Book Description

Early one day in the summer of 1993, the famously prolific architect Norman Jaffe went for a swim at the beach in Bridgehampton, New York, leaving his clothes in a neat little pile on the sand, as he did almost every morning. But this particular morning, he never returned. With his disappearance, he left behind many unanswered questions--not only about the cause of his death, but about the nature of his architectural legacy.

Romantic Modernist: The Life and Work of Norman Jaffe, Architect is the first book to explore Jaffe's body of work and the inner struggle that shaped his life. Although he was described by Men's Bazaar magazine as the "Man with an Image" when he posed for a fashion spread in the late 1960s, he was much more than that. A magnetic, free-spirited individual, he approached his work with a sense of passion that was all but unrivaled in the world of architecture. Over the course of his career, he established himself as an innovator in solar and urban design, but he is best known for his strikingly sculptural houses in the Hamptons, from small hideaways to sprawling estates, to which he brought an almost mystical vision: with the perfect balance of light and shadow and the right proportions and materials, he was convinced, houses could provide what he described as "dreamlike, romantic journeys" that offered an opportunity for self-discovery. Through interviews with Jaffe's closest friends and associates, as well as exhaustive archival research, critic Alastair Gordon traces Jaffe's career trajectory from his early years on the West Coast through his increasingly celebrated life in New York and his premature, unexplained death. Hundreds of original drawings and color photographs illustrate Jaffe's riveting story, offering a rare look at this charismatic figure whose life was as interesting as the work he produced.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous book and a good read.......2006-09-12

This looks like a gorgeous coffee table book but the story of Jaffe's life is more like a romantic thriller. His disappearance after a life of tortured creativity as the architect of choice to the rich and famous in the Hamptons makes for a riveting read with glorious visuals. Inspiring and inspired by Alastair Gordon who also wrote Weekend Utopia, another tale of architecture in the Hamptons, a great writer.

5 out of 5 stars Dont Leave Home Without It !!!!!!!!!.......2001-11-25

This little book is absolutely wonderful for many different reasons. For starters, it is small, bound in a nice hard cover with a spiral spine, making it easy to use in the field and easy to fit into your Artbin paint case.

Every beginner struggles with painting skies, and this book is a very nice, focused treatment of the subject. Patricia Seligman lays out many colorful examples in a wide range of media, all organized systematically (Clear Sky, Light Cloud, Dense Cloud, Layered Cloud, and each of these with examples at Early Morning, Midday and Evening). Seeing how many different ways artists have approached this one subject is both inspirational and educational.

There is a nice section on how to mix blues and grays, with lots of color swatch examples of color progression.

For such a small book, there are also lots of general painting techniques, tips and composition theory are included.

I paint in the field, and of all the books on painting I've acquired, this is the one that goes with me.

    Very Highly Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A perfect pocket guide.......2000-09-22

I have been using a borrowed copy of this book and want to get my own copy as I find it so useful. In a compact format that can be taken on location easily, it provides a comprehensive guide to painting skies in all weathers, times of day and media. Indispensable for any landscape artist.

      Book Description

"Reproduce Almost Anything" Basic Silicone Mold Making, Second Edition is a 56-minute videotape(With 3D-Animation.), and a 44-page workbook with National Materials Source-list combination, that shows a beginner, in easily understood techniques, how to make an inexpensive, two-sided silicone rubber mold from almost any original part and then use that silicone rubber mold to make dozens, of exact copies of the original part in metal, plastic, rubber, ceramic, wax or even chocolate. Several minutes of 3D-Animation greatly simplify the learning process for the viewer! The accompanying workbook parallels the videotape adding even more detailed information. This is a "must have" tool for any real creative person!

As the title indicates, "Reproduce Almost Anything" is a basic course in silicone mold making and cannot possibly address every imaginable shape that individuals may come up with. Ridge considers himself a modern version of "Rumpelstiltskin". His techniques can show you how to weave straw into gold. (See the "Entrepreneur" magazine review for proof.)

3 out of 5 stars Not dissapointed but not impressed either........2007-01-12

Typical of American based material this book + video (or dvd) is heavily padded of which the contents could be easily condensed into a single chapter. As other reviews have already mentioned, metal is not addressed in this book - so if you are looking to model metal - go elsewhere. Also, there is a lot of reference to 'the next book' / series and so forth which again is another typical western style marketing tactic. What is strange though, that although Ben Ridge discloses the fact that he has successfully produced a plastic product for 18+ years, he does not at any time say or show what the product is. It was only after some internet searching that I found that the product that he refers to is a 'cheek plate' used for military purposes. It would have made sense to show this product along with a few other molds that are shown in the video. A general introduction to mold-making which could be summed up in a five minute chat. I give it three stars because the little amount of information that is here is useful in producing silicone molds.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative video.......2006-10-09

This video was well worth the purchase. The instructor walks us through what we need (which you can easily pause and write down), and shows us step by step how to make a mold and subsequently the object. Not only was the host knowledgeable and nice to watch but it was a very clear and understandable lesson.

