OK, but not what I was looking for........2007-02-13
I was excited to get this book in the mail, as I thought it would have some real good ideas on how to build a larger home on the water that had some character. I found most of the homes rather odd, homes for people that would name their children Jupiter or Flower. I am back today ordering more books. Also most homes either are RIGHT on the water or set back in rock. Didn't find much in the way of regular 100ft setback from the water, woods, maybe a walkout basement type of MN lakes home. There was one from WI but again, it was right on the water, which you normally can not build now days.

This book is wonderful at capturing the rare beauty of various architectural wonders through vivid photographs and welcoming text. You never get bored flipping through this book and it is incredibly inspiring. It combines several differently designed homes that will appeal to a variety of readers. Reading this book is like daydremaing on paper. Highly recommended.
Architect.......2006-03-11
I found this book both educational and handsome in content and in photography. As an architect practicing in different regions of the country, I'm always thankful for having opportunities to do design work in Maine. Maine, as a place to live, is simply wonderful and unique, but the sense of peace in these "Houses on the Water" is elevated creating a noble inspiration for the reader.
A House on the Water- inspiration for dreaming and designing.......2004-01-19
As a landscape designer, I was consistenly impressed with how these wonderful houses fit into their site, lifting out the critical views and respecting the nature of the place. Having enjoyed the houses that Robert Knight designs, I was pleased to learn why his houses and those selected for his book are so satisfying to see and experience. O'Rourke's photographs are spectacular and with the plans, really help to visualize the structure and the setting and how they fit together. Design professionals and homeowners alike with whom I've shared this book rave about it. A perfect gift for friends and family!

Beginners Look Elsewhere.......2006-05-16
Author clearly has a wonderful command of the medium & her text is fairly descriptive, but is probably limited by the minuscule format (see below). As a beginner w/limited time, I had very high hopes for this book. I'm sure an accomplished artist can execute the paintings in this book in 10 minutes, but I don't think I'll be able to for a long time, if ever. I'm finding Watercolors in a Weekend by Hazel Harrison more suitable to my skill level. Subjects covered offer a little something for everyone -- landscapes, animals, people, flowers, & still life and certainly showcase the author's skill, versatility, & speed.
One caveat: This book is small, VERY, VERY, SMALL -- (about 3 & 1/4" x 4 & 5/8" and less than 1/2" thick). Perhaps the weight listed should have tipped me off, but who checks the weight of a book?

The Master Printer's Workbook is not a classic how-to text, but I can't agree with the negative reviews posted by some other readers. Macleod uses a selection of superb photos as examples for demonstrating various printing techniques. Images of Iggy, Paul Weller or Kylie are a lot more interesting than the pix you see in most books on the subject.

This is without a doubt, one of the worst books on technique I have ever read. So poorly written that I did not even finish it. Seems to be more of a showcase for the authors work, than anything else. Pictures but darn little info about how they were made. Don't waste your money.

I agree with the above review 100%. I had great expectations about this book yet experienced disappointment about the sparse technique details. Bartlett's book is immensely more fantastic in its presentation and can't be beat!
Great photos but info about each print is lacking...........2003-09-11
I love the prints in this book but I wish the author would have spent more time detailing how he got the final print. I recomend "Black & White: Photographic Printing Workshop" by Larry Barlett. Larry's book also has beautiful images but he shows where he dodged and burned and he shows the straight print and the finished print. Buy Larry's book before this one.

This book is a must own for any fan of Matsumoto. If you are unfamiliar with his work, this is a great place to start.Taiyo's work is not your typical big-eyed, blue-haired, sobby school-girl anime. Rather, it is contemplative and cinematic.Taiyo's books have always had that cinematic quality, but this book really shows what a great story teller he is.The pacing is thoughtful, the action is explosive, and the drawings are to die for! Don't let the scribbly, unrefined line work fool you. THIS MAN CAN DRAW!
Just buy it. Before you know it, you will be searching for every story he has ever done. I did.

Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106-43
BCE), Roman lawyer, orator, politician and philosopher, of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era which saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In the fourteenth century Petrarch and other Italian humanists discovered manuscripts containing more than 900 letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man all the more striking because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Cicero is in twenty-nine volumes.

