A helpful hint in the right direction.......2000-05-27
As an Architecture Student, I really enjoyed this book. It was very helpful with sketching techniques and just general concepts related to architecture. It was a required text for a class, but it has been a helpful reasource since. I recommend this book to any person wishing to develop a good sketching technique. This book refrences very important works by Aalto and Wright. It also addresses important and helpful hints about abstraction of ideals and their graphic weight.
Very helpful book.......2000-03-30
As an interior design student I have found this book to be very informative and helpful. The step by step analysis of the design process is terrific and I've practically worn out the copy at the library, so it's time to buy it for myself.
Book Description
8 5/8 x 7 1/2 120 color and 30 black-and-white illustrations US Distribution only photography The author examines the world of nude photography and explains how the beauty of the human form can be recorded and even enhanced by camera artists of all levels. Detailed information includes sections on composition, lighting, studio shots, outdoor work, and the specific equipment to choose for each type of setting. Scintillating examples of nude photography are accompanied by clear and complete instructions for achieving equally compelling results
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre at best.......2004-05-31
If you're looking for in-depth advice on how to take better nudes, this is not the book for you. Setups are glossed over, photo's are average, and book production was terrible.
In the copy I received, around 15 pages were duplicated, and corresponding pages were missing.
Book Description
Mike Crawley's Photographing the Nude is a thoroughly practical and inspiring guide for photographers of all levels. It begins by teaching a number of basic skills key to developing a sound understanding of the art--nude photography shares many of the same technical problems as other areas of portraiture.
Crawley demonstrates a wide range of classic lighting techniques, from soft diffuse lighting for a romantic mood to direct lighting that emphasizes the contours and musculature of the body. Knowing what poses are good for figure work is also essential. To that end, specially commissioned photographic sequences demonstrate the dos and don'ts.
Readers will also find information on taking more creative shots such as semi-abstracts, and technical challenges such as infra-red prints and digital manipulations. Chapters on darkroom and digital know-how form the final invaluable section.
Mike Crawley is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. He exhibits his work in the UK and Europe, including the prestigious Austrian International Salon, and last year won the George Eastman medal in the Kodak International Salon of Photography.

A real disappointment.......2001-07-03
As an amateur photographer, interested in the black and white nude this was one of my first purchases. It was a real disappointment to say the least. The images in the book are technically well done but I continue to ask myself, "why are these people nude?" For me the images say nothing about the models nor does the interaction of shadow and highlight move me.
Interesting look at the human form via infrared film.......1999-05-04
This is a fairly traditional photgraphy instruction book. The photographs are presented in a gallery format in the front of the book. The second half shows them as a contact sheet with the technical notes added. Fairly comprehensive look at body makeup and lighting. This book strives to be artistic first and educational latter. Ms. Khornak is quite skillful in the art of photography. The infrared images are beautiful. As an educational tool, the format does not really work. Perhaps it would be more educational to have the technical details directly following each image.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A great book for Beginners........2003-02-22
I have noticed that the people that have reviewed this book did not give it very good reviews. But I think I know why. Well for one, one of the guys thought it was an art book, when it is obviously an instrutional book.
Before I go any further, I would like to emphasize that this is a BEGINNERS book. If you are looking for advanced techniques on photographing the nude, you may not like this book. As for me, I found it very helpful. As I am a beginner in nude photography.
The author does not go into much detail about each subject, but gives enough information to help out well. Plus, i find that part of the fun of photography is exploring, and we dont want all the fun spelled out for us.
The author goes step by step through the different kinds of nude photography. I have to say that the models are not very attractive, but that is a part of the beauty of photography. We are not looking to make playboy models here. For me, I am into black and white, so I was able to skip through much of the book to the parts where I was interested in. I also prefer real sunlight rather than artifitial light. This was an area of the book that helped me a lot. You are shown different views of models and how the light effects them. Also, the diffence in sunlight and lamp light. And trust me, there is a very big difference.
All and all, this book was a good buy for me. I am glad that I purchased it. I dont plan to read it and follow it as a photography bible, but there are some helpful tips that are nice.
Again, I will say that this book may not be for experienced photographers and is not an art book. But to help all of us amatuers out and to show us what we need to know.
not an art book.......2000-12-30
this book is not a book of art to look at, rather it is more of an instructional book, how to photograph nudes. though i don't think that these principles apply just to nudes, you could use them on any portriature. hedgecoe really has the basics down. the problem with the book, why i only gave it a three, is that the examples he uses are not very good pictures. i've never seen any of his other work, so i don't know what kind of photographer he is, but my understanding is that he can create better images that was shown in this book (in fact, many of the pictures look like leftovers from his work done in the late 70s early 80s). also, many of the techniques he describes are ones any photographer should know about, or at least any photographer who isn't just starting out. and a beginning photographer shouldn't try to take on nudes until they have a little experience under their belt. the final problem with the book is hedgecoe's apparent surprise at using computer imaging. it almost feels like he has just discovered the digital camera and photoshop.
it's not a horrible book, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't a beginner.
Don't bother.......1999-10-04
What a disappointment. This book contains very little that specifically relates to nude photography and nothing about glamor. It's a mediocre photo book. Most of the pics aren't even very good. This book doesn't come close to matching the quality of the author's other books I've seen.

