Book Description
“Southerners seem to stay close to each other, accumulating ties of kinship in a way that ultimately becomes almost impossible to unravel, and thus the family house remains the center of births, marriages, and deaths through the generations.”
—From
Under Live Oaks
There is a part of the South that clings to its past, whether that past is an imagined or a real one. Resonant with antebellum elegance and sometimes turbulent history, the houses of Under Live Oaks act as a touchstone for another time, becoming repositories of rich family traditions for their owners.
This tenacity to hold on to their history is beautifully demonstrated in the decor of these houses, filled with antiques and personal treasures, decorated in the style that was fashionable 150 years ago and that has not been tampered with since. More than 200 images from acclaimed photographer Peter Woloszynski fill the pages of Under Live Oaks, giving a provocative view into a world many never see—a world of faded portraits, shelves of dusty porcelain, dolls lined up in an armchair, family letters, lace fans, invitations to the cotillion, old steamer trunks. These houses were the royal palaces of the age, furnished with the finest objects and fabrics—many imported from Europe—that the first half of the nineteenth century had to offer. Under Live Oaks offers a remarkably consistent vision of a period, a period that takes its place in the dark history of America and that casts a permanent shadow over its legacy.
The houses range from an Italianate villa in Columbus, Georgia, to a masterful Greek Revival mansion in Fairvue, Tennessee; from the charming Catalpa in St. Francisville, Louisiana, to the melancholy Winter Place in Montgomery, Alabama. The classic plantation houses of Natchez, Mississippi, compete in beauty with an elegant townhouse in Walterboro, South Carolina, and the historic Sherwood Forest in Charles City, Virginia. All the states of the Deep South are represented. A few of the houses are open to the public; others are unknown and unvisited except by family and friends. Yet all of them stand as witnesses to a bygone era.
Noted author Caroline Seebohm eloquently casts the stories of the land, the houses, and their owners. She vividly evokes the power of the architecture and interior design of these houses, and through her we hear the owners’ pride of place and staunch allegiance to their family history. Under Live Oaks is an intimate tour of the Old South, an experience available to only a few and that in the not-too-distant future will be lost forever.

I wish I could give this 10 stars!.......2007-04-24
I own a 120 year old farmhouse in the South and I am fascinated w/ the history and culture. This book is a JOY! I LOVE reading about the families in the book, the photos are GORGOUS and I have been unable to put this book down! Of all the 'Home' books I've read this is by far my absolute favorite! ENJOY!!!
Photo's are great.......2003-08-22
If you like old houses of the South this book has some wonderful pictures. Some interesting photos of the interior rooms with a little bit of personal collections of the families. A great coffe table book. Not deep reading.
Southern Gothic Rehash.......2002-12-13
Both author and photographer of "Under Live Oaks" are English, and their knowledge of the South is distinctly secondhand and second-rate. Seebohm even acknowledges needing a crash course in Southern architecture from a friend! Instead of genuine knowledge and insight, we are offered a gauzy gothic cocktail of Hollywood cliches. (Mix one shot of "Gone With the Wind" with a dash of "Suddenly Last Summer" and a gallon of "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.") For a beautiful and intelligent book on Southern architecture, try "Architecture of the Old South" by Mills Lane. For photos that shed some light on Southern myths and realities, try "William Eggleston's Guide."

