Book Description

Imagine yourself painting with no hesitations, no conflicts. Your brush dips into pots of vibrantly colored paint; inner inspiration guides your hand into lines and shapes that find their perfect places on the paper . . .

Welcome! I'm Aviva Gold, your guide to the magic source. As children, all of us lived and painted intuitively. And as adults we can re-create the boundless joy of unselfconscious art by setting aside intellectual critique and self-doubt and reconnecting with the source. Remember standing at an easel as a child and painting in a trancelike state of wonder? Somewhere along the line this freedom gets trained out of us, and we are either categorized as artists or not.

Paint and remember! Return to the easel with the same childlike sense of play. My program is not about regimentation. Learn to let go of inhibitions, relinquish control, and embrace the source. Using simple materials--tempera paints, newsprint--paint without worrying about the end product.

Just let go, and begin! Every human being is an artist. In Bali, one word means both "human" and "artist." Just show up and face a blank piece of paper. Tap into the source. Revitalize! Transform! Now, imagine yourself painting . . .

3 out of 5 stars A lot of good-will, but............2003-12-17

This is a well-written book about painting with some good tips about experimenting and overcoming blocks...BUT,

The author takes 163 pages to write what she could have said in just 60 pages or less. There is a great deal of repetition and stretching of the same concept under different titles. The only redeeming point here being that the author is a good writer, so one does not emerge annoyed over reading the same things over and over again.

While the book is obviously written with sensitivity and good will, it does tend to oversimplify the process of overcoming blocks. Some examples are the tips given to inhibited participants, such as the suggestion to "make sounds" before the painting, bark, howl, scream, slither all over...such techniques are supposed to help exorcise the most insidious of demons and put everything back in place at the soul-front...

I think that the book exaggerates its claims by quite a stretch. The promise of a process of "inner liberation" in which all you have to do is find and press the right button belongs to fairy tales.

Besides, the premise (from the author's choice of examples) is that, if you dig deep enough in the image-well inside you, you'll find snakes, bugs, excrements, and the like, and that all those who were painting blue seas and flowers are putting on a mask etc..etc... The fact is, different people are going to find different images if they "dig inwards", some might actually long for colors like bright blues or even pink or WANT to paint rainbows without being told that that is proof they are still "resisting"...the impression suggested by the author's choice of stories is that, disturbing images are proof of having arrived at the right inner territory and anything placid looking is a cover-up...this is a very narrow perspective to a subject that, being that of awakening creative powers, should have been open-ended enough to allow for all possible discoveries at the end of the road...the experience of the brand of images the author and some of her workshop participants found cannot become the example of what qualifies as "touching the source"...

While I have no problem with images of tormented psyches, I just believe that different people have all sorts of ways of seeing and of expressing what they see, and that any book about painting should allow for that, and should not-while claiming it seeks to show the path to paint from within- decree that a certain line of images are proof of being there, while another as proof of being still way behind on the road to enlightenment...Once upon a time in the past, there were those ancient regimes of the "East block" in Europe, in which their painters were told to paint scenes and use only those colors that depicted "revolutionary optimism"...ironically, the "prescription to freedom" in this book brings that story to mind...The thing is, NO specific brand of images should be defined as sign of being on the path of inner-truth or that of self-deception, least of all, in the name of artistic freedom of expression!

Being "open" to what lies inside the source, means being also open that it may not always be gut-wrenching scenes,it means being open to surprise in ALL its colors...repeating over and over how certain types of images are signposts to the path to inner light can work like subliminal messages that make people move in the directions suggested to them, but, in this case, they won't necessarily be towards THEIR own source....

To be fair, there are some tips worth exploring and my advice is to pick and choose, and...well... if it would put you at ease to bark and roll in paint, well, why not? (But If THAT would do to exorcise your demons, I'd be most envious indeed....)

5 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for "Painter's Block".......2002-05-14

If you're a "blocked" painter or having trouble getting started, this is for you. What you need is this book, about $50 to spend on materials and a space to paint. You can event paint on a piece of paper stuck to a door (I did). Ms. Gold presents a comprehensive approach, it's hard to pick and choose the bits you like, but if you give yourself over to it, it will work. This is "unblocking by doing" what you read, not 'unblocking by reading'.

2 out of 5 stars interesting, but not realistic for most people.......2001-06-14

I enjoyed the author's enthusiasm for the idea of painting from the source, which I understand to be a form of spontaneous painting without a preconcieved notion. However, it is difficult for the average person without an art studio to follow the instructions for the large scale work that the author intends is good for the soul. I am sure the author's workshops that are mentioned quite frequently throughout the book are stimulating and are wonderful environments in which to do this work. But I found myself wishing I purchased a book with more practical strategies for how one can engage in painting for one's soul.

