Not for you.......2004-12-06

This book tells you that is almost imposible to do architectural photography without a view camera. If you are thinking of becoming an architectural photographer and you don't have the money to get a view camera this book is not for you. I am working with an excellent professional architectural photographer who does most of his asignments in digital photography. This book gives you very little information regarding to that. Not a source of inspiration for me.

Okay, but a bit cursory.......2004-11-03

I'm an architect and a beginner photographer and was looking for a good, comprehensive book on architectural photography so I could photograph my jobs for my portfolio. This book has a lot of good technical information, but deviates from the topic many times (in my opinion). For example, there's a sections on the architectural history, the role of the architect, aesthetics in architecture, etc. I don't need this and I think this is been covered extensively in other books. I don't mind if this information is there, but the topics covered could have been given more depth and examples, rather than spending time on tangential subjects.

Mostly, I bought this book because I need to understand the intricacies of lighting interior spaces to get the most beautiful photograph I can. Just when the chapter on lighting was getting good, the author recommends the reader buy his other book "Professional Interior Photography" for more information -- bummer.

So, for someone interested in reading about the subject and related areas, this seems like a good book. For someone like me looking an in-depth book only on architectural photography, I'd recommend to keep looking.

A Good Technical Primer.......2001-08-19

If you're interested in architectural photography as a profession, you will probably gain some valuable insights from this book. While few of the photographic examples used are what I would call "stunning", the author provides a very methodical and thorough approach to learning the craft. And while certainly not a how-to book for inexperienced photographers, Harris has done a good job of defining the issues and explaining the technical solutions that are inherent to architectural photography.

Everything of importance is explained, from film selection and filtering, to complex exposure formulas and specialized equipment.

A warning though: if you don't have a basic understanding of Geometry, you might have trouble applying some of the concepts in this book (and thus trouble producing attractive architectural photographs). More than any other genre of photography, architectural photography is a thinking man (and woman's) game. You don't "seek out" or "sense" a beautiful photograph so much as carefully manufacture them.

A "must-read" book for aspiring architectural photographers!.......1999-06-18

Professional Architectural Photography by Michael Harris is a wonderfully informative and beautifully illustrated "must-read" book for any photographer who desires to shoot the interiors and exteriors of buildings. The book is easy to read, concise and to the point, and offers a wealth of information detailing with the art and science of architectural photography. As a professional photographer and photography instructor, I had always desired to try my hand, so to speak, at capturing on film the architectural beauty of historically significant buildings. After reading this book, I can't wait to go out and shoot my own architectural photographs. In fact, I was so motivated by the way the author presented the information contained in the book that I went out a couple weeks later and bought a 4" x 5" large-format view Camera. Trust me! If you think you'd like to dabble in architectural photography, invest in this book. You'll be glad you did! Even if you're not a photographer, but you like viewing photographic images in home remodeling or architectural magazines, this book will teach you much about (and give you a better appreciation for) architectural photography. Who knows? It may even launch you into a new career.

A good reference book for photographers breaking in the field of interior photography,with digital and/or film equipment.

Not the right book for you.......2005-01-06

This book is not good at anything in particular especially if you are doing or planning to do any kind of digital photography. It seems to me that the author is not a very good architectural photographer himself because most of the pictures you see in the book are terrible, even when used to ilustrate different points. When it comes to digital photography he speaks like he knows very little about what is possible to do today with a digital camera.
Not a source of inspiration or good complete information for anybody seriously getting into architectural photography.
First time I return a book to Amazon.

It's Just What the Title Says!.......2004-06-09

This book is a very useful and informative. It does a very good job of covering what makes professional interior photography work. Definitely a book for advanced amateurs or professionals. Would be great for a professional who is expanding their scope of work to include interior photography or who is looking for techniques or useful ideas. Harris does a very good job of describing appropriate camera and lighting equipment, lighting techniques, color correction processes, etc. The book is pretty much up-to-date and covers digital photography reasonably well. It is a very "hands-on" book from someone who obviously knows what they are doing. I probably would not recommend this to "snapshot" photographers, you might not get too much out of it.

A great book!.......2000-08-16

Michael Harries does a great job on this book. In this book he recommends the view camera (instead of the typical 35mm). This book isn't really going to teach all aspects of how to use this camera or the equipment. However, there is pretty good coverage concerning lights and how to correct color with filters. He also gives a really good run down on what equipment to buy, composition, and different types of film.

If you want to learn a lot about architectural photography and its equipment, this is a really good book. If you want lots of specifics on view cameras, you'll need a different book.

No Objections Here.......2007-06-15

In fashion photographer Mario Testino's first published book of photographs (1999) he shows over and over that he has a wicked sense of humor, a priceless asset for anyone and certainly for a photographer. Who else would shot an aroused elephant ("Jumbo")? Or Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss seated facing each other on toilet seats? (One of these women is buck naked but you'll have to purchase the book to see which one.) There is also a series of four photos that are entitled "Roving Fingers." Check out what I call the mad-hatter carrying a sign that reads "Gays in the Millinery." There is lots of skin here since several of the photographs are of scantily clad folks at the beach in Rio de Janiero. Many of these images are far more erotic than the much posed models currently published in so many photography books. (I would put the photo entitled "Dreamer" in this category.) Many of the people are so real that you can almost smell them. the two-page foldout of a painter in Lima ("Exhibitionist") comes to mind. There is much cleavage, both fore and aft and just as many crotch shots as well.

