Customer Reviews:
Nice collection of viking designs.......2005-09-16
A fair, but not terribly comprehensive collection (but then maybe I'm just spoiled by George Bain's "Celtic Art: The Methods Of Construction," which IS terribly comprehensive). All designs in this book are taken directly from viking artifacts, but drawn in bold black line drawings for easy tracing, copying, or whatever else you want to use them for.
I nice addition to my celtic/nordic art library.
Terrible waste of time and money.......2005-05-30
Furiously disappointed with this book, the contents of which are basically 44 pictures in black and white (and not greyscale, but solid black, and the white of the paper) of typical scandinavian patterns. There are 4 pages at the front talking of the history in general but nothing specific for each of the pictures.
The purpose of this book seems to be for people to transfer the images onto something else (by tracing etc..) but really, there is little substance to it, and you could find better pictures with a simple google search.
This book would have been far better with detailed explanations of the diagrams, their origins, photos of originals and greyscale, or dare I ask, colour. A great opportunity missed by the author. As it stands, it is worth approximately $2.00 only, with free postage.
A vastly superior work is "the Dragon and the Griffin" which is a 160 page book that details the elements of the designs and the progress through time.
I hate to have posted such a negative review but wish to save people the waste of time and money I endured due to the other favorable reviews, which I suspect were friends of the author.
A unique and welcome contribution .......2005-04-10
The Nordic folk of Scandinavia were noted throughout Europe for their love of embellishment with respect to their boats, door posts, weapons, jewelry, and other accouterments of the Viking lifestyle and culture. Fabled animal and bird forms were among the favored types of decorative motifs, appearing in highly stylized, easily recognized imagery which was gradually incorporated into Celtic art styles as well. In Ancient Scandinavian Designs, Bev Ulsrud Van Berkom has gathered together an arrangements of designs drawn from surviving artifacts of Scandinavian culture from the 7th to the 12th centuries A.D., making it a unique and welcome contribution to personal, professional, art school, and academic library Scandinavian Art & Cultural History collections. Also very highly recommended art design titles from the Stemmer House Publishers "International Design Library" collections are: Rebecca Mckillip's Celtic Designs (0916144755, $6.95); Frances M. Bradbury's Faience Designs (0880450568, $5.95); and Silvia Crockett's Angels In Traditional Design (0880-45086X, $5.95).
excellant source.......2000-04-02
This book is an excellant source for Scandinavian designs, usefull for art work and illistration. But I found it did not meet my needs for stenciling and interior designs. Great for Rose mauling techniques.

detailed.......2007-03-10
This book was very useful. It give good detail on how to do engraving. My favorite part though was the fact that it covers in detail, care and sharpening of the tools used

Too Old.......2007-07-14
The book is a bit outdated. I should have checked the copyright dates. My fault. Shame on me. It's like trying to repair a computer using Windows 3.1 Thats pretty far back.
Heal the Jewelry.......2007-01-10
He teaches you in plain easy to understand language. He gives lots of tips to help you. He gives good illustrations to help you. And he explains things well. I'm glad to have bought this book.
Another Dover reprint that is a good idea.......2006-04-12
This is abother one of those times classics that has been updated. With the newer information. I have a 1st Edition this vesion has 130 pages added checking the index with updated info. This is not for the Beader,Newbie or Wire Twister. It will not add much to their enjoyment of their chosen field. If they are looking to expand their knowledge of the metalsmithing field this would be a low cost way to cover a lot of ground for a small price and might find themselves with a ready reference. I own the first edition I use it and will be looking for the dover reprint.
A Hobby Beader's Opinion.......2006-03-21
Very good for professionals in the jewelry-making business.
Not necessary or applicable for the non-professional beader or wire jewelry maker.
An Excellent First Book On The Subject!.......2002-09-09
I wanted to understand the basics of what goes into
jewelry repair and creation. Can I resize my own
rings? Can I set my own stones? What simple
maintenance can I do instead of having to pay
big bucks to a professional, it just can't be
that hard!
This book proved me right. It's a wonderful
reference and text. It's not too much, it's not
too little, it's not too technical. Jewelers
tools are shown and explained. If you want
to build a jewelry repair set up in your home
this will show you how to make one that's just
right for you.
Someone said it's "dated", which I would rephrase
by saying it's a good, time tested and true basic
source of reliable up to date information. The
tricks they use out there and charge top dollar
for amazed me. I'm a smarter shopper now too.
If you want one book on the subject, this really
is a great choice.

