Book Description
Since the
AIA Guide to New York City was first published in 1967, it has been recognized as the ultimate guide to the metropolis's buildings, in all five boroughs -- Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island -- from nineteenth-century brownstones and tenements to modern high-rise apartments and museums. The latest edition of this urban classic takes a fresh look at the architectural treasures that define New York -- from its most characteristic landmarks to its less famous local favorites.
To prepare this edition -- the first revision since 1987 -- Norval White has visited and revisited more than 5,000 buildings, making this by far the most complete guide of its kind. This generously illustrated handbook presents the structures of the New York City--from the magnificent to the obscure -- in over 3,000 new photographs, more than 130 new maps, and hundreds of revised and new entries. Beyond the skyscrapers and historical buildings, the guide also leads the way to the city's bridges, parks, and public monuments.
From the tip of the Empire State Building to the brownstones in Brooklyn, the
AIA Guide to New York City reveals how the city's spirit, fortitude, and character are captured and expressed in its architecture. Thoughtful and humorous descriptions include fascinating bits of local information that bring the city's history to life, telling the stories behind the bricks and mortar. Together, the maps, photographs, and expert critiques invite you on a special grand tour of the city at your own pace.
This guide is a definitive record of New York's architectural heritage and provides a compact, authoritative directory for lovers of New York City all over the world. Its portability and encyclopedic quality make it an ideal traveling companion for any walker in the city. For the sightseer, the architect, or anyone on a casual stroll, the
AIA Guide to New York City is the book to grab on your way out the door.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and Interesting--Especially for New Yorkers.......2006-12-06
This book may seem like nothing more than a tourist guide to New York City, but that assumption could not be further from the truth. This book is insightful, interesting and very eye opening, even to myself who has lived in NYC for some time. It helped me appreciate this city as a living work of art, a place where every style of architecture comes together on a truly unique canvas.
A real selling point are the walks outside of Manhattan that this book offers. This shows off a side of New York hardly ever covered by other book or looked into by tourists, and it is very interesting.
The pictures are few and far between, and not large enough to give you an in depth look at the buildings described, but the walks layed out in the book are well organized, easy to follow and very interesting.
Buy this book and go explore one of the greatest city in the world!
Fascinating guide.......2006-01-18
This guide really opens up a perspective of Manhattan with tons of information on architecture and building styles. It gets you thinking about the structures that you see every day. I am learning a lot from it.
Exhaustive Guide to the Greatest City in the World.......2005-02-17
This book is the benchmark for books of this type. It doesn't just focus on Manhattan, it does justice to the wonderful architecture in the other buroughs. It is just amazing how many great buildings this city has, the book just goes on and on. The quality of the book is first rate and the pictures, though B&W, are crisp, though understandably small. The latest update was 2000, so the World Trade Center is mentioned as extant, and some of the newer buildings in N.Y., like Time Warner and Bloomberg are not mentioned, but that is for the next update I suppose, New York is ever changing.
The City in your hand.......2005-01-19
What can we say about New York that hasn't been said? It's an awesome place, and its architecture is truly astonishing in scope, diversity and importance. This book is a selective catalogue of the City's most important historical structures. I say historical because this guide just happens to be that way. There are significant gaps in the presentation of important modern buildings, which probably reflects the artistic preferences of the editors. So, this is a book for architectural historians, curious tourists and general readers. The entries are many, so the words included with each are few. Readers are not treated to long narrative histories of imporant landmarks but, rather, to a book which is exceptionally wide and quite shallow. This is what one expects from AIA Guides, so there should be no surprises. Buy this book to take New York's lovely historical architecture with you wherever you go. And by all means, go to see it!
Latest edition is 2000, so World Trade Center towers are included.
Keep it close.......2004-03-15
I have been a New Yorker all my life and thought I'd known it all. There were buildings/structures that I knew to be older than most and probably landmarks, but never got around to checking them out. Then I picked up the AIA Guide to New York City sometime in 2001. Ever since, I have kept it with me at all times: in my back pocket, my briefcase, my jacket... Sometimes I go to some of these places in advance, with the intent of looking at them after I'd read about them. Other times, when on my way to or from work or lunch, I will see a building, stop, and look to read about what it is. My hunches aren't always correct, of course: not all the buildings I think are landmarks are. But I always keep this Guide on hand to find out.

