fantastic projects, poor details.......2003-06-05

very immportant issue indeed, but i would have thought that a more thorough text, with richer details on each project outlined will be more suitable. i mean this is't a fancy archi movement, it is an exploding concept, which deserved a more detailed book, each project leavs you so thirsty cause it wasn't covered enough and the aim of selecting them as examples of the title wasn't really clearly demonstrated, so at the end you are more woundering than satisfied. but why the 4 stars then? well, the outline, the fantastic photos, the projects themselves. i would really wish that the authors would come up with a part 2 or something.

I was disappointed with this book. It seems the author's desire for glossy photos overwhelmed the critical analysis and description of the passive technologies. Too often, I was enamoured with the photos, and left guessing about the method. The main subject of the book, eco-tech and high technology, are superficially described in the intro, and barely touched upon in the "case studies." Consequently this book becomes yet another photo-architecture book on the already overcrowded coffee table. This book does not do justice to the complexity of the passive systems used in the buildings it features and at best could serve as a pictoral supplement to other more descriptive texts.

although a few of the projects seem out of place, the layout,concise reviews and images are of the highest quality. foster,rogers and piano steal the show.there are some lesser known architects too, which give the book and the ''eco-tech'' movement a nice balance.splendid drawings by the architects as well, including a few early hand scetches.great book, great photography,great price.

This book has especially nice diagrams--it is very graphical--along with clear explanations. This makes the projects look easy and motivates you to try the things they show.

Las Batallas Del Desierto is a must read........1999-05-02

The book can be read in about an hour and a half, so it's really short. The storytelling in this short read, however, is magnificient. The histoire and recit is not complex at all, letting the reader immerse him/herself into the themes of the book. You'll fall in love with some of the characters, and Carlitos will probably remind you of yourself when you were a child.

This El Paso, Texas-born author has lived many years in the desert, attuned to the sounds of the desert in both English and Spanish. Her love of this part of the country is evident in this elegant story that consists of the repetitive sounds of the owl, the toad, the hiss of the snake, the coo of the dove and the call of the coyote. Fish, mice, rain and wind add to nature's subtle symphony, but none of these sounds would be quite as memorable without the marvelous illustrations of Francisco X Mora. The artist brings the desert to life in his marvelous depictions of the animals in their natural habitat, all of them part of the grand vistas of nature's palette. In Spanish and English, text and artwork merge in a book that is a joy to share with early readers, a great adventure and an introduction into the world of words and nature's bounty, learning the language of the desert, sound and image in perfect harmony. Great repetition and introduction to Spanish!.......2007-01-09

My 2 1/2 year old son received this book from his aunt. He immediately enjoyed the repetition and has begun reciting the English and Spanish phrases while giggling too. His reaction to this unique book has been a welcome surprise so I am now seeking more books like this.

What I liked from the book is that the author includes the bright flowers found in the desert, the tunas as a delicious fruit, the medical plants used from the natives such as chamomile, oregano and peppermint, the different weathers found in the desert. I have been in the desert, I have eaten tunas and other fruits found in the cactus and other desert plants. I think kids who like the typical green areas (woods and jungles) will also find in the desert a beautiful place to visit and enjoy.

This book deserves five stars. This is a beautiful, yet playful and exquisite poetic book, celebrating the richness of the desert written in both English and Spanish.

The verses are written in both Spanish and English by Pat Mora who also understands and loves both languages. For a classroom teacher, this book makes a perfect reader's theater for including both bilingual Spanish and English students and also creates a natural springboard for discussions of language, culture, and ecology. The beautiful illustrations support the text perfectly, giving important clues for readers to unlock the graceful language. If you are studying the desert, no matter what age, I highly recommend this book. If you are a parent who loves to read with your child this is a must have and if you are a bi-lingual Spanish-English parent, lucky is the child to have your two voices to bring this book to life.
