Well illustrated well written.......2007-06-11
Well illustrated and well written guide on the houses of this subject. Some even provide info on Attics and basement. A treat for those interested in the houses of this period.
Beutifully done work this one.
What distinguishes this book is..........2004-02-09
Although the title says "Turn of the Century", this book reprints an 1893 book and is more typical of 19th century than 20th century architecture books. The distinguishing features of this book:
- Nineteen different architects contributed the various designs, so the book showcases a wide variety of styles. Even the presentation varies from one design to another. Each architect gives an elaborate description, pointing out the specific advantages and features of his design, sometimes even telling a story about its history.
- There's a sixteen-page primer entitled "Suggestions On House Building" that describes 19th century house design and construction in remarkable detail. It gives the rationale for the placement of every fixture, including gas outlets and electric lighting, and even debates specific construction techniques like plastering and sheathing.
- The book is bound sideways, so that it must be held with the binding at the top instead of at the side. This makes the book rather inconvenient to browse.

Good Quality Images.......2000-04-19
This book reflects the quality of all of Mr. Sibbett's publications. I use the images in computer applications and the quality of his images are far superior to other books I have bought. I like the range of complexity one book will contain. My finished lamps are only a few inches in size, his designs translate well to this new application of his designs.
Easy to Make Stained Glass Lampshades.......2000-04-02
THis book is excellent for people who are already experienced in working with stained glass. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The designs are lovely. There are templates that you can use that are full sized patterns. There are recommendations for color combinations. All in all a fine book for people with experience and the desire to create Tiffany like lamps. successfully. gloriaber@aol.com

Rob Sheppard, the editor of both Outdoor Photographer and PCPhoto magazines, is also the author of the Epson Complete Guide to Digital Printing.

User Friendly SLR Handbook.......2007-03-20
I found this particular book to be more user friendly than other SLR books. Color photos help as opposed to black and white. The information is easily understood and the book is not overwhelming. For a beginner using a SLR camera, I would recommend this book.
Not That Useful.......2006-09-08
I read Sheppard's book primarily with the hope of better understanding what an SLR would offer vs. a quality point-and-shoot digital camera, and what various lens might offer, given a particular SLR. "PCPhoto Digital SLR Handbook" provided neither.
Probably the simplest way of accomplishing this would have been to provide comparative photos using an SLR vs. simpler camera with standard settings, and differing SLR photos using various lens settings - along with an explanation.
Good Introduction to What you get with Digital SLRs.......2005-07-25
Digital SLR's offer two real advantages over the much more common point and shoot cameras.
First, these cameras are the top of the line from the various companies. Here is where they put in all the new technology first. So any improvements in components such as the CCD's will be here first. While point and shoot cameras now usually have 3 to 4 megapixels of resolution, the digital SLRs start at about 6. The new Nikon D2X has 12. Do you need this much, maybe, maybe not, but Digital SLR's get this kind of thing first.
Second, Digital SLR's have more controls, interchangable lenses, every accessory known to man and so on. More control give you more the ability to do things that you simply couldn't do with the earlier cameras. It also offers you more opportunity to screw up, but with the LCD viewer you can catch this faster.
This book is a general introduction to the features you typically find on Digital SLR's and what you get with those features. It is not so much a description of what cameras are available with what features, there are magazines to do that -- and still they go out of date quickly. Here you will find more generalized information to help you decide what features you really need.
This is the most complete generalized introduction to what these cameras do that I've ever seen. Buy it before you spend a lot of money on a camera, relatively speaking it's cheap.
Book Description
It's the digital age for cameras, as successful pros and beginners alike realize they'll never run out of film, face the wrong weather, ruin a sequence, or lose a treasured album. An award-winning TV director shows how easy it is to enjoy a Digital SLR camera for capturing a baby's first step, the winning basket, or the peak of a sunrise. The explanations come without the usual jargon, but with the author's own photos to illustrate each technique: choosing the right camera for you, the whats and whens of choosing JPEGs or RAWs, startups and setups, darkroom creativity, storage and cataloging for a lifetime, and distribution as greeting cards, gifts, and wild new acts of your own imagination.

ok, but not for people who wants to learn how to use SLR.......2005-09-12
this book is spending time trying to convince people the advantages of digital SLR over traditional film SLR. It talks about some basic details. If you're new to SLR world, you need something else besides this book.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-05-18
I liked this book so much. I am still reading it and enjoying every page .
Best book on photography in decades.......2006-04-19
This is one of those books that you will want to read and then reference. I have been a film SLR photographer for decades and now am on my second generation DSLR. This book reminds me of my old Kodak Photographers Handbook and my Nikon SLR handbook. I think I will use the Pro Digital Photographer's Handbook for many years.
Michael's information about sensor technology compared to film and how lense design affects this is one example of the depth of topic in this great handbook. He also covers the digital workflow from simple (little to no editing) to complex (steps for client based work). The color management section was very useful to calibrate all my devices.
I highly recommend this book for the photographer who understands the basics - depth of field, apertures, shutter speed, etc. (Although he has a great section about sensor size and depth of field).
Buy it and enjoy it!
You need this book.......2006-03-08
So, you want to be a professional photographer? If so, you need this book to provide the kind of information you'll need when starting out. It contains all the nitty-gritty details that are an essential part of learning to turn pro, including information on meeting the needs and expectations of your clients. That's the kind of practical business advice you won't find in other digital photography books.
The amount of useful information in this book is amazing.
Great Book .......2006-01-30
This is a well written digital photo book. It's a great for beginners and reference for experienced photographers. I strongly recommend.
Excellent read and resource.......2005-10-23
In transitioning from film to digital, I needed some books for a quick transition and to avoid reinventing the wheel. I don't have a lot of time, so a focused and detailed reference that could rapidly take me to a functional level was needed. I was very happy with the accessibility and the level of detail presented. I read the whole thing, but realize that I will need to go back to it to get the full value from it (e.g., when I find the need for a particular technique or action). It does address workflow, but that is not its focus, which I would describe as more of a broad, but sufficiently detailed introduction to many issues and techniques available to the digital photographer.