Very helpful.......2006-12-19
Angel Matsumoto's style of drawing isn't like the other how to draw manga artists' at all, but that's not a bad thing. Her style is more kid friendly to me and that's totally fine. Her book's content includes: Chapter 1- Materials and simple means of usage, Chapter 2- Creating manga, Chapter 3- Drawing people and animals, Chapter 4- Manga techiques, Chapter 5- Depicting greenery and 3- dimensional objects, Chapter 6- Creating well- composed manga, and as a added bonus this book talks about: In depth discusion: 1. What is masking? 2.All about tracing 3.Creating new characters for publication submissions 4.Exaggerated people and animals 5.Cut and paste and 6.collecting reference materials. If you ask me, this book has it all! It is extremely useful and it gives you a little nudge to coming up with your own unique style. This book is perfect for those starting out with manga and need a little help with certain areas. I would definately recommend this book! This book doesn't have any nudity at all, so it is perfect for those who are offended by nudity.
Not what you'd expect.......2006-05-23
This book is packed with tips and lesson, but it was kind of a disappointment, first of the author didn't even draw the cover page and second he's a comedy artist. Theres nothing wrong with him being a comic arists but the style makes characters look very child like and funny (it was hard to take seriously).Although there is a very, very 'awesome' part, cross-hacthing and hacthing which is an alternative to screen tones (which are very expensive).it even covers how to use white and black, make effects such as rain, and it covers in detail paneling. This book is mostly a building block for people who draw well, and want to start creating manga.for example, the sectio which covers flowers and such is very simple , giving you an idea of how to create flowers.
This has it all!.......2004-11-23
This is hands-down the most complete book available that covers drawings and making manga out there so far! It's chock full of info (191 pages!) and covers everything - even making your manga title, types of manga genres, props (machines, daily items, etc), adding text, manga layouts, and lots more.
I would recommend this book as the first book you should get if you're really interested in making manga (even beating out the HTDM Getting Started or the HTDM Vol. 1: Compiling Characters book, in my list). Each chapter is subdivided into their own topic sections. For example, under chapter 5, there is: Insects, Flowers 1, Flowers 2, Grass and Trees 1, Grass and Trees 2, Grass and Trees 3, Water, Rocks and Stones, and it goes on. Considering this book touches upon a lot of topics, it only gives out the most important info about drawing or doing something. From here, you can opt to get more topic-specific books like the HTDM Giant Robots or other specific How to Draw books.
The characters depicted in this book are more on the Saturday morning cartoon end but don't let that turn you off, though, as the information in here is priceless and helpful even to an intermediate artist as myself.
This is an excellent book to get for the beginner artist or aspiring manga-ka and becomes an all-in-one reference book about manga even if your skill improves.
The "Toolbox" of the How to Draw Manga series!.......2004-02-05
This volume is literally packed with several dozens of "mini-lessons" in creating Manga, including drawing, story layout, character design basics, lettering, and plotting the story. Each lesson is about a page or two in length, so there's quite a bit of useful information in the book.
Other books in the "HTDM" series cover many of these topics in much greater detail; however, "Super Basics" is handy for quickly reviewing a particular technique or concept. If you aspire to draw manga, the book will give you a taste of what goes into producing a Japanese comic. And if you hit a creative block, I bet you'll find a lesson or a tip in "Super Basics" to get you going again.
As other reviewers have mentioned, "Super Basics" assumes you already have some proficiency in drawing; it is more concerned with the down-and-dirty details of producing the comic itself. Even if you have some manga-drawing experience under your belt, I suspect you will learn some new tricks from this book.
A Great Way To Start.......2004-02-03
Of all the books in the How to Draw series, Super Basics is a great introduction to the art form. No other book offers as much basic information on manga: from inking technique to generating story ideas, the book is quite comprehensive. However, to fit so much information in this 190 page book it does keep the "lessons" brief, in some cases one or two pages per topic. But then again, that's why it's called "Super Basics".
This book won't show you how to draw manga a specific way, but it doesn't intend to. It offers tips and ideas so that you can create your own original story and style. If you're just starting out or are simply looking for a source of inspiration, you may want to give this book a try.
Book Description
With a collection of illustrations, comments, and the sources of inspiration by the artist Yasuyuki Tsurugi on each piece, this volume is a must have for people who love Japanese anime/manga-style drawing. Don't miss it!

