The Architecture of the City (Oppositions Books)
ASIN: 0415128269 |
Book Description
Rethinking Architecture offers a refreshing take on the statement of architecture -- what we mean by what we build. Brought together for the first time, this collection of core writings on architecture by many of the key philosophers and cultural theorists of the twentieth century reconsiders many of the accepted tenets of architectural theory from a broader cultural perspective.
Rethinking Architecture represents a careful selection of the very best theoretical writings on the ideas which have shaped our cities and our experiences around architecture. Neil Leach lays out five sections composing the predominant schools of twentieth century thought. Sectional introductions link important ideas and themes, and surveys of the lives and works of each theorist preface their writings.
Customer Reviews:
solid choice of readings.......2006-10-04
Contrary to the opinion of the fellow who gave this book 1 star, this book has an excellent selection of essays from many key 20th century thinkers (including three essays and 1 extract from Heidegger, which should be enough to undermine the critic's credibility). For the most part, they are presented unedited in full. Many of the selections are must-reads for people who wish to understand particular periods in the history of modern architecture, and it is nice to have them all together under a single cover.
Mis-reading architecture.......2001-04-17
I read this book and was instantly struck by the mis-representation and editing of the theories of some of the centuries most important thinkers. The discourse is limited to a one-dimensional view of architectural theory that seems to dismiss the most potent ideas of critical theory and radical critique. The book is structured around themed chapters containing several extracts with a logic of "this is a critique of this" in a rather naive way. The author's ommission of Heidegger's thinking is bizarre and his critique of Loos misses out the crucial influence of the intellectual milieu of early 20th century Vienna (Kraus, Wittgenstein etc.). Some interesting lesser known figures are brought to light (Kracauer for example)and there is some fantastic material here extracted from larger works, but be warned! this is a book with its own agenda.

Rethinking Compilations.......2001-01-29
This book is a compilation of essays on architecture from a very distinctive and unique point of view, which shows people involved with architecture or its related fields the perspective of recognised sociologists, communicators, semiologists et cetera, and which constitutes a very valuable tool for a deeper understanding of our everyday proceedings in such a globalizing practice as the art of designing works of art where we can dwell.

Book Description
Reading this exceptionally clever, completely fresh approach to selling words through pictures could be the turning point in many writers' careers. By creating packages that combine text and pertinent pictures, writers can find new markets for their work. Everything a writer needs to know to develop competency at photography is explained, including composing shots that are just what editors want. Publishing on the World Wide Web is also covered, as are the legalities involved in photo publication.
Customer Reviews:
Worse than worthless. Why is this turkey still in print?!?!.......2003-01-13
Rather than spending time discussing how to use photographs to make your submissions more appealing, or how to market books or articles that include both writing and photographs, this book is a very basic introduction to principles of photography. There are many, many superior books on this subject.
To make matters worse, this book is very dated. There is significant space spent on setting up a black-and-white darkroom, and the author sings the praises of manual focus camera systems which haven't been manufactured for a decade. The book is copyrighted 1998, so there is no excuse for this. A writer who knows little of photoraphy is literally much better off without the book than with the dated information it contains.
I cannot recommend the book for any purpose. I haven't checked back to verify, but I believe this is my first one-star rating out of my many Amazon reviews (I've given very few two-star ratings, also). I can give it with a clear conscience.

How I plan to support my son if he DOESN'T play football!.......2005-03-25
I really loved how the father in this story got behind his son, even when he picked a sport that the dad had little or no understanding of. I got that impression that, to the dad, it was not what sport his son was playing that was important, but instead it was the fact that it was his son playing that mattered.
I am a high school football coach. My son is 6 months old. If he picks (heaven forbid) to not play football, I want to be able to see that the value is in whatever he does and that it should be important to me because it is important to him.
This is a great book for all fathers to read-- especially if you think your son is going to be the best at (fill-in whatever sport or activity you want) instead of thinking that you are going to let him know that he is the best son you could have ever asked for, no matter what.
This book helps to remind me of my most important job-- to be a supportive father.

Book Description
When Roughing It in the Bush was published in 1852, it created an international sensation, not only for Susanna Moodie’s “glowing narrative of personal incident,” but also for her firm determination to puncture the illusions European land-agents were circulating about life in Canada. This frank and fascinating chronicle details her harsh – and humorous – experiences in homesteading with her family in the woods of Upper Canada.
Part documentary, part psychological parable, Roughing It in the Bush is, above all, an honest account of how one woman coped not only in a new world, but, more importantly, with herself.
The New Canadian Library edition is an unabridged reprint of the complete original text.

