Must Read for Aspiring Architects.......2007-09-28
If your son or daughter is thinking, contemplating, dreaming, or planning on a career in architecture please buy this book for them and be sure they read it cover to cover. My son went to Catholic University's 3 week architecture camp this past summer and enjoyed a speech by Dr. Lee Waldrep, associate dean at neighboring University of Maryland's architecture school. After the speech Dr. Waldrep gave each attendee a copy of this book. Dr. Waldrep made quite an impression on my son as he announced after the camp that he also wanted to investigate Maryland, a school not initially on his college list. I saw the book at home and read it in two nights (295 pages). The book is laid out and presented in a way that offers "real world" insight, from noted architects, about the profession and what it takes to become an architect. This profession's "passion" really jumps out of each page as successful architects describe their education, interests, challenges, influences, etc. For me, the parent of a young aspiring architect, I felt very proud that my son has chosen such an interesting and respected profession. Well done Dr. Waldrep...and thank you!
Outstanding Career Source for Those New to the Field.......2007-09-17
If you are exploring design careers for the first time, this book is a must read! Waldrep skillfully coalesces insights from various faculty, students, and practitioners in order to provide a depth and breadth that is normally missing from typical career guides. There is advice on everything from the definition of architecture to establishing a design career, and everything in between; this advice cemented my intent to apply to a graduate program in architecture and urban planning.
I really loved the diversity of viewpoints expressed in the book. Modernists, neo-traditionalists, nontraditional students, traditional students, deans, and admissions professionals all have their own ideas about what attributes are necessary for a good architect, how to choose an academic program, and what employers look for. Finally, the text was so fun to read that I finished it the same day I received it and plan to read it again.
Very good information from a wide range of voices about architecture as a career.......2007-05-29
One of my daughters is very interested in becoming an architect and this is an ideal book for her. I think any young person of even an undergraduate college student considering this career path will find this book very helpful.
I appreciate that the book asks and answers the most likely questions a young person will ask or should ask about the career. Even more I appreciate that the author has brought in a broad range of practicing architects to answer than and share their views. This range of opinions and suggestions is quite helpful. It also has the benefit of being interesting.
There are five chapters, the first provides some definition of what an architect is by talking about the wide range of things architects do, and helps the prospective architect think through if such a career is for them. The important skills of architects are also discussed.
Chapter two talks about the education of an architect and even gets back into childhood toys, books and activities. For the high school student considering this career they suggest which courses are most beneficial for the student. They also discuss the licensing, paths to various degrees and what they are needed for. Appendix B also gives a list of accredited architecture programs. There is also information about the application programs and academic enrichment.
Chapter three talks about how to gain experience as a student, how to get noticed, what hiring companies look for, and moving towards licensure. Chapter four helps the student design her career and what the options are. Chapter five lets the participants in this book speak about their wide range of views of the future of architecture. Appendix A provides a resource list for architects - professional organizations, institutions, community service, recommended reading, and websites.
All great stuff, very readable, and with lots of interesting illustrations and photographs.
Very good!
Different from my expectation.......2007-01-16
I don't know. I expect this book to have more information than it is. There's not much content but too many interview. In fact the whole book is all about the interview from different people in different architecture backgrounds.
It may be a good book to those who want to knwo more about architecture, to architecture students who have never had internship before. Since I already worked for more than one year in architecture firms, I feel this book contains much less information than I expect.
Anyway, it's just my personal opinion. Hope it helps.
A beneficial resource for those interested, unsure, intrigued, or secure.......2006-11-19
A coffee table book; This is not a "cover-to-cover" read that teaches one how to become an architect. It does, however, provide a range of possibilities for the futures of aspiring architects. It is compiled of interviews with different professionals, preceded and concluded with resourceful information about schooling, exams, licenture, etc. It does present "answers" in a way, through examples of different paths and interests that lead to the varied careers in architecture. I would recommend this to students, in particular, who are considering an education/career in architecture: at moments while reading the book I felt insecure about my contrary approach to architecture; at other points while reading, I felt confident in the ability to relate my approach. It is reassuring to read the first-hand experiences of persons who are already at the point where I may be some day.