Part autobiography/ part history of British political and trade union life since the Second World War, Geoffrey Goodman's From Bevin to Blair: Fifty Years' Reporting from the Political Front Line is a pleasure to read. Indeed, it serves as a reminder not only of far off events, but how those same events have shaped and formed the current political scene in Britain.
Taking as his starting point his childhood in Stockport, subsequent service in the Second World War and early path to a career on fleet street with a succession of newspapers, most notably the Daily Mirror, Goodman skilfully blends not only the details of his own career as a journalist, but also the relationship between the Labour party and the trade unions.
In the hands of another writer this could seem contrived and unconvincing, however, Goodman reveals a remarkable talent for being present at the turn of events. Rather like a journalistic version of Zelig, he manages to pop up exactly when far-reaching decisions are to be made.
Friends with such Labour lights as Minister of Health Aneurin Bevin, Prime Ministers Wilson and Callaghan, as well as a sprinkling of Conservative luminaries such as Willie Whitelaw, Goodman had a front seat at much of the trade union turmoil that swirled around successive Labour governments leading to their eventual downfall in 1979 and the emergence of Thatcherism.
One of the most interesting elements of From Bevin to Blair is Goodman's ability to look back at the relationship between the Labour party and the TUC and show how there were hints of the rise of Thatcherism long before it had even coalesced around the Iron Lady. When doing this, he is painfully honest - and fully aware of the opinion changing power of hindsight.
Was there anything that could have been done to avoid the Winter of Discontent? Were the Unions and the Labour party staring at the abyss long before this time. My impression of Goodman is that he believes they were. Goodman hints at tectonic shifts in society long before the late 1970's, particularly in the 1960s. For this reason Thatcherism appears as a late arrival, catching up with the already changing mores and perceptions of society.
As a result, in parts of this book, there is a sense of oncoming doom and of an attendant powerlessness in the face of changes that were only half understood by the Labour leadership. Goodman paints a vivid picture of Harold Wilson, tired, burnt out, wanting to resign -- perhaps sensing the changes in society -- and a feisty James Callaghan, only half understanding what was coming, but railing like Lear against the rush of events: succumbing only in the last few days of the 1979 election.
In other parts of the book, Goodman provides a timely investigation of the possible plots against Harold Wilson, who with his pipe and "white heat" apparently represented such a threat to the establishment. He also gives some excellent insights into the complicated man that was Robert Maxwell, even offering his own view on the man's demise.
Journalists or readers from other countries, particularly the United States, might be surprised at Goodman's willingness to work for the Wilson and Callaghan governments in the Anti-Inflation Unit. In the U.S., where Roger Ailes received criticism for offering advice to President George Bush after September 11, the fact that there is such a thin veil between British politics and media will add another interesting dimension to the book.
Overall, this is a must read book, not only for those interested in the history of post-war journalism and industrial relations but also for those puzzled by their parent's use of so many candles in those distant 1970's. For those born after this date, the book is a reminder that the trade unions once occupied a very different position in British society to the one they do today.
At the beginning of the book, Goodman quotes from Gore Vidal's Palimpsest autobiography that "before the cards that one is dealt by life are the cards that fate has dealt." From this autobiography it is clear that Goodman took the hand fate dealt him and played it pretty well.

Great Book about making the change.......2006-11-13
This is a great book talking about a couples experiences making the move from the states to Costa Rica. Building two homes. It talks about the upsides and the problems they encountered along the way. I found it very entertaining. Kind of brings you back home to Costa Rica. Enjoyed hearing the stories of daily life in paradise as well as the pitfalls along the way. The book gives you a real feel of this couples experience of adapting to a new country. Not a retirement book but one that is very entertaining for those infatuated with life in Costa Rica.

Enjoying the daily life of Martin and Robin.......2006-07-17
I am enjoying the events as they build in what sounds like a very beautiful place. I will be visiting Costa Rica soon, and am reading as much as I can about CR before I go. When I am there, I will decide if I could adapt to life there on a full time basis. I find myself thinking that living in a less populated area, as the Rice's do, would appeal to me much more than the city life. The book is very discriptive, and I can see the picture he is painting in words. I was only disappointed about one thing... The website listed in the book does not exist. I was looking forward to seeing the pictures he speaks of in the book.
