Digital Ground is an architect's response to the design challenge posed by pervasive computing. One century into the electronic age, people have become accustomed to interacting indirectly, mediated through networks. But now as digital technology becomes invisibly embedded in everyday things, even more activities become mediated, and networks extend rather than replace architecture. The young field of interaction design reflects not only how people deal with machine interfaces but also how people deal with each other in situations where interactivity has become ambient. It shifts previously utilitarian digital design concerns to a cultural level, adding notions of premise, appropriateness, and appreciation.
Malcolm McCullough offers an account of the intersections of architecture and interaction design, arguing that the ubiquitous technology does not obviate the human need for place. His concept of "digital ground" expresses an alternative to anytime-anyplace sameness in computing; he shows that context not only shapes usability but ideally becomes the subject matter of interaction design and that "environmental knowing" is a process that technology may serve and not erode.
Drawing on arguments from architecture, psychology, software engineering, and geography, writing for practicing interaction designers, pervasive computing researchers, architects, and the general reader on digital culture, McCullough gives us a theory of place for interaction design. Part I, "Expectations," explores our technological predispositions -- many of which ("situated interactions") arise from our embodiment in architectural settings. Part II, "Technologies," discusses hardware, software, and applications, including embedded technology ("bashing the desktop"), and building technology genres around life situations. Part III, "Practices," argues for design as a liberal art, seeing interactivity as a cultural -- not only technological -- challenge and a practical notion of place as essential. Part IV, "Epilogue," acknowledges the epochal changes occurring today, and argues for the role of "digital ground" in the necessary adaptation.

The book digital ground presents new ideas about place and technology. I was particularly struck by the idea of technologies piling up at a place -an interesting problem is how this pile of technologies can be organized into a useful whole - device ecologies, and an extensible system (hardware and software) that can grow over time (and be subject to changes, e.g. devices removed, replaced, added,etc). Another interesting idea is how certain places fulfill or serve different aspects of life or functions, and the technology at a place should then be in accordance with the corresponding aspects of life or functions at that place, or at least be attuned to or be aware of context necessary for such functions and related activities. There are also other interesting ideas and underlying theories in the book which makes it an interesting read, and not only for architects and builders but computer scientists!
The future of interaction design.......2004-08-28
This book is a wonderful look at the background and future of interaction design. McCullough provides wonderful depth of understanding for the reader on the many discipline that support interaction design: psychology, architecture, cultural anthropology, technology. Not only does McCullough draw the disciplines together nicely, it is done seamlessly to the reader.
My copy is now filled with highlighter marks and it a book I will be returning to for my profession and through time. If you are a fan of well developed end notes to find further information, this book is a charm.

Not What I expected........2007-01-10
I am a fan of the "MAGIC" series. I was thoroughly impressed with the previous version that actually had some compelling content. There is nothing that special in this book. The tutorials are rather bland. I will keep looking for a good After Effects book that has some creative and more relevant content. I am usually pretty passive in my reviews but this book just didn't do it for me.

Version 5.5 of Adobe After Effects is much more than an incremental upgrade. By improving on existing features and introducing new ones, the After Effects development team has again created a must-have version for the professional After Effects designer. After Effects 5.5 Magic takes the intermediate to advanced user through a tutorial tour of some of these features, while reinforcing important older tools.
Featuring chapters written by such After Effects luminaries as Fred Lewis, Patrick Siemer, and Dan Ablan, to name a few, there are chapters on film resolution, logo animation, combining 2-D and 3-D layers, motion tracking, and several chapters on live-action compositing. The last third of the book is focused on one of After Effects' most powerful features: expressions. Since expressions are perceived as "programming," many AE designers tend to shy away from them. If you're new to After Effects, I could not recommend this book. Better to go with the After Effects Classroom in a Book.
If you are a self-starter and don't mind doing some investigating, then you may love this book. The reason I'm qualifying my praise is because I'm in the middle of it and I'm having some trouble making these projects work the way they claim to. This book is not an step-by-step, procedural kind of
tutorial. They give it to you in broad strokes, and also expect you to finish some of the projects by simply describing the last few steps in a single paragraph, so you have to backtrack and see what you've already covered, and apply it to the rest of the project.
It does teach some pretty cool things, and what you learn, you learn well, because it can be painful to figure some of these projects out. They don't hold your hand here.
At the end of each project are some brief paragraphs describing variations you can do. I expect to do these eventually. I believe in reading a book three times, so maybe by the time I've done that I'll have mastered it. They do seem to know what they're doing - and they also assume that you do.

Don't get this as a beginner's book - you'll be lost in the first example! Instead, think of this as fodder for your next work of art AFTER you have a handle on the basics. I got several great tips that created ideas that I was able to implement on my own. Great complement to the Trish & Chris Meyers AE books.
Magic is a good name.......2002-11-03
I have been using After Effects since before Adobe bought it. I thought I knew alot, until I read this book. New ideas and concepts on animation itself and even the new stuff with expressions and 3D. Great book if you are new or old to the program. Some parts are hard to read and I saw a few typing errors in the expressions chapters, but all in all, well worth the money. I highly recommend this book.
After Effects Magic Indeed!.......2002-07-22
After Effects 5.5 Magic is a great book for those of you who already have a minimal basis using Adobe's After Effects. This book has great step-by-step tutorials walking you through interesting and creative projects. The book was written collaboratively by well-established professionals that work with this program in the field. I also liked that this book tackled some easy to understand expression problems. I don't know how to write code, but the tutorials made it easy to understand relationships between layers and their properties with easy to understand java script.

Dear Ines, Dear Janet is a unique correspondence between two women-one British and one American-from totally different backgrounds who became friends and wrote to each other over a period of 50 years.
Janet Bookman was born to an immigrant Jewish family from Eastern Europe. Her father spoke mainly Yiddish, and her mother had little formal education. Janet grew up in the Bronx borough of New York City, found her way to Washington, married a news man and raised two children.
Her friend, Ines Burrows, came from the British upper class, descended from founders of The Times of London, and married a career diplomat who became Ambassador to Turkey and NATO, and represented Britain in the Persian Gulf. He was knighted for his work by the Queen.
The two women met in Washington soon after World War II, became close friends, and wrote to each other over half a century until Ines died in 1997. Naturally they wrote about family problems (each raised teenagers in the Sixties), but also about what was going on in the world-Vietnam, U.S. and British elections, the glamorous life led by Ines and events in Janet's more tranquil existence.
These letters give unusual insight into the lives of two very interesting and articulate women-and into the qualities that can make for friendship-over the years and over thousands of Trans-Atlantic miles.

I understand how Nowlan held office for forty years........1998-11-11
Conrad's book is not a political biography, but a history of politics in Nova Scotia and Canada. Accordingly one can learn about more than the life of George Nowlan, federal finance minister and long time member of parliament from the Annapolis Valley. Nowlan's son also represented the Nova Scotia riding but without his father's success or longevity. The details of local organization and party machinery are as interesting and revealing as the larger picture of Nowlan's part in national politics. Political history is shown to be a result and part of the social context.
