not a practical guide.......2007-08-17
This is not an easy reference guide, but a textbook that gives lots of information that is not needed for daily design use. It is also filled with lots of pictures which would be nice if they were really helpful, but they seem to take up a lot of space and act as fluff.
BroadBased Knowledge.......2007-05-13
Well-organized and informative general reference on textiles for home or commercial use. Also has a great references section. Pictures are helpful, but I'd also recommend having a "hands-on" source in order to get a better understanding of all of the terminology and descriptions.
Fabrics Guide by Marypaul Yates.......2007-03-09
A very nice book, quite in depth.
Covers natural and man made fibers, types of weaves, production and fabric finishes. Many color plate examples to illustrate the information.
This book was shipped quickly by Amason at half the price I paid at the campus bookstore! Needless to say, I returned the book purchased at the campus bookstore.
Fabrics textbook.......2007-01-05
book was in excellent condition, just as the seller specified! no torns, no highlights, no wear! arrived promptly!
Can't review a book I never received.......2006-03-09
I waited 6 weeks and Amazon never sent the book so I cancelled the order and gave up.
Customer Reviews:
This book needs help!.......2006-04-14
There is oodles of info in it, however, it is the absolute driest book I've ever had to read. I actually love the majority of my textbooks. As a design student, I expect a book to have nice color photos, beautiful layout and an organization that is more appealing. This book needs help! How about a graphic design professional to work the layout and photos, maybe pay a little extra for some color pages (it looks like it was printed on a copy machine as is) and maybe someone to edit the copy so it is more palatable and less tiring. When I know I need to catch some zzzzz's, I just open this book and try to read a few paragraphs.

Decorative folk painting is the art of applying figurative work or stylized decoration to functional everyday objects. Typically, such adornment takes the form of a fruit-and-flowers approach, but Folk Art Style extends the boundaries well beyond the traditional, offering 18 lovely projects ranging in style from hatboxes and screens inspired by medieval illumination and Elizabethan portraiture to art nouveau and art deco motifs on furniture, Edwardian and lacquerware-style trays, and a lidded wooden box painted à la Georgia O'Keefe. The introductory section provides extensive instructions on various decorative painting methods (stroke work, bold, and blended painting techniques), as well as solid groundwork on using color, preparation and finishing, pattern transfer, and practice exercises. "Folk art," says this talented author, "recognizes that everyone has latent talent," and her book bears stunning witness to her faith in this belief. --Amy Handy

Great comic by an incredible cartoonist! Loved it! I highly recommend checking him out! You'll be glad you did!
Spooner- the New Age comic strip.......2005-07-09
A strange remark, but true. Not only is Spooner very humorous, but it draws elements from the real world and other comic strips into its plot. Spooner and Roxanne, like most couples, are complete opposites,as Roxanne is a independent free-thinking woman while Spooner is a man naive about his new role as a caring family man, something that Roxanne constantly refers to. He looks at another women while he goes to a movie with Roxanne( for which he gets a black eye.), forgets certain things( such as a song he sang to Roxanne while dating.), burps loudly when Roxanne tries to ignite some romance, and makes bad remarks about his wife's cooking. While Spooner refuses to grow up into the ideal husband, Roxanne tries her best to mold Spooner, through Emotional Inventory and discussions about the future, when she will no longer be so beautiful. One of the clever things Mr. Dawson is to create Cal, a older man experienced in marital affairs who has had three wives, who provides some humorous commentary on the difficulties of marriage. Dawson looks at both the anxieties and perks that Spooner and Roxanne get from their union; Roxanne wants to start a family, but has to get her career off the ground while Spooner is pleased to have Roxanne for himself, but is annoyed by her refusal to dress sexy( In one strip, Spooner claims Roxanne was easy, which was why he married her. Spooner's parental potential is shown in several strips, although the strips end with a different conclusion than Roxanne or Spooner would expect; in one strip, after holding a little baby, Spooner is unnerved by a goggly-eyed Roxanne and the baby rattle and bottles he " sees. " above her head. The one limitation is that we know very little about Spooner and Roxanne's lives before they were married, although one strip suggests that they met in college, via the term " Went steady. " Spooner is a strip that infuses humor into any panel, even when a strip deals with something very serious like birth control. Some of the best strips in this book are " Image Strips. " where a certain image, seen or unseen, is formed by Spooner or Roxanne after which the other may think of a image of their own: While working in the backyard, Spooner and Roxanne conjure up contrasting images, Roxanne envisioning Spooner as a successful lawyer while Spooner envisions Roxanne as a Superheroine. One of the color strips has a image formed by the real world when Roxanne and Spooner go to a dance club, but sit quietly at a table. At home, however, they dance to their heart's content. I wish that this strip was still in print, as it is the most original strip I have read so far in this new decade.
Hilarious, humorus and honest..........2005-01-13
SPOONER is so real. That's the best thing I can think to say. While the funny gags and great illustrations are enough to give kids the giggles, the real humor is in the relationship between Spooner and Roxanne.
What comics should be.......2005-01-12
There isn't much in the way of laughs in the funny pages these days, but when Spooner ran, that was a different story. Now, you can have the original runs PLUS strips that never made the cut past the editors!
Great stuff for newlyweds and long time married couples alike.
Do yourself a favor and read this, you'll laugh the whole way through.
Romantic comedy at it's finest.......2005-01-11
If you enjoy reading a comic and then passing it to your signifagant other this comic is for you.
If you enjoy any of those Tom Hanks/ Meg Ryan movies this comic is for you
If you enjoy the show Mad About You, then this comic is for you.
Spooner is one of those rare comics that while you are reading it you feel as though you are looking into a mirror of your own life.
Highly Reccomended!!!

