Urban Details Los Angeles : Streetlights
ASIN: 1890449091 |
Book Description
Stairways, fountains, and streetlights are among the many overlooked small things that grace our cityscapes. Seeing and appreciating them is the idea behind the Urban Details series. Many have significant histories and are associated with important civic leaders, and many are merely the result of some functional requirement, but nearly all are the product of the loving hand labor of talented artisans.?Discover where Laurel and Hardy pushed a grand piano up a long stairway. Imagine corseted ladies negotiating hundreds of narrow steps heading to the streetcar in high heels carrying shopping bags. How about a fountain dedicated to Rudolph Valentino commissioned after his death by a group of loving fans? Learn about the "5-Globe Lewellyn" and other historic streetlights still decorating once-elegant boulevards.?These three compact books are designed as small photo albums with handwritten captions conveying the sense of personal discovery the author felt while pursuing her research. Urban Details will inspire readers to rediscover their cities.

Customer Reviews:
I would hardly call these people masters.......1999-02-19
First let me say that I had previously written a more positive review of this book; however, I may have been a little over zealous.
I asked Amazon.com to remove my review as I no longer felt the way I did about the book. Many months later I see my review still on the board, so I have taken the time to write a more accurate review of this book.
Now to the review:
The book has a good section on the Fit Deformation command of the lofting component. The model that you make (a woman's high heeled shoe) is a good practical model for learning the Fit Deformation command and the other features that go along with the lofting component. A pretty good section on animating a hopping kangaroo, however...
In the tutorial that shows you how to model and animate a kangaroo, the author clearly states that the boolean function may not work when modeling the kangaroo. She's right! I never got it to work. Boolean functions are indeed tricky, but to put a tutorial that is clearly going to have a difficult time performing a boolean function shows extreme short sightedness. As a seasoned 3DSR4 user, I had the patience to try this boolean over a dozen times before I gave up. I cannot imagine new users truly understanding the usefulness of the boolean function if it doesn't work in a tutorial.
Half the book is made up of one tutorial in which half of that tutorial is composed of programming. Most 3D artists are artists, not programers. I don't mind learning some scripting but the tutorial they provide (which is pretty neat, by the way) is way too long and complicated.
In sum, they should get rid of the kangaroo tutorial and the space buggy tutorial.
I learned a little, but the book's out of date........1998-10-29
This book, written ages ago for MAX 1.2, doesn't do the job now that MAX is up to v2.5. While I did learn a few interesting tricks, for the most part I was dissapointed. Several tutorials contained blatant errors or would not work as explained. Most of what you learn here, you learn by fixing the author's errors or figuring out the things he forgot to tell you. Add to that the fact that it's out of date, and it adds up to a definite last resort resource book.
Best starter book on the market.......1998-10-15
This is the book for anyone using 3D Studio MAX for the first time. After completing the first 3 chapters I was able to begin reading (with understanding) the more comprehensive manuals for experienced MAX users. GREAT MANUAL, THANK YOU Michele and company.
Good book overall, I found some small errors.......1998-09-27
I was pleased with the book. It started out with the basics and worked up from there. Some of the advenced expression controllers took some tinkering to get them to work by it also helps you understand them better. worth the money!
THE BEST!!.......1998-08-24
This book tells you all you need to know about MAX. Everyone should buy it!!!

The beginning of Popeye.......1999-09-23
This book has the 1928 Thimble Theatre stories which lead up to and include Popeye's early days in Thimble Theatre.Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy found a good friend and protector in Popeye and Olive Oyl found a real sweetheart.See how Popeye met them, his voyage to Dice Island, how he became invulnerable, when he fell in love with Olive, how his and Castor's Depression-Related(see Oct.29,1929 strip)investment led to Popeye's first meeting with the Sea Hag on her ship, the Black Barnacle.(Spinach isn't even mentioned.)
Customer Reviews:
Not what you think.......2004-12-30
This book is printed in French but no where in the AD is this mentioned. I stuck with it.