Customer Reviews:
Broad, brief overview.......2004-08-16
The current, second edition of the BESM rulebook has a very good mix of descriptive text and numeric factors, using its numerical systems to give tangible meaning to the descriptions in a balanced manner. I was expecting something similar in this supplement for those rules, but that's not to be found.
The first two chapters give a good overview of the history and conventions of the genre, and the later chapters do address technology, starships, and worlds, but those are done in *very* general terms, with almost no numerical factors as guides. The exception is the character chapter, where there are useful, numerical templates to serve as starting points; in all other areas, though, only vague suggestions are given to the GM.
The trouble is that it attempts to cover a very large field (all of anime space opera) in a very small book; an issue mentioned in the book itself ("this chapter contains no rules, since it would be impossible to cover every possible permutation of space opera technology"). True, but it should be possible to describe at least the most common aspects with some hard/numerical detail (as in the character chapter), to serve as a foundation for the GM's expansion into less-common areas.
For example, at least some attempt to provide a world generation procedure with die rolls that could be adjusted as needed would have been welcome. Instead, the two-page "checklist" is so sparse as to be essentially useless (e.g. the entirety of the Hydrographics section is: "Does the planet have any water, even in the form of polar icecaps? This is an important question, since worlds without water are unlikely to support life as science understands it. Now, this does not mean much in a space opera game, but it is another data point for GMs looking for clues as to the nature of a world and its life forms.").
If one had *no* knowledge of the basics of a space opera setting at all, this book would get them going. But those with at least a moderate familiarity with the genre will find little helpful here. Thus, 3 out of 5.
The chapters:
1. What is Space Fantasy? (4 pages)
2. Campaign Styles (29 pages)
3. Creating Characters (21 pages)
4. Technology (15 pages)
5. Starships (6 pages)
6. Exotic Worlds (11 pages)

Customer Reviews:
Best Thompson Biography.......2007-02-09
This is the most fact-filled accurate and complete biography of Hunter S Thompson thus far. Also, it contains an interesting psychological profile of Hunter S. Thompson because the author is a Ph.D. psychologist.
Great Book.......2003-01-24
I read Thompson's collected letter's, but they are no substitute for this very well-done biography. The author is not doing literary criticism, it is true- he is doing biography. Unlike most interviews/biographies about this wonderfully unique character, he doesn't drool all over the subject. Thompson did some great work, and the persona he crafted was spectacular. This book, along with the collections of letters, makes clear what a tragedy is the result of attempting to stay on the edge for all of these years. His recent work is all recycling and incoherent parodies of himself.
HST is a wasted hull of a man and a mind. His alter ego became himself and the result was a tremendous waste of talent and creativity. The quality of HTS's correspondence in The Proud Highway makes this all the more clear. I am grateful for what he gave- it's just a shame he couldn't keep a handle on it.
pass on this and read "proud Highway".......2001-08-17
I don't know.. I have some ambivalent feelings about Mr. Whitmer's book on Hunter S. Thompson. On one hand I really like reading about Hunter Thompson and suppose that I myself am a kind of weird groupie when it comes to reading about him and a few other writers (I bought this one at a garage sale for 50 cents). On the other hand I really dislike reading gossipy books where the author has only a little understanding of his subject or his work and is mainly just trying to cash in on the artist's celebrity, telling second hand stories that might or might not be true. I myself am guilty of reading these little tabloid-like pieces and almost always feel dirty afterward. Especially if the subject is worthy of some respect in his artistic life and HST certainly is. Artists should be given the space they need to work through their inner struggles while sorting it all out. This requires huge amounts of slack for an artist like Thompson. But then after they die all the lies and sentimental twisted memories can come flooding out and it's all so much less embarrassing for them and for us. I do understand why Mr. Whitmer would want to do a book on HST. And his might be better than the other bios as the above reviewers say. But make no mistake, Peter Whitmer did this one to make some easy money and Hunter Thompson's name sells better a lot better than his own.
3 stars.......2000-03-22
Extensive and enlightening information on Thompson's early past and influences, but overall lacks insight on the main body of his work and life. Nonetheless a compeling book and very hard to put down. Whitmer's ultimate conclusion is that Thompson is a tragic figure, unworthy of adoration. After reading this book, you may agree.
A Good Read.......1998-02-26
It's great background for anyone just becoming interested in Thompson's life and work.