3 out of 5 stars gives you the basics.......2005-09-04

This video will give you the basics of what you need to know to make something plastic (wax, metal, rubber are mentioned but not covered.) It also gives you sources for materials, but only making things will teach you how to make what you want to make. It's a satisfactory introduction into mold making and though it's painfully clear Ben Ridge relied on a script, I'm satisfied with what I've gotten out of it and glad I bought it at amazon rather than another source for more money.

      5 out of 5 stars Impressed Customer.......2004-05-14

I taught courses in plastics technology at San Francisco State University for twenty years and I'm sure that my students throughout those years would have found this videotape and workbook of great value. Part of our curriculum involved mold making with silicone elastomers for prototypes and short run production. If Mr. Ridge's program were available at that time, I would have used it for our laboratory work. Mr. Ridge has absolutely captured the most important core concepts and has communicated those concepts with uncommon clarity and good instructional technique. There is no doubt that the use of 3D animation makes the process of information transfer just that much more easily understood. I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants a good basic introduction. Its the perfect way to get started, especially for those with little or no experience. Mr. Ridge does an especially good job with safety and material handling. Also, there are valuable references for advanced study and more complicated mold and prototype projects. This program is perfect for inventors, craftsmen, artists, and hobbyists in addition to industrial and commercial use. An excellent value that can be used by anyone interested in learning about mold making and casting methods for fun and profit !

5 out of 5 stars DO NOT PASS UP THIS VIDIO!.......2004-01-10

The Videotape "Reproducing Almost Anything With Plastic, Metal, Rubber & Ceramic" by Ben Ridge is OUTSTANDING! This very easy to understand videotape has superb animated graphics, simple instructions, and most importantly, "IT WORKS!" I was able to reproduce plastic prototype parts needed for an invention my first time. I went on to reproduce a clay sculptures I made, to cold cast bronze using the step by step techniques. I definitely would not hesitate to purchase this item; it is an exceptional value!

you can't get a better intro to doing dv films. if you thought all it took was buying a prosumer digital camera and mac, you're only half right. don't go out to dinner 2 or 3 times and invest in this gem. there's a reason why it's so hard to find used and that it still retains it's life on college booklists. good luck and make good stuff.

Fans of H.G. Wells's famous, genre-spawning science fiction novels may be startled to read his less-remembered but once bestselling The History of Mr. Polly. Its comically romping narrative voice is worlds away from the stern, melancholy tone of The Time Machine. Wells won fame for his apocalyptic, preachy books about the history of the future, but this history is strictly, as Mr. Polly would put it in his creatively cracked version of English, a series of "little accidentulous misadventures."

Mr. Alfred Polly is a dyspeptic, miserably married shopkeeper in what he terms that "Beastly Silly Wheeze of a hole!"--Fishbourne, England. He is inclined to spark arguments and slapstick calamity wherever he goes. Education was lost on him: when he left school at 14, "his mind was in much the same state that you would be in, dear reader, if you were operated upon for appendicitis by a well-meaning, boldly enterprising, but rather overworked and underpaid butcher boy, who was superseded towards the climax of the operation by a left-handed clerk of high principles but intemperate habits… the operators had left, so to speak, all their sponges and ligatures in the mangled confusion." Still, Polly's mind burns with eccentric genius, and his thwarted romantic heart beats him senseless. His despair results in the most amusing suicide attempt this side of Lisa Alther's novel Kinflicks. We won't spoil the surprise by saying precisely how his scheme misfires--and beware: the introduction gives it away. Note that you can't expect Polly to do anything right, and of course he'll become an inadvertent hero to the whole town. Then he promptly vanishes for further misadventure.

Many critics compare Mr. Polly's broad social satire to Dickens, but it smacks of Mark Twain and the dialect humor of Finley Peter Dunne's Mr. Dooley too. "I think it is one of my good books," Wells opined. What makes it so is Polly's heroic incompetence, his subversion of Edwardian propriety, and his bewildered unawareness that he is a revolutionary. --Tim Appelo

Mr. Wells brings the reader to meet Mr. Polly in this brilliant novel. As in all of H.G. Wells' works, the History of Mr. Polly is an enchanting tale with memorable characters brought to life.

