Book Description
There are hundreds of lodges, inns and hotels in America's West, but only a handful of historic Great Lodges. Great Lodges were constructed in the Western United States from the turn of the century through the 1930s. Today, they offer more than just a place to stay, but an opportunity to relive the past.
Through stunning color photographs, historical pictures, rare architectural drawings and a well-documented text, Great Lodges of the West uncovers the story of twelve of the West's most significant historical lodges.
National Parks, Forests and Monuments are hosts to most of these wilderness landmarks. The book opens with the first (and some feel the finest) Great Lodge of the West, Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
Four lodges in the Northwest are featured including Paradise Inn, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, and Oregon's Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood National Forest; Oregon Caves Chateau, Oregon Caves National Monument; and Crater Lake Lodge, Crater Lake National Park.
The canyon land lodges, El Tovar, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, and Bryce Canyon Lodge, Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, are architectural treasures of the southwest.
Tour the most elegant of our National Park landmarks, The Ahwahnee in Yosemite National Park, California, as well as the chalet-inspired lodges in the Glacier National Park region: Glacier Park Lodge, Lake McDonald Lodge, Many Glacier Hotel, and the whimsical Prince of Wales Hotel in adjoining Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada.
In the foreward, National Trust for Historic Preservation President Richard Moe captures the heart of the story, Great Lodges of the West reminds us that America's scenic wonderlands, best known for their mountains, canyons, geysers and waterfalls, are also dotted with the brick andboard evidence of our nation's history. These buildings are a part of the American soul.
Yes, America loves their Great Lodges. They house not only the political, social, and architectural history of our national past, but thousands of individual memories. That's what is so important about preserving the Great Lodges of the West. While some have been blessed with extensive rehabilitation, others are aging less gracefully. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has placed the splendid Many Glacier Hotel on its Most Endangered list of historic structures and Paradise Inn, the 81- year-old inn at Mount Rainier National Park, is in need of millions of dollars of rehabilitation work. Yet, the grandeur of these structures always overshadows the tracks of time.
Great Lodges of the West is being received with enthusiasm and praise:
Old Faithful Inn is the first lodge featured in Great Lodges of the West. The Inn is as much a part of Yellowstone National Park as the geyser it is named after. The author covers its history and architecture and brings to life a much loved landmark. Lee Whittlesey, Park Historian, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Christine Barnes has pulled together some little known history about the historic lodges of Glacier National Park and the region, then spun a story history buffs and park visitors will truly enjoy. Historic photos from the park archives along with architectural drawings and color photography makes Great Lodges of the West both informative to read and beautiful to look at. Deirdre Shaw, Curator, Glacier National Park, Montana
Great Lodges of the West tells the important story of Oregon's Crater Lake Lodge. Christine Barnes informs the reader of a Lodge built on naive optimism, its deterioration, and the real threat of demolition. She then illustrates how the Lodge's rebirth is evidence of what citizens can accomplish when they value their architectural heritage. David Wark, Historic Architect, Crater Lake Lodge rehabilitation project
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Lodges ... amazing book.......1999-11-30
Wonderful content and photos ... I've lived and worked in Yellowstone for 20 years and had never seen the "once approved, never built" drawing of the Old Faithful Inn. have been to many of the "lodges" featured, and will use the book as inspiration to visit a few more! I've scooped up several for gift giving this holiday season.
The most appreciated book I have ever given.......1999-08-11

This beautiful gift book will transport you to the majestic lodges of our national parks to relive the glory of past vacations or plan adventures anew. This book and the PBS television series of the same title (to air in spring 2002) take armchair travelers into these architectural wonders and explore the surrounding natural beauty of our national parks. Lodges, wildlife, and stunning vistas are showcased in 175 full-color photographs, along with historical documents from the PBS series. Customer Reviews:
Glorious photographs will take you there!.......2006-08-06
This book features amazing photos of the Great Lodges along with brief histories of the parks, locations, and lodges themselves. Wonderful illustrations and blue-print depictions are also included. Great gift idea or coffee table book! Will make you long for more travel time!
