A top-flight book of a complex subject.......2001-02-07
A truly comprehensive book, enjoyable to both read and look through. It covers the history and scope of air travel, including airport and aircraft design, corporate identities and marketing in a thorough, extensive and compelling manner. It is distinctive in how it successfully melds a global scope and a focused perspective.
Excellent.......1999-02-23
This book is an excellent overview of the history of civil aviation, terminals, and airfields. The attention to detail, both photographic and linguistic, is marvelous and provides a wonderful account of airport design. The faithfulness to the original traveling photo exhibit allows readers the opportunity to experience the cultural presentation alongside the historical reconstruction. All in all, a wonderful book for any aviation fan.
Building for Air Travel: A must have!.......1998-11-11
BfAT is one of the most intriguing books you'll find about airports. It covers a lot of airport design aspects- but it is not an engineering book. In other words, you won't have to face boring charts and graphs. All you get is interseting texts, divided into differnt issues, and many rare and beautiful pictures. If you really like airports- you should have this book.
Book Description
The airport terminal, the most important building type in the world of transportation, is also the site of the most ambitious and innovative achievements in 20th-century architecture. From the timber runway used during the Wright Brothers' first powered flight to modern glass-and-steel structures, from military buildings housing fighter planes to public spaces for both travel and shopping, airport architecture has evolved rapidly to meet the demands of a growing travel industry.
Now, in the first book to celebrate a century of airport design, noted architecture critic Hugh Pearman takes the reader on a journey through the history of these majestic beauties and predicts what the future has in store. Among the spectacular designs featured here are Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal in New York, Renzo Piano's Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan, and Norman Foster's Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong. With more than 300 photographs, drawings, and posters, this exquisite volume will have enormous appeal not only for architecture, engineering, and aviation professionals, but also for armchair travelers and design buffs fascinated by the sheer beauty of these architectural masterpieces. AUTHOR BIO: Hugh Pearman is the architecture, interiors, and design correspondent for The Sunday Times in London as well as a contributor to numerous other publications in Europe and America. He is the author of Contemporary World Architecture and Equilibrium: The Work of Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, among other books.
Book Description
Since its origins in the muddy fields of flying machines, the airport has arguably become one of the defining institutions of modern life. In Naked Airport, critic Alastair Gordon ranges from global geopolitics to action movies to the daily commute, showing how airports have changed our sense of time, distance, style, and even the way cities are built and business is done. Gordon introduces the people who shaped this place of sudden transition: pilots like Charles Lindberg, architects like Eero Saarinen, politicians like Fiorello La Guardia, and Hitler, who built Berlin's Tempelhof as a showcase for Fascist power. He describes the airport's futuristic contributions, such as credit cards, in the form of fly-now-pay-later schemes, and he charts its shift in popular perception, from glamorous to infuriating. Finally, he analyzes the airport's function in war and peace-its gatekeeper role controlling immigration, its appeal to revolutionaries since the hijackings of the 1960s, and its new frontline position in the struggle against terror. Compelling and accessible, Naked Airport is an original history of a long-neglected yet central creation of modern reality and imagination.

Portal to somewhere else.......2005-05-29
In its early years, air travel was a thrill for the rich. Today, it is boring, necessary and commonplace. Through well-written stories and narrative history, this easy read gives a history of air travel from the perspective of the architectural structures that support it. As our understanding of air travel has changed, airport architecture has changed as well. There is now more glass and more security, painfully long passageways, more roadway than runway and, of course, acres of parking. One thing has not changed: the airport has always been a portal to somewhere else. Airports are the waiting rooms of adventure and freedom. Naked Airport gives insight into the challenge of making these waiting rooms less purgatorial.
I share the opinion of the other reviewer who says that the last part of the book is not as strong as the first. For example, there is no discussion of important recent developments such e-ticket kiosks and wireless networks. Even with this shortcoming, I still recommend this one.
Naked Airport - Good Book.......2005-04-09
As an Architect, I found Mr. Gordon's book to be a very accessible read. This is not a coffee table book with glossy photographs and difficult to comprehend architectural theory. Instead he gives a very clear overview of the development of the airport building type, much like The Architecture of Diplomacy by Jane Loeffler does. He uses simple and tasteful photographs and graphics pared with a well written history. I would give this book a high mark and recommend it for both architects and non-architect. Thank you, Alastair Gordon for a nicely written book.

