Book Description
These twenty-two essays provide a rich forum for assessing the tenets, accomplishments, and limits of modernism in landscape architecture, and for formulating ideas about possible directions for the future of the discipline. Modern Landscape Architecture brings together seminal articles from the 1930s and 1940s by Garrett Eckbo, Dan Kiley, James Rose, Fletcher Steele, and Christopher Tunnard, while contemporary writers and designers such as Pierce Lewis, Catherine Howett, John Dixon Hunt, Peter Walker, and Martha Schwartz examine the historical and cultural framework within which modern landscape designers have worked.

Understanding modern garden design.......2007-01-13
This book is a rare find since it is a collection of articles which help explain the origins of the Modern Garden . Through it you can trace the formation of midcentury design . Through it you can learn what Modernist garden designers were reacting to in traditional garden design and architecture , and discover how influential Landscape Architects like Thomas Church and James C.Rose used this new "freedom". The book is witty and the viewpoints are diverse. It should be required reading if you are training as a garden designer or a Landscape Architect in part because it a corrective to the usual the usual theoretical approaches .
Lagging behind architecture, but finally catching up........1999-09-29
The editor, Marc Treib, said in the introduction that ideas in the field of landscape architecture is 15 years behind architecture(and architure is behind art for another 15 years). But for the history of modernism, landscape architecture seemed to be behind architecture for several decades. Finally, landscape architecture has its own history. This book can be read along with "Invisible Gardens" (MIT Press, 1994)written by art critics Melaine Simo and landscape architect Peter Walker. That would makes a general picture of what modernism in landscape architecture is like.
But what happened after modernism? For those who really interested in the subject of modernism/postmodernism in landscape architecture, i suggest them to read essays in Landscape Journal, e.g "Cubist space, Volumetric space, and Landscape Architecture" by Patrick M. Condon(spring, 1988),who called for a transition of design paradigms of landscape architecture in the late 20th century ; or "Form, Meaning, and Expression in Landscape Architecture" by Laurie Olin, who had criticized some important classical, modern and contemporary landscape architectural works. That would makes a more comprehensive and in-depth exploration in the changing ideas of landscape architecture. It's kind of pity that "a critical review" is just an anthology of pappers in one single symposium(and some historical documents) that some important concepts like Condon's were elimated. So a more coherent and critical history of modern(even 20th century) landscape architecture is still expectative.

Old school keeping it simple still works........2006-04-11
This volume is typical of any published by MAP reprints and revised editions bring the way it was done for the hobbist. In the day. Before everything had to have a digital read out/computer controlled what ever. This gives enough information to a shop person with some experience. The knowledege to cast some small parts, make the pattern and a furnace. By far there are more numerous books out there, with more info and flashier layout. But they could not give you the basic knowledge in 8 chapters. In the ninth chapter he goes over a small scale cupola drop bottom furnance. If for nothing else the explantion of how it operates. The drawings are old school text book style, clear line drawings with notation. the few B&W photos are clear enough to see what they wanted you to. For some one who wants an idea of how to do it, for the price this is the one. I own it. and It was a light couple hour read.

Shonen Jump Series 1 Books.......2007-01-04
This was a gift for our son for Christmas! It was great he has read most all of them and now wants most of the series.
Shonen Jump Manga Magic.......2005-11-09
This is easily the best collection of Americanized manga out. As most know, Shonen Jump was at one time a Japanese exclusive magazine that made its hop across the Pacific in 2003 for American fans to enjoy. Since that moment, it's become the best in manga and now contains a majority of the manga juggernauts.
This collection is a great start for those of you who are interested in reading manga, or for those of you who missed out on some of the earlier issues of Shonen Jump and want to catch up on what's going on. It also has the beginnings to the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z mangas, which can't be found in Shonen Jump.
Below is a listing of the manga in this box, as well as a small description of each:
(1) Dragon Ball: This is the start of the Dragon Ball world. It explains the origins of Goku and his relationship with the Dragon Balls.
(2) Dragon Ball Z: The beginning of one of the greatest animes ever in its purest form. Unpolluted with minutes-long shouting and infested with excellent action and story, this details the story of Goku as a father and a husband, as well as following some of the other favorites of the Dragon Ball world.
(3) Naruto: Probably the best in Shonen Jump, Naruto is a tale of a boy fox-demon who wants nothing more than to earn his place in the world, and does so by training to become a ninja, despite the mistrust directed at him by some of his teacher and the hatred he receives from his fellow students.
(4) One Piece: A boy eats the mysterious Devil Fruit at a young age, making his body into rubber and also cursing his body: should he ever fall into water, he would sink instantly to the bottom. Despite that, he wants nothing more than to be the pirate king of a world of oceans.
(5) Shaman King: Yoh, a boy who can not only see ghosts but control them, comes to Tokyo to train to become a powerful shaman in the hopes that one day he'll win the title of Shaman King.
(6) Yu-Gi-Oh!: A story of constant morals and themes, it details a young, pint-sized, pointy-haired boy's struggles with a mysterious puzzle/necklace that grants him dark super powers as well as an alter-ego.
(7) YuYu Hakusho: A juvenile delinquent dies saving a child and finds out that his next was entirely unexpected and therefore gains a chance to come back to life. What he later finds out is coming back to life also makes him a spirit detective.