Book Description
Eva McDonald Valesh was one of the Progressive Era's foremost labor publicists. Challenging the narrow confines placed on women, Valesh became a successful investigative journalist, organizer, and public speaker for labor reform.
Valesh was a compatriot of the labor leaders of her day and the "right-hand man" of Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor. Events she covered during her colorful, unconventional reporting career included the Populist revolt, the Cuban crisis of the 1890s, and the 1910 Shirtwaistmakers' uprising. She was described as bright, even "comet-like," by her admirers, but her enemies saw her as "a pest" who took "all the benefit that her sex controls when in argument with a man."
Elizabeth Faue examines the pivotal events that transformed this outspoken daughter of a working-class Scots-Irish family into a national political figure, interweaving the study of one woman's fascinating life with insightful analysis of the changing character of American labor reform during the period from 1880 to 1920. In her journey through the worlds of labor, journalism, and politics, Faue lays bare the underside of social reform and reveals how front-line workers in labor's political culturereporters, investigators, and lecturersprovoked and informed American society by writing about social wrongs. Compelling, insightful, and at times humorous, Writing the Wrongs is a window on the Progressive Era, on social history and the new journalism, and on women's lives and the meanings of class and gender.

When this true-crime story first appeared in 1980, it made the New York Times bestseller list within weeks. Two decades later, it's being rereleased in conjunction with a film version produced by DreamWorks. In the space of five years, Frank Abagnale passed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in every state and 26 foreign countries. He did it by pioneering implausible and brazen scams, such as impersonating a Pan Am pilot (puddle jumping around the world in the cockpit, even taking over the controls). He also played the role of a pediatrician and faked his way into the position of temporary resident supervisor at a hospital in Georgia. Posing as a lawyer, he conned his way into a position in a state attorney general's office, and he taught a semester of college-level sociology with a purloined degree from Columbia University.
The kicker is, he was actually a teenage high school dropout. Now an authority on counterfeiting and secure documents, Abagnale tells of his years of impersonations, swindles, and felonies with humor and the kind of confidence that enabled him to pull off his poseur performances. "Modesty is not one of my virtues. At the time, virtue was not one of my virtues," he writes. In fact, he did it all for his overactive libido--he needed money and status to woo the girls. He also loved a challenge and the ego boost that came with playing important men. What's not disclosed in this highly engaging tale is that Abagnale was released from prison after five years on the condition that he help the government write fraud-prevention programs. So, if you're planning to pick up some tips from this highly detailed manifesto on paperhanging, be warned: this master has already foiled you. --Lesley Reed

Here is the uproarious, bestselling true story of the world's most sought-after con man -- the basis for the DreamWorks feature film.

Customer Reviews:
great pulp especially for a short plane trip! .......2007-09-27
"The parental drive Frank wants from Carl feels less evident, missing the sensitive looks and words as played in the movie by Hanks and DiCaprio."
don't you realize how silly it is to complain that stuff happens in the movie(fictional) and not in the book (factual).
Fun.......2007-07-18
This is a fun book. Abagnale's intelligence and wit come through, though the writing is a bit stilted and the material quite dated. But Abagnale's ability to exploit appearances and to exploit the level of trust necessary for society to work is fascinating and very funny. Perhaps his most interesting con is his relationship with women. This is the ultimate con game, I'm afraid, and the book would have been far better had he explained his con in this regard and had he come to terms with it. Also, the book ends quite abruptly and is unsatisfying in explaining how Abagnale ultimately came to terms with himself.
When you do get caught make something of it .......2007-06-29
We sat in the second row as we listened to Abagnale recount his escapades as a con artist. His regret of his actions has led him to a life focused on preventing others from following his footsteps. That prevention includes his own consulting agency, training FBI agents, and lecturing us on identity theft. The serious moment of identity theft silenced the audience showing that Abagnale had earned respect. What Kyle and I took from that speech, besides some great antidotes on how to get money from an ATM machine, was a renewed concern about the protection of our own identity. Take note that both the book and the movie are media-hyped versions of the true story. This doesn't take anything from the read but it does make the reader ask questions of probability. I love the fact that Abagnale (Doesn't his name just roll off the tongue?) is still good friends with the FBI agent, Joseph Shea, whom helped to capture him.
May be the greatest imposter in history.......2007-05-12
Frank Abignale is one of the most original and interesting characters of the century. By the time he was old enough to vote, he had been an airline pilot, lawyer, doctor and womanizer of the first magnitude. Well written and hard to put down.
Great book.......2007-03-09
This was a very fascinating and fun read but entirely different than the movie which I thoroughly enjoyed as well. That's why I bought the book. I would say the movie is very loosely based on this book. I highly recommend both to anybody who likes fun and wants a good laugh.