Popeye's Peak Period.......1999-03-19
This was Segar at his finest.Learn about Eugene the magical jeep, find out how Popeye found his father and laugh at all the amazing stories and gags.Popeye was at his finest those years.Wimpy was at his mooching best-and you might even enjoy the goofy antics of Oscar or Toar.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Nastolgic Look.......2000-03-27
Popeye, has been a cultural Icon of the USA for over 60 years and this book brings to the public forum the witty, warm and often whimsical nature of the original Segar serial. It is a must for all collectors and for children yearning to find out just why their parents make them eat their spinach.
Sadly,Segar's final story was unfinished.......1999-03-05
This final volume in the wonderful Popeye series concludes unsatisfactrily.the stories that segar wrote in 1937 & 1938 are top-notch(A Sock for Susan's Sake is very good,Wild Oats is a scream, Valley of the Goons is delightful)but his unfortunate end from cancer in 1938 prevented him from truly concluding the story of King Swee'Pea- which Tom Sims & Doc Winner brought to a less-than -satisfacory conclusion.Recommedned to all Popeye fans and Segar completists because Segar was reaching his peak as a storyteller at this time. As Mort Walker said,"Maybe he wouldn't have been able to maintain quality during the 40s and 50s-but I sure would've liked to see him try."
Customer Reviews:
Popeye and his Friends and Foes.......1999-05-17
This covers the early career of Segar's swab. The story of Popeye's first encounter with the Sea Hag is here-and how Popeye and Castor Oyl solve a few mysteries.Castor Oyl becomes a detective in this volume, and Popeye has a chance to remind Olive Oyl how he loves her.The ol' salt also tries to ease the Depression with his One-Way Bank.Popeye also has the chance to explain himself as only he can: "I Yam What I Yam an' Thas' All I Yam!"
Customer Reviews:
Popeye Comes Into His Own.......1999-03-10
These are the strips where Popeye is truly defined as a character. His spinach is mentioned and used, his relationship with Olive Oyl is further defined and he has his first(and for Segar,only)fisk-fight with Bluto.King Blozo of Nazilia,General Bunzo, John Holster,Woo Fong,Prof.Smith and Oo Long the parrot also figure prominently in this volume.
Customer Reviews:
Popeye and politics.......1999-05-26
These stories tell of the election of Nazilia in 1933,when Popeye helps a ruler remain on the throne. There are many satirical looks at the whole electoral system then. There are other stories of Popeye when he is doing his best to live within society...and you can learn whose child swee'pea is in this volume.

The Popeye origins.......1999-03-05
Contrary to what this says,vol.5 contains daily strips of Thimble Theatre from 1928-29.Those only familiar with the anmated Popeye will be quite surprised to learn that he began as a one-shot sailor for the story A Voyage to Dice Island. Castor Oyl and Ham Gravy were the main stars of Thimble theatre then.see how Popeye gradualy assumed star status, fell in love with Olive Oyl and became Castor's friend and companion.there is even a reference to the beginning of the Great Depression that year.(See the strip dated Oct.29, 1929)Popeye was much more humane and a lot funnier than any of the cartoons depicted him in later years.(Believe it or not,in this book there is absolutely no reference to spinach.)

