I think that this book is a great resource for anyone who is a jewelry student or just in love with very fine jewelry. While the book does focus more on the lives of the three Cartier brothers, there are many great pictures of their jewelry as well. I think this book is well worth the money.

            Book Description

The absorbing vintage photographs brought together in Vanishing Georgia recall life in the state from halfway through the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. Pictured here are both great events and commonplace occurrences: Atlanta in the wake of Sherman's march and a small town bedecked in flags on the Fourth of July; paddlewheelers loaded with barrels of turpentine and proud owners of new automobiles; a get-together with neighbors for a corn shucking and a crowd straining to hear the last words of a convicted man. Vanishing Georgia is an engaging entree into the state's vast and varied history, a treasure for both casual browsers and serious scholars.

An absolute excellent source of photography of past Georgia history. Each photo tells its own story. Some photos will sadden you, others will make you smile but none of them should be forgotten. Middle school and high school students in Georgia should have this book as required reading as too often our history is glossed over in television, motion pictures, etc.. This wonderful book shows the "non-Hollywood" version of life from the late 1800's through the early and middle 1900's. Anyone interested in Georgia history will be enchanted with this book.

I'm not sure what book the first reviewer read; it certainly wasn't this pictorial history of Gwinnett County, GA. This is 200+ pages of photographs and captions detailing historical sites and buildings. The level of detail is impressive. Each caption mentions dates and names, as well as interesting tidbits of information on daily life. Definitely worth putting into an archive or personal collection.

4 out of 5 stars A Well Done Pictorial Review.......2002-01-31

I'm not sure I read the same book as the previous reviewer, and feel compelled to offer a different view.

Vanishing Gwinnett is a pictorial history of life and times in Gwinnett County, Georgia, which has evolved to be part of the ever-increasing metropolitan Atlanta area. The book is primarily captioned historical photographs provided by state and local historical groups. Early century Gwinnett industry, families and others pictures of interest are shown. It's a typical local history picture book. Perhaps some would find the included photo of an early 1900's lynching offensive. It's not an attractive part of our past, but is historical nonetheless. Fascism and pro-Nazi beliefs? Sure didn't see any references to any of that in the book I saw.

If you have an interest in this areas local history, you will find the book interesting. I don't know the author, but the book is well put together and certainly not slanted in any direction.

                      Book Description

A range of electronic corpora has become increasingly accessible via the WWW and CD-ROM. This development coincided with improvements in the standards governing the collecting, encoding and archiving of such data. Less attention, however, has been paid to making other types of digital data available. This is especially true of that which one might describe as 'unconventional', namely, dialects, child language and bilingual databases. This book is a first step toward developing similar standards for enriching and preserving these neglected resources.

                      5 out of 5 stars An all-around masterpiece.......2006-04-29

The "Joan" series, while only thre volumes long, is one of the best manga stories I've read in a long, long, time. It combines all of the elements needed to make any comic book work - and it does them effectively, never overusing dramatic effects or providing a sub-par moment.

The story is rich and complicated, telling the story of 17-year-old Emily who was brought up male. She disguises herself as a man named Emil eleven years after Joan of Arc's death and goes off to war to fight for France. The dauphin Louis, son of the king and the same age as Emily, sees his father as a weakling and wants to seize power over the country for himself. The country, fighting against Britain and divided among the side of King Charles and the followers of Louis, is at brutal war. Emily can see the ghost of Joan ("La Pucelle"), who gives her advice and help when it is needed. The plot combines true historical details with religious and political overtones to be one of the most interesting stories and a treat to any fan of historical fiction.

One of the biggest highlights of the series has always been its gorgeous artwork. Down to the smallest details, the environments and characters are beautifully inked and painted over with full-color watercolors and very realistic shading and tones. There will be no doubt in anyone's mind that the illustrations are some of the best in the comic field. Yasuhiko is an all-around talented author and artist in every possible way. From the action scenes and vicious battles with the highwaymen to the soft and innocent visions of the late Joan, this series could very well be the best-looking manga in the world.

This particular volume has its emotional gems in all of the right places, from the heart and soul put into Emily's journey to the flickering, destructive firelight when she is held captive by the dauphin. There's a new and exciting scene around every corner, and the quality of such excitement never degrades or becomes repetitive.

"Joan", book I, is definitely one of the most beautiful and thought-out creations to graze the world of Japanese entertainment. This rare find is phenomenal and well worth the money for anyone who is willing to tolerate the harsh, realistic view that highlights the inner workings of history. Pick it up and I am 100% certain that it will earn a treasured place in your collection.

