Vanishing Georgia: Photographs from the Vanishing Georgia Collection, Georgia Department of Archives and History
Sherry Konter Manufacturer: University of Georgia Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0820324957 |
Book Description
The absorbing vintage photographs brought together in Vanishing Georgia recall life in the state from halfway through the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. Pictured here are both great events and commonplace occurrences: Atlanta in the wake of Sherman's march and a small town bedecked in flags on the Fourth of July; paddlewheelers loaded with barrels of turpentine and proud owners of new automobiles; a get-together with neighbors for a corn shucking and a crowd straining to hear the last words of a convicted man. Vanishing Georgia is an engaging entree into the state's vast and varied history, a treasure for both casual browsers and serious scholars.Customer Reviews:

Pictorial History of Gwinnett County Georgia.......2005-07-16
A Well Done Pictorial Review.......2002-01-31
Vanishing Gwinnett is a pictorial history of life and times in Gwinnett County, Georgia, which has evolved to be part of the ever-increasing metropolitan Atlanta area. The book is primarily captioned historical photographs provided by state and local historical groups. Early century Gwinnett industry, families and others pictures of interest are shown. It's a typical local history picture book. Perhaps some would find the included photo of an early 1900's lynching offensive. It's not an attractive part of our past, but is historical nonetheless. Fascism and pro-Nazi beliefs? Sure didn't see any references to any of that in the book I saw.
If you have an interest in this areas local history, you will find the book interesting. I don't know the author, but the book is well put together and certainly not slanted in any direction.

Japanese manga--in color--about a follower of Joan of Arc.......2004-01-25
The story follows the adventures of Emil of Lorraine, a girl raised as a boy by Captain Baudricourt after the death of her father, the Duke of Lorraine, to keep her safe from the cruel spite of the Duke's wife. Emil is compelled to follow in the footsteps of Joan of Arc eleven years after the latter was burned at the stake following her failed campaign to unite the different provinces of France and drive out the English. Joan did succeed, however, in getting the Dauphin crowned King Charles VII of France. It is Charles whom Emil now seeks out to continue Joan's mission, but she comes up against a formidable rogues' gallery of villainous nobles with agendas of their own, including Charles' own son, the Dauphin Louis. Helping her maintain her faith is the vision of Joan herself who appears to Emil at key moments.
In this volume, Emil literally follows the journey that Joan took, traveling to Domremy, where Joan, or "La Pucelle" as she was called by her followers, grew up, and Orleans, where Joan and her troops broke the English siege. On the way, she and her small group of followers have a skirmish with a band of highwaymen, leading to a burst of the kind of swift riding and fighting action which is something of a specialty of the artist, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Later, in Orleans, Emil has her first fateful--and violent--encounter with the Dauphin Louis.
The artwork in this series is breathtaking and makes imaginative use of color to convey effects of light, shadow and darkness. The occasional full-page and half-page panels recall some of the very best book illustrations. One might consider buying another copy just to cut out some of the pages to frame. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko is a manga artist who also happens to have worked in anime as an animation director and character designer. He is best known to anime fans for MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM, CRUSHER JOE, and VENUS WARS and to manga fans for "Venus Wars" and "Rebel Sword."

Collected Black Women's Poetry: Volume 1 (Schomberg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers)
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0195052536 |
Book Description
These four volumes collect the poetic works of eleven African-American women writing in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Volume 1 presents two collections by Mary E. Tucker Lambert-- Loew's Bridge, A Broadway Idyl, a poet's-eye view of lower Manhattan just fter the Civil War, and Poems--and Infelicia, a dramatic work by the notorious Adah Isaacs Menken. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain works by nine other poets, all of which were were published between 1895 and 1910, a particularly brutal era for blacks. But, surprisingly, only one of these women (Lizelia Moorer) protests the treatment of her race during this period of social upheaval and injustice. The remaining poets all conformed to the ethos of most black writers of the time, "whitewashing" their art while educating and uplifting their people. Their themes are traditional--love, nature, death, Christian idealism and morality, and family--and are for the most part couched in conventional forms and language. As interesting for the subjects that they address as for those that they ignore, these selections offer a unique smapling of poetic voices that, until now, have gone largely unheard.

Wonderfully balanced biography of a fascinating woman.......2005-08-10
Well research.......2004-04-02
Ultimately, the picture that emerges of Blixen is an unflattering one. Donelson downplays Blixen's self-avowed attachment to Africans and points at her neediness and helplessness. I'd recommend this book as a good counterpoint to the unrestrained romance of "Out of Africa". Why did Blixen write "Out of Africa" the way she did? On reading "Out of Isak Dinesen in Africa", as was suggested in the introduction, Blixen wrote the book to convince others that her experience in Africa was not a failure; but perhaps also to convince herself that despite the trauma of personal and financial loss, it was worth it.
Beyond the myth.......2002-09-27
Donelson's writing is wonderful, transporting the reader to another time and place, but at the same time making Dinesen seem very real and very human. It is also the only work that gives us a Dinesen profile that in fact fits the one that comes to light through Dinesen's OWN letters from Africa (still in print and a must read for any true Dinesen fan) to her family in Denmark during the years 1914-31.
Her memoir "Out of Africa" was Dinesen writing nostalgically in retrospect about her lost paradise several years after her return to Denmark from Africa. The film "Out of Africa" is without doubt a gorgeous and highly entertaining composite version of Dinesen's memoir as well as other works on Dinesen, including Thurman's bio. However, Donelson's book gets at the truth. Whether one likes her work or not depends. If you are the kind of Dinesen fan who prefers the glossy nostalgic version, you might be irritated that someone would "dare" to go beyond the pretty fiction. If however you want the truth, confirmed in Dinesen's own letters, you will enjoy Donelson's book immensely.
Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen.......2002-09-16
In the movie "Out of Africa" I believe that the writers of the film script missed a wonderful opportunity. In the book "Out of Isak Dinesen in Africa, Karen Blixen's untoldstoy, by Linda Donelson" a reader can find an exciting, wonderful, semsual, complex woman. A woman that is not the same person that appears in the movie. Sometimes, too often movies are made with just the vision of great profits alone, artistry be damned. Too often movie moguls seem to be most interested in maintaining the glory of the lead characters and less interested in telling the great story they have to work with. The Out of Africa Movie would have been so much better with new leading people and a script that didn't have to paint Barron Blixon as such a heavy and could have given a more realistic picture of the marvelous unique man, Denys Finch Hatton. I suspect that the script may have been contaminated by impute from forces that might have been less than insightful. As past history has demonstrated the Moguls some time miss the mark by a long ways.
Linda Donelson in her book, which is smooth reading, does a most wonderful job of letting us see inside the rich character of the real people in this story. But not only that, a long the way you taste and feel Arica and you begin to understand the remarkable history , not only of Nairobi and it's surrounding African wonderlands, this book is magic in the way it blends in social history and world events with close personal feelings and experiences.
Odd biography of an odd woman.......2002-09-06
Granted, this was a relatively minor aspect of Blixen's strange life, but I find it odd that the author would refute one aspect to the "Blixen syphilis legend" and not take it to its logical conclusion.