A word about the layout: there are several pages that fold out with photographs that mirror each other. Although the pages are not numbered, the photographs are reproduced in smaller size in the back of the book, complete with titles and the places where they were shot: Rio de Janiero, Paris, Naples, Moscow, Miami, New York, Moscow, etc.

Almost everyone in this hooty volume appears to be having a good time. You will too if you pick up this book that several books published later imitate but do not surpass.

Excellent Photography.......2007-03-14

O.K. so I'm not a photographer. I've no expertise to offer save as one who likes photographs. This having been said, this book is so much fun! I love it! What others may have justly criticized as poor lighting, poor composition, or poor exposure, has, for me, an entirely different effect--I'm left feeling as if I were present, drinking it all in, flowing with the chaotic, glamorous moment, of sometimes beautiful people in their not necessarily beautiful lives. The characteristics which others find a detraction make it, for me, a lived experience--which is not to say that the people become more likeable but they at least become more understandable.

Even though he is one of my favorite photographor, I did hesitate to get this one , becasue all the reviews were not CLEARLY cool-but WHO CARES to get a photography book and it was not time to choose a life time guidelines or English dictionary to find out which one contains more words and clear to understand.

Turned out, it was such a good and fun photography book to joy the moment. From this "ANY OBJECTION?", more than Fashion and SEX, he has created as a whole new concept of PHAIDON'S own style. Sex is not a serious on here as he often makes in its own way. However, even tough his art pieces contained homosexuality, full nudity scenes, there are not any shocking sex/gay scene to look at. Things were processed his view way. I enjoyed to have them and to look at. Plus, it is collectable work. :-)

Bitita's Diary.......2001-05-02

Bitita's Diary is the testimonial of a poor Brazilian woman named Carolina Maria de Jesus. Carolina grew up in the 1920s and 1930s. She lived in both the city as well as the countryside, and clearly recalls the rough living conditions she had to endure. This book dose not only describe what it was like to live in poverty, but also gives you the unique perspective of a poor woman in a patriarchial society. I found this book to be very informative. Carolina understandably writes about the terrible living conditions she had to endure, but also gave some thought to political policies, and their impact on society. While there was a lot of valuable information found throughout the book I feel that if the information was better organized into seperate arguments the book might be a more valid resource. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about women in latin America.

Bitita's Diary.......2001-05-01

I felt that the book Bitita's Diary by Carolina Maria de Jesus was an excellent testimonial about a young girl growing up in Brazil during the early 1900s. As a young girl living in the favelas near Sacramento, she faced many hardships because of her race, gender, and class. She was discriminated in every which way because she was a women of darker skin who belonged to the lower class. Throughout all the obstacles that she faced in life, she still seemed to conquer the impossible. She recieved an education which helped to succeed in life. I really did enjoy this book because Bitita took you on a journey through her thoughts and feelings. She forced you to endure the suffering that she felt during her hard times, yet she also let you enjoy her happiness during good times. What I also enjoyed about the book is that by it being testimonial it challenges "offical history." Many time there is only one side to the story, but through Bitita's writing, one can see how a young girl of the lower class viewed the Brazilian Revolution of 1930 differently than others.

Bitita's Diary tells the story of a Brazilian mulatta, Carolina Maria de Jesus, also know as Bitita, and the struggles that she had faced throughout her life. This testimony reveals the hardships that Bitita had to endure regarding poverty and inequality. Not only does this novel give the reader a sense of what she had to go through, but also shows how strong Bitita was by never giving up. While reading, we are able to understand the conditions that she grew up in and also learn how she was rejected by her family and made fun of by others. After reading Bitita's Diary, I have a better understanding of the hardships that people go through in other countries, but I have learned that these people do not give up instead, strive for a better live.

I enjoyed this novel. It was very educational and related very well to class material. This novel helped to explain ideas such as discrimination by race and class, Latin American Culture, and feminism. My favorite chapter, The Godmothers, is very important to the rest of the novel because gives background into the rest of family. I would recommend this books if you wish to further explore Latin American culture and values.

"Bitita's Diary" by Carolina Maria de Jesus was a very interesting testimonial about a young black girl growing up in Brazil. Bitita had to face many obstacles throughtout her life, beginning in her childhood years. Many people in her onw family would (did) not accept her because of her dark skin and kinky hair. She was not allowed to enter the homes of her mulatto relatives. Bitita was treated different from her brother because he was of a lighter complextion. She was very curious as a child which irritated her mother and older relatives (she would constantly question different theories/aspects of life. As Bitita grew up she found that life was difficult, and she had to work very hard to maintain in society. For example, Bitita was very sick and was had an infection in her leg; yet she still worked on that leg as much as she could until she could not work anymore. In all, this book was a great exapmle of a testimonial. You were able to view the world as Bitita saw it and see the hardships that she had to face throughout her life.
