Juan Nepomuceno Cortina was born on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande in 1824. Known as "The Red Robber of the Rio Grande", the author recasts Cortina as a protector of Tejanos from the abuses of the Texas Rangers in the years following the United States - Mexico War of 1846-48. In 1848 he established La Raza Unida, originally a secret organization. He organized and armed the local Mexican population and in 1859 led 500 to 600 men in an attempt to establish control of the land in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. This became known as the Cortina Rebellion.

            Book Description

Conflicts between Hispanic farmers and developers made for compelling reading in The Milagro Beanfield War, the famous novel of life in a northern New Mexico village in which tradition triumphs over modernity. But as cities grow and industries expand, are acequias, or community irrigation ditches, a wise and efficient use of water in the arid Southwest? José Rivera presents the contemporary case for the value of acequias and the communities they nurture in the river valleys of southern Colorado and New Mexico.

Recognizing that "water is the lifeblood of the community," Rivera delineates an acequia culture based on a reciprocal relationship between irrigation and community. The acequia experience grows out of a conservation ethic and a tradition of sharing that should be recognized and preserved in an age of increasing competition for scarce water resources.

"A worthwhile contribution to the future management of water resources."--Professor Michael C. Meyer

Lays out the contemporary legal and administrative status of these ancient irrigation institutions, suggesting public policy measures to keep the system alive.

            Book Description

Del Rioís roots grew in the sandy soil by San Felipe Creek along with the myths and dreams of the old Wild West, where the mighty Rio Grande dances through the dusty lands of the Lone Star State. Ancient nomads left their mark in the riverside canyons of this border country long before the springs at Del Rio became a lonely waystation providing water and rest to travelers, merchants, and soldiers marching the long, hot, and dry San AntonioñEl Paso Road. When the products of ranching began riding the rails to eastern markets, Del Rioís population exploded and the town became known as the Wool and Mohair Capital of the World. ÝÝDel Rio: Queen City of the Rio Grande tells tales of the starry nights and shimmering sunlight of the storied Texas frontier, with vivid images detailing the gripping drama and unique memories chronicled here. From the U.S. Armyís experimental Camel Corps to the worldís most powerful radio stations in the 1930s and the U-2 spy planes involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis, Del Rio, seat of one of the largest counties in Texas and sister to the thriving Mexican border city Ciudad Acu"a, has played a part on the world stage. Those stories and more, including the little known ìItalian Colonyî of West Texas and landmark civil rights court cases, are told here. ÝÝ

Laura Curtin lived and worked among the curanderas and Native Americans of Northern New Mexico during the early part of the twentieth century. She fell in love with the plants and their lore, and later, at the prompting of a friend, decided to record them. Healing Herbs was first published in 1947, at a time when interest in traditional healing in Northern New Mexico was in decline. It helped preserve traditional information for a new generation -- when editor Michael Moore arrived in Santa Fe in the 1960s he found copies of Curtin's book as a prized possession in many traditional households. The book is unique in the literature of ethnobotany in that it was written essentially by an insider in the tradition, rather than by an observer doing interviews.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to herbal uses of native Southwestern plants.......1999-02-21

Living in the Southwestern Chihuahuan desert, I am always on the search for sources of information regarding local flora and particularly ethnobotanical uses of plants. This is an excellent guide originally published in 1947 and edited by Michael Moore who I consider to be an expert on herbal uses of native southwestern plants. For anyone interested in this subject, a fabulous resource to have in your library!

            Book Description

Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and Bancroft Prize for History, Great River was hailed as a literary masterpiece and enduring classic when it first appeared in 1954. It is an epic history of four civilizations--Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American--that people the Southwest through ten centuries. With the skill of a novelist, the veracity of a scholar, and the love of a long-time resident, Paul Horgan describes the Rio Grande, its role in human history, and the overlapping cultures that have grown up alongside it or entered into conflict over the land it traverses. Now in its fourth revised edition, Great River remains a monumental part of American historical writing.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book but NOT a "Quick History".......2006-02-02

The level of detail amassed by Horgan for this book is nothing short of incredible. Roughly half the book is dedicated to historical events; the other half covers culture, the role of religion, native living conditions, and a hundred other nuances of day-to-day living by peoples (both native and the later Spanish/American cultures) along the Rio Grande.

Readers who want a VERY in-depth history of the Rio Grande can't do any better than this book. However, readers looking for a more general overview of events might want to consider other sources.

I probably fell into the latter category; I found myself skipping 2-5 pages at a time because I just wasn't that interested in knowing every single detail of (for example) how the Indians dressed and meticulously prepared bits of food for a ceremony to welcome the growing season. Or details covering 5 pages of how Spanish missionaries held a typical mass in the settlements in 1650.

That said, I recognize that this book is about as complete a works as could be published. I'd much rather skip over detail than have an account which isn't thorough.

            5 out of 5 stars Paul Horgan's best.......2003-09-14

This book is the best ever written on the history of the southwest along the Rio Grande. Horgan manages to capture the shared history of New Mexico, Texas and Mexico as no other historian/writer has ever done. This one will be around as long as readers want to understand history in the borderlands.

5 out of 5 stars Most complete introduction to the Rio Grande Valley.......1998-11-03

This two-volume series was my inroduction to Paul Horgan who became one of my favorite authors. It is interesting to note he and Frank Waters ('the Man who Killed the Deer') died recently just two weeks apart. They were both 92, and among the greatest authors who dealt with the Rio Grande. Mr. Hogan's dedication to detail set him apart from Willa Cather whose fame rests upon her book 'Death comes to the Archbishop,' using Lamy as her subject. She rejected the aproach of Paul Horgan who at the time was writing his own history, 'Lamy of Santa Fe.' Willa Cather was a novelist; Paul Horgan an historian, and of the two I prefer the truth. Anyone interested in the history of the Rio Grande will be delighted with Paul Horgan's two-volume introduction to it.

5 out of 5 stars Horgan's masterpiece history of the Rio Grande river........1995-11-08

One of the major materpieces of American historical writing. The two volumes are a continuing delight, far better than any historical novel. Scene succeds scene, filled with movement, passion and unbelievable heroism. Won the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prizes for History, and is considered the greatest history of the Rio Grande from pre-Columbian time to mid 20th century.

One hundred of his best cartoons and some of his zippiest columns sling humorous arrows at road cyclists, weekend warriors, and cyclo-cross fanatics. Targeting everyone from the "old guys who get fat in winter" to his "mud stud" - the bike shop mechanic who can turn a bicycle into a guided missile - O'Grady's acerbic wit is unsurpassed.

Patrick O'Grady is guerrilla cartooning at its finest. Book Description

As a hospice nurse Marilyn Azevedo had seen how disease could ravage a person's body and spirit, and how it could cripple friends and family with grief. She knew about life and death. Yet, nothing could prepare her for the journey she would face when her youngest child, Andy, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 16.

In this powerful memoir, readers share Azevedo's painful journey-from the days when she felt strong and powerful, to the days she just wanted to stay in bed and pull the covers over her head. But Azevedo's battle is more than a fight for her son's life as she takes on the health insurance bureaucracy and lobbies Congress to reform inequities. Sadly, reform comes too late to save Andy, but their efforts result in legislation preventing insurance companies from denying certain types of medical care.
