1 out of 5 stars Maybe if you've never read a comic before.......2006-12-13

I expected to learn something about creating comics, art, or the comics industry by reading this book, in the end I learned nothing. Instead of any insight into writing or communication, the classroom scenes focus on things that you should have learned in high school English (like a basic story arc) or that you can learn by reading one comic (pages are laid out into panels, panels should have backgrounds, comic book scripts are like movie scripts, etc). As for learning about the comics industry you find out that if you go to a comics convention you can have a professional artist critque your work, which I believe I learned in the letters section of Robin when I was 12. Oh, well I guess that you also learn that if you take Bob and Mark's class you might get published regardless of how bad your artwork is.

Please note that nearly everyone else who has reviewed this book knows the authors personally and has taken their class.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Variety, an Excellent Read........2004-09-08

This book was being developed when I graduated from The Savannah College of Art and Design, so I was anticipating its release for quite some time. Well, I've finally gotten a copy and I must say it was worth the wait.

This book is all about variety. The artwork is done by a number of SCAD students, all of whom have a wide variety of styles. This gives each chapter a different look and feel, which keeps the visual aspect fresh as the story develops. This also serves as hard evidence as to just how different actual students can be in their approach to drawing comics. As Bob says in the Introduction, this shows that there's no "one way" to create comics.

The variety of characters in this book wonderfully reflects the variety of students that one might typically find in a Sequential Art classroom. The different ordeals, quirks and attitudes expressed by the characters in this book are things that I witnessed first-hand in nearly every Sequential Art class that I took.

And the variety of subjects from within the realm of Sequential Art is covered in the book thoroughly and to the point. The characters in the book learn about things like penciling, inking and scripting by working on helpful assignments that were really given to me and other actual Sequential Art students.

Another way that this book is all about variety is in the variety of people who can get a lot of use out of this book. From teachers and professors who'd like to go into teaching Sequential Art, to people who are teaching themselves and would like a fun way to learn. Also, it's a great book for people who just want to read a solid, fun graphic novel with a great story. I definitely highly recommend this book!

            5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-02-19

This book hits too close to home, as I am a student of both Mark and Bob's, and I relive certain class periods just reading this. The stereotypes of the students are exact, and although they did not have time to put everything in I think it summerizes what one learns in Sequential classes or art school in general. The different art styles each chapter is in is a neat effect, as it helps give the reader the impression of all the different points of view. It is a great tool for understanding comics. A must read for comic book artists and fans!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, informative and fun to read.......2004-02-10

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in writing or drawing comics. It's not as in-depth as Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics," but it isn't meant to be. You'll meet Mark Kneece and Bob Pendarvis, two professors at the Savannah College of Art and Design (both of whose classes I've taken and very much enjoyed), and their students (ingenious parodies of the different people I've met in my classes over the past two years). We learn what they learn as the story unfolds, in the form of a graphic novel, with art by former students. There's even a special bonus story at the end by Bob Pendarvis himself, which is, all by itself, worth the cover price. Bob is truly a master of his craft and, if I may say, a handsome and suave man-about-town.

The story itself is very cleverly done. You effectively become a member of the class, hearing the things Mark and Bob say to the students and looking at their actual assignments. But it isn't as dry as most other books of its kind; the class is part of an overall story, and the characters are believable and interesting. Having been a student at SCAD for the past two years, I find the portayals particularly hilarious, because each and every character has his own counterpart in every class I've taken here. My favorites are the two who think they're already great comic artists and so never listen to a word Mark or Bob say (and, of course, we get to see the assignments they hand in, which are priceless).

The art, by former students at SCAD, has its ups and downs, but overall it's a good testament to Mark, Bob, and all the other Sequential Art professors' teaching abilities. Not only is it drawn well, but it reads pretty flawlessly, something budding comic artists know isn't easy to achieve. (Although, that it reads so well is probably largely the work of Mark Kneece, the thinking man's comics writer, a bastion of intellect and savvy, and also a generous giver of A's.) In particular, Ramanda Kamarga's section is fantastic. And I have to mention the cover art, by SCAD professor Julie Collins, a great teacher, a hugely gifted artist, and a pretty cool chick besides-it's an awesome cover, is what I mean to say.

If you're at all interested in comics, either creating them or just reading them, you'll find this an enjoyable and educational read. If you're a prospective SCAD student, you have no excuse not to order it right now.

            5 out of 5 stars I win!.......2004-02-10

Haha! I'm the first reviewer! Actually... I didn't even read it through all the way yet. But it's drawn by a bunch of students, so if nothing else, there's variety. Bob seems to get angry a lot. How odd. And there's sort of a plot. Mostly it's about making comics. Sometimes it's a little confusing. Probably because it's different artists, but it gets a little choppy. Well, Norris is about to close, so I have to go.
Edit: I think there are too many characters for the length of the book. And since they change appearance (sometimes radically) every chapter, it can be really hard to keep them straight. Having them call each other by name more might have helped (also not having two named Jason), since what happens is that instead of individuals, I was keeping track of them as the goups jerk boys, girls, and others/transvestite (which I completely missed the first time I read through it). Then again, the students' main purpose is to teach about comics and not be soap stars, so it's certainly sufficient.

