The Architecture of Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos.......2002-02-17
The book shows some great drawings with a few photos of the projects. The architecture is dynamic and exciting. The only draw back is the scantness of text and more photos of the projects.

Very well written and demonstrated. Lots of different projects make the book pretty well rounded and a value
Quick and Easy Murals.......2004-10-01
A great book for those who want to start painting on the walls. While if doesn't show a beginner color worksheets on every element it is great for the intermediate to advanced beginner. There are hundreds of step-by-step photos. The projects that take the most painting skill are the borders. Donna shows you how to paint six wall borders using photos showing step by steps. The four wall murals give a great effect and are truly quick and easy. And then she shows two wall treatments that will show you that you never need to use wall paper again. It is so much easier to repaint than to strip wallpaper. For the more advanced or highly motivated painter Donna has included a section on starting you own Mural business. This book shows you can be a do it yourself muralist.

To truly fool the eye, trompe l'oeil painting must display convincing perspective, proper depth of field, and a credible play of light and shadow. Jocelyn Kerr Holding carefully explores these principles and many more, with detailed explanations of all the basic considerations behind the creation of a trompe l'oeil image and the various techniques available for achieving it, including perforating an existing drawing, painting freehand, projecting a photograph, and using photocopies in a decoupage manner. Despite the "quick and easy" promise of the book's title, however, many beginners will be intimidated by the process as presented here, since Holding offers no patterns (other than a small section of architectural motifs for photocopying) and presumes an existing comfort level with the handling of paint and perspective on the part of the reader to achieve, in her words, "a freehand reproduction of reality." But those seeking a decent primer on the art of trompe l'oeil will find much useful information here, along with some nicely rendered eye-fooling images of book- and object-filled shelves, landscape views, and animals. --Amy Handy
Book Description
This primer guides you through materials; preparing surfaces; mixing colors; and the laws of perspective from background to foreground—even an aerial view. “Supplies information on perspective, color, techniques, and architectonic and scenic methods.”—Booklist. “This is a great book for your painting library.”—Decorative Artist’s Workbook.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding how-to guide to decorative painting.......2001-04-29
Quick & Easy Trompe I'Oeil is an outstanding how-to guide to decorative painting on walls, furniture and even bricks and presents easy step-by-step techniques for using the trompe i'oeil technique. A range of examples of pictorial art from all styles, from still life to Surrealistic paintings, provide painters with many different ideas to choose from, while the techniques are easy to follow and duplicate. Color photos pack the presentation.
Fool the Reader.......2001-01-02
Jocelyn Kerr Holding's book is misleading and insulting with it's self-presentation as a"Quick & Easy" how-to book. In her chapter titled "Easy Trompe L'Oeil" She has the nerve to say "With those of you tackling this technique for the first time in mind, I decided to describe six easy projects simple to draw and amusing to do. The "step-by-step" explinations which follow have been written...so they can be carried out without too many dificulites". But her steps are vauge and useless, rarely haveing more than four steps. You can not learn how to paint wood grain or marble in four steps, although marble is presented here in three meaningless steps. So as a learning tool this book is useless. I would recommend instead Trompe L'Oeil Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint by Roberta Gordon-Smith or Painting Murals by Patricia Seligman, for new muralist. However, if you are a skilled artist versed in most forms of Trompe L'oeil, but are looking for classic examples of the technique, there are some lovely examples in this book. I'm keeping my copy as refrence material, which is how it should have been presented.

Beautiful and instructional!.......2001-10-29
Not being particularly artistic, but wanting to tackle some projects to make my home 'mine', I went searching for some books to help. I didn't expect to find such a wonderful book! The instructions are clear, step-by-step and (luckily for me) extremly easy to follow. The illustrations are lovely, and at the same time, very instructional. What I liked most was that the author gave you plenty of ideas and inspiration, so that you could take her instructions and design your own creations - what fun!
Author's Notes.......2000-06-20
My goal with my book Quick & Easy Decorative Painting was to give clear instructions so that beginner could understand, I believe that with the help of the wonderful pictures in this book we have accomplished our goal... The projects in this book are mostly inexpensive items that are easily found in local arts and craft stores. I hope you enjoy this book. Peg

Book Description
"An extremely fascinating study, packed with insights and illumination and astute observation. It is first-rate philosophy--clearheaded, imaginative, sophisticated, and resourceful. And in its historical and technological dimensions, it connects with the 'real world' in ways that are rare in philosophical studies."--Kendall Walton, University of Michigan
"For Patrick Maynard photography is in the first instance a technology for marking surfaces, and from this insight flows the most original sustained analysis and argument yet produced in the history of thinking about the camera and its work. At once analytical and historical, scientific and aesthetic, as lucid and witty as it is learned, The Engine of Visualization spells out the simplest general principles necessary for a clear understanding of what photography--also technology, image, and art--is and does. This is a signal achievement, and a simply lovely book."--Alan Trachtenberg, Yale University
In the first philosophical book wholly about photography, Patrick Maynard dispels some basic, persistent confusions by treating photography as a technology--a way to enhance and filter human power. Once photography is understood as a kind of technology, Maynard argues, insights about technology may be applied to provide the general perspective on photography that has been missing.