Customer Reviews:
Technically interesting, visually terrible.........2004-09-08
Pros: Valuable informations and techniques. His approach to nude photography is enriching and motivating. Very soft and almost spiritual use of the naked body.
Cons: The pictures in this book are totally outdated (70's type), grainy and poorly printed. Few models are interesting and I personally don't like John's work. The technical info only refer to film cameras. Needs some serious update.
EXCELLENT!!!.......2003-01-22
Probably one of the best books I own. Very informative and detailed. Well illustrated. Teaches you what to look for in a picture. Gives you an idea of what you are trying to capture and how. If you are looking for a "how-to" book, then this is one of the best. Definitely a must have.
The "Pocket" Reference for Photographing the Nude.......2001-12-09
John Hedgecoe has provided many photographers (including me) with uncountable reference books on learning photography for many years. In fact, considering I had his volume on Basic Photography almost 25 years ago, he's a premier contributor to photographic education. "Photographing the Nude" continues his excellent and very in-depth style of covering a subject. As an idea and posing guide alone it's well worth the (very affordable) price. The only small criticism is that he has pulled the images from those same 25 years I've been following him. Some are dated and have the stale, British "Page Three" look. Easy to overlook considering the value elsewhere!
Brilliant work by a brilliant photographer.......2001-06-22
All in color! Capture the sensuality of the human form--male and female, alone and in couples--in artistic photographs. With expert photographer and best-selling author John Hedgecoe as your guide, you can master this difficult subject. More than 300 photographs in both color and black-and-white fire the imagination and illustrate Hedgecoe's practical advice. Explore Finally!! There are many nude books out there, but very few of them actually "teach" you how to photograph "the Nude."
Hedgecoe, bestselling photography author of many books, discusses all aspects of shooting indoors, including posing a model, lighting, choosing film, and selecting props and accessories. He also discusses outdoor shots, but most Nudes are traditionally shot indoors. (Try to find a model willing to pose in the middle of Central Park!)
This book teachs and helps you create *your own* style using unusual viewpoints, reflections, soft-focus effects, texture, and more. Also discussed is the use of special effects (body painting), depth of field, and computer images.
This is a must have for the aspiring photographer.

