Book Description

Before-and-after photos of amazing room transformations in various styles inspire readers to take action.

Ideas for all ranges of skill levels, time commitment, and budget—from simple furniture rearrangement strategies to more dramatic changes in room surface treatments (floors, walls, counters, and more).

Each room makeover includes a section on multiple alternatives to one aspect of the redesign—such as wall finishes. These sections give readers more options for applying what they learn from the book to their own rooms.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated and Disappointing.......2006-06-30

While I did find some valuable tips, most of the rooms were outdated, and overall I was disappointed by this book. Try Trading Spaces' "Instant Impact" or Martha Stewart's "Decorating with Color" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Affordable decorating.......2006-05-18

Decorating that is affordable (not cheap) and realistic. Good ideas, suggestions and projects for all rooms.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for the DIY, HGTV, TLC Channel Fan.......2006-01-13

I watch a lot of HGTV, DIY and TLC channels and am hooked on the decorating shows.

I liked this book because it DID give practical info and many of the projects were not budget-busters. I mean the kitchens didn't look like they were using a $75K budget like on Designer's Challenge. Most of the projects seemed more in line of something a DIY could tackle, i.e. painting cabinets, sewing window coverings, wallpapering, etc.

Various decorating styles were covered in this book and I got lots of ideas from it. Most of the included projects did not seem difficult. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for ideas to update their home without spending LOTS of money.

5 out of 5 stars Become a Before & After pro indeed.......2005-09-26

This book explains how to transform different rooms in one's home as it clearly categorize the different rooms and shares design ideas for anyone, from people with an interest in Interior Design (like myself) even to individuals who don't really care about Design, but simply wishes to have change and variety. It is also simple in that sense because there are certain projects and "how-to" explanations for creating certain 'looks' directly from the rooms featured in the book. From creating your own storage cabinets and areas to wall treatments and other projects are featured in this book. This book has certainly spiked my interest in Interior Design even more. I love it and I can ALWAYS refer to it.

5 out of 5 stars hgtv before and after decorating.......2005-09-10

i love watching hgtv and do so almost every day. this book has great ideas and you can do most of the stuff by yourself. there are several projects that i plan to have my husband make for storage. they even let you deside your own style which is great because i love the way just little changes can make your whole room better. one of the better books to decorate with.

                  Book Description

A moving and eloquent memoir of a professional comic book artist.

Frank Thorne is one of the most respected and accomplished comic artists of his generation. He began drawing comic in the 1950s and quickly established himself as a supremely competent draftsman and storyteller. By the mid-'80s, he found himself drawing Red Sonja, a Conan spin-off for Marvel Comics, and discovered that he enjoyed drawing the female form so much that he bolted from mainstream comics and became one of the preeminent erotic artists of his time.

The Crystal Ballroom is Frank Thorne's sequel to his first illustrated autobiography, Drawing Sexy Women—"coming of age in the spring of '46," as the sub-title has it. Thorne describes his growing passion for popular culture—Harry James, Artie Shaw, Satchmo, Betty Grable, Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon as well as Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon newspaper strip (in The New York Journal American), pulp fiction and movies—his growing interest in drawing and playing the coronet, his budding sexuality, and, of course, his dream of playing in The Crystal Ballroom with his jazz idols. By turns an expression of postwar exuberance and bittersweet rite of passage, copiously illustrated with over 80 exquisite pencil drawings by the author that capture the feel of the period and complement the prose, The Crystal Ballroom is the most moving and eloquent memoir of a cartoonist ever written.

The art work was outstanding. My wife grew up in Rahway and knew some of the characters, the depiction of whom was accurate in both text and illlustration. It was an interesting story of the trials of a teenager in the late 40's.

The coming of age story of a musically-inclined Jersey boy in the late 40's, who gets his big break playing his horn at the Crystal Ballroom in Keansburg... and, in the process, discovering the fickle nature of lust and beauty. Told in the prose of a young man, the book channels deep emotions that every adolescent has felt who ever dreamed of grasping the brass ring of his heart's desires. Packed with anecdotes and characters familiar to all, with historically accurate and graphic depictions of life in NJ in 1946. Emotional, funny, and thought provoking, not to mention a compelling read. More than highly recommended!

