many art books, and this is the best put together by far. I imagine that the Warhammer book coming in June might trump this (as it should ahve more diversity with the array of fantasy species covered (skaven, skinks, etc.), but for 40k, this is excellent.

I should mention that I also own some anime art books (trigun, kingdom hearts, etc) as well as some games art-books (monster hunter mainly) and this blows them out of the water. I'm still looking for some art from confrontation, but this book really is impressive. Until I find something better for value and presentation, which I don't think will be soon, I think I will remain more than satisfied with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of artwork........2006-12-29

For the price, this book is incredible. The book is bound very well, and is hard cover. Each page is glossy and the print is fantastic. From a design and quality standpoint, this book is as good as it can get. 40k art fanatics will not be disappointed. This is top quality, and I hope the Black Library never cuts any corners for future products like this.

From a content standpoint, I would have liked more detailed descriptions on some of the artwork presented. Most have short one line quotes from the artist, or the other artists critiquing each other. Which isn't bad, but for the most part they all say the exact same thing over and over "SoandSo's art is dark and gritty, he inspires us all!". Other than that, the selection of artwork is a good mixture of drawings, sketches, and paintings. They split the book into sections dealing with various armies and groups, which is pretty nice. And there is a LOT of content. A nice thick book.

And there is also a lot of missing artwork still out there, which probably means they could put together a second, and possibly third art book.

Needless to say, no matter what the cost, if the quality is as good as this one was, I'll be first in line to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Compendium of WH40K Art.......2006-08-26

This collection provides an eclectic sampling from artists working within the WH40K universe. Most of the art has been used on other WH40K products such as novels, graphic novels, comic books, rule books, codexes, model boxes, game boxes, etc. That said, this is no retread of that art by any means. The pictures are much larger and clearer, some pieces spanning a page or two, and the artists provide some insight into their particular styles and influences. I found it interesting how some artists approach their work for the WH40K universe. The bulk of the art is fantastic, with jaw-dropping details.

I have two tiny complaints, however. One, there are some pieces that could have used a better treatment, particularly those by John Blanche. I find his drawings okay, but often times it's very hard to see any significant detail in a particular piece because it's composed of scratches and scribbles. My only other complaint deals with the focus of the book. Maybe half of the book covers art used for Space Marines and Imperial Guard. Some races and subjects only get cursory treatment, and I would have liked to see more art about those races and subjects. The potential exists for extravagant pieces from the outer reaches of the WH40K universe.

All in all, it's worth the price. For WH40K players, it will provide inspiration. For others, it's a great collection of finely detailed art. Here's hoping for a volume two to be in the works or available soon.

    4 out of 5 stars Smashing artwork.......2006-07-27

The hardcover arrived in emaculate condition. Content wise, I really liked the coverage on space marines, especially Horus Heresy pics & posters. Overall, there's too little coverage on eldar and other races. Perhaps the publisher should have another "Chaos" edition, dedicated to Khorne, Slaneesh, Nurgle etc.

    4 out of 5 stars 40K History.......2006-11-10

The book is excellent giving a more indepth look at the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Gives a broader picture than individual books in the 40K series.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference material.......2006-06-25

This book provides a good reference to follow the stories written by Dan Abnett for Warhammer 40K (Eisenhorn series, Gaunt's Ghost series, Ravenor series, and other short stories). The maps of the planet systems provides good reference for following each character's action in the 40K world and provides the reader reference material to develop their own campaigns. Some of the artwork is of modified black and white photos of models to make it gritty and dirty as if taken live action in combat. Personally would have preferred either full color photos of the actual model or even a computer artist rendition of the vehicles being mentioned.
This book only covers part of the Crusade and would have preferred more maps and a reference roster of the main combatants engaged in each of the planets.

    3 out of 5 stars Good, but.......2006-02-01

I got this book expecting it to be full of WH40K artwork, but most graphics are pictures that have been digitally altered such as taking a picture of a planet and throwing some blurry outlines of starships in it. Lack of clarity is attributed to warp distortion. I know they probably did this to add a sense of realism, but I thought it made a poor product. If the picture says it is a White Scars Astartes then you shouldn't have to stare at a blurry image trying to figure out if the caption is a typo.

The maps are so basic they are pointless.