The books he read during those fifteen years! He read everything he got except theology, and as he read his little unsuccessful circumstances vanished and the wonder of life returned to him, the routine of reluctant getting up, opening shop, pretending to dust it with zest, breakfasting with a shop egg underdone or overdone or a herring raw or charred, and coffee made Miriam's way and full of little particles, the return to the shop, the morning paper, the standing, standing at the door saying "How do!" to passers-by, or getting a bit of gossip or watching unusual visitors, all these things vanished as the auditorium of a theatre vanishes when the stage is lit.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Lost English Comic Novel.......2006-02-18

This one came out of nowhere. An absolutely brilliant comic novel. Like all great comic novels, it's never patronizing. Though the narrator places himself at a distance from Mr. Polly, he's never condescends. The tone is warm and witty, genuinely moving rather than sentimental. It's an honest look at the middle class, cased in a Romantic (as in Knights and Quests) narrative. Really, really great. Definitely worth your time.

The climactic and hilarious confrontation between Mr. Polly and the low-life ruffian Uncle Jim is so masterful that one might forget all the other comic gems included in this novel. At the same time, the reader will feel the power of Wells' legendary intelligence on every page. The History of Mr. Polly is loaded with thought-provoking observations on the topics of marraige, love, business, education, friendship, insurance fraud and -- most of all -- happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Is it Me?.......2001-08-03

A friend recommended this book to me after I explained how much fun I was having after leaving work in DC, returning to Minnesota, playing with my kids, joining a mountain biking team and genuinely enjoying my unemplyed status for 9 months. She said it was a philosophical book.

I spent the entire book trying to figure out why she thought of this book after I got through telling her how great my life was at the present. Mr. Polly clearly was not living a great life and always seemed to be on the wrong side of circumstance. It wasn't until the very end of the book that I realized the context my friend applied to my happenings.

The book, for it's strange accents and period vocabulary, was as riveting as any Grisham or Baldacci novel. I don't really know why - but it was. And the last few pages makes one think very hard about the meaning of life, which even for an unemployed child-at-heart, is important to do now and again.

                      5 out of 5 stars tragi-comedy.......2001-06-22

I finished reading this novella a few days ago. I must first admit that for the first 25 or so pages, I wasn't particulaly tuned into what the book was about. It is, as Wells mentioned, a history, so I was rather thrown at the beginning. Once I got the gist of it, particularly the gist of Mr. Polly and his eccentricities, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The only other Wells book I had read was the Island of Dr. Moreau, which, like his other romantic science-fiction novels he is famous for, was somewhat plot-driven rather than character-driven. This book, is, as the title would lead you to suspect, character-driven.

We begin our read with the bored, frustrated Mr. Polly, what he is feeling and how he deals with his life in general. Then the actual history starts, and Wells's beautiful, if somewhat excessive vocabulary answers the reader's question of who this Mr. Polly is. I found him to a be a very refreshing hero, being rather ordinary, and dealing with the concerns of anyone's life, particularly that of a middle-aged man. He does not "save the day" by perfoming any conventional (or even moral) acts, but this only makes him more real. Mr. Polly's passion for epithet is absolutely delightful, and gave me a great sense of pleasure to watch him go about his transformation.

This was a terriffic, merry little book, with a central character worthy of some of the finest in literature, at least from the limited literature I have read. Don't be fooled by the humorous facade however; there is a deeper message, one which will become relevant at some time in all our lives. It isn't one of Wells's most well known books, but it should be. A superb little gem.

4 out of 5 stars Tragic and comic and good.......2001-01-17

The History of Mr. Polly is less known than Well's sci-fi classics and it is a different kind of a book too. It pictures a tragicomic story of an unusual character - Mr. Polly. The story is quite funny, but there underneath is a deeper meaning. There are people like Mr. Polly around us. They drift through their lives wondering if it is them or the environment that determined their fate.

Although Wells and Dostoyevsky are extremely diferent, Mr. Polly in a certain way reminds me of some Dostoyevsky's characters.

Very interesting book. Very well read by Clive Swift.

If you like this book, I can recommend you to read both Invisible Man by Wells and Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky.

                                        Book Description

Joey loves walking to his hockey games with his dad. Often they talk about their favorite player, Boston Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr. One day, Joey has an accident on the ice and ends up in the hospital with a broken leg. During his stay, Joey thrills to the Bruins’ run for the playoffs and––miraculously––gets a visit from none other than Bobby Orr himself! Orr tells him about all the injuries he’s had, shares advice on the game of hockey, and even gives Joey one of his sticks. When Joey leaves the hospital he gets to watch his hero win the 1972 Stanley Cup at Boston Garden. Based on a true story from the life of hockey legend Bobby Orr, this book relays an important message about getting over hurdles and setbacks.