Book Description
What does the future have in store? Blackouts? Lightning storms? Mob riots? Shark attack? Count on legendary survival expert Tony Greenbank to show how to prevail through anything the world throws at us with his newly revised The Book of Survival: The Original Guide to Staying Alive in the City, the Suburbs and the Wild Lands Beyond.
First published in 1968, revised The Book of Survival took the public imagination by storm. Now it is revised and back in print, with special advice on how to handle the unfortunate possibilities of the world we live in now.
Highly original, wildly provocative, often outrageously funny, The Book of Survival explores every danger life can hit you with, and then some. Whether it's falling elevators, head-on car crashes, crazed mobs, wolf attacks, terrorist bombings, or ATM muggings, Tony Greenbank provides a way out in his own clever and unique style.
Tony Greenbank's words of wisdom cut through like a knife: Too Lonely... "Anyone facing extinction feels the loneliest person on earth..." Too Thirsty... "Owed water the body is a debt collector ruthless enough to force its demented owner to drink gasoline..." Too Dark... "What do you do when the light goes out? How do you grope, paw, feel, claw, fumble and stumble out of the darkness?" Too Hot... "Intense heat can spark off a human urge to leap from impossible heights, fling open doors of burning rooms, hurl water onto flaming oiland make other errors."
When faced with impossible situations, survival is not a joke. One needs reliable, time-tested information. Man-made and natural disasters are common in our dangerous world. Accidents happen every day. One needs to know what to do. Greenbank reminds us that one doesn't need to be James Bond to survive the worst case scenario. The Book of Survival takes it for granted that someone may be overweight, out of shape, maybe even pregnant, and then gives easy-to-remember tips for surviving every imaginable catastrophe this menacing world can produce.
The Third Revised Edition includes updated information for our turbulent times, including advice on:
Preparing for biological and chemical warfare
Dirty bombs
Electrical blackouts
Child abductors
Escaping from high-rise towers in an emergency
Customer Reviews:
Solid information; very broad yet not horribly in-depth.......2005-10-16
This is a holistic, albeit somewhat sparse book that covers all aspects of self-defense and survival. That's a broad statement but it reall does cover everything from becoming lost in the woods to surviving a riot to defending against a physical attack to surviving in a blazing desert or frosty snowfield to surviving an automobile accident to avoiding child abductions and more. In the wake of 9/11, this new edition adds information about bio terror, dirty bombs and even escaping from high-rise towers. Even if you own a previous edition the new features are well worth buying a newer copy.
Contents are grouped into chapters: Too Lonely, Too Crowded, Too Dry, Too Wet, Too Bright, Too Dark, Too Cold, Too Hot, Too Low, Too High, Too Fast, Too Slow, Too Full, and Too Empty. It's mnemonically written for easy memory retention. Because it covers so many subjects each one gets only a few short paragraphs at most yet these cover all the critical survival aspects of every scenario. I highly recommend reading this book though I also highly recommend purchasing complementary texts to flesh out areas which most affect you and your individual situation. Despite the outstanding content I just don't feel that it is complete enough all by itself. Strongly recommended regardless.

Author of Surviving Armed Assaults, The Way of Kata, and Martial Arts Instruction
Staying alive whether in an urban or outdoors situation.......2004-01-09
Now in its third revised edition, The Book Of Survival: The Original Guide To Staying Alive In The City, The Suburbs And The Wild Lands Beyond by urban and wilderness survival expert Anthony Greenbank is a practical, no-nonsense instruction manual to staying safe and alive whether in an urban or outdoors situation. From defending oneself against physical attack; to avoiding frostbite; to surviving a head-on car crash; and with newly added information concerning biological warfare, electrical blackouts, dirty bombs, child abductors, escaping from high-rise towers, and more, The Book Of Survival is eminently readable and a critically important informational resource recommended for both personal reading lists and community library reference collections.
Worth A Spot In Your Library.......2002-01-02
note that the Anthony Greenbank paperback has 267 pages (for my pre-Sept 11 revised edition), not the 224 Amazon attributes to it.