Glorious Photos, Wonderful Book.......2003-02-08
We purchased this book as a thank-you gift for friends, and we were *delighted* with the quality and beauty of it. Truly glorious photos, not a ton of information but enough, and makes a spectacular gift. Highly recommended.
Here's a way to see America.......2002-04-30
What a treat to find Great Lodges of the National Parks! Not only is the book full of lucious color photographs of the lodges (both inside and out and every season), but historic images and architectural drawings that make you really appreciate the simple fact that they were built in the first place. You also get the full history along with a sense of what the lodges are like today written in a very accessible style. I know people who are trying to go to all of the lodges in Christine Barnes' books. I plan on beginning this summer. (The book also includes Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood National Forest outside of Portland.)
Beautiful book with spectacular pictures!.......2002-03-30
This is a gorgeous book.
It has 192 pages--loaded with lovely glossy pictures.
Not all of these lodges, however, are located in the national parks.Timberline Lodge is in a national forest and Oregon Caves Chateau is located at a national monument.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking. Historical pictures as well as present day pictures are located in the book.
This book is VERY similar to the Great Lodges of the West book (also by Christine Barnes). Some of the EXACT same pictures that are in the Great Lodges of the West book are in this book!
But this book adds more pictures.
This one has more pages (as compared to 136 pages) and this one has more pictures. Also covered in this one is Belton Chalet and Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (which the other book doesn't cover in full detail).
16 lodges are featured:
1) Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming)
2) The Ahwahnee (Yosemite National Park- California)
3) Paradise Inn (Mount Rainier National Park, Washington)
4) Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood National Forest- Oregon)
5) Oregon Caves Chateau (Oregon Caves National Monument-Oregon)
6) Crater Lake Lodge (Crater Lake National Park-Oregon)
7) El Tovar (Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim)
8) Zion Park Lodge (Zion National Park)
9) Bryce Canyon Lodge (Bryce Canyon National Park)
10) Grand Canyon Lodge (Grand Canyon National Park- North Rim)
11) Glacier Park Lodge (Glacier National Park- Montana)
12) Belton Chalet (Glacier National Park)
13) Lake McDonald Lodge (Glacier National Park)
14) Many Glacier Hotel (Glacier National Park)
15) Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (Glacier National Park)
16) Prince of Wales Hotel (Waterton Lakes National Park,
Alberta, Canada)
Also in the front and back is a map that shows where these lodges are located. In the back are Preservation Resources and Travelers' Resources (websites, reservation information, etc...)
Although I didn't know that this book would be so similar to the Great Lodges of the West book--(it's just a bigger version), I do not regret buying it. I have them both and the pictures are mesmerizing.

What a bargain for such a beautiful little book.......2002-04-30
This is the perfect book for anyone who loves the Grand Canyon. Not only do you get gorgeous photos and historic shots of the 1905 El Tovar hotel, but there's more on Mary Jane Colter's Grand Canyon work and a chapter on the park. This is a perfect stocking stuffer or very reasonable little gift for someone heading to the canyon for a honeymoon or anniversary!

Book Description
This book will help both the buyer and seller make accurate evaluations. Full-color photographs of more than 500 items together with complete descriptions and current values make this an invaluable reference. Lighting implements, fireplace equipment, kitchen items, tools, hardware fixtures, decorative personal objects, and household copper items including entrance foyer, parlor study, kitchen dining room, and bed bath pieces are featured. 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Mary Frank Gaston's study of antiques began during the mid-1960s when she and her husband lived in New England which is so rich in our nation's history. She has authored many titles, with subjects including Flow Blue China, Blue Willow, English China, Limoges Porcelain, R.S. Prussia, Antique Brass Copper, Knowles, Taylor Knowles China, and Art Deco. Most of her books have seen multiple editions and/or volumes, as her books are extremely popular among collectors. REVIEW: A reader from Frederick, MD says, "I read 'No Dragons On My Quilt' to my daughter about 12 years ago after borrowing it from a library. Of course we ordered our very own copy. Back then we got it in hardback. Our whole family loves the book so much that we tried to order an extra copy for my son a few years ago. We wanted copies for each child to be passed down to their own kids when they were grown. (It's that kind of book.)"