Also, there are color prints in the center of this book; I frankly found them frightening and not particularly inspirational. Art is not only about the ugly and less aesthetic, it is about tapping the beauty of the soul as well and bringing that forth through paint or whatever medium one chooses.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opener!.......1999-03-28

I thank Aviva Gold from the bottom of my heart! This book really helped me to reach in to my "inner artist," without worry of any needless techniques that often get in the way of expressing my full creativity. Viva Aviva! Write another book real soon!

5 out of 5 stars A journey that has no ending.......1998-12-29

Aviva is one of those wonderful people who is bound to discover all that there is for her to know in this life. Even more, she is willing to share those discoveries and to use them to encourage those who come into her circle to leap from hers to their own. True learning comes from sitting at the feet of those who have something to share, getting up and allowing creation to happen from that experience, and sharing it with someone else. Circles on circles on circles. Endless. Boundless. Inevitible. It is what life, and being fully alive, is all about. To life! To Aviva!

Using a digital camera, an electronic tripod, and digital imaging technology, photographer Nick Wood has developed a new way to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, placing the viewer in the center of dramatic 360º panoramas. In 360º Paris, the follow-up to 360º New York and 360º London, Wood uses this revolutionary process to shed new light on one of the world's most beautiful cities.

Including images of well-known landmarks seen with fresh eyes (Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées), as well as the singular and distinctive locales visitors love to discover (the home of Godiva chocolates, a market for exotic birds, the "Paris Plage" along the banks of the Seine), 360º Paris is the perfect souvenir of the City of Light. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all of the photographs as QuickTime movies. AUTHOR BIO: Nick Wood is a London-based photographer whose work spans a broad range of subjects, from portraiture to architecture. His particular fascination with 360º photography led to this series of books.

    4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2004-11-18

For 85% this book is breathtaking and fascinating. No doubt, it's a new look on usual things in Paris. Paris is my most favorite city in the world and I collect photo albums about it for a long time, thus I can assure you that it will be a good deal to buy it. Its weaknesses: there are usual things (though from unusual point of view, 15% of the book is devoted to some interiors of shops and bars(do you want to pay for product placement?, the disk is attached to this book, which includes some digital panoramas, included in the book (however, my Quick Time Player did not manage to find some files (most interesting I should admit) though it seems they are there).

In case you've forgotten, the most visited city in Europe is stunning. Paris 360° will help refresh your memory with oversized photos of the gold-dripping L'Opera, the serpentine streets of Montmartre, L'Arc de Triomphe with the city peeking through, the swanky Hotel de Ville with its riot of marble sculptures throwing a party atop, and of course the Eiffel Tower, full moon sulking behind it. In case your memory hasn't been fully jarred, this glossy volume has several panels that open out, giving big 360-degree views, including a night scene of boats gliding down the River Seine. And if you want to play a rousing guessing game of "What's this Parisian site," the hunt won't be ruined by captions--you have to look up explanations of photos in the back. While this book makes a grand addition to any coffee table, for the steep price you may wish it provided some sort of insight, or at least scatch-'n'-sniff strips. --Melissa Rossi

    Book Description

Paris 360 is the fourth in a series of large-scale photographic records of the great cities of the world, following New York, Venice, and Rome.  Each of these cities has unique appeal, Paris personifying sophisticated glamour in an unspoiled  and manageable city space.  The wide boulevards, well-tended gardens, and landmark buildings are not crowded by skyscrapers, and a continuing commitment to public works and interesting architectural projects creates an ever-changing civic personality.

The large format and pull-out panoramas of Paris 360 allowed the photographer Attilio Boccazzi-Varotto a series of broad canvases on which to capture the essence of this wonderful city.  Using his rotating camera, Boccazzi-Varotto took panoramic pictures of Paris's neighborhoods, great buildings, squares, and streets.  A list of the photographs' subjects reads like a must-see tour of Paris:  the Louvre, the palace Vendome, Le Marais, the Opera, the Hotel de Ville, Les Halles, the Pompidou Center, the place des Vosges, and more.  Some of the photographs have been taken from an unusual perspective to provide a fresh view of a familiar scene, like a street in Montmartre or the Eiffel Tower.  The time of the pictures is varied: The sparkling freshness of I.M. Pei's pyramids at the Louvre and the basilica of Sacre Coeur are shown by night, the Seine by the Ile de la Cite at twilight.  Each photograph is accompanied by an explanatory caption that identifies the landmarks pictured and gives some of their historical and artistic context.

Paris remains one of the most popular European destinations for American visitors, and this volume, an extravagant treasure, is a perfect memento to remember it by.