              Book Description

New Vocabularies in Film Semiotics provides a comprehensive lexicon of semiotic concepts, defining over 500 critical terms.

The authors address key aspects of contemporary semiotic and cultural debate--for example Metz's semiotics, Genette's narratology, the feminism of Mary Ann Doane, and Bakhtinian concepts. The book explores linguistically-oriented terminology in cinema studies; the semiotics of film narrative; the psycho-semiology of the cinema; and intertextuality, discourse, and transtextuality. References to individual films drawn from the work of a wide range of directors including Orson Welles, D.W. Griffiths, Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Cocteau, and Chantal Akerman illustrate the concepts under discussion.

Although especially geared to the needs of film students, New Vocabularies in Film Semiotics is an impressive guide that will be useful for scholars in all areas of the arts, philosophy, and literature where an awareness of semiotic terminology and methodology has become indispensible to serious theoretical work.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An academic treatment for an academic audience.......2006-05-01

As the book's title implies, it is intended for an academic audience--one interested in knowing how semiotics, which has traditionally been applied to the written word, relates to film. Since this book is searchable, a casual perusal of the back cover and table of contents should be sufficient to alert the reader to the book's style as well as as its highly academic treatment of content. Nor does it disappoint the serious student in this regard. Relevant theorists and theory are thoroughly examined. (Daniel Chandler's online introduction to Semiotics should be most welcome to someone unfamiliar with it.)

The book is useful to the serious student of film--how it negotiates meaning between creator/s and viewer/s. Semiotics, despite the author's claim to be a discipline, is more of an analytical method of how a cultural artifact like film goes about its communication work. Like any analytical method, it has developed a specific vocabulary that has been refined and modified over time via the input of various theorists and schools of thought. This can make reading a bit tedious, especially for someone new to the language, history, and concepts.

Ultimately, however, this book and others like it, are intended to shed light on how movies communicate and what makes one "good" and another not so good. For anyone seriously interested to the answers to these questions who isn't simply intellectually lazy, mastery of terminology is extremely useful and hardly a waste of time. Easy answers given in everyday language is available but for a very different audience than the one for which this book was written.

I gave the book 4 stars because the authors don't make much effort to make their explanations more accessible to those without a PhD, which they could easily have done with a little effort. To their credit, however, they do use some techniques such as bolding for new terminology. However, they would probably have fared better had they demonstrated expertise in creating text that is more "user-friendly."

2 out of 5 stars Beginning of the end.......2005-01-01

If you've ever sat through film studies and wondered what on earth was going on, don't fret.

There is probably something to be gained from studying how we watch films, but unfortunately most of those engaged in the world of film studies as academics aren't interested. Instead, many are content to wallow in unreadable texts with long, impressive terms that, in the end, have little at all to do with films.

Studying modes of production, the words of the filmmakers themselves, trends, etc, we can figure out a lot about films. But that's not good enough for some people because it's too straightforward and obvious. Instead, an entire vocabulary needs to be invented--poststructuralism, film semiotics, etc, etc, in order to mask the quite obvious fact that we still don't know a thing.

If we had any concrete understanding of how films 'work' on our minds, then someone could write a book that a 12 year old could read and understand. Instead, we get books like this: inpenetrable, heavy, intellectual tripe.

If you believe there is actually a 'theory' to film, and that such a 'theory' can be applied to a large body of film and work, then this might be for you. If you're more interested in the real world, on planet Earth, you may want to avoid the subject altogether...

If you could give someone the power to do or create anything they want, who would you give it to last? Most people who really wanted it, desperate power-seekers, politicians, media barons, Cliff Richard, etc. Oh yeah, and Groo would be just before them on last to get this power.

It would have been better if the evil wizard had this magic amulet of power (well, or a Green Lantern), but with Groo, it is certainly entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Groo causing devestation as usual.......2002-11-03

              Groo Inferno

In this collection there's a magic amulet that grants every wish which falls into the hands of Groo the Barbarian - OH MY GOD! From there mayhem erupts as various parties strive to gain control of the amulet or at best get it out of Groo's hands into anyone else's hands (anyone would be better than Groo!). As the introductory episode shows - Groo is the worse thing on earth to get involved with, especially when you confuse him! Included are the sorceresses Abra and Kadabra - oh, I mean Arba and Dakarba- , the sage and his dog with no name, the Minstrel, Arcadio the best warrior on earth, and assorted fools who've never learned that the best way to get anything out of Groo is to RUN AS FAR AWAY FROM HIM AS YOU CAN!