Customer Reviews:
A Few Nice Things, Mostly Not.......2000-09-10
There are a few nice pieces in this book but not enough to warrant a whole book. There is one picture I spotted as being identical to a picture on another page. Many of the items one could see by going to a Copper and Brass store that sells new items. I now have the book, "Metalwork in Early America : Copper and It's Alloys from the Winterthur Collection,". If you want in-depth information on antique copper and brass, I'm afraid you're going to have to go the money. This is what I was looking for when I bought this other book. Save your money.
Excellent Referral Source.......2000-08-22
This paperback with glossy cover is a must for collectors inthe metalware field. It's strongest points are in the excellent and numerous photos presented (all of which are in color). ... Most people would find the prices paid for identical pieces to be much lower, but it is still a worthy effort.
The author also devotes the last chapter to discussing forgeries, fakes, and reproductions which is also a must for a novice or anyone who hasn't had years of hands on collecting in the field.
If you had only one guide for the field, although I would never recommend only using one reference source, this could be it.
The only weakness with the book is that the text and background surrounding the various pieces is seriously lacking. But taking into consideration the price and the superb pictures, it is money well spent.
At the same time I would also recommend "Collecting Antique Metalware" copyright 1974 by Evan Perry. It has a mixture of both color and b/w photos in a hardback, but it much superior in explanatory text. I would whole heartedly give each book 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
easy money maker for author!!.......2007-03-17
since their are not many digital photography books for instructors,
they pick what they think will fit the bill-it's irritating when they don't even look at the book before requiring it. the book is o.k., but
should not be used for a textbook! it's insulting. to anyone interested in
photography keep this in mind-photography books, especially
the old and true, and info. on the internet will teach you the basics. because photography is mainly digital, it is very well suited for self-study. don't waste your time buying required marginal books and paying for photography classes. your money will be better spend on good glass(lenses) and a tripod, and of course learn photoshop--just my opinion
on a friday night.
DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME.......2006-10-20
This book really is an insult. It's "lesson" and "assignments" are HORRIBLE. They ask you to research in magazines different lighting effects that you think were used in his book. In a field where doing is truly the best learning experience this book is not worth the paper it was printed on. Check it out from a library if you must but you will shortly find it is an insulting read.
BUYER BEWARE!!!.......2003-02-24
I had to purchase this book for a university studio photography course...unfortunately, the instructor never even flipped through it. It is by far the WORST photography book, really the worst book I have ever purchased! There are typo's, the "example photos" and instruction sometime are not the same. The projects are lame and really teach nothing. I would not recommend this book under any circumstances...AVOID AT ALL COST!!! [...]

Customer Reviews:
Really good, but the editing and translation is lacking.......2004-10-28
I first became aware of this excellent series through Image Comics, so I was quite estatic when I heard that Comics One had licensed it after Image dropped the series. However, in contrast to the accurate translations and vivid colours of the Image edition, Comic One's version is disappointingly washed out, the transltion is awkward and stiff and the general effect is one of shabbiness.
However readers should not let these flaws prevent them from picking up one of the most exciting comic book series I have ever read. This is not for anyone particularly interested in story. Instead it seems to be aimed at anyone who has ever complained that there was too much talking and not enough action in comics nowadays. The action is fast, frequent, over-the-top and superbly drawn. In addition to this, the main character Tiger Yin a remarkably likeable and sympathetic character, which makes supporting him in his battles all the more worthwhile.
Mega Dragon & Tiger is a great introduction to the world of Hong Kong comics.

