Snapshots: The Eye Of The Century
Manufacturer: Hatje Cantz Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Book Description
Description: "You press the button, we do the rest." Kodak used this slogan in ads for the first box cameras, introduced by George Eastman in 1888. From then on, virtually anyone could take pictures--the snapshot was born! Without exception, the amateur photos presented in Snapshots: The Eye of the Century capture what are essentially ordinary moments--yet every trace of banality disappears once they are removed from the context of personal biography. Sometimes the moment is right, and art just "happens," in the form of double or multiple exposures, slipped horizons, or curious details that enter the picture frame because the camera moved just as the shutter was released. Christian R. Skrein-Bumballa, an artist and a former professional photographer, has tracked down and collected thousands of these treasures, which can be viewed as part of our visual heritage. His impressive selection of photographs is here arranged thematically, and at its heart we find the essentials of the human condition: joy and pain, visualized in the decisive moment in which history stands still for a fraction of a second. Snapshots features the most aesthetically notable and otherwise curious photographs from the S.A.S. Snapshots Archiv Skrein, a collection of nearly one million snapshots from all over the world.

Burn, Bitchy, Burn
Roberta Gregory Manufacturer: Fantagraphics Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1560974923 |
Book Description
The popular character Bitchy Bitch, star of her own Oxygen Network cartoon, returns to rant and rave her way through modernand medievalsociety. Included in this collection of Gregory's legendary Naughty Bits comic book series is the classic "Fallout," in which Bitchy Bitch believes she is going into menopause, causing her to remember moments of her youth. She flashes back to her childhood in the 1960s, complete with memories of bomb shelters, school, and backstabbing kiddies. Unfortunately, she realizes that not much has changed from the playground to the office. "Adult-erated" provides more insight into the past of comicdom's only permanently PO'd and PMS'd protagonist, focusing on Bitchy's post-college years, including her first apartment. Follow her as she journeys into adulthood, dealing with sex, responsibility, and the tedium of corporate America. In "Sylvia's Week," Bitchy is on vacation and the spotlight turns to her co-worker Sylvia. As a devotee to the New Age movement, Sylvia tries to use crystals and meditation to deal with the stresses of everyday office life and her dead weight of a husband. The title strip, "Burn, Bitch, Burn," centers on "Witchy Bitch," a 12th Century medicine woman and dead ringer for Bitchy Bitch. Accused of being a witch and sentenced to burning at the stake, Witchy feels no less oppressed by her society than her future counterpart, to say the least. But is she really a witch? That's a question the villagers find out the answer to the hard way, through a little thing called the Black Plague.
These classic Gregory strips are supplemented with an all-new strip created especially for this collection, making Burn, Bitchy, Burn a smoldering standard-bearer of feminist-themed comic art.

Book Description
John Murray was the intimate friend and correspondent of Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Canning, Southey, the Disraelis, Campbell, Crabbe, Hallam, Croker, Milman, Washington Irving, Madame de Stael; as well as of the early editors of the Quarterly, Gifford, Coleridge, and Lockhart; and many original letters from these authors are in this book. The memoirs, and especially the correspondence of John Murray and his friends, are of value as giving a full picture of the literature and principal men of letters of the first half of the 19th century. Indeed, going still farther back - to the life and correspondence of John Murray's father - they include, to a certain extent, the literature of the times of Dr. Johnson, Dr. Langhorne, Dr. Cartwright, and others.

Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses is the story of Bruce Feiler's 10,000-mile trek from Mount Ararat to Mount Nebo, undertaken for reasons he did not understand at the outset and accompanied by a companion who was very nearly a stranger. In the book's first chapter, in characteristically understated style, Feiler suggests a viable parallel to his journey:Abraham was not originally the man he became. He was not an Israelite, he was not a Jew. He was not even a believer in God--at least initially. He was a traveler, called by some voice not entirely clear that said: Go, head to this land, walk along this route, and trust what you will find.
Feiler, a fifth-generation American Jew from the South, had felt no particular attachment to the Holy Land. Yet during his journey, Feiler's previously abstract faith grew more grounded. ("I began to feel a certain pull from the landscape.... It was a feeling of gravity. A feeling that I wanted to take off all my clothes and lie facedown in the soil.") Feiler's attentiveness, intelligence, and adventurousness enliven every page of this book. And the lessons he learned about the relationship between place and the spirit will be useful for readers of every religious tradition that finds its origins in the Bible. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Feeling disconnected from the religious community he had known as a child, Bruce Feiler set out on a perilous, 10,000–mile journey across the Middle East to discover the roots of the Bible. Traveling through three continents, five countries, and four war zones, Feiler is the first person ever to complete such a journey. Camping in the desert, crossing the Red Sea, climbing Mt. Sinai, and interviewing bedouin and pilgrims alike, Feiler attempts to answer the question: Is the Bible just an abstraction, some book gathering dust, or is it a living, breathing entity with relevance to contemporary life? Along with prominent Israeli archaeologist Avner Goren, Feiler treks though Turkey, Israel, the Palestinian territories, Egypt, the Sinai, and Jordan visiting the actual places where some of history's most famous events took place, from the mountain where Noah's ark landed (Feiler meets a man who claims to have found the ark) to the site of the legendary burning bush. He visits the desert outpost in Turkey where Abraham first heard the words of God and sleeps (illegally) on the summit where Moses overlooked the Promised Land. In each place, he gathers the latest archaeological research about the site and sits down to read the stories in their natural surroundings. With vivid, lively prose, he explores how geography affects the larger narrative of the Bible and ultimately realizes how much these places––and his experience––have affected his faith.