                        Book Description

'MIDNIGHT CHAMBERS and CRYSTAL BALLROOMS', a collection of dark poetry and articles, explores a range of human emotions as felt and experienced from one person's standpoint, at once chilling and macabre, yet with elements of beauty and passion taken directly from the soul. Feelings freely expressed are stated honestly and unapologetically and, for better or worse, take no prisoners. This compilation in many ways speaks outward, within the areas of darkness seeking to provide the light of hope and inspiration for others, the intention from one human being reaching out to clearly say: "You are not alone". Product of over one year's output on the highly-successful American website 'Vampire Rave' (www.vampirerave.com), here is contained evocative Gothic poetry with a strong Sixties slant, which is at various times hard, open, loving and immediate. A sock in the guts to the fragile strains of ghostly harpsichord. Welcome to 'MIDNIGHT CHAMBERS and CRYSTAL BALLROOMS'. Enter of your own volition, thrill and chill to the Dark Dance...

Journalists aren't held in the greatest esteem these days. Too many are insiders, value a scoop over all else, or are too cowardly to spurn accepted thought. Not Nat Hentoff. Hentoff is the kind of reporter (and citizen) all reporters should aspire to be--"less interested in 'exclusives,'" as he writes in Speaking Freely, than "in making a difference." Speaking Freely is Hentoff's chronicle of a career's worth of making a difference, writing unexpectedly--for a self-proclaimed Jewish atheist civil-libertarian--about everything from Vietnam and Israel to abortion and John Cardinal O'Connor to the Nation of Islam and the ACLU. Hentoff recalls a Village Voice that presented "a forceful diversity of views" and a New Yorker shaped by revered editor William Shawn. Speaking Freely is an inspiring memoir from a man proud to have been called, by one editor, "a general pain in the ass."

                        Book Description

Included in Speaking Freely are, as Nat Hentoff writes:

"My lives as a radical (according to the FBI); an 'enslaver of women' (according to pro-choicers); a suspiciously unpredictable civil-libertarian (according to the ACLU); a dangerous defender of alleged pornography (according to my friend Catherine MacKinnon); an irrelevant, anachronistic integrationist (according to assorted black nationalists); and, as an editor at the Washington Post once said, not unkindly--'a  general pain in the ass.' "

Continuing the story that began in his widely praised Boston Boy, Nat Hentoff in Speaking Freely guides us through more than forty years of his life in journalism, a career as various as his passions, and follows our social history from the civil rights and antiwar movements to the most incendiary battles (such as abortion) of the present day.

Hentoff first evokes New York in the fifties, when he wrote for the jazz magazine Down Beat and came to know some of the most talented jazzmen of all time--Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Dizzy Gillespie, to name only a few. He looks back to his apprenticeship under George Seldes and I. F. Stone, two unyieldingly independent journalists whom he credits with charting his direction in the field. And he recounts his associations with a wide array of Americans, from Malcolm X, who was a friend, to Louis Farrakhan, who has labeled Hentoff "the Antichrist" ; from Adlai Stevenson to John Cardinal O'Connor; and from the "utterly singular" editor of The New Yorker, William Shawn, to uncelebrated heroes far afield from Manhattan and Washington.

As a staff writer for the Village Voice and a syndicated columnist for the Washington Post, Hentoff has gained a reputation as one of the nation's most respected, uncompromising, and controversial writers on civil liberties and on the difficult issues and wide-ranging forms of injustice manifest in our age.

Written with deep honesty and affection, and rooted in music, politics, and the press, Speaking Freely is a memoir as candid, opinionated, and provocative as any American journalist has ever offered.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars Speak, Notebook.......2003-05-24

In writing his memoirs, a journalist has an advantage over a civilian, in having a record of his life. And where Nat Hentoff's notebooks left off, his FBI files provided items he'd forgotten, such as the name of the haberdashery where, at age 11, he'd had his first job, and some which he'd never known, such as his parents' Russian birthplaces.

A Village Voice and Washington Post columnist, and the author of some 40 non-fiction and fiction books for adults and children, the catholicity of Nat Hentoff's interests and his career of taking gutsy stands have made him an institution in a profession pervaded by mediocrity and conformity.

Hentoff's atheism, his support of trade unions and flag burners, and his quaint faith in school integration that most American blacks no longer believe in make him look like your standard-issue liberal. Yet the same man defended the right of Nazis to march in Skokie, Illinois, opposes abortion, and has fought against a purported "right of privacy" that would allow women to dispose of children born with birth defects. It is no wonder that many of Hentoff's colleagues at the Village Voice have stopped speaking to him.