Book Description
Cottage: America's Favorite Home Inside and Out celebrates the romance and simplicity that give cottage homes their endless appeal. With inspiring locations, colorful gardens, cozy interiors, and intriguing nooks and crannies, the 24 cottages featured in this unique collection are sure to delight with equal measures of charm and diversity. Illustrated with spectacular photographs and watercolor drawings, the cottages span the country from Florida to the Pacific Northwest, with stops along the way at a converted schoolhouse in Missouri, a prefab cottage in Wisconsin, a straw-bale cottage in California, and a cottage community in Washington state.
Whether new or remodeled, permanent home or weekend getaway, each of the cottages is intimately scaled, seamlessly linked to the landscape, and brimming with personal detail...all good reasons why the cottage remains America's favorite home, inside and out.
"Cottages delight our eyes, warm our hearts, and soothe our souls. The fact is, at some point in our lives we all need them. If there's a cottage in your future, you'll find an abundance of inspiration and information in this book. No way will you get to the last page without have sketched out plans for your own 'someday' cottage!"
--Jim Tolpin, Author of The New Cottage Home, contributing editor, Cottage Living magazine
Customer Reviews:
Love this book too much!.......2007-01-26
Book in excellent condition...I guess I like this book a lot (after I received it, I noticed I already owned it!
Large ego statements; only a few cottages.......2006-11-03
If you are looking for small scale, cozy cottages you will be disappointed. For example, at page 37 there is a very comtemporary box style, three story structure, perhaps 2,800 square feet; the facade is deceptively board and batten, painted barn red. The living/dining/kitchen is one big open room, perhaps 36' by 14' with a 16' high ceiling. One outside wall, 36 by 16, is glass, which is impressive, but not conducive to an intimate, cozy milieu.
At page 77 there is a three story prefab 'art moderne' structure that makes an impressive architectural statement, but it is by no stretch a "cottage".
At page 187 is a remodeled barn: it's three stories, all open inside, ceilings 16 feet or more high, with a wall of glass. It's certainly not a cottage. It doesn't even look much like a barn anymore.
The book cover suggests "each of the cottages is intimately scaled, seamlessly linked to the landscape...", which is just merchandising, promotional nonsense. For the most part these structures are just large houses, ego statements for the owner and architect. The authors are revisionists, changing the meaning of 'cottage' to include whatever they wished to put in their book.
Boring, boring.......2006-06-06
I love cottage style and have a nice collection of books. Based on consumer reviews I bought it and boy was I disappointed. It was, to say the least, a snooze as far as the photos go. Since I cannot afford to buy a home presently, I love to get lost in the photos of a wonderfully photographed book. This is NOT one of them.
Inspirational.......2006-05-18
A sampling of cottages from across the country - backgrounds on the owners of the cottages, beautiful interior and exterior pictures and floor plans. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures - very inspirational.
Cottage: America's Favorite Home Inside and Out.......2006-02-24

Book Description
Here, for the first time, Ole Anderson finally tells his story. The people who know him, know that Ole is never hesitant to speak his mind and this book is no exception.
Combining facts and opinion, Ole's biography is a straightforward look at the many phases of his career in the wild, if somewhat seedy, world of professional wrestling. From his days in amateur wrestling, to the time when he hooked up with Gene and Lars Anderson as the Minnesota Wrecking Crew, Ole relates 30-plus years of never-before-told stories.
Ole tells of his feuds, both inside the ring and out, with people like Ric Flair, Wahoo McDaniel, Mr. Wrestling, Dusty Rhodes, and Bill Watts.
However, his biggest feuds took places behind the scenes in the halls and offices of corporate giant, Superstation WTBS. The matches in the ring were nothing compared to his battles with The Suits, corporate executives like Vince McMahon, Jim Barnett, Bill Shaw, Jim Herd, and Eric Bischoff. In Ole's own words, "The wrestling matches may have been staged and scripted, but there was nothing `fake' about the corporate and legal battles."
As a former wrestler, booker, promoter, owner, and executive producer, Ole goes deeper in the inner workings of professional wrestling than anyone ever has. He tells the stories about financial, legal, and drug problems that plagued the wrestling business.
