Book Description

Long known for her expertise in log construction, Robbin Obomsawin shakes things up in her newest book The Not So Log Cabin, which looks at how to incorporate simple log elements into any home. A fresh take on a favorite architectural style, The Not So Log Cabin combines log building with conventional construction to create a new hybrid called log-element building. It is an easy way to get the "log look" while using fewer natural resources. Log-element building ensures a unique home, because it can reflect traditional styles like Adirondack, Southwestern, or Western, depending on the desire of the builder or owner. Complete with original blueprints for log-element building, The Not So Log Cabin is a great idea book for building a not-so-ordinary log home. Robbin Obomsawin is the construction manager and general contractor for Beaver Creek Log Homes. She combines over twenty years of log-joinery experience with her knowledge of conventional construction, and has served as vice president of the American/Canadian Log Builders' Association for Handcrafters. She is the author of Small Log Homes and Best Log Home Plans. She lives in Westdale, New York.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing.......2003-08-19

This sounded like a cool book idea, and I love cabins and log homes, so I ordered it. The photos are very disappointing. The homes are not the quality I expected. The book has a very regional, western look to it, which is a shame considering the fact that interesting and varied log homes can be found from coast to coast. They should have called this WESTERN LOG HOMES.

Suggestions for adding extra eye-catching touches to a log home and full-color photographs fill the pages of this superbly presented compendium, which is so vibrant and lavish that it is great fun to simply page through.

2 out of 5 stars Don't look here for too much advice.......2003-07-08

This was a short, marginally enjoyable account of how a single woman served as the lead contractor and general foreman of the construction of a very small log home in the woods. Fairly well written, the author describes an uncanny series of setbacks that makes you wonder whether or not at least some of the problems were imagined. Problems with the moving trucks, architect, log producer, truck driver, every subcontractor, building inspector, insulation manufacturer, stove manufacturer and stove salesman, lawyer problems and even a problem with a delivery man who "hit" on her makes me think I've read a manifesto of a "drama queen". Not very informative from a "how to" perspective, there is some value in reading this from an entertainment perspective and as a guide to potential problems with the process of building your own home.

4 out of 5 stars great historical fun.......2006-02-12

Expectations are everything for this book. So, be prepared: Do not expect a sumptious coffee table book of gorgeous prints. This book assembles a diverse collection of Playbills and "heralds"(advertising for new or then current plays stuck in the programs), finding common themes in the diversity. It is more a collection of historically interesting artwork with sidebar comments on marketing and production notes. I wouldn't say that the artwork rises to the level of "brilliance", but many of them are very clever and ,again, from an historical perspective, very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars great book , fun to see history through the posters.......2005-04-30

Nice visuals, good research, very well done. I dont what the other reviewer's expecations were but I was most satisfied and wanted to offer another perspective.

1 out of 5 stars Not much to see!.......2005-01-27

This book illustrations have a certain spartan appeal, like charles atlas ads in back of comic books. The lackluster design of about 80% of this artwork is really sad although it does add another piece to bway history for which the normally fabulous Chronicle books should be commended. The captions are also uninspired and sparse ,there is just no joy in this presentation,a missed chance to do something really worth having.I would buy it but will wait til it is remaindered, sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Great to see this groundbreaking work collected again, and the greenies fighting each others. I can remember many panels of this excellent artwork. You can't have too much of guys in tight green outfits, fighting each other. Although one of the major confrontations is actually out of costume, topless, too, for the female fans. Just excellent work all around here.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT STORYTELLING BUT AWFULLY LIBERAL.......1999-07-12

I love Denny O'Neil's writing when he sticks to super-heroes fighting super-villians, but he took an awfully liberal views on the issues. I bought the book none the less, and I would buy it again, but he made everyone who was homeless or a junky extemely innocent. Some of those people did get there because of their own actions not the government or evil landlords. As for Neal Adams, simply awesome. I love his pencils. anyone who likes his stuff should check out any work but the current writer and artist on X-MEN, ALAN DAVIS. If you find this book at a book or comic shop, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Classic comic book stories with real, social issues........1999-03-06

Hard-Traveling Heroes: The Green Lantern/Green Arrow Collection Volume 1 reprints Green Lantern (second series) #76-82, the infamous team-up of Green Lantern & Green Arrow from the early 1970s by writer Denny O'Neil and artist Neal Adams, the classic stories that changed the way comic books were told. Dennis O'Neil wrote stories that dealt with social issues like racism, bigotry, cults, etc. added with the superhero elements of comic books. Great artwork provided by artist supreme Neal Adams, one of the best in the comic book industry. His artwork was realistic, making these stories more three dimensional. Green Lantern and Green Arrow travel the country encountering these problems. It was these stories that made what comic books are today, no longer just for kids. These stories would also influence several writers and artists of today's comic book industry.