The few illustrations are very nice, and the text is very good and informative. However, I didn't think this book was worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars You think you know the Warhammer 40,000 universe?Think again.......2006-01-11

This giant, over sized book is a comprehensive account of the first twenty years of The Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and Navy fight crushing battles against the dread menace of Chaos. This is detailed/narrated by Antonid Biota, a senior tactician on the front line, assigned to the staff of Lord General Van Voytz. Biota has been in the thick of the combat right from the beginning and is able to tell it like it is.

Illustrations abound within the covers and you will find many maps and notes. There are even copies of the Casualty Listings. Pictures, not just illustrations, show the details of the hardware and weapons used by the brave souls that hold Chaos at bay. Confidential orders are spread out for you to read. There are even detailed spreadsheets showing the layers within the Hive cites, such as Sangrel Hive (page 16). Troopers, majors, captains, ranks of all types tell about the battles they faced and the horrors they witnessed. By the end you will feel as though you were there yourself.

All the plans and politics are laid bare for all to see, such as a chart detail showing Cybon's proposed rimward expedition, circa 463, and the trailing zones of the Cabal Systems, showing the border worlds assaulted during Macaroth's initial phase in 770-771 (page 68). The Blood Pact is thoroughly explained, squadron badges are shown, and you even get to see, up close, the ships flown. (The Navy Thunderbolt, Cypra-Mundi Pattern XXI, of the One Hundred and First Pacificus Navy Elite Wing, the 'Apostles' Plane, serial 4548456, flown by Major Dario Quint, "Ace of Aces", is shown on page 82).

***** If you think you know all there is to know about the Warhammer 40,000 universe, then you are sadly mistaken. Your imagination cannot possibly do the battles and weapons justice. This is your one chance to own a piece of the action, to see it through the eyes of those who fought in the bloody clashes. As the Saint Sabbat, Epistles cites, "There are no miracles. There are only men." *****

4 out of 5 stars Informative and essential background info to the Gaunt novels.......2005-12-26

Dan Abnett's The Sabbat Worlds Crusade for Games Workshop's Black Library line of books is a must-have for readers of Abnett's series of novels featuring Gaunt and his Ghosts. Though it only makes passing mention to the exploits of Gaunt and his regiment, The Tanith First and Only, it does fill in alot of the background of what the Sabbat Worlds Crusade is all about.

The book describes in detail what the Sabbat Worlds are and how it was founded in the Imperium's past, but it also gives more information to the important characters mentioned only by name in the novels: Warmaster Slaydo and his successor Macaroth up to the many generals and commanders of both the crusading armies and their enemies. Other information included are descriptions of battle and campaign tactics for the early part of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade before Gaunt and his Tanith made their appearance.

The only negative thing i can say about the book is that it ends right up to the point of the latest Gaunt novel. This means there will be a second or maybe even a third book detailing the Sabbat Worlds Crusade and some may not call that a bad thing, but a good thing indeed.

Zimmerman creates an entertaining graphic novel for adults with Blind Squirrel vol. 1. This fine book boasts great artwork featuring b/w near realistic drawings with a textured feel and excellent expressions from the well drawn characters. The stories are setup as vignettes with comedic twists at the end. The scenes are explicit and although geared towards a male audience, they are not likely to offend female readers.

              Book Description

You Wake Me Each Morning That is what listeners around the world have said to Connie for years, as they heard her radio broadcasts in this country and around the world. The first time she heard the phrase was from Sam Lewis, America's long - time Ambassador to Israel.

Some listeners have called the voice sexy, authoritative, funny, snobby, or sophisticated. Connie tries to incorporate it all, as she tells the stories that make the news or change history. Of the many compliments she has received, the most important came from Nelson Mandela. The former South African President said he listened to her broadcasts for years while in prison. He told her, during a Washington news conference, "You Gave My People Hope." Then he went onto say, "You are not as big as I thought you were!"

In her autobiography, Connie tells of the struggles of a one-woman news bureau. She recounts such events as the unrest in Washington in 1968; the killing of Robert Kennedy (she had one of the last interviews with him); the Invasion of Czechoslovakia, where she stayed for six months; a brief kidnapping in Lebanon in l982, and White House coverage of Presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Bill Clinton and beyond.

This is a book for people of all ages, but especially those who are working the hardest to find themselves. To all the message is - never give up, be different from the crowd, and have fun!