It doesn't matter whether you hate wrestling or love it. This is a powerful story about a man who stood up to the establishment. His insight, humor, and colorful use of the English language makes this a "no-holds barred" book that you won't be able to put down.

Same old tough guy talk.......2007-01-09
If you like formulaic tough guy talk common to old time wrasslers of the"I was always the straightest talking, toughest guy in the room, who never lost a fight" vein this book is for you.
Although one must admire OLE'S honesty in admitting that he was never in the same class as the likes of Thesz and the old shooters as far as wrestling was concerned. Anderson's description of how new wrestling prospects were treated is chilling in its brutality. Opens your eyes to another side of the wrasslin business that's for sure.
Worth the buy if you are interested in one person and one person only's viewpoint with no room for alernative opinions or reasoned analysis. Then again it is a book about OLE ANDERSON and apparently that is him, so as an autobiogrpahy it serves it's purpose. Worth the buy but not in the same class as top flight wrestling books like "Hooker" and "Wrestlers are like Seagulls" in my opinion.
Hey, Tough Guy.......2006-10-13
The Rock had a career in the ring and as a booker that covered the years dominated by the territories that made up the NWA to the emergence of two national companies - WCW and WWF - and some minor regional promotions.
Trained by Verne Gagne, Anderson's tough-guy persona pushed his career to main events with his "brothers," Gene & Lars and later with Arn, as the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. He also was an original member of the Four Horsemen, with Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Arn and manager J.J. Dillon.
During his years in the ring, Anderson also worked booking matches for the promotions, which was a major way for top wrestlers to stay in the business as their careers wound down.
In the early 1990s, Anderson was part of the booking committee for WCW. He created The Black Scorpion and was the ominous voice that haunted Sting throughout the angle. In 1994, Anderson and his son - who was training to become a WCW grappler - were fired by Eric Bischoff. Since then, Anderson has mostly stayed away from the business.
This is where the book picks up Anderson's story and why the sub-title plays a major role throughout. The autobiographical material is outstanding and recommended for older fans or those wanting a history of pro wrestling as it evolved away from promoters having sliced up the country under the NWA monopoly.
The criticism Anderson dishes out - oftentimes aimed at Flair - gets as grating as The Black Scorpion's voice. Anderson has some good points, but only the biggest myopic would feel his outlook was the direction the business should have taken.
Overall, Anderson could not get out of character to deliver real solutions to the problems he saw in the office.
Good Stories but Sour Grapes.......2006-02-23
An interesting book, I loved Ole as one of the Four Horsemen, but to hear him denigrate Flair's wrestling skills taxed credulity.
If you've just seen Flair in WWE nowdays, you can be excused for buying Anderson's comments, but when you look at his classic matches with Ricky Steamboat, or Terry Funk (or Sting, back in the NWA days) you see a guy who could match (and exceed) each of these guys hold-for-hold. There are very few wrestlers nowdays (basically four: A.J. Styles, Shawn Michaels, Kurt ANgle and Chris Benoit) who could even hold their own with prime Flair.
Most of the rest are all products of Vince McMahon's sad circus that he passes off as Wrestling.
One of the Better Books about Wrestling.......2006-01-28
This books should be called, "How Corporate America Ruins Everything." This isn't just a story about wrestling, it's a story about big money coming in and taking control of something it knows nothing about and running it into the ground. What I liked about this book is that Anderson is not just an athlete, he's a business school graduate, so he knows what he's talking about. I'm sure he's stretched the truth here and there, or left out certain details, but the circumstances and situations he describes are believeable and told with a degree of spit and vinegar that is sorely lacking from wrestling as we know it.
This book is interesting on a variety of levels: there's his relationship with Gene Anderson, the quiet thug who was happy to let Ole do all the talking and make all the decisions; his descriptions of the territories, and how they operated; and his portraits of some of my favorite wrestlers and storylines growing up. But what really sets this book apart is Anderson's analysis of wrestling "psychology" - what kept us glued to our TVs and got us into the stadiums and arenas.