Nature has lavished all her grandest elements to form this astonishing panorama. There frowns the cloud-capped mountain, and below, the cataract foams and thunders; wood, and rock, and river combine to lend their aid in making the picture perfect, and worthy of its Divine Originator.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite a feminist.......2007-07-25
Where was this book in the bra-burner days of the 1960's and 1970's: The Feminine Mystique meets Moodie, Judy Chicago inviting Susanna to The Dinner Party? Barely begin reading and you will want to give a swift kick in the pants (and wish that she had done it) to her ever-absent husband who dragged her back from honest mud of the pioneer life to the Cheney's and Halliburton's of mid-nineteenth century western civilization.
We are frustrated that she doesn't speak up to those who take and trample over her. Speak up, woman! Don't let them get away with it!
Her daughter and granddaughter were historic photographers who set milestones. Where were they mentioned in my history books or Girl Scout handbooks? Roughing it in the Bush is about women's place and power, make no mistake about it, whether you like it or not.
I'm finding that with the eyes of the world on Canada, Alaska, and the Arctic suffering from rapid global climate change, books on this part of the world are becoming increasingly easier to find for those who seek the obscure, out-of-print titles being resurrected by reader inquiry and demand.
Priceless.......2006-08-26
I have read most or many chapters of this book. Since it is a report of a time and place and area of human endeavor and North American pioneering history that would remain in greater darkness were it not for Moodie (her husband, and her sister Traill too), this book is priceless and amazing. There were not too many fully literate English gals in the undeveloped woods of Canada in 1832!
Roughing It In The Bush - Amazing.......2005-01-27
I absolutely loved this book because Mrs. Moodie has an incredible ability to paint pictures and emotions in your mind and heart. The day to day history is vivid and exciting. I found it interesting to read first hand about the many places in the Kawarthas and Cobourg regions as they existed at the dawn of their settlement. Observing the interaction between the Americans and early Canadian immigrants was also valuable. A very eloquent book.
Journey with an early Canadian immigrant.......2004-11-14
For a great first hand account of the early Canadian immigrant experience read this book. The author is authentic and self depreciating in a subtle way. The places and people are real, and more important the thoughts of the author are the thoughts of the time but reveal a mind not different from our own. Bye the way, I find history books boring but loved this piece of our history.
yuck - unlikeable, racist author.......2004-07-24
I came away from this with a very bad taste in my mouth. I don't find Mrs. Moodie very likeable at all. Her racism toward the Irish is really offensive, even judging her by the standards of her own day. The rest of the book is so-so -- some of the frontier experiences are interesting, but I found her personality so unlikeable that I cheered when her house caught fire.

Book Description
Betty had plenty of potatoes, without the trouble of planting, or the expense of buying; she never kept a cow, yet she sold butter and milk; but she had a fashion, and it proved a convenient one to her, of making pets of the cattle of her neighbours.... we all looked upon Betty as a sort of freebooter, living upon the property of others. -from Chapter V: "Our First Settlement, and the Borrowing System" A classic of Canadian frontier literature, this delightful volume was devoured by readers on both sides of the Atlantic when it was first published in 1852, who turned to it for an unvarnished portrait of homesteading in the woods of Upper Canada. Though Moodie depicts a life that is harsh and dangerous in an unforgiving environment far from civilization, her sense of humor and embracing of adventure are extraordinary, and create an invaluable first-person document of a formative time in North American history. Canadian writer SUSANNA MOODIE (1803-1885) was born in England and emigrated to Canada with her husband, a military officer, in 1832. The sister of author Catharine Parr Traill, Moodie also wrote Life in the Clearings (1853) and Matrimonial Speculations (1854).

This is a treasure.......2007-07-06
This gem of a volume starts with cholera, and ends with a plea for families in the 1800s not to emigrate to the New World. Camping it most certainly isn't. We're talking life and death situations.
I would have made a lousy pioneer; ROUGHING IT IN THE BUSH simply fortifies that knowledge. Susanna Moodie did not choose to move from England to Canada. Like so many women of her times, the choice was made by her husband, and she had no recourse but to follow him. Her staunch attitude that refused to be overcome by despair despite the very real hardships she had to endure, makes her, in my mind, a model of the kind of strength women have and often do not recognize until we are called upon to test it.