                      Book Description

Nicholas Daniloff's arrest by the KGB in the fall of 1986 made headlines around the world, but the roots of that story ran deeper than anyone knew. Daniloff's imprisonment was in fact an echo of his family's past, for his great-great grandfather, Alexander Frolov, was also a prisoner of the Russian state. In this rich and absorbing book, Daniloff weaves a double narrative that vividly brings two worlds to life: yesterday's Russia and today's Soviet Union.

At a time when Americans are especially curious about the Soviet Union, Nicholas Daniloff offers a unique and deeply personal book about his long experience with that still-mysterious nation. "Two lives, One Russia" reads like fiction, but its twin stories are true, revealing, and always compelling.

                      Customer Reviews:

                      5 out of 5 stars I read this book once a year.......2006-01-21

Keep in mind, that I am a complete Russophile. I studied Russian for two years, spent months in Russia in the 90s. So this book touches me in ways that are personal. I read this book every few years, and I'm starting to think my original copy is wearing thin.

This book is divided into two storylines that weave a united theme. The first part is an a account of the author's own detention and interrogation under the time of Gorbachev leadership. Nicholas Daniloff was the Soviet reporter for US News & World Report in the 1980's. He was one day grabbed of the street and what follows is an account with as much intrigue as a Robert Ludlum novel. It hits hard, those who lived during the Cold War of the 80's.

The second story line is that of the author's investigating and eventually unraveling of the story of his Great-great-great grandfather who was a minor member in the Decembrist revolt in 1825. Daniloff's investigation of the history of his ancestor shows the warm nature of Russians and the power of History that survived through communist Russia. When Daniloff, tells the account of his Great-great-great grandfather, it brings up images of Tolstoy.

All in all, this book brings an amazing account of the Russian people in two periods of oppression. The warm nature of Russians has always been from within, and this book shows that.

Give this book a try, if you love great non-fiction stories, this one should be at the top of your list.

Note: I contacted Nicholas Daniloff via email a few years ago, to tell him how much I loved this book. He actually replied and took to heart the fact that his and his ancestor's story meant so much to someone.

There came to them out of the fog--seemingly from a great distance--the sound of a laugh, a low, deliberate, soulless laugh which had no more of joy than that of a hyena night-prowling in the desert; a laugh that rose by slow gradation, louder and louder, clearer, more distinct and terrible, until it seemed barely outside the narrow circle of their vision; a laugh so unnatural, so unhuman, so devilish, that it filled those hardy man-hunters with a sense of dread unspeakable!

                                      Book Description

Joe didn't have much of a life in high school. Didn't date much, had a lousy job as a security guard, and by the time he started college in Chicago he was still living at home, and going crazy. But then things changed one day, and he met a new friend. Big Ralph was a seemingly kind, patient, and generous man who took an instant liking to young Joe. Over a short period of time, Joe turned 21, and his new friend guided him into the wild exciting world of the 90's dance club scenes, booze, and a whole new world of meeting women. In spite of his booming social life, Joe tries very hard to become a Police Officer, but it just doesn't seem to be as easy as he thought. And in the meantime, he's still going crazy living at home with his parents, who are gently trying to ease him out into the adult world. Ralph notices this, and just when his friend is about to move to Florida to pursue a career there away from his family and friends in Chicago, he makes Joe an offer he can't refuse.... He offers to let Joe move into the upper half of his home, which is a separate apartment. At first, Joe thinks this offer is too good to be true. His own private apartment, a nice neighborhood, great neighbors, only 200 dollars a month for rent, and best of all, the "perfect landlord" living downstairs. Well, Joe quickly learns that there's no such thing as the perfect landlord! Shortly after moving into his new apartment to start his new life, Joe begins to notice that his friend and landlord Big Ralph is not the person that he thought he knew. Anger, laziness, greed and jealousy suddenly yield what kind of person Ralph really is. Worse yet, Joe slowly realizes that he is no longer Ralph's friend or tenant.....He has unknowingly become his caregiver. Ralph's family and neighbors try to warn Joe about what he has gotten into, but by that time it's too late. It becomes a carnival of chaos and twisted humor as tenant declares war on the landlord! But Big Ralph doesn't back down, and bombards Joe with requests for some rather unusual "favors" that make Joe wish he had never moved in!