I divided my time reading this book as well as John Irving's, (another wrestler), "Until I Find You," and I found "Inside Out," infinitely more interesting and captivating. When you read it, you feel like you're sitting on Anderson's porch over a beer listening to him tell you his story. There's a certain charm to the fact that for as much as he uses the word "Sh#!" he never actually spells it.
This book is for anyone who grew up watching the NWA and AWA on Saturday afternoons and for those who know nothing of wrestling but the WWE. It's nostalgic, insighful, and at times, poignant. It does get a little repititive near the end but I think has more to say about Anderson's passion for the sport than his regrets.
This is a truly American story, and a comment on our culture.
A Great Short Course on the Business of Pro Wrestling.......2006-01-12
This is an excellent book. Ole Anderson--while perhaps a bit self-absorbed--demonstrates that he was a class act in the world of pro wrestling. He pulls no punches. He exposes a lot of the modern wrestling world and the "stars" in it as what they truly are--a sham.
Another reviewer criticized this book as just being about how the past was better than today--well, no kidding! That's his point. Read the subtitle of the book: "How Corporate America Desroyed Professional Wrestling." Ole sums it up perfectly. He says that before Vince McMahon took control of the wrestling world, pro wrestling as a business was a champion thoroughbred race horse. It was a business that routinely, week-in, week-out drew thousands of fans to arenas all over the country. Vince McMahon has now beaten down that race horse to where now it's nothing but an old nag pulling a wooden cart. And to win viewers McMahon's dressed up the old nag by parading naked women and midgets all around it. How better can the state of wrestling today be described than that?
If you never experienced pro wrestling before McMahon monopolized it, you missed out on something very special. Read Ole's book and find out.
Also Ole's book is a great primer for anyone considering becoming a pro wrestler or a pro wrestling promoter. And he's funny as hell too. He had me in stitches.
Oh, and yes, Ole does expose the myth that Flair is a great wrestler. I admit it--for the longest time I was a HUGE Flair fan, but over the years, in the back of my mind I kept asking myself, "Why does he do that stupid flip over the turnbuckle in every match? Why does he do the Flair flop in every match? Why does he fall on his ass every time he shoves the ref and the ref shoves him back?" Why? Because that's all he's got! He's like a rock band with only one or two songs in its set that just keeps playing those same songs over and over and over because they don't know any others!
Again, read this book. You won't regret it. You can buy it used for cheap.

Book Description
Despite the backlash against lesbian and gay rights occurring in cities and states across the country, a growing number of corporations are actually expanding protections and benefits for their gay and lesbian employees. Why this should be, and why some corporations are increasingly open to inclusive policies while others are determinedly not, is what Nicole C. Raeburn seeks to explain in Changing Corporate America from Inside Out.
A long-overdue study of the workplace movement, Raeburn's analysis focuses on the mobilization of lesbian, gay, and bisexual employee networks over the past fifteen years to win domestic partner benefits in Fortune 1000 companies. Drawing on surveys of nearly one hundred corporations with and without gay networks, intensive interviews with human resources executives and gay employee activists, as well as a number of case studies, Raeburn reveals the impact of the larger social and political environment on corporations' openness to gay-inclusive policies, the effects of industry and corporate characteristics on companies' willingness to adopt such policies, and what strategies have been most effective in transforming corporate policies and practices to support equitable benefits for all workers.

Captures the mosiac of styles that makes LA unique........1998-04-09
Although this book qualifies as a typical coffee-table book, the photography and text provide an intimate, intriguing look at the many styles of architecture and decorating that can be found in LA. Especially interesting are the historical properties. I recently (and reluctantly) moved away from the City of Angels, and I miss the region immensely. I'm looking for a copy of this out-of-print book as a keepsake and an inspiration.

