Ancient Chinese Architecture Series, Imperial Mausoleums and Tombs
Boyang Wang Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3211829911 |
Book Description
The underground mausoleums and tombs developed out of China’s longstanding practice of sacrificial rites and burial. Prior to the Zhou dynasty, simple enclosures were the rule, mounds followed in the Qin dynasty and by the Han dynasty, brick and stone structures had been widely adopted. These were in turn superseded by the magnificent palace-like imperial tombs of the Ming and Qing dynasties. All of the various architectural and ceremonial developments and styles are examined and illustrated in detail.

Ssu-ch'eng Liang Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0262121034 |
Book Description
Liang Ssu-ch'eng (1901-1972) was a pioneer in the scientific study of Chinese architectural history. He virtually created this field in China, and most of its current practitioners are his students. The book, which he wrote in English for a Western public and originally intended to publish in the 1940s, provides a rare record and analysis of temples, pagodas, tombs, bridges, and imperial palaces that are China's architectural heritage. It is a record that could not be duplicated today because a number of the structures have since been altered or demolished.

Visions: Palestine
Manufacturer: Kehrer Verlag ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3936636079 |
Book Description
The German photojournalist Andrea Kunzig, who has previously worked for Amnesty International, Misereor and UNICEF, witnessed Yassir Arafat crossing the border into the Gaza Strip after 30 years in exile. She decided to stay and ended up living in Jerusalem for three years, which provided her with a deeper insight into the way of life, the mentality of the people and their culture.
In her symbolic pictures, Kunzig sensitively captures the hopes and feelings of the Palestinian people between peace efforts and armed conflict. She shows us quite unusual images, far from those we're used to seeing in the daily news. Visions: Palestine presents an impressive selection of color photographs from a collection of over 1,000 pictures altogether.

Unfortunately, I have lived several years in an area that doesn't carry Drabble, so I have to get my Drabble fix through the internet or through great books such as this one.
When I feel down, I pick up one of my Drabble books and read a few stories. I can't help but get back up.

Americanism: New Perspectives on the History of an Ideal
Manufacturer: The University of North Carolina Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0807830100 |
Book Description
What is Americanism? The contributors to this volume recognize Americanism in all its complexity--as an ideology, an articulation of the nation's rightful place in the world, a set of traditions, a political language, and a cultural style imbued with political meaning. In response to the pervasive vision of Americanism as a battle cry or a smug assumption, this collection of essays stirs up new questions and debates that challenge us to rethink the model currently being exported, too often by force, to the rest of the world.Crafted by a cast of both rising and renowned intellectuals from three continents, the twelve essays in this volume are divided into two sections. The first group of essays addresses the understanding of Americanism within the United States over the past two centuries, from the early republic to the war in Iraq. The second section provides perspectives from around the world in an effort to make sense of how the national creed and its critics have shaped diplomacy, war, and global culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Approaching a controversial ideology as both scholars and citizens, many of the essayists call for a revival of the ideals of Americanism in a new progressive politics that can bring together an increasingly polarized and fragmented citizenry.

Henry R. Luce and the Rise of the American News Media
James L. Baughman Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0801867169 |
Book Description
In this concise biography of the twentieth century's most influential magazine publisher, James L. Baughman describes Henry R. Luce's career and assesses his lasting contributions to American journalism. In 1923, Luce founded Time, an innovative magazine that revolutionized the news media. He went on to start such magazines as Fortune, Life, and Sports Illustrated. Baughman challenges the widely held assumption that Luce wielded extraordinary political power through his publications. His real significance in American history, Baughman concludes, lay instead in his impact on the press. Even as new technologies transform journalism once again, Luce's legacy continues to influence how the news is reported and understood. In a new afterword, Baughman chronicles the history of Time Inc. since its mergers with Warner and AOL.

Henry R. Luce, Time, and the American Crusade in Asia
Robert E. Herzstein Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521543681 |
Book Description
This book shows how Henry Robinson Luce used his famous magazines to advance his interventionist agenda in Cold War China, Korea, Japan, and above all, Vietnam. This is the first balanced work on Luce and his influence, using hitherto undiscovered or inaccessible sources. Luce saw the American Century as the heir to the fading British Empire; he failed to see the hubris and cultural blindness that would lead to disaster in Vietnam - a disaster for which his magazines paved the way.