Contains 50 more pages than previous volumes!
Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference book for the beginner and beyond.......2006-08-01
I figure that there are three books in the 'How To Draw Manga' (HTDM) series that can really help someone starting out: HTDM Volume 10 (Getting Started), More HTDM Volume 1 (The Basics of Character Drawing), and this volume. While the first two books mentioned focus on teaching the reader how to draw and ink characters, Super Basics crams a much broader range of topics into a larger book.
Super Basics is broken up into six chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of manga drawing. Chaper One has twenty pages focussing on materials: pens and nibs, stencils and tools, and the drawing process. Chapter Two looks at how a manga of various lengths might be structured, incorporating the plot, it's development and resolution. Chapter Three offers a brief (twenty-five page) look at drawing the human figure and animals. Chapter Four is manga techniques: hatching, speed lines, dots and effects. Chapter Five covers outdoor environments such as gardens, trees, weather, props and perspective. Finally Chapter six is a brief discussion on correctly composing manga panels and pages.
I found that the ninety pages that comprise chapters four and five were well worth the price of the book. There is such a breadth of information covered, particularly in hatching, gardens, weather and props such as vehicles and everyday items. Be mindful that this book is more for reference than for teaching; some level of ability - even if it's only a basic level - is assumed.
HTDM: Super Basics will be an invaluable reference book for the beginner, and will likely remain so for quite sometime.
REALLY FUN!.......2005-03-27
This is an EXCELLENT book; it helped me a lot.Unfortunatley, I am not very good at drawing manga! :( Oh well, I'll get that right soon :)

Customer Reviews:
Very generic " Guide ".......2005-09-13
The book was written before the camera was even in production. It uses this aa a reason for not completely explaining anything.
More than 50% of the book is basic photographic technique, not specific N70 operation. The owners manual you can download on the net for free is more usefull.
nikon n70 magic lantern guide.......2005-09-10
Very conplete information and illistrutions on my camera. I have three other magic lantern guides for my other nikons.
Good Supplement.......2004-06-01
I purchased the book to go with an used N70 I bought. The camera did not come with a manual, so the this book is helpful. The book does a good job of explaining all the functions. It did cover the LCD readout on the top of the camera, but it did not explain all of the icons in the view finder. For example, the first icon is a focus assist (circle between two arrows). The circle and arrows blink as you adjust the focus on a manual lens. I would not have known what these icons where for if I hadn't located a manual on-line. This may not be an issue for an auto-focus lens.
Great as a Manual.......2003-08-04
When I received my N70, it was at a school auction, and I purchased it for $..., without the manual. I was ecstatic at the deal that I got. It wasn't till I got some film in it that I realized it was a mixed blessing. Yes, the camera was great, and being an armature photographer helped me decipher some of what was on the camera, however there were depictions on the screen that I had no clue as to their meanings.
Enter the Magic Lantern Guides... when I found this gem at the bookstore, I knew it was what I wanted. Since I was not in a real hurry to obtain it, and it was cheaper here, I purchased it here with other books. This by far has been the most helpful. Not only does it tell you what all the buttons do, but it does give some useful tips on how to make better pictures.
A must for N70 owners........2002-03-06
In short this is a must have book if you own an N70. This little gem takes you through photographic basics and how they apply to the N70 and it's functions.

Beautiful..........2004-06-24
This is both a good read and a feast for the eyes. Silke has such an extensive knowledge of illustration techniques, the history of pinup art and of Bettie Page that he's a natural to create this great book. Anyone with even a passing interest in the above would be well served to buy this book. A winner!

With realistic, wonderfully colored illustrations.......2003-11-17
The Three Sedonas is a heartwarming tale by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger that recounts how the first Sedona came to Oak Creek Canyon in Arizona, and the history of how the town of Sedona came to be. Trevor V. Swanson's beautiful, realistic, wonderfully colored illustrations splendidly distinguish this picture book story of The Three Sedonas, and the pioneers who lived and shaped an American community's history.