The sequel to Hentoff's 1987 memoir Boston Boy, which told of his "exuberantly anti-Semitic hometown," Speaking Freely briskly covers his 50-plus years in journalism with a wry, self-deprecating humor that his columns and First Amendment books often lack.

Hentoff enjoyed early success writing on jazz for Down Beat magazine, whose New York office he ran. In 1956, he got fired. It seems he had hired a "black" secretary without getting permission from the home office in Chicago. The magazine, which was devoted to black music, had never hired a black staffer. Ironically, Hentoff reports, "Several years later I found out that the secretary at issue was not black, but Egyptian. Of course, these days, the creators and practitioners of Afrocentricity would rule that, being Egyptian, the new secretary was, of course, black. Either way, I would still have been fired."

Hentoff sketches several poignant portraits of jazz greats. He tells of a 1980s concert at Lincoln Center in Dizzy Gillespie's honor. "I hadn't seen Dizzy...for a few years.... In the hallway, Dizzy was talking with someone, saw me, ran over, and grabbed me in a bear hug. To the man he was talking to, Dizzy, grinning, explained, 'It's like seeing an old broad you used to go with.'" Hentoff comments that "This old broad has seldom been so honored."

Hentoff tells sadly of the deterioration of New York's Village Voice, once as vividly unpredictable as it is now a museum of political correctness, and of his hopes for its reinvigoration under its current editor-in-chief, Don Forst. For the past several years, I have found Hentoff to be the sole reason for reading the Voice.

Hentoff's turn against abortion quarantined him at the virulently pro-abortion Voice. He has subsequently campaigned against all forms of euthanasia. He also attacked the practice of testing pregnant women for HIV for research purposes and then withholding the test results from them-a policy demanded by the AIDS lobby, employing an obscene interpretation of "privacy" rights, which condemned thousands of children and their mothers to terrible, premature deaths. Hentoff compared this practice to the "Tuskegee experiments," in which black men infected with syphilis were left untreated, to die horrible, slow deaths. The ACLU's support of this HIV testing policy led Hentoff to resign from the organization in 1995, after 35 years as a member.

In the "Genghis Khan of the Catholic Church," conservative archbishop John Cardinal O'Connor [alive at the time of original publication of this review], Hentoff sees a kindred spirit. He and O'Connor locked horns over Pope John Paul II's granting of an audience to Kurt Waldheim after his complicity in Nazi war crimes had been exposed. Before Hentoff could complete a second column attacking the Pope and O'Connor, a letter from the latter shut him up: "Now that I have won the argument, let us proceed. You may recall how Belloc ends his Path to Rome: 'So let us love another and laugh. Time passes and we shall soon laugh no longer. Meanwhile, earnest men are at siege upon us all round. So let us laugh and suffer absurdities, for that is only to suffer one another.'"

The defense of an opponent's freedom of belief requires a kind of love, and the embrace of absurdities. In Hentoff's case, the loving and the embracing are done by a warrior journalist.

5 out of 5 stars In the tradition of Orwell.......2001-11-25

Nat Hentoff is a delightful oddity - that old-fashioned leftist who's not afraid to take on the Establishment Left. Thus, small minds to the left of center absolutely hate him - much as they hated Orwell, Camus and de Beauvoir, and for the same reasons: He won't toe the line. (The Right, of course, simply chooses to ignore him ... or more likely can't understand him.)

In this second installment of his ongoing autobiography, Hentoff's love of jazz is again front and center - there has never been a better chronicler of jazz, and if Hentoff's prose is a bit more stilted than his favorite musicians, he still captures that sense of life that jazz embodies.

An unapologetic integrationist, Hentoff is also one of the most color-blind individuals you will ever read.

Reading this book also brings you to a realization that Hentoff opposes abortion for the exact same reason he opposes the death penalty - it is a consistent ethos, even if the Left (such as it is these days) finds itself compelled to try to silence him.

If you despair of the left ever finding its way again, if you feel dismayed by the increasing conformity of American liberals, then read this book.