Note: the printing quality is generally okay to very good for the series, but this is generally a collection for Groo fans and comic book fans. The binding on some of my copies is broken (these are soft backs) and the print is now and then not the greatest. As a fan, I bought every collection I could, and enjoy them despite this! Not though for long-term pristine collectors though.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the collector.......2000-06-18

I have collected Groo comics since I was a kid, and this reprint of Groo the wanderer numbers 33 through 36. Not some of my favorite Groo tales but very funny. I did like "The Amulet", wich is in 2 parts and continued from Groo number 26 wich would be in "The Groo Garden".

5 out of 5 stars Scary and Wonderful.......2005-08-25

I'm thinking about going to medical school, and this book was recommended to me to get a flavor for what life is like as a medical student - particularly a slightly older, female, non-traditional student.

The book is frankly scary if you're considering medicine as a career - the overwhelming stress and forced maturation she describes is daunting. On the other hand, it's probably very realistic for someone going through the process while juggling a family. Her writing is accessible and insightful, and at times I found myself identifying completely with her and her thoughts on the field (though, granted, in some ways the book is outdated). A book I will likely re-read.

The person who said she was run-of-the-mill clearly didn't identify at all with her, which is not a failure of her writing so much as their imagination, especially given that they recommended Melvin Konner's "Becoming a doctor", which is a far less eloquent/evocative book.

4 out of 5 stars Worth your time.......2005-07-28

For anyone who has considered attending medical school, this is an insightful tale. It's a realistic look at medical school from someone who is not necessarily a perfect student. I enjoyed this book very much.

              3 out of 5 stars Interesting Book.......2002-07-13

I am a pre-med Junior in college and I enjoyed this book. It gives you a look into medical school, although it is through her sometimes negative or critical point of view. Interesting and easy to read.

              5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book.......2002-06-22

A fascinating well-written book, which will be of interest to anyone who has experience of hospitals and medicine, whether as professional or patient.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Pre-Meds.......2001-12-02

I am a biology major/ pre-med student at UCLA, though it is through my English class that I found this book. Simply put, this novel made me think. I continuously wondered, "can i handle 'dog dissection'... will I be able to memorize all of the countless facts about all these rare diseases?" An entire section of the book is devoted to bioethical issues, including one essay entitled, "DNR," (do not resuscitate). I began questioning myself, "is it fair to bring someone back just so that they can suffer longer with the same disease?" If you plan on going to medical school, reading this book is a must, and a joy; it is perfect for pre-meds.

              4 out of 5 stars Paul Greenberg's Lifetime Influences.......2004-06-24

With a Pulitzer Prize under his belt and more than 35 years of writing experience, journalist/editor Paul Greenberg is one of America's finest. He has the ability to write in a candid, yet respectful manner and his style is engaging and entertaining. This book, published in 1992, reveals some of Greenberg's influential roots, explaining how he got where he is and the people and events that have shaped his writing and his life.

Greenberg touches on many important influences in this book. In particular, he makes mention of his family and how his parents helped to instill certain values within him as a young man growing up in Louisiana and then Arkansas. Greenberg also points out his Jewish religious upbringing and his small town roots in the South as major contributors to his life and, hence, to his views and writing.

Some of Greenberg's opinions presented in the journalistic pieces included in this book will not sit well with certain readers. Greenberg's views are mostly, but not entirely, conservative in nature. But they deviate from this course on many occasions, which is part of the reason why Greenberg often refers to himself as an "ideologically unreliable conservative". You cannot really place a label on Greenberg's political ideology, since many of his opinions are compatible with different political philosophies.

Since this book is comprised of a collection of previous writings, it doesn't have the smoothness that some readers expect and demand. Instead, it changes direction from time to time, with articles included from many decades of writing, sorted into seven broad categories: family, religion, writing, small towns, the South, the American nation, and baseball. Greenberg selected the articles for this book, based on how closely they fit into these categories and how significant they were to his life and his profession.

This is a very intriguing read from an intriguing man. Even though I don't always see eye to eye with Greenberg, I still enjoy his writing. If nothing else, I can always count on Greenberg to remain civil and respectful when he writes and to hold my attention for the duration of the article. And this book is no exception. It presents some of Greenberg's most powerful influences on his life, showing what factors, great and small, helped to form the opinions of this award- winning journalist.

              4 out of 5 stars My Impressions.......2000-01-04

Pine Bluff Arkansas is the background for fifty four of Paul Greenberg's most personal pieces. These are the experiences that shaped Greenberg's life including family, religion and baseball. "Entirely Personal" is a collection of short pieces that help the reader to understand what has shaped Greenberg's editorials. This is an appraisal of how his enviroment set the scene for his writing.