Teaching Pearl.......2003-10-22
I have used this book as a text for college students in Print Production classes during the past two academic years. I don't know what I'd use if this gem didn't exist! Its tone is intelligent, witty and practical, its content is right-on!
Further, the book itself is designed well. A prime example of "do what you say"--- form and function blend to delight the eye, hand and mind.
Well-written, attractive, but it's missing a lot.......2002-07-08
Well-written, physically beautiful, and without a lot of the information this DP tyro had hoped to find in a prepress handbook. I suspect that the writer has been in the biz so long that it's tough to put herself in the shoes of the beginner. So: nothing on PDF settings, little on trapping, nothing on bleeds, etc.
I'm new at all this. I had hoped to find that information in this book. I realize that all writers of technical manuals must decide what to include and what to omit -- Do you tell the reader how to install software? -- but I do think a handbook on prepress should have included much more than is included here. I learned nearly as much from the prepress section of about.com.
I recommend this book to people who don't need to read it: graphics professionals who will enjoy Sidles' smooth writing and amusing anecdotes. But if you want hard info, you'd better look elsewhere.
A must have for every graphic designer!!!.......2002-05-12
This is the most comprehensive work I've found on digital prepress yet! It clearly outlines every aspect of getting jobs printed from choosing the right papers that will be appropriate for your job, to running type over images, to knowing exactly how different types of digital press' work. It is the perfect book for all graphic design students as well as a bible for professionals wanting to know how the industry is changing, and how to avoid the hidden pitfalls that can ruin a job. Buy this book to aviod disasters on press.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, shame about the artwork!.......2002-03-18
As far as board books go, this is a very good one, however it says it's drawn by some of the best Japanese artists. I've seen Japanese art way better than what's in this book. Since I draw Mewtwo a lot, I noticed a lot of faults in the pictures of him. Some were even quite scary looking. I'd buy this book only if you are a true collector.
Beautiful books.......2001-10-17
This is such a nice set. They each have such orginal illustrations of the pokemon. I adore the beautiful art in these. It is always fun to play find the hidden pokemon as well.
I highly recommend this series
Book Description
Bangladesh is a destination for only the most battle-scarred traveller. Henry Kissenger's infamous 'basket case' label, just about the only PR about the country to have made it to the west, is not entirely unfounded, and it is against this backdrop that the auto biographical account Expatriate Games takes place. The narrative charts a fascinating and engrossing voyage of discovery. Through all the adversity the author's look at the country is both critical and sympathetic, any exasperation accompanied by a willingness to see people as individuals and swallow any distaste one might feel towards practices of which one disapproves, over and above the necessity to get along.

Slippery and Superficial.......2007-10-07
I won't say I'm sorry to read this book, but it was disappointing to me. I hoped for more detailed and heartfelt descriptions of the country, people, and culture. The most descriptive Mr. Trewnowden gets is about a cricket game he played which went on for quite a few pages (not being enamored of cricket I skipped most of this). Few, if any, of the positive aspects of the culture were mentioned. I think the author and his wife suffered from culture shock most of the time which may be why the book seems to simply glide along their experiences by mostly highlighting misadventures in their quest for alchohol and club-memberships which would entitle them to drink. Mr. Trenowden, at times, does have a funny turn of phrase. I chuckled when he described the "bone-laced biriyani" that he was offered after the cricket game and enjoyed his resourcefulness at avoiding a flight in order to get his visa towards the end of the book. I did learn of another book I could read and about the American School in Dhaka. But I did not feel as I had traveled to Bangadesh with him.
Did anyone even bother to edit this thing???.......2007-06-20
Having lived in Bangladesh for a while myself, I found this to be an amusing read. Bangladesh is like no place else I've been, not even India. There are just so many bizarre and quirky things about the culture (bizarre and quirky to someone from a Western background, that is), and Mr. Trenowden's stories highlight some of the funniest results.
