Modern furniture, with its clean lines and pure shapes, has its own cachet. Dating from the 1920s to the mid-1960s, it represents several stages and sources of development: Marcel Breuer, who created tubular steel for chairs, tables, stools, and sofas in the 1920s; Gilbert Rhode and Russel Wright, who designed maple and birch furniture with sweeping, aerodynamic lines for Heywood-Wakefield in the 1930s; Bruno Mathsson and Alvar Aalto, who used blond birch plywood and heat-molding techniques to produce graceful furniture in the late 1930s; and architects and industrial designers who made goods with molded plastics, laminates, aluminum, and stainless-steel after World War II. By profiling the interiors of 14 homeowners, New Classic Style shows how to mix these pieces with traditional furnishings. Strategies include combining shapes to achieve harmony, using color to unify diverse furnishings, and contrasting the old and new. The results are dramatic, exciting, and comfortable. The book also explains key furniture shapes and important figures from each period in design history.

This is a great book if you are looking for new ideas for your home and you don't want to spend a fortune. Also a great book if you want to NOT do what everyone else is doing!
An exciting book.......2003-03-20
I can't think when a new decorating book excited me as much as this one. I buy a lot of decorating books, but New Classic Style is so chic yet so helpful all at the same time. The premise, which is carried out stylishly by the photos, involves mixing classic furnishings from all eras and genres to create "personal" style. The book is so what I'm all about and what I see my friends doing. I've never seen a book on how to create your own mix before.

"Beyond minimalism there is a more ornamental approach to modern interiors." This statement couldn't be more true and this book is a great guide on navigating the marriage of the contrasting styles. I've often felt that contemporary design was visually a work of art that was cold, but when one chooses the perfect peices it can lead to the most accurate embodiment of personal style.

This book was recommended by a friend.
I ordered it and was caught from the very first story. Warner's varied list of stories and subjects defies definition. His short fiction is as imaginative and inventive as any by Harlan Ellison.
I've not seen anything published by Warner before, but look forward to his next volume.

Beyond Documentary.......2005-02-10
You have to agree completely with the basic thesis of "Dynamic Wildlife Photography". Readily available modern camera equipment makes it easy for anyone who cares to make a technically perfect picture of an animal. Advances in travel allow photographers to go anywhere to photograph even the rarest of animals. As a result viewers have become accustomed to seeing good wildlife pictures. As a further result, to get viewers' attentions, photographers have to go beyond merely documenting an animal.
The authors suggest ways to accomplish this. Among other things they advise using unusual lighting and eye-catching composition, capturing behavior, and learning and using whatever is special about your subject. They advise incorporating weather into the your pictures and capturing the moods of animals, even at the risk of anthropomorphizing them. This book is all about composition.
It's all good advice, but I have to confess, other than so clearly articulating the premise, there's nothing that hasn't appeared in other books on wildlife photography. Like the documentary pictures described by the authors, nothing separates this book from the crowd. I certainly had more fun reading Moose Peterson's "Guide to Wildlife Photography: Conventional and Digital Techniques" where his discussion of making pictures "pop" was similar to the Illg's ideas. I wondered if this book was meant primarily as a showcase for the authors' photographs. And while these pictures are attractive and interesting, I'm not sure that they all reached the level to which the authors aspire.
There is no discussion of technique in this book, except to the extent that it impacts upon composition. That's not necessarily bad, but it means that the book is limited in what it discusses. Experienced wildlife photographers who are looking to take their work to the next level may find something here to think about. People new to wildlife photography will be better served by a book like the late Bill Silliker, Jr.'s "The Master Guide for Wildlife Photographers".

The straight forward, practical style of the 88 Secrets continues! No lengthy rehashing of confusing theories, just a clear, simple format. In particular, the explanation of exposure is one of the best I have read-direct, clear and practical. In addition, the points on composition are good reminders that can be easily forgotten during the excitement of the shoot. Furthermore, this book is a great resource for your personal practice sessions ( a time to practice technique to improve the craft).

I am trying to understand why anyone wouldn't like this book? Then I realized, its a person who doesn't support the notion of photographing animals in zoos, game farms, parks, etc. Other than the crusaders who don't think we should have zoos, everyone else will enjoy this book. It's packed full of detail. The tips on exposure, equipment, lighting and metering offer some of the best explanations I have ever seen.
I have been studying photography for three years now and bought this book to learn more about photographing animals. It gave me tips I could use at my local zoo with great effect. I saw an immediate improvement in my photos after reading 88 Secrets to Wildlife Photography.
Ignore the crusaders and buy this book. It's affordable, easy to read and packed with lots of great secrets!

If you want to get an idea of the types of animals that are available to photograph at the Triple D Game Farm, then buy this book. If you have hopes of learning anything from this book, pass it up. The only thing one learns from this book is that you wasted your money.
Another great book in the 88 secrets series.......2005-12-30
I already own the other books in the 88 secrets series, and this one is a great addition to the collection. It gives you all that you need to know for great wildlife photography - techniques, locations, composition, equipment. I really like the way the 88 secrets series is laid out - you can quickly find answers to specific questions and is an easy read. Keep 'em coming!