Airport Reverie.......2005-03-16
Alastair Gordon is at his best describing airport construction from the mid-1930s WPA era through the early 1960s. At one point, in fact, he says, "It would be nice to imagine a brief period, a golden moment, somewhere between say 1958 and 1963 ... when advanced technology and American-style marketing produced a perfect, jet-setting age of travel." Instead of devoting energy to a new preservationist movement for airports built during that period (for example, Saarinen's TWA terminal at JFK), Gordon bathes in reverie from this point of the book all the way to the end.
We are doomed to anonymous, repetitive styles in airports, he says, and promptly contradicts this assertion with descriptions of attempts to humanize airports constructed or refitted within the past five years. I can understand him being in love with airports of the late 50s and early 60s, since I am too. But this should not preclude his being fair with the newest efforts to make airports wonderful today. And some of these efforts are really impressive.
Be fair, Alastair! We keep flying; new passenger planes are more comfortable and more efficient (like the 777). Airports are improving, too. Don't lose your sense of wonder and leave your readers dehydrated...the best is yet to come.
A must for even the most expert traveler.......2005-01-04
Even for the most expert traveler, the Naked Airport will shed light on many facets of airports domestically and abroad. For instance, did you know that there are over 200 old bank safes in the landfill at Newark (EWR)? The history is layed out cronologically, but woven with social, political, economic and business history, such that it is any interesting narrative rather than a dry recitation of facts.
Alastair Gordon has done it again!.......2004-11-09
Through the pages of Naked Airport, Alastair Gordon examines the history of the world's most diverse structures. Going well beyond the architecture, this book explores airports in their historical and cultural context, defining well known edifices by identifying their place in the 20th century timeline.
I really enjoyed this book. Through a vivid and compelling narrative, Gordon manages to transport the reader to key points in time. Imagine attending the dedication of the New York Municipal Airport on October 15, 1939, where three skywriting planes circle overhead spelling out the words "NAME IT LA GUARDIA AIRPORT." The audience bursts into applause. Or picture being one of the first New York passengers in the early 1970s to walk through an electromagnetic gateway, a newly installed anti-terrorist device.
Naked Airport is perhaps the most comprehensive statement on airport architecture, history and culture to date. It is a must-read for history buffs and casual readers alike.

Product Description
The realisation of mankind's age-old dream of flight is probably one of the collective adventures that best characterises the century we have just left, its greatest novelty. In the space of only three or four generations aviation has conquered the entire planet and international airports have developed into sleepless cities. At the beginning of 1999, the European Commission sponsored an international project on aviation's architectural heritage, set up at the instigation of the French Ministry of Culture together with English Heritage and Landesdenkmalamt Berlin, the official heritage body of the German capital. The project's primary aim was to contribute to the better understanding and conservation of aviation architecture, focusing on three pilot-sites: Berlin-Tempelhof, Paris-Le Bourget and Liverpool-Speke - all rare survivors from the late 1930s.An international network of expertise on aviation architecture grew out of three international workshops, the proceedings of which are presented here. Through contributions from historians, architects, development agencies and airline companies, among others, the book examines how best to identify and preserve the sites worth keeping, the place of the airport in the 21st-century city, and the future of our historic airports.

Paul Andreu is well known for the more than 50 airports in Europe, Asia and Africa which he designed as head architect of the Aéroports de Paris, and for the Grande Arche de la Defense in Paris. The French Channel Tunnel terminal with the adjacent Cité Europe shopping centre is one of his recent European achievements. For several years Andreu has been increasingly active in the Far East, responsible not only for the airport of Shanghai and the Guangzhou Gymnasium, but also the Canton Sports Centre, the Osaka Maritime Museum and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre. In 2004 the Beijing Opera house, a futuristic dome in Tianarmen Square, will be opened, one of Andreu`s most spectacular projects and crowning achievements. The internationally renowned author Philip Jodido describes and documents the most influential stages of Andreu´s work.