On the other hand, I was somewhat offended by Trenowden's lack of cultural tolerance. Bangladesh is a very frustrating place to live if you go there expecting it to function like a Western country--but eventually you learn to appreciate the ways in which it differs frome the West, which, in many cases, can be very refreshing (the slower pace of life, for example). Trenowden, however, spends what feels like half the book complaning about the inadeqacy of the country's decorators/dry cleaners/architects, etc. He never gets into local cuisine, because he's convinced it will make him sick. Only at the end of his stay does he bother to try to get a glimpse into what life is like for the majority of Bangladeshis, and it's a brief glimpse at that.
His attitude throughout the book can basically be summed up as, "I want to be as isolated from Bangladesh as possible while still living in Bangladesh." So while his account is probably a pretty accurate portrayal of how the expatriate community lives, it's a horribly uninformed, inaccurate, biased, and ethnocentric view of the country as a whole. I'd urge anyone who is thinking about taking a posting in Bangladesh to read this book as an example of how NOT to go about your experience. Bangladesh is a fascinating place, full of the warmest people I've met in all of my travels; if you give it a chance on its own terms, you won't be disappointed.
(And in things not related to content: Did anyone even bother to edit this book??? It is absolutely swimming with mistakes--misplaced commas or, more often, a total lack of commas, or periods beginning new sentences where commas should be, etc., as well as some sloppy writing here and there. I'm talking multiple times per page. It's like someone just transcribed Trenowden's personal journal and sent it off to the printer. It was distracting, and I was a little frustrated that I'd spent actual money on this thing, when the publisher couldn't even be bothered to have an editor read it through once. But I digress.)

a fantastic and engaging tale.......2004-07-23
What would you be willing to compromise to survive in a strange new land? Forced by desperate circumstances the protagonists in the strong character driven novel, Expatriate Games, find themselves in Saudi Arabia; a land of wealth and promise for westerners leaving desperate economic difficulties. Like the prospectors in America that once braved the wild west to seek their fortunes and mine for gold, the westerners quickly learn that making money comes at a price - one they will all pay with their blood, their bodies, and their very souls.
In the west, we have a save the savage mentality when it comes to other cultures and religions. In Expatriate Games the reader discovers that the line between what is truly savage and what is sane begins to blur when Americans and Europeans are forced to live and survive in a dangerous society governed by a strict religion. Each move that a foreigner makes, each decision, is carefully scrutinized and any deviations from perceived religious tenets can mean death, dismemberment, or deportation. How the outsiders cope is both shocking, frightening, and incredibly realistic.
Intertwined with its intense political and social messages, carefully crafted medical tales of fame and folly pull readers deeper into the Saudi Hospital and its staff's lives. The trials of the nursing staff, the medical lingo, and the mishaps that occur, are truly moving and incredibly believable and authentic. Forget the drama of ER, the author's nursing background shines on the pages and clearly captures the real life drama of life in the medical field in a way that escapes even the best television shows.
Expatriate Games is a fantastic and engaging tale that had me riveted to the pages; my heart was pounding with fear. If you have ever wondered what it was like to live in a place ruled by a religious theocracy versus western democracy, this tale will terrify you. If you are a person of strong morals and religious convictions this book will leave you questioning the very fiber of the moral human fabric, and wondering - just what we are all capable of doing in order to survive and provide for those we love. Most of all you will be left wondering just who the good guys are and, more importantly, if the good guys exist at all.

Book Description
Expatriate Games describes the expatriate experience through the eyes of a culture-shocked young mother, as well as through the words and experiences of a cast of other young mothers who struggled to maintain some sense of identity while coping with the changes wrought by their husbands careers. When faced with her husband's job transfer to Orsay, France, the author struggled with learning a strange language, and navigating in unfamiliar surroundings, while trying to make a home for her family amid the puzzling characteristics of a different culture. The challenges did not confine themselves to France. Back in Michigan, the family's home and finances were damaged due to a misplaced trust in a disreputable property manager, a situation that threatened to plunge the family into financial ruin.