                        1 out of 5 stars Self-Aggrandizing Apologia.......2001-04-18

In these pages, Mr. Hentoff relentlessly promotes himself, without even attempting to reconcile his contradictory positions. He's the great civil libertarian, yet apparently he believes that women have no civil rights where there own bodies are concerned! He shamelessly flatters the late Cardinal O'Connor, completely distorting the latter's record on gay issues. I used to like Nat Hentoff's writings, but somewhere along the line, he took a wrong turn, and became a fawning sycophant of the right wing.

                        5 out of 5 stars Interesting!.......2000-01-16

This book is a very good account of how Nat Hentoff went from writing about Jazz to civil liberties issues for the Village Voice.

Mr Hentoff is quite a unique individual.

He has been called "the Anti-Christ" by Rev Lewis Farrakhan, "an unpredictable civil libertarian" by the ACLU (which he later resigned from), an "enslaver of women" by supporters of abortion rights (because of his opposition to abortion), a "dangerous defender of alleged pornography" by anti-porn feminists and has even raised the eyebrows of Cardinal John O'Connor because he is Jewish but is also an atheist.

I felt Hentoff gave interesting insights about the issues he wrote about with honesty and affection.

Although, I disagree with his opposition to abortion (he does, however, oppose criminalizing the procedure), opposition to euthenasia and support for mandatory AIDS tests for babies, I thought this book was very well written.

I really enjoyed reading this book. There was quite a bit of good advice concerning wilderness living and survival. Also included interesting tales concerning Brad and Vena Angiers experiences living in the British Columbia wilderness. I found the style of writing to be quite easy to read and the explanations to be easily understandable. Would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in living in the wilderness or just enjoys reading about people who have done it.

From a man's point of view, after hearing the basic idea and theme of Leaving the Wilderness, I didn't think I would enjoy it. So, after buying it for my wife and her not reading it, I picked it up one day, much to my delight, and I could not put it down. Another reviewer said that this is a book that "every woman should read" and I TOTALLY DISAGREE. THIS IS A BOOK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ! Your emotions will range from happiness, sadness, anger, etc., etc. You will love this book, I PROMISE!

                                4 out of 5 stars Still I Rise.......2003-06-10

Author and poet, Tonya Blount unfolds the story of a young woman's journey for self-love and restoration in Leaving The Wilderness. For eleven years, Jordan Baez has endured physical, verbal and mental abuse at the hands of her malicious husband, Franklin. When a night of unbridled passion, precipitated by Franklin's drunken state, evolves into sexual assault, another member of the Baez family is conceived and Jordan's disdain for her husband begins. Torn between hatred for Franklin and love for her children, Jordan must decide if she will remain in a contemptible marriage or abandon Franklin and his callous nature for good.

Tonya Blount has illustrated an unforgettable and emotive female protagonist in Leaving The Wilderness. Ms. Blount's poetic writing style is both fluid and enchanting allowing readers to empathize with the main character. I would have liked to read more about Jordan's rediscovery of self as she mends the broken pieces of her life. Nevertheless, Ms. Blount's debut novel will speak to women in the midst of their wilderness experience and serve as a testimony to those who have been stripped of their self-worth. A must read for men and women alike.

Author :Tonya Blount, Novel: "Leaving the Wilderness"

"Leaving the Wilderness" was ingeniously written It discloses how an abusee overcame many dire impediments and triumphantly rised above it all.
Revenge wasnt the storyline in Blounts novel. Eventhough she battled several diverse worlds: Good verses Evil; Love verses Hate; Emotions verses Spiritual.
She ensured us that her lessons were well erudite. By allowing us to walk candidily with her to that spiritual intercession . Where she discovered she found her place of counterpoise.: Her Lord and Savior!
As a reader , I'd like to applaud and thank Ms.Tonya Blount, for showing myself. That if we keep God first and believe with all our hearts.. That we too, can obviate any stumbling blocks in ones life. While holding steadfast to faith; We too can avoid our pitfalls along the way. But we must believe!
As i conclude with (Psalms 23:4..... "Yea, though i walk through the valley of shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, Your rod and Your staff, will comfort me.)

This novel was great! It made me feel as though I am not alone. I experienced similar circumstances and I used to feel stupid and alone. But through reading this book, I found that I am not the only woman who has experienced the degrading, jealous hatred from a male counterpart. More than anything this book was not just about the abuse but how it was overcome. When you have faith and a firm belief and understanding of a higher power you will always come out on top regardless of what you are going through!! Ms. Blount I can not wait for your next novel. Jordan feels like one of my sister friends!! You go girl.