Book Description
America stands poised on the brink of an explosive period in race relations. Affirmative action, for a generation the major public-policy program aimed at reducing the disparity between blacks and whites, has been under strong intellectual and institutional attack by its critics and is very likely soon to be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Glenn Loury views this crisis as an opportunity to move beyond our racial myopia, to assess our progress and take stock of our failures. In One by One from the Inside Out, a pointed and often eloquent look at race in America, Loury calls on Americans of all races to break free of the rhetorical box created by obsession with preferential policies. In a gripping commentary that transcends the simplistic labels "liberal" and "conservative," Loury assails the appalling absence of candid discourse on sensitive racial issues.
In an important opening chapter, Loury posits that black American history is defined by the conflict between two important ideas. One, advocated by Booker T. Washington, argues for blacks to earn equality and acceptance through achievement. The other, associated with W.E.B. Du Bois and adopted by the civil rights movement as well as black-power groups, urges blacks to demand and agitate for all legal, social, and economic rights. White acceptance, if it mattered at all, would follow. Seeking to rescue Washington's views from ignominy, Loury argues that it is now time to restore a balance between the two great traditions and to build a new civil rights consensus around the notion of black self-improvement.
One by One from the Inside Out takes a hard and critical look at the controversies surrounding such issue as black-Jewish relations, welfare reform, the racial dimension in academic performance and in crime, black dependence on public assistance, the changing nature of family structure among blacks and whites, and the growing concern over "hate speech" on college campuses and elsewhere. Urging blacks to be more willing to compete on their very real merits -- and asking whites to overcome their obsession with "color-blind" and "color-conscious" policies -- Loury argues that we have failed as a nation to develop a consensus that would ensure equality of opportunity for black Americans while upholding the integrity of our democratic system.
One by One from the Inside Out is one brave man's moving call for all Americans to rethink their attitudes toward race, and it presents a clear and compelling vision of how to heal our country's most divisive wound.
Customer Reviews:
A moderate's view on race relations in the 90's.......1999-03-08
A contrast to Cornel West's "Race Matters," Loury takes a bold step into the middle of the intellectual arena. While refusing to spout purely conservative or progressive rhetoric, Loury puts forth compelling arguments for a shift from W.E.B DuBois' liberal ideals to a Booker Washington-like self-help gospel. A very thorough examination of the problems created by political correctness is also included. Overall, well written, but not going to change the world.

A first- rate journalistic tour of fifty years of American history.......2006-09-06
David Schoenbrun was one of the most distinguished print and television journalists of his generation. In this work he surveys fifty years of American history, from the Roosevelt to the Reagan Administrations. He was a correspondent in the Depression and through the Second World War, through Truman and Eisenhower administrations. With the coming into power of Kennedy he was transferred by CBS from Paris where he had long been Bureau Head of CBS to the biggest beat of all, Washington.
Schoenbrun tells of dramatic meetings with leaders from DeGaulle and HoChiMinh in his early Paris days to Kennedy and Johnson later on. A patriotic American who fought in the second world war he found himself strongly criticized for his negative reports on the Vietnam War.
In this work he sets out his journalistic credo which he learned from the great Edward R. Murrow. This means first of all studying and knowing one's subject thoroughly. And secondly, it means getting to all the sources, all the people that can provide key information on the subject. It also means expressing the truth of the situation no matter what authority or power it might offend.
Schoenbrun is a good and fluent writer, who provides anecdotes of interest on every page. He confesses that he sometimes made the journalistic error of working to be a participant in the making of history, and not simply a reporter of it. For instance he tells how Chip Bohlen was appointed US Ambassador to Paris after he suggested this to President Kennedy. And he tells of how he vainly tried to convince the French about the futility of their efforts in Vietnam.
Schoenbrun was a great supporter of the New Deal, and found himself opposing many Reagan policies which he thought were aimed at taking this apart.
He is warm in his appreciation of professional colleagues like Murrow, Howard K. Smith and producer Don Hewitt. He is less so about Fred Friendly, and the latter- stage William Paley.
Schoenbrun's book is not simply an excellent book of journalism it is a fascinating tour through half a century of American history.
I very much enjoyed it.