Information Delivered with Arrogance.......2002-06-01
This book has many typos and incorrect descriptions. It's disheartening to see such a half...attempt at writing. Especially, one that has the Macromedia logo on it. They have the right idea, but they need a MORE QUALIFIED AUTHOR.
Not for beginners.......2002-05-14
I am quite familiar with other Macromedia products such as Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Luckily that experience helped me get through some of the lessons in this book. I am teacher who teaches teachers how to design web pages, and because of my experience with total beginners I know this book is ABSOLUTELY NOT for beginners.
There is too much assumption that people will know how to do things or where to find object, palettes or whatever is necessary for the lesson. At the end of the lessons we are told what we have learned but there is no rhyme or reason to it because there is no explanation of WHY we have learned it, and how it will be useful in the future. Finally, at the end of each chapter you save a half done movie that you never get to work on again in the book. Instead in the successive lesson you open up one in which many changes have been made, which you don't understand since you are not the one who made it and with which you are not familiar. So you begin each successive lesson with something kind of familiar, but not really, making it even harder for beginners.
I expected more out of book published by Macromedia for Macromedia.
Great tutorial.......2002-01-30
After trying and returning a couple of other Flash books I bought the Training from the Source book and loved it right from the start. I do have a problem in lesson three and am looking for an eratta on the book if there is one. I found one typo so far that makes lesson 2 look funny. (Pg 58 #7 the Height and Width are reversed.)
In lesson 3 I can't find the Neptune Logo Symbol in the common library.
Too concise for beginners.......2001-10-27
After following word for word each instruction in the book, as I reached the half-way point I realized that I really hadn't learned enough to make my own Flash movies without constantly going back to the book as a reference. Indeed, I did in fact make the Flash movies provided as learning examples in the lessons.......but at the expense of having to almost constantly stop and figure out what it was I was doing for explanations were brief. I understand that many of the graphics were already created to save me time, but when most of an entire site was completed for me already.......it just seems that I now know bits and pieces of information about Flash but not enough to feel like I've got a handle on the program. The book does, however, cover many advanced topics that I may choose to learn in the future. However, I think this book should have been 150 pages longer to better explain itself and also to help the user develop a better feel for the program before moving on to more advanced lessons.
I'm using it as a textbook.......2001-08-22
This book is a really great introduction to Macromedia Flash 5. It is so good, that I'm actually using it as a text book for a class on Flash I am teaching.
The amount of information jammed into this tiny book is very impressive. The author simplifies very complex topics and makes it very easy for people with no or little Flash experience to learn a great deal about the program very quickly.
I highly recommend this book. Last semester, I had to require two books to get the same information that this one is providing. It is just excellent, anyone saying otherwise is just crazy.

Saten Would Be Proud.......2003-06-21
As a Christian American, I felt it was my duty to write this review and save the Children of Amrica from this foul Tongue of Saten. For surely, as God In His Most High Made Little Green Apples, the Finger of Saten is Alive and At Work in this Book. As we read in Jedediah 14:28-29, "For God Thy Most Holy Gaveth Thee A Thumb, and not for Going In Thy Nose Did God Give Thee A Thumb, but for Thumbing Through His Most Holy works... For If The Lord Jesus had Wanted His Lambs to read Flip Books he would have given his Most Blessed Lambs An Extra Thumb, with a Sort of Bridgework attachment, foreth to make his children do so that much easier."
There's more but I must tell you that All Good Christians Should buy this book so as to make it easier to burn, and having done that, they should buy another, and burn it too. And then, having done this 666 times, those children of the lord should take those ashes and use them to line a catbox. And after the cat has done his most-righteous duty on those ashes, they should be taken out and sodden in the country in a green meadow where the boiled bones of mice should be scattered with them to the four winds, as it directs in Ebeneezer 14:2-6. Forsooth, it so sayeth the lord. May Gourd Bless.

Book Description
A spirit of adventure, a great sense of fun, an observant eye, and enthusiasm for everything new--that's the kind of woman Monica Hopkins was, and that's what led her to leave the comforts of her English family home in 1909 to homestead on the prairies.
Hopkins was a young bride who had finally married her childhood sweetheart, an Irish lad who'd wandered the world, then settled down to the life of a rancher in the foothills of Alberta. Through her eyes we get a unique view of the early days of Western Canada, that of an observant woman who took note of every detail of landscape and personality. Her letters sparkle with delights, enthusiasms, occasional troubles and tragedies.
In Letters from a Lady Rancher, Monica Hopkins brings to life the experiences of the women--and men--who settled the Canadian West.
This edition replaces the Goodread title, ISBN 0-88780-115-3.
Customer Reviews:
Historical - and hysterical!.......2004-05-04
A friend of a friend sent this book to a group of us living overseas, and while Monica Hopkins lived her adventures nearly 100years ago, we agree that she could be describing our daily life here. Writing to a friend on the other side of the globe, Hopkins details daily life in the "wilds" of Alberta at the turn of the last century, sharing personal anecdotes about her first year of marriage and interesting characters with whom she lives and works.
I highly recommend this title to anyone interested in Canadian history, particularly from a woman's point of view; to anyone living in a new and different culture/ lifestyle than the one to which they are accustomed; and to anyone interested in anecdotal, humorous history. The history of the West will never look the same!