Product Description
In the 1910s, in early middle age, Theodore Dreiser, already America's great gritty realist, began to take stock of his crowded, complicated life and of the persons and forces that had shaped it. He embarked upon a multi-volume work he planned to call "A History of Myself," a brutally honest untangling of "the net of flesh and emotion and human relationship into which I was born and which conditioned my early efforts at living." By 1916 he had completed the first volume, Dawn, a chronicle of his poor Midwestern boyhood and a book so candid and sexually explicit that, out of respect for his family's feelings, he delayed its publication for fifteen years. In 1922, he finished the second, Newspaper Days, the story of his literary apprenticeship in the roughneck world of big-city dailies. Together they constitute one of the great American autobiographies, less known perhaps than those of Henry Adams and Ulysses S. Grant but in every way worthy of the same short shelf. This Black Sparrow edition, introduced and annotated by Dreiser scholar T. D. Nostwich, is definitive.
An autobiography of early youth published in 1931, just as the country was entering the darkest days of the Great Depression, Dawn is a major American writer's engrossing effort to understand how he had become the person that he was. It opens in a small house on a dingy street in Terre Haute, Indiana, where the author is born, the ninth of ten children, on August 27, 1871. Central to Dreiser's story is his Czech mother's struggle to keep her family together in the face of chronic poverty and her husband's inability to earn a living. She is all-enduring and all-forgiving, one of Dreiser's triumphs of characterization. The father, a disabled German Catholic millworker, is pitiful, luckless, and powerless to impress his moral authority on his indifferent children, all of whom are magnetized by pleasure and material display. They are the musically talented Paul, a simple-hearted, generous sensualist; the sullen Rome, an amoral wanderer, often in jail, always full of drink and braggadocio; the four sisters, looking only for fun, finery, and handsome moneyed young men; and Theodore, sickly, withdrawn, finding beauty in nature and in books but little solace from his inborn fatalism.
As Professor Nostwich comments, "The conclusions Dreiser drew about the insignificance of his and all human existence goes against the grain of Christian and American optimism but does not alter the fact that Dawn is a uniquely American book. It is the fullest, truest account we have of what it was like to grow up poor in the American Midwest in the late nineteenth century, an age of unsettling social and moral change. It is the story of an idling but insatiably curious, sensuous, and sensual youth's effort to know himself and find his place in a rigidly moralistic and rampantly materialistic society, one that prized the go-getter but had little use for the dreamer."
Customer Reviews:
read this from dusk till d-d-dawn.......2006-02-01
Dreiser follows such a simple structure. First, the dreamy, hypnotic recurrent images of early childhood, that only melted into perspective years later. Second, the glory of sexual awakening, mixed with the whitewater current of ambition, shuffling like white noise into his consciousness only once he tunes his ears to listen.
To the details. Dreiser loved his mother, in a way that may have swung past the platonic, and certainly shaped his female ideal. She does seem an ideal parent, with her selfless love, endless devotion in hard work, and support regardless of the wayward tendencies of her iconoclastic brood. His father seems little more than a hollowed out Jesus enthusiast, who, following the personal disaster that surely damaged his brain, emptily follows Christ's lead by punishing his children for not being religious enough.
Dreiser himself came of age by losing it to the immigrant bakery owner's daughter, an idle miscreant long forgotten outside these pages. Dreiser was bound by two diametrically opposed desires - one for sex, the other for love, and as a wise man once said, these rarely overlap, especially for Dreiser in his early youth. His platonic ideal is the shy, frumpy type, while he can't help but be lured in by the pretty ones. His sex complex keeps him from many a lay, which he overcomes by ravishing a young Italian waywardess.
Poe once said something like "Any man who chooses to tell about his life the way it really is will change the world forever, but no one has the courage to do it." Dreiser comes close, though I doubt this has stood much ground the test of time. I was referred to it by one of Fitzgerald's early characters. Dreiser doesn't hesitate to wag his finger at himself, and never, ever makes me wish not to have had the golden opportunity to join him for lunch of a foggy Tuesday.
Dreiser On Dreiser Is Still Dry, Sir........2001-08-30
Although he published this volume (second after Newspaper Days, chronologically), Dreiser intended Dawn to be the first of four autobiographies, each covering approximately 20 years of his life. This confirms Dreiser's ambition, but doesn't place this book in the prize category of great autobiographical works. For all of his professed candor, Dreiser still skirts personal truths for the protocol, and his sentences wind and ramble and repeat like an electric train on contorted tracks.
If you liked Sister Carrie and some of his other longer fictions, this extra reading may be helpful, but if you want to go for the "red meat" of Dreiser's life, I'd encourage a reading of his American Notebooks--his journals, published after his death and never really intended for publication. In them, boy oh boy, does the real Dreiser sans facade emerge.
Incredible Memoir Writing.......2001-08-02
"Dawn" may be stronger than Dreiser's fiction, which is saying a good deal. He shows a remarkable memory and attention to detail. I am admittedly biased because I identified so closely with his experiences as a child, youth, and adult, but the scenes in this volume are well drawn and he overcomes his sometimes florid style and difficulties with fluid language well here. Along with "Newspaper Days," one gets an intimate look at the life of this talented and important author.

Book Description
This case study is the result of a unique collaboration between a social historian and a cognitive scientist. It examines the enigmatic case of Hugh Blair, an eighteenth century Scottish 'laird' or landowner, whose arranged marriage was annulled on the grounds of his mental incapacity. Through an in-depth study of the evidence surrounding the case, the authors conclude that Blair, who was classed at the time as a 'fool', was in fact autistic.Writing in a lively and engaging style, the authors draw together witness statements from court records with a wide range of other documentation to set the sociohistoric scene for the case. This provides a fascinating context to which the latest theories on autism are applied. This book will not only intrigue both historians and psychologists but will also appeal to a wider audience for its study of this compelling and deeply affecting human story.