4 out of 5 stars Good but strange.......2001-11-02

Well, very unusual and interesting book. Unusual, because photos of Paris are given under different angles. Interesting, because...simply interesting to look at famous places sometimes at 360 degrees view.
However, this book has one disadvantage or may be I did not understand the idea of authors. At the end the book there are all photos in small size and black-white color (back pictures). But sometimes the pickup angles of back pictures do not agree with the same pictures in the book. For example, back picture is of 180 degree view, and real photo is 90 degree. Therefore, you feel that there is a flaw of the book. As for the rest, I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars This book paints a beautiful portrait of the city........2000-06-05

Even if you've never been to Paris, you'll still appreciate the photography in this book. If you have been there you'll also find that the book paints a beautiful portrait of the city. I bought a copy for my wife's birthday and she keeps it in the livingroom near our photo albums. We'll look at our own photos when we want to see how Paris was during the brief time that we were there, and we'll look at this book when we want to think of Paris at its dreamlike romantic best.

        Book Description

This heavily illustrated book examines the twenty-year period that saw the U.S. fleet shrink under the pressure of arms limitation treaties and government economy and then grow again to a world-class force. The authors trace the Navy's evolution from a fleet centered around slow battleships to one that deployed most of the warship types that proved so essential in World War II, including aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, battleships, and submarines. Both the older battleships and these newer ships are captured in stunning period photographs that have never before been published. An authoritative yet lively text explains how and why the newer ships and aircraft came to be.

Thomas Hone and Trent Hone describe how a Navy desperately short of funds and men nevertheless pioneered carrier aviation, shipboard electronics, code-breaking, and (with the Marines) amphibious warfare-elements that made America's later victory in the Pacific possible. Based on years of study of official Navy department records, their book presents a comprehensive view of the foundations of a navy that would become the world's largest and most formidable. At the same time, the heart of the book draws on memoirs, novels, and oral histories to reveal the work and the skills of sailors and officers that contributed to successes in World War II. From their service on such battleships as West Virginia to their efforts ashore to develop and procure the most effective aircraft, electronics, and ships, from their adventures on Yangtze River gunboats to carrier landings on the converted battle cruisers Saratoga and Lexington, the men are profiled along with their ships. This combination of popular history with archival history will appeal to a general audience of naval enthusiasts.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A solid and worthy read.......2006-11-04

Thomas and Trent Hone, the father and son authors of Battle Line: The United States Navy 1919-1939 tackled a very crucial period in USN history and did it very concisely and well. The between wars period is often overlooked or misunderstood. Literally there was a revolution taking place within the Navy that was driven by technology (the aircraft, carrier & submarine) as well as new missions (amphibious assualt). As with any change forced upon an institution, there is always reluctance and nay-sayers. The innovators that brought about reliable submarines, carrier task forces and aviation development in this pre-war period are the un-sung heroes that deserve recognition and our gratitude. Battle Line examines these trends and the people that took the lead in developing these capabilities that still serve us today in our modern Navy. I would recommend this book to all who are interested in 20th century history as well the arm chair military history buffs. My hat is off to these authors - BZ!

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Book on a Little Known Era.......2006-06-23

Note that this book covers the years between the end of World War I and beginning the buildup to World War II. Just to use aircraft as an example, the Navy ended WW I with fabric covered biplanes. And in 1938 the Navy issued a requirement to Vought for the F4U Corsair. In ships the changes were no less dramatic. The Plunger class submarines of World War I (Would you want to go to see in a boat with that name?) gave way to the Gato class which was first laid down in 1940.

Another phase during these years was the result of the Naval treaties that specified the number and tonnage of ships that could be built. This incidentally caused two battlecruisers under construction to be finished as the aircraft carriers Lexington and Saratoga which were not limited by the treaty.

This is a fascinating book about a time when budgets were minimal, technology was rapidly changing, and although they didn't know it, the Navy was getting ready for World War II.

              Book Description

Three of Norman Bethune's close Montreal friends and associates from the Thirties collaborated to write this informal portrait of Bethune during a critical and fascinating period of his life.

Soon after Bethune's 1928 return from the United States to Canada, Montreal fell into the grip of the Depression. His research soon showed a correlation between worsening economic conditions and an increase in the number of tuberculosis victims in the city. Like many other intellectuals and professionals, he was drawn towards the political left as he tried to understand the basis for the economic crisis. These experiences led him to Russia, to Spain and finally to China, each journey strengthening his growing political convictions.

The authors of Bethune: The Montreal Years were all involved with Norman Bethune and his work during this period. Each provides a unique personal portrait of Bethune, his friends and his work, and together they convey their great affection and respect for this distinguished Canadian