Ever since I started selling books on survival, I have had requests from people asking for Anthony Greenbank's book, long out of print, The Book Of Survival.
Well, it's back. This new revised edition (revised again post-Sept.11) contains new tips on BASIC TERROR TACTICS SURVIVAL, CHEMICAL WEAPONS, BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS which have added since the attacks on New York and Washington.
The book contains a wealth of common sense advice - and quite a few tips that seem to come from left field, but make sense - and has some good illustrations which make ground-to-air communications, for instance, very easy to understand.
Chapters are: too lonely; too crowded; too dry; too wet; too bright; too dark; too cold; too hot; too low; too high; too fast; too slow; too full; too empty - all are written using a technique called mnemonics, which is supposed to help the reader retain or recall what has been read.
What stopped this book getting 5 stars though, is the writing, which I found a little 'odd' in parts. At the very beginning of the book I was put off by such statements as, "flaming electric blanket murders family"... an inanimate object 'murdering'??? I know it's not much, but it grated. At various stages I found myself wondering whether the book had been badly translated into english!
That aside, the book is worth a look. It covers every contingency imaginable and it does contain some great ideas that will help you stay out of, or get out of trouble.
Survival.......2001-07-19
This book is fun and full of fascinating things. I began reading it in New York City and finished it in the Scottish Highlands. In both places there was lots of information here to equip me in the case of emergency. In fact it's hard to think of any place or eventuality which this book doesn't cover. The next time I'm trapped in a car underwater, I'll know what to do. Sorry the reviewer from Hollywood didn't like it. Maybe he's upset at the lack of survival advice for unemployed actors.
This book saved my life.......2001-07-17
Following the advice in this book, which I read years ago when it first came out, saved my life. The book is well-organized for quick recall in an emergency: sections are titled "too fast" (car crash, plane crash, etc.), "too dry" (desert), etc. That's what you're thinking when you're in trouble!

Book Description
For beautiful Morgan Wakefield, that land lay west of the bluegrass splendors of her Kentucky home . . . and within the powerful embrace of Seth Colter—the handsome rancher with whom she had struck a bargain that would change her life.
Beneath the star-studded New Mexico skies Colter awakened in Morgan a woman's passion, stoking the sensuous fires of a bold, tempestuous romance. Though fate would make them enemies, theirs was a love that would endure, never to be forsaken.
Customer Reviews:
ooh la la.......2007-06-27
This was my second foray into the world of Jude Deveraux...yes, I am a little late in finding this wonderful author. My first was The Black Lyon which I loved but found waytooshort! But on to Seth and Morgan...I loved their connection from the beginning when they met at the party to the end...can't put that in here though:). My only complaint is as usual, too few scenes between the main characters...especially those you feel need more because they are so awesome together. Why oh why so much time elapsed? Well, I guess because back then, you didn't get far fast in a horse and buggy! BUT aside from my desire for more of this wonderful couple, I loved the storyline...loved the honesty of "most" of the characters and fell in love with the Old West and "Ranch Life"...Seth is by far, a truly captivating leading man when he lets his feelings out and Morgan is stunning in her desire for true simplicity. A must read and one I almost read cover to cover immediately after finishing as I did not want to let the characters go.
Linda
My introduction to the wonderful world of Jude Deveraux.......2006-01-01
This was the first romance book I ever read. I fell in love with Seth and Morgan. Over the years I have reread this many times, so much so that I had to buy a second copy because I wore out the first one.
I was never bored with this book even when I was reading it for the 5th time in as many years. I never stopped cheering for Morgan and Seth to get on the same page and realize that they were meant to be together.
I will agree that Jude Deveraux's style has eveolved over the years but I think this is an excellent read that is well worth your time.
HMMMMM.......2004-07-13
I am giving it 4 stars because any book that grabs a reader, even if it is annoying, is a well written book. It is not one of Jude's best, but it is an early book. She definitely improves as an author!