"Most Innovative Dracula in a Century".......2004-12-02
Memorable quotes from Reviews for Sword of Dracula:
(See http://www.swordofdracula.com )
"One of the coolest reinterpretations of Bram Stoker's character in years...Imagine the grunts from ALIENS taking on those 28 DAYS LATER zombies, and you have some idea of the feel of this story... if you like horror comics, you'll love the hell out of this one. " --Cinescape
"An adrenaline rushed no-holds barred read that takes a great high concept and runs with it at full speed.... Sword of Dracula is a visually impressive, action packed tour-de-force that is a must read for any and all action-horror fans. Highly recommended." CHUD (Cinematic Happenings Under Development)
" Sword of Dracula is a vampire story told right... Dracula himself is everything you always thought him to be, and more." Comixtreme
"The most unique take on Dracula in over a century ... call this MAXIMUM DRACULA... cover to cover SWORD OF DRACULA #3 is the one issue you MUST buy! ...When Dracula goes into action, you see it AND you truly believe it! It's almost like a Hollywood blockbuster leaping off the page with each panel!"
-- ComicFanatic
"A daring re-envisioning of the legend of Dracula ... delves even deeper into the mythos of Dracula, painting what may be one of the most disturbing portraits of the monstrous icon to date ...a winning package through and through.
-- Mediasharx
"A very gritty, sophisticated, modern day action adventure epic - with the emphasis squarely on action and adventure. This is probably the best take on the vampire genre I've seen in a long time."
--SilverBullet
"Henderson's vision of Dracula is the real deal. Heck, for me, it's the best imagining of 'Dracula' yet. (It's like he tapped into some primal energy in creating this version.)"
The Kuala Lumpur daily, THE MALAY MAIL
"Image's Sword of Dracula is quickly becoming a hit, and it's no wonder why... Buffy ain't got nothing on this."
UndergroundOnline
"It's a guy's dream adventure, complete with female soldier lead to fantasize about!" --Comics Worth Reading.
"If you're missing action in modern comics as much as I am, this book is for you! Henderson and Scott prove that fast pacing can be as effective, if not more so, in story telling than the dirge-like pace of most modern comics. Dracula in S.O.D. is interesting in that he has powers to control blood. He can do strange, mystic things with blood, use it as weapon, turn it into a sword. This would look amazing in CGI." --Aint it Cool News.
"One of the best takes on Dracula since Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee! ...Think "Full Metal Jacket" meets "Dracula"! ...In almost 80 years of movie making, and even more years of storytelling, Henderson does something that no other creator/movie maker has done... With just this first issue, Henderson already has this Drac fan hoping to see this story on the big screen!" Comic Fanatic
"Good [comics are] like the proverbial needle in a haystack. Well I just read Sword of Dracula, and all I can say is that I think I've found a needle... This issue establishes Dracula in all his dark glory. ... It incorporates bits of myth and bits of history into a gory, blood-filled new legend. ... Scott draws Sword of Dracula as if born to the role... gritty and cinematic." --Comixtreme
"One of the most original takes on the Dracula legend that I've personally read... the art is gorgeous; intricately detailed and bursting with energy and style." --Silver Bullet Comics

Jack Casserly arrived in Rome in 1957 as a young correspondent for the International News Service, and there he stayed for seven years, covering such matters as papal politics in the time of John XXIII, whom Casserly counted as a friend; Italy's struggle to rebuild its economy after years of war; and the rise of European communism in a time of Cold War containment. He does this all with great good humor, often at his own expense as a blundering American trying to navigate through daily life in a city famed for dissimulation and not-quite-straight answers. Written 30 years after his tenure in Rome, Casserly's memoir reads as freshly as today's news.

The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson
ASIN: 1552634396 |
Book Description
For more than 80 years, The Group of Seven has been Canada's best-known art collective. Founded in 1920, the Group-Franklin Carmichael, Lawren S. Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank H. Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald, Frederick H. Varley, A.J. Casson, Edwin Holgate, and Lionel LeMoine Fitzgerald-was recognized for their strikingly bold, modernist and colourful images of the Canadian landscape. In creating their art, the Group also contributed greatly to Canada's emerging sense of identity. In their inaugural exhibition catalogue, the Group poignantly wrote: 'An art must grow and flower in the land before the country will be a real home for its people.' In The Group of Seven in Western Canada, Catharine Mastin, curator of the Glenbow exhibition, along with five other Canadian scholars and curators explore the inspiration and influence of the west on both the Group's artwork and their sense of national identity. The book focuses on the significant themes and works produced by the Group from artistic, political, geographical, social and cultural perspectives in order to create the first, and most comprehensive, study of the Group's western muse. With 130 images and photographs to accompany the fascinating and insightful text, The Group of Seven in Western Canada is a unique and outstanding contribution to the history and legacy of Canadian art. the glenbow museum is a world-class multi-disciplinary institution that includes a permanent art collection, western Canada's largest museum, Canada's largest non-government archives, and an unparalleled western Canada reference library. Located in Calgary, it is world-renowned for its innovative programming and exhibitions.