This pack is totaly awsome! If your obsessed about anime than this is the thing for you! I collect and read Shonen Jump magazine, and I kept getting curious about how all the stories had started. So I got this and it answered all my questions.

Dragonball #19, My Review.......2003-03-10
This book is really cool. If I had to put it in a category, I'd say it's a drama/comedy. A really cool part is when Vegeta kills Nappa. These mangas use the original names too. Instead of Krillin it's Kururin. Instead of Chiaozu it's Chaozu. Instea of Tien Shinhan it's Tenshinhan, and the funniest of all instead of Ox King, it's Gyu Mayo! This manga is good stuff!
Dragon Ball Z, Excelent.......2001-03-02
If your into comics/manga then put Dragon Ball Z at thetop of your list! Ihave benn a fan of DBZ for around two years and can say I've tried a thousand tiimes to trey and do the awsome martial arts moves they do. This book DBZ Vol.3 is excellent. It covers the battle between Goku vs Nappa and Vegeta. I would suggest reading the first book to get a fair idea of what is going on, follow the story from when Goku fghts his alien brother Raditz to when he fghts the almighty Mr Buu or Buu. 10 out 10
Book Description
Here comes another Dragon Ball Z adventure, currently the number one show on the Cartoon Network. As the battle of Namek turns the entire planet into a fireball, Goku shows mercy to his opponent Freeza; but the would-be ruler of the universe is ungrateful. Awaiting Goku's return to Earth, the heroes are shocked to find Freeza's spaceship hurtling toward them, with the evildoer vowing to destroy the planet! Meanwhile, the mysterious warrior Trunks appears from the future, with an alarming message!
Customer Reviews:
Jared's review.......2006-03-22
I enjoyed this book, but thought it could be a little bit longer. I liked the part where Freeza got sliced up by his own energy disk. The best warrior in the universe did suicide!!! It was fun reading for any Dragon Ball Z fans.
First Appearance of the BEST DBZ character.......2005-01-17
Freeza has escaped Namek and is coming to Earth. With Goku not back from Namek yet, the Z-fighters know that things are hopeless, yet they decide to die fighting. Our heroes are in more trouble than they thought. Another power, strong like Freeza's is coming to earth. It is Freeza's father, King Cold. Will Goku come back to a planet riddled with destruction?
As the Z-fighters believe that it is truly hopeless now, a mysterious boy wearing a Capsule Corporation jacket comes from nowhere to challenge Freeza and King Cold. What is he thinking? The only way he can have a chance is by turning into a Super Saiyan, and there is no way that can happen. Whoops. Spoke too soon. Trunks has turned into a Super Saiyan. As the heroes rejoice to the defeat of the evil in the universe, it is cut short by the boy's prediction of doom. The Red Ribbon Androids want revenge against Goku for stopping the plans for world domination held by the Red Ribbon Army (see Dragon Ball 5-8).
Can three years of training be enough to stop the Androids that destroyed Trunks' timeline?
#12 lives up to the name Dragonball Z.......2004-07-16
This book,(like the other 11 before it) is amazing. However their is one bad thing about this book... it's the last one that I need to complete my set because after this book, all of the rest of them are in shonen jump (which I also highly recommend). So now that I have 1-12 I have decided to start reading dragonball. If Dragonball is ANYTHING like the Dragonball Z manga then it must be amazing. All there is else to say is congratulations Akira Toriyama for such an amazing creation!
DBZ #12 is the best!.......2003-10-20
This might be my favorite DBZ manga yet since Trunks is my favorite character. It starts when Freiza's gets cut in half and Goku nearly escapes Planet Nameks distruction. After that Frezia appears with King Cold. Just in time Trunks shows up and destroys Freiza and his father. Goku comes back and Trunks tells him that he came from the future and about the androids. Read it! The manga is much better than the TV show.
He's heeeeerrrrrrreeeeeee!.......2003-09-14
Mirai no Trunks, or Future Trunks, shows up in the new DBZ volume, making the coolest character debut in any anime or manga in existence! The Frieza saga finally ends, and the Androids/Cell saga begin with this volume, as Trunks gives Goku a warning of danger(ps, that's also the title of a DBZ song). So, the Z-senshi, including Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Chaozu, who all come back from the dead in this volume, train for three years. What will they face?! Will the training be enough? Find out, as the sequel to the original DB Red Ribbon Army story begins!
Book Description
There are guides to every aspect and every angle of parenthood-from prenatal to post-college-yet none tells us what couples really and truly feel once confronted with the awesome power of Nature's Course. The Three of Us does.Seasoned travelers, successful professionals, Joanna Coles and Peter Godwin arrived in Manhattan ready to make it their oyster-she to be the New York correspondent for a major British newspaper, he to pursue his prize-winning career as a writer and journalist. Of course they were self-absorbed; why come to New York, if not to explore every avenue of self-interest? The news that Joanna is pregnant, however, causes a massive shift in paradigm. Suddenly they are launched unsteadily but irrevocably toward an altogether new New World.Like a series of mental ultrasounds, The Three of Us consists of alternating diary entries in which, day by day and month by month, Peter and Joanna navigate the uncharted waters of impending parenthood. There is much to discuss-the pros and cons of raising a child in a neighborhood frequented by transvestite prostitutes, for example-yet their reactions are not always on the same page; male and female panic about the Joyous Event, as we learn, can differ sharply. But every parent-to-be, every parent-that-is, will recognize and rejoice in the wonderful, terrible, and sometimes hilarious anxieties that attend the building of a nest. The Three of Us is a candid, refreshing, and reaffirming memoir about coming to terms with a new life.