I am almost done with this book (I put it away and started another but had to go back). I think that says it all. It is a book you cannot walk away from without finishing - In spite of the fact that you want to SCREAM through-out the story! Seth is an IDIOT and I must say Morgan is too. One thing about this story that is unbelievable is that Seth could love Morgan as much as he says he does and then completely disbelieve her just because a man HE HATES claims she cheated. And then everything Morgan is subjected to because Seth does not believe her and she still takes him back. I am assuming she will, they always do. Even though it seems unbelievable, the characters seem real (not their actions maybe). They are well written in that you feel their anger, happiness, etc. It is kind of like a movie with a bad script but your favorite actors are in it and you want to watch them. I must go and finish this because I can't seem to walk away!
Complex love story with twists........2003-12-29
Morgan is raised by her mother in the East, abandoned (so she thinks) by her father in New Mexico as a child. Her mother is a puritanical man hating snob and raises morgan to believe that they are worthless, hurtful...and to make matters worse that she is homely and no man would want her anyway. The book begins with Morgans need to find a husband to save her inheritance from her father! She proposes $25,000 to a stranger, seth colter, if he will marry her and live in new mexico with her for one yr and then get an annulment. Seth agrees. Their relationship has problems but eventually starts to flourish. However Seth is a very hot headed, jealous man. He finds Joanquin, a rancher neighbor, kissing Morgan and leaves her alone at a party. Joanquin, a not nice man, kidnaps Morgan on the way home. Her forces her to write a note to Seth saying she has run away with her "lover". When Seth finds her, Joaquin "kills" him and sells Morgan to a white slaver. All the nastiness of that situation ends in Morgan being sold to a brothel and being put into a private auction. However, Seth recovers from his nearly mortal head wound and winds up in california and finds morgan. He makes loves to her, calls her a whore and leaves her devestated. (Unbeknownst to Seth, Morgan has escaped any sexual encounters with the bad guys.) Morgan becomes pregnant from her night with Seth and returns to new mexico to have her child. Seth pans for gold for 2 yrs until he finds out the truth about Morgan and returns home looking for her. Morgan has had a wonderful little boy and is happy living with her cousin Gordon, who is falling in love with her. Seth pretends to be Dave Blake and takes on a foreman job for Gordon to be near Morgan and his new found son. Seth and Morgan are on the verge on reconciling when little
Adam gets deathly ill and nearly dies. Together they fight for his life. Morgan gets so obsessed with little Adam that she shuts out life around her so seth "kidnaps" her to bring her into a healthier existence. And they do finally reconcile. This bk has many likeable characters, certainly several storylines and is quite entertaining. On the downside Morgan never quite captured me. I thought she was immature and bratty quite often. The bk referred to her need for a strong man to tell her what to do....duh...!! apparently because she had been so dominated by her mother as a child. The other thing I didn't like is the finale kidnap scene. After what she'd been through with bad guys, kidnapping her and scaring her half to death wasn't the loving way to get her attention. Overall, it was a different plotline and good read.
Not her usual, but it sure draws you in!.......2002-10-01
This book was written in a different style than Jude's other novels, being that is was written early in her career (1978). I didn't think I was going to like it at first just because it took me 50 or so pages to really get into it. This may have been because it was the type of plot that I am not used to with Jude. Although the different writing style actually became very refreshing to me the further I read.
I found myself falling in love with the characters as they grew more complex and deep throughout the book. By the time the book ended, I was very disappointed that it was over and wanted to know how their lives were continuing. A sequel to this book would actually make me very happy. :-)
What I didn't like was the large amount of time they were apart in this book. I couldn't stop turning pages just to see when they would be together again. What I enjoy most about a good romance is the ongoing relationship leading up to falling in love... and I like them to be together dealing with their feelings. Of course a small separation makes it interesting, but not one of 2 or more years when they also happen to hate each other. I do admit that their reunion was all the more sweet because of that looong separation and the tenderness between Seth and his son when he discovered Adam was his was so special.
Definetely A+ for the ... chemistry and true love that oozes from this book. And great plot throughout! Though not classic Jude, its a great read and one that keeps you thinking about the characters long after the story is over.

Book Description
Why on earth would I want to spend a year living in the 'evil empire?" Primarily, I went to Russia for a reason you may find hard to believe. My pursuit of alternative treatments that heal was increasingly frustrated by our American medical "system." I was amazed to realize that physicians in other parts of the world -- even in Russia -- are freer to practice, research, and learn than right here in the sweet land of liberty.