Book Description
Strange things happened to the author in a series of three day visits to Sedona, which strained his belief system. He uses these experiences to gain insight into his life and offers tools which anyone can use to improve their lives. Mystical, zen-like, this book is a self-help book disguised as an adventure story, in the style of Castenada. Whether you believe in space ships, astral projection, past lives, and similar topics, you will enjoy the lively style and ultimate message.
Customer Reviews:
Where's the Movie?.......2001-12-09
A friend of mine who met Mr. Klevit a few years ago, gave me the book for my 18th birthday last week. I have already read it and loaned it to a friend, with several others waiting. It's kind of a science fiction book with messages for improving your life. It doesn't preach to me, and I like that, which some books and shows do. It lays it out there. Be anybody you want to be. Respect. Self-love. Where you fit in the scheme of things--the Big Picture. This book is full of hope, while it is exciting. I plan to get some books on meditation and zen, thanks to the author. Not only can this book get you thinking about your life, and what you can do to improve it, it is a fun read. The divisions--chapters are clever, too, "In the Grotto," which is as exciting as Stephen King's "Pet Cemetary", "E=MC2," and other names to get you curious. I hope they make this book into a movie. It would be a hit.
I'm A Believer!.......2001-05-25
Sometimes a "quest Book" is boring or tired. Sometimes, it's credility is suspect. Not this book on either count. I bought Three Days in Sedona based on some reviews I read. Although they were all positive, the readers were not sure if they believed all of the author's "wierd" experiences. Well, I have seen a spaceship (in Idaho--twice). And I have "travelled in space." And I don't think these things are wierd. I admire the way Klevit describes his unusual experiences with child-like wonder but with no excuses or apologies. And he is right on. Best of all, his observations about his life helped me examine mine. I think I am a better person for it. Thank you, sir.
This book changed my life.......2001-04-05
By the time I finished the introduction, I already had enough ideas to change my life. That was the author's intention, I guess, as he pointed out, very cleverly, that once you believe that just about anything is possible--like science fiction becoming reality--then it applies to your own life, too. I like his style. It is straightforward, very conversational, like he is sitting there talking to you. Even though some of things he claims he did seem pretty far out there, like space travel, aliens and the like, his sincerity makes it hard to not believe him. And whether you do or not doesn't matter, because he uses his experiences as tools. Creative visualization, open mindedness, seeing the big picture, loving yourself, and a lot of things authors are writing about now (14 years later), give this book a lot of credibility. Klevit was ahead of his time. And he doesn't just talk about stuff. He gives suggestions I have been able to implement and improve my attitude and my life. Where's the sequel, sir?
Once I started it, I finished it the same night........1999-02-03
My husband bought "Three Days" for me after we heard the author, Alan Klevit, speak before a group we belong to. The book was as engaging as the stories he told. As hard-to-believe events happened to him, the author managed to observe himself and how he reacted to situations, and he passed those observations on to us. That made the book as useful as it was exciting. A lot of his observations are easy to adopt, his view about parents, dealing with fear, opening your mind to all possibilities, personal development through introspection, all woven together in an exciting book that could just as easily be a novel as a quest book, as he claims. I believe all the events happened to him, but even if you don't, what he learns and shares with us makes it all worthwhile. His writing style is direct and deceptively simple. His sentences are short and action packed. Once you start reading, it takes off, and I literally finished it in one night. And it left me limp. I am now using one of the meditation techniques he describes, and it is definitely working. I look forward to the sequal or whatever Mr. Klevit writes next. Carlos Castenada, move over.
I found the book both useful and thoroughly engaging........1999-01-14
"Three Days in Sedona" describes a series of bizarre events which happened to the author during a series of visits to Sedona. He found that they strained his belief system, especially sighting a ufo, hearing voices of Native American spirits, out-of-the-body experiences, and the like. He used these events to bolster his belief that anything is possible and shows the reader how to use that in shaping one's life into whatever you want for yourself. He offers insights into meditation and its application for personal development, as well as other tools we can use to improve ourselves. The book is written with a light touch. There is just enough humor, a zen-like perspective offered almost casually, and a lightning fast read. Anyone reading the self-help books being marketed today will find this book has a lot of the same information, even though it was written nearly a decade ago. In that sense, "Three Days in Sedona" was ahead of its time, although it is not dated, in the sense that it is as timely as ever. If you want your helpful tools offered withought ponderous admonitions or condescending platitudes, this book will serve you well. In summary, I found it both useful and thoroughly engaging.