                      Five stars.

                      4 out of 5 stars Japanese manga--in color--about a follower of Joan of Arc.......2004-01-25

"Joan," a graphic novel in three volumes, is that rare Japanese illustrated work that's in full color. And what gorgeous color it is! Not the sterile, computer-created, digitally applied color one sees in American comic books these days, but beautiful and elegant watercolors applied to the dramatic line renderings of the people and places of 15th century France.

The story follows the adventures of Emil of Lorraine, a girl raised as a boy by Captain Baudricourt after the death of her father, the Duke of Lorraine, to keep her safe from the cruel spite of the Duke's wife. Emil is compelled to follow in the footsteps of Joan of Arc eleven years after the latter was burned at the stake following her failed campaign to unite the different provinces of France and drive out the English. Joan did succeed, however, in getting the Dauphin crowned King Charles VII of France. It is Charles whom Emil now seeks out to continue Joan's mission, but she comes up against a formidable rogues' gallery of villainous nobles with agendas of their own, including Charles' own son, the Dauphin Louis. Helping her maintain her faith is the vision of Joan herself who appears to Emil at key moments.

In this volume, Emil literally follows the journey that Joan took, traveling to Domremy, where Joan, or "La Pucelle" as she was called by her followers, grew up, and Orleans, where Joan and her troops broke the English siege. On the way, she and her small group of followers have a skirmish with a band of highwaymen, leading to a burst of the kind of swift riding and fighting action which is something of a specialty of the artist, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Later, in Orleans, Emil has her first fateful--and violent--encounter with the Dauphin Louis.

The artwork in this series is breathtaking and makes imaginative use of color to convey effects of light, shadow and darkness. The occasional full-page and half-page panels recall some of the very best book illustrations. One might consider buying another copy just to cut out some of the pages to frame. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko is a manga artist who also happens to have worked in anime as an animation director and character designer. He is best known to anime fans for MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM, CRUSHER JOE, and VENUS WARS and to manga fans for "Venus Wars" and "Rebel Sword."

I purchased the five volume Excellence in Singing set, and they work wonderfully altogether! This first book is perfect when beginning to learn about the fundamentals of singing and the different issues within your voice. It's a great book to start out with.

                                Book Description

These four volumes collect the poetic works of eleven African-American women writing in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Volume 1 presents two collections by Mary E. Tucker Lambert-- Loew's Bridge, A Broadway Idyl, a poet's-eye view of lower Manhattan just fter the Civil War, and Poems--and Infelicia, a dramatic work by the notorious Adah Isaacs Menken. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 contain works by nine other poets, all of which were were published between 1895 and 1910, a particularly brutal era for blacks. But, surprisingly, only one of these women (Lizelia Moorer) protests the treatment of her race during this period of social upheaval and injustice. The remaining poets all conformed to the ethos of most black writers of the time, "whitewashing" their art while educating and uplifting their people. Their themes are traditional--love, nature, death, Christian idealism and morality, and family--and are for the most part couched in conventional forms and language. As interesting for the subjects that they address as for those that they ignore, these selections offer a unique smapling of poetic voices that, until now, have gone largely unheard.

This new analysis of "Out of Africa" describes the young Baroness Blixen's struggles with a difficult marriage, a pioneer coffee farm, and a complicated love affair in Kenya.

Dr.Donelson's well-researched biography of Karen Blixen is a balanced look at the Danish writer's years in Africa. Wonderfully sympathetic and leisurely paced, this "Untold Story" is less a revelation of startling new facts as a skillful new presentation of the many facets of Blixen's life on a Kenyan coffee farm. Donelson's sensible narrative is enhanced by a keen insight into Blixen's literary works. The biographer peels back the onion to reveal the link between Blixen's fantastic adult fairy tales and her relationships in Africa.

I am a great fan of literary biographies and this book remains a solid favourite. Donelson shows a great understanding of Blixen's story but her restrained approach lets both Blixen herself and Africa share in the telling.

                                      3 out of 5 stars Well research.......2004-04-02

The difficulty with writing a biography about Karen Blixen lies in the fact that until the latter part of her life, she lived very much as a solitary and intensely private individual. Consequently, the part of her life we are most interested in, her time in Kenya, are closed except for the glimpses one gets from her letters back home. Donelson has done an admirable job of trying to move beyond Blixen's letters. She relies primarily on interpretations of Blixen's books to give more flavor to Blixen's motivations and state of mind. Naturally, it will always be speculative to speak of someone else's intentions. What I appreciated most in this book was the presence of hard numbers. We do get a better sense of the economics of the whole farm deal than with Thurman's biography.