Book Description
In watercolor paintings it is the masterful use of washes that creates depth, spontaneity and atmosphere. Joe Garcia provides clear, simple step-by-step instructions that teach the four basic washes: flat, gradated, wet-into-wet and streaked.
Painters will find plenty of guidelines and 33 demonstrations that combine these techniques to create light and shadow effects, as well as a variety of textures for popular subjects, including rocks, clouds and sand. They'll also learn how to develop unique textures and special effects using salt, a palette knife, masking fluid, sponges, dry brushes, spattering and lifting techniques.

Good for beginners.......2007-03-12
Good guide for begins only but it is a pretty book to have.
A real winner!!.......2006-09-08
This book is one of the best of its type. Instructions clear and detailed. By going through the exercises, you will be a better painter. This is a winner!! J. Drummond
Watercolor washes by a master.......2005-10-09
Comprehensive guide to watercolor washes which includes an excellent range of examples, mostly of landscape subjects. Garcia is a very accurate detailed draftsman and some of the exercises can be challenging because of the detail rather than the actual technique. The book is well produced and a useful reference for the beginner and intermediate student.
Watercolor washing.......2005-09-10
A really good book for beginners with some good tips for more advanced watercolorists. A valuable additon to any watercolor library.
A Very Useful Book......................2003-08-11
There are many books on watercolor techniques so why should you buy this one? You should buy this book because it an excellent reference book to help you learn the "nuts & bolts" of painting watercolors. As an example I refer to pages 44&45, "The Gradated Wash".Here artist Joe Garcia gives you a clear definition of the technique followed by very direct instructions and clear photos on how to proceed. He then gives you a tip at the end to get the best results. While this book seems at first glance to be more of an introduction to basic techniques more advanced artists will find this book to be very useful as a reference resource. The book like all North Light books is well designed with many photos and illustrations. When I first saw this book I figured do I really need this one? The answer is yes for the reasons I have mentioned. The author also explains his preference for materials and using watercolor boards which he makes himself. Now that it is available in a paperback edition there is no reason not to consider buying it.
Customer Reviews:
Not enough New Mexico, but pictures are nice.......2006-07-20
Mr. Knee lived from 1907 to 1982, 75 years , much of it in New Mexico. The first part of the book deals with a biography of the man, several pictures there, some are of/by him, but most have more to do with the several years he spent in California principally during the second World War.
The main section of the book has 81 plates (pictures) of photographs that he took during his main period of work in the 1930's and 40's and therein lies my complaint. The photographs are good, but only around half have anything to do with New Mexico. The others cover the American Southwest and even a few in Mexico, I wanted a book titled like this to be strictly New Mexico.

Inspiring, yet fun to read !.......2001-03-03
Since I've had the pleasure of meeting the author, I was impressed with her vivid descriptions of life on wheels. Her handicap of cerebral palsy presented her with many challenges, but not obstacles ... her faithful determination continually rises to the occasion ... yes, an inspiration to be your best ... yet keep a sense of humor.

--from "My Pony" by Ruth Feder
Joyous colts gallop through snowy fields. Mystical white horses canter in the moonlight. From the wonder of a new-born foal to the quiet grace of a beloved mare at pasture, horses capture our imagination like no other animal can. A celebration of horses in all their majesty, this collection of poems will inspire any young reader who has ridden a horse--or has dreamed of riding one.

Just about perfect.......2002-08-18
My 2 year old son is in love with horses. He and his grandfather read about horses and ride horses together. He loves to have any bed time story as long as it has a horse in it. He loves the pictures even though some of the horses are hard to see and the pictures are light. This book is perfect for him. He loves the poetry and sing-song of the words. He and his grandpa will spend hours reading this book.