A different type of co-existance.......2007-01-02
I've just finished this book, and as a first time mother to be in her 30's (like Joanna) , and an Ex-Rhodesian now living in the U.S. (like Peter), I found it a very interesting read. I enjoy Peter's writing a lot - this book was very different from his usual style. I was mildly uncomfortable that both Peter and Joanna seem to be very critical of everyone they meet or know - I'd feel like I was under a microscope if I had to meet them in real life. They also seem miserable a lot of the time, no matter where they go. To read their criticisms of people and places was amusing in the beginning, because I also have a dry sense of humor, but by the time I'd finished the book I was left with a sense of unease - these two don't seem very happy with each other or their life choices. Also too much 'name dropping' - that irritated me - I don't care what Puff Daddy does with his free time. I am looking forward to reading Peter's new book though, if it's as good as Mukiwa I won't be dissapointed.
Loved it!.......2006-04-05
Great to read this humourous account of pregnancy. The honest male perspective is refreshing. An easy, gentle pregrancy diary-like story, which leaves the reader wishing Joanna, Peter and their precious son, Thomas, well.
Intereresting concept but story was too disappointing.......2001-06-24
Maybe I didn't get it since I am not a New Yorker. I don't really care that this couple wasn't married, but the lack of love between them was such a turnoff. Peter seemed to have a hard time believing that he had something to do with the pregnancy at all...he kept saying how he was being dragged to doctors and forced to do this and that....My conclusion is that not all writers should write....
Bridget Jones for Smug Marrieds!.......2001-04-30
Joanna and Peter are far from the 'smug marrieds' Helen Fielding talks about but they are just as engaging and enjoyable as Bridget Jones. Their writing makes you feel like one of their best friends. They share their daily observations on pregnancy and impending parenthood with honesty and wit.
Read it and then share with all your friends!
The Experiences of Aliens in New York.......2000-12-27
The authors have managed to capture the bizarre nuances of daily life in New York while overlaying this with the difficulties and emotions attached to a first pregnancy. As resident aliens, my wife and I have recently been dealing with the similar issues associated with the upcoming birth of our first child.
This light hearted look at the processes required to give birth in the New York also provided us with forwarning of the costs, bureaucracy and personalities that are inevitably encountered along the way.