                                      4 out of 5 stars I about died laughing!.......2005-04-18

I myself used to have a goofy landlord, so the title of Mr. Fougerousse's book caught my attention right away. Although in comparison, I seriously don't see how the main character in this hilarious story actually LIVED with that landlord! Ugggg!
Can You Do Me a Favor was a real treat to read. I was laughing everytime I turned the page. It does contain some harsh language and some pretty NASTY moments (wait till ya read about the landlords dog's certain eating habits....YUCK!!)
The plot is about a young man who is in College and studying to be a cop, but he wants to get a place of his own since he still lives at home. Mr. Fougerousse also goes into some very funny moments about the the 90's bar/club scenes with awesome results.
Joe (the main character based after the author) meets this cousin of his friend (his friends name is The Dummy?? Who was the dummy that moved in with this guy?? lol) named big Ralph. Well, Joe ends up moving into the apartment above Ralph's house and for a while, everything seems to be going pretty well for Joe. He's got a good job, and a nice place to live. Things change quickly, and go downhill real quick the more he gets to know his nasty landlord! From cleaning up the landlords yard, to taking care of a dog on a nauseating diet!
Mr. Fougerousse really lets us get to know each character, and we even learn to love Big Ralph, although sometimes he's just askin for a bashin! I'm 28 years old, and this kind of story is right up my alley. I've been through the fun times of the 90's dance clubs, picking up chicks, and even having to deal with a horrible landlord of my own! I can TOTALY see this book being turned into a movie someday! It's a lot like Eurotrip meets American Pie or I could totaly see Adam Sandler in this movie with his regulars.
But as far as the book goes, it's hilarious! I hope Foug has more where this came from!

                                      Book Description

What, in fact, do people really mean when they cry, "How can God allow such things?" When uttered angrily in a moment of desperation, perhaps it is a declaration of blame. Expressed as a plea for help it, at the very least, reveals our confusion in the midst of disaster. When this question is uttered, does it reveal that intuitively we sense that each experience, whether painful or pleasant, is meant to serve a deeper purpose than we're willing to recognize?

Perhaps most importantly, the question, How can God allow such things? brings to light our desire to understand how and why misfortune strikes. This wanting to understand the "hows" and "whys" of our misfortunes catapults us into our personal and collective mission as human beings. If we are not to abdicate all responsibility to an elusive God, who then is responsible?

In his book How Can God Allow Such Things?, Richard Steinpach explains the true nature of "response-ability." He leads us to an appreciation of the unity of the spiritual and material world, and beyond man's pivotal role within it as an intelligent and responsible creature. By applying the basic Laws of Nature, Richard Steinpach successfully brings together two worlds that have remained separated until now: the material world of science and the ethereal world of the spirit. If people truly understood how the Natural Laws, as explained by Steinpach, underpin everything spiritual and scientific, they would dramatically change how they live.

As the architects of our own destiny, we can determine for ourselves--must determine for ourselves, in fact--whether or not we will use this brief time granted us on earth, to paraphrase noted statesman Vaclav Havel, in order to "crumble and decay, or to arise from the rubble." Dr. Steinpach shows how we are responsible not only to ourselves but also to a Higher Order in Creation Whose all encompassing and awe-inspiring impartiality and perfection must bring every serious observer to a genuine recognition of God.

With Steinpach's insight, we need never despairingly cry, "How can God allow such things?" again, for, as the author points out, the real question is, "How can man allow such things?"

The simple logic of this book is astounding. In clear and direct words, Dr. Steinpach leads the reader to a new understanding of the causes and effects that underlie all happenings in creation. A stunning book for all, but especially for those struggling with unhappy or tragic circumstances!