Book Description
This book is a personal memoir from Leonard Koppett, a man widely considered to be the dean of American sports writers.
Customer Reviews:
Koppett's Books Are First Rate.......2004-06-14
When it comes to sports books a book by writers such as Roger Kahn, Roger Angell, Fred Lieb, or Leonard Koppett you can be fairly certain you are in for a book that will educate as well as entertain you. If his final effort before his death Leonard Koppett tells us how the importance of the press box in which so many writers brought fans the news of the events on the field has changed over the last several decades. Print was the medium in which information was initially passed from reporter to fan. The advent of radio brought a new medium which supplemented newspapers. Now television brings information to us practically instantaneously, and many of the newspapers that used to serve the major cities in previous decades have gone out of business. The book is sprinkled with humorous anecdotes regarding some of the literary giants who populated the sporting scene throughout the 20th century. Koppett popularized the use of statistics in his columns written as a correspondent for The Sporting News, but he also provides examples how statistics can be misused or misleading. Ron Fairly and Koppett were discussing the high batting average of bunter Brett Butler when Fairly stated, "If you took away his bunts and dribblers he'd be hitting .260." Koppett answered, "Sure, and if you took away his outs, he'd be hitting 1.000." Pitch counts citing the number of strikes and balls is also deceiving, because it assumes every pitch swung at is a strike. He says the correct statistic should say, "96 pitches, 32 hit fair, 27 strikes (called or swung at and missed) or fouls, 37 balls." Koppett also covers the New York teams in all sports that he covered for the New York Times. After working in New York for several years he then moved to Palo Alto, California, and covered the New York teams when they came to play in California. This is not a traditional sports book, but concentrates on a newspaperman's view of the sporting scene and how the coverage of sports has changed over the years. The book contains 53 chapters, but each one is only from five to eight pages long. If you feel this subject would be of interest to you, I'm sure you would enjoy the book since you are reading it from a quality author.
Book Description
An angel spreads his wings. . . .
Sonny Barger is the number-one spokesman for the motorcycle experience. His New York Times bestseller, Hell's Angel, was an exhilarating history of his adventures with the world's most notorious motorcycle club. Now he brings us rousing, moving, and wildly entertaining true stories of his renegade brothers and sisters in the relentless pursuit of liberty, individuality, and the "ultimate ride."
And what stories he has to tell -- freewheeling, bare-knuckle tales of brawls and battles, brotherhood, breathtaking adventures, crazy quests, and the inevitable classic scrapes with "John Law." The most colorful legends and unforgettable characters of biker lore come alive in this book. In addition, celebrities like Steve McQueen, Johnny Paycheck, and David Crosby thunder through these pages in a sensational collection of rebel tales that runs the gamut from poignant and inspiring to thrilling and utterly outrageous.
Whether you ride, have never ridden, or dream of riding, Ridin' High, Livin' Free is a reading experience you won't soon forget -- a fascinating glimpse into a unique culture of freedom that recognizes only one commandment: the code of the road.

Ridin' High, Livin' Free: Hell-Raising Motorcycle Stories.......2007-07-19
I bought this book for my brother-in-law. So I had to ask him what he thought. He told me how much he enjoyed the book. So buy this book for anybody that is a biker or a biker at heart.
Stories from the road. .......2006-12-31
This isn't really a biography, but more of a collection of stories from Sonny Barger. A lot of them are very funny, and some of them are tales from the road that would make anyone want to hop on a motorcycle. The problem with this book is the introduction when Sonny Barger tells you that some of the stories may be true, and some of them may not be true. He leaves it up to you as you read, but either way the stories are fun to read, and some of them will have you laughing for quite awhile. He even goes outside of the Hell's Angels into other clubs he's aware of and other people he knows sharing stores from them, one of them was on the Dragons leader who was about to buy a Honda until his club members knocked on his door and asked him if it was true.

Not as good as the first.......2005-10-13
Book of short stories of members and events. Kinda left me wanting more.
Not as bad as some, worse than others.......2005-04-26
I was excited when this came out, as I was going through a bit of hero worship regarding bikers. Of course, now years later and a motorcyclist myself, my awe of this life-style has paled.
Barger has to be given credit for where it is due. He's managed to make money of the Hell's Angels for fifty years now. That's pretty impressive. And to be willing to openly discuss portions of his life in that society takes guts. However, this book falls short in many areas.
One, the few stories that relate to the Hell's Angels are over-the-top. It's just too hard to believe these exploits.
Two, the non-Hell's Angels stories aren't any better. The picture painted of bikers throughout this book is that they are greasy, dirty, smelly and disgusting. Even the women profiled here are portrayed as little more than tramps.
Three, we're subjected to Barger's attempt at fiction. Atleast it's only boring, unlike his actual fiction book (DEAD IN FIVE HEARTBEATS), which is a fictionalization of his autobiography with some preposterous action sequences thrown in.
So, if you're really into juvenille biker stories, this is up your alley. If not, but you want to explore this genre, there are plenty of better books available.