Ultimately, the picture that emerges of Blixen is an unflattering one. Donelson downplays Blixen's self-avowed attachment to Africans and points at her neediness and helplessness. I'd recommend this book as a good counterpoint to the unrestrained romance of "Out of Africa". Why did Blixen write "Out of Africa" the way she did? On reading "Out of Isak Dinesen in Africa", as was suggested in the introduction, Blixen wrote the book to convince others that her experience in Africa was not a failure; but perhaps also to convince herself that despite the trauma of personal and financial loss, it was worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the myth.......2002-09-27

Linda Donelson's book is so far (to my knowledge) the only work on Dinesen to move beyond the Hollywood movie "Out of Africa", the glossy version of Dinesen's own glossy memoir by the same name. Judith Thurman in her wonderful and lauded biography also writes a great deal about Dinesens's years in Africa, but Donelson's book is concentrated wholly on Dinesens's time there.

Donelson's writing is wonderful, transporting the reader to another time and place, but at the same time making Dinesen seem very real and very human. It is also the only work that gives us a Dinesen profile that in fact fits the one that comes to light through Dinesen's OWN letters from Africa (still in print and a must read for any true Dinesen fan) to her family in Denmark during the years 1914-31.

Her memoir "Out of Africa" was Dinesen writing nostalgically in retrospect about her lost paradise several years after her return to Denmark from Africa. The film "Out of Africa" is without doubt a gorgeous and highly entertaining composite version of Dinesen's memoir as well as other works on Dinesen, including Thurman's bio. However, Donelson's book gets at the truth. Whether one likes her work or not depends. If you are the kind of Dinesen fan who prefers the glossy nostalgic version, you might be irritated that someone would "dare" to go beyond the pretty fiction. If however you want the truth, confirmed in Dinesen's own letters, you will enjoy Donelson's book immensely.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen.......2002-09-16

                                      Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen

In the movie "Out of Africa" I believe that the writers of the film script missed a wonderful opportunity. In the book "Out of Isak Dinesen in Africa, Karen Blixen's untoldstoy, by Linda Donelson" a reader can find an exciting, wonderful, semsual, complex woman. A woman that is not the same person that appears in the movie. Sometimes, too often movies are made with just the vision of great profits alone, artistry be damned. Too often movie moguls seem to be most interested in maintaining the glory of the lead characters and less interested in telling the great story they have to work with. The Out of Africa Movie would have been so much better with new leading people and a script that didn't have to paint Barron Blixon as such a heavy and could have given a more realistic picture of the marvelous unique man, Denys Finch Hatton. I suspect that the script may have been contaminated by impute from forces that might have been less than insightful. As past history has demonstrated the Moguls some time miss the mark by a long ways.

Linda Donelson in her book, which is smooth reading, does a most wonderful job of letting us see inside the rich character of the real people in this story. But not only that, a long the way you taste and feel Arica and you begin to understand the remarkable history , not only of Nairobi and it's surrounding African wonderlands, this book is magic in the way it blends in social history and world events with close personal feelings and experiences.

2 out of 5 stars Odd biography of an odd woman.......2002-09-06

Before reading this book, I knew nothing about Karen Blixen's personal life, other than that she supposedly died of syphilis. The author refutes this idea, proving that Blixen's physical problems were due to the various drugs and poisons she took to combat her alleged illness. However, Donelson somehow misses one glaringly obvious detail--it's clear, reading this book, that Blixen never had syphilis at all! First, her husband (apparently the only man she was sleeping with at the time) never showed any signs of the disease. Second, Blixen never tested positive for syphilis--indeed, we have no proof that any doctor ever diagnosed her as a sufferer. All we have is her word for it, which is clearly suspect. Blixen, from what this book says, was a fantasist--or, if you want to be blunt, a pathological liar, who clearly loved to create an "image" for herself. Plus, she had particular reason to have a neurotic fixation about syphilis--her father committed suicide when she was a child, and it was said he did this because he found he had contracted the disease. This was bound to leave its mark on her.

Granted, this was a relatively minor aspect of Blixen's strange life, but I find it odd that the author would refute one aspect to the "Blixen syphilis legend" and not take it to its logical conclusion.
