Book Description
From the indigenous simple huts known as bohios to elegant neoclassical villas, from the grand palaces of the Spanish occupation to luxurious quintas or country mansions, all the secrets and enchantments of Cuban life, past and present, remain intact today in the city of Havana, in the towns of Trinidad, Camagüey, and Santiago de Cuba, and in the countryside. This superbly illustrated book reveals a Cuban architectural heritage that is often ignored or hidden from the view of visitors to the island. Drawing upon local archives, museum records, memoirs, diaries, and other native sources, Llilian Llanes describes Cuba's architectural history from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth. The evolution of Cuban architecture, influenced by climate and social conditions, parallels the cultural, political, and economic history of the island, and the houses and their decoration reflect periods of greater or lesser prosperity, as well as social inequalities. Courtyards, balconies, galleries, balustrades, grilles, and louvered doors: the evocative photographs, all in color, illustrate the subject magnificently with exterior and interior views plus close-ups of details. Extended captions explain the development of architectural features and the houses themselves over centuries and provide fascinating details of Cuban daily life, customs, and pastimes. 168 color photographs and a map.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book, beautiful memories........2004-05-12
I purchased this book for my husband, he was forced to flee Cuba at the age of 5. He has a vast collection of books on Cuba and Cuban-American issues, and this is a very welcomed addition. The photographs are lovely, and when viewed by our Cuban relatives, it brought back lots of memories. Lovely as an art or historical book.
french version available in www.amazon.fr.......2001-02-05
both versions of the book, in english and french, are excellent. however, there are some 'minor' differences, for example the cover. there is also a spanish version that shares the french version cover design.
Wonderful Photography.......2000-11-08
This is a fabulous book with exquisite pictures. The photography is marvelous and it gives the reader an opportunity to see the nice range of architectural styles that can be found in Cuba.
My review is not yet available.......1999-05-25
I'd like to see the original version ( in French?) I know it is by Editions Arthaud. Please inform me about this version. Is it on a website?

Book Description
6 3/8 x 10 1/4 200 black-and-white illustrations North American Distribution ART TECHNIQUE Wally Wood (1927-1981) was one of the most prolific and influential figures in fantasy and science fiction illustration. This legendary cartoonist's works include ground-breaking tales for such classic comics as Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, and Weird Fantasy, as well as fan-favorite superhero work on T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and Daredevil. When he became MAD Magazine's first star artist, he had already revolutionized comic books with the sci-fi work that put him on Entertainment Weekly's all-time best list. Wally Wood Sketchbook reveals rare, never-before-published works of this artistic genius. It spans the artist's impressive three-decade career, from his difficult boyhood in Minnesota to his stories for classic comic characters to his numerous awards and citations. An essay from comics historian James Steranko, and personal discussions with Wood's closest colleagues-as well as a rare interview with Wally Wood himself-provide fascinating insight into the life and talent of this consummate artist. Features Introduction by Bruce Timm (artist/producer, Batman Beyond)
Customer Reviews:
Lot's of great drawings from a master.......2006-11-18
Anything with Wood is a masterpiece. This is an excellent addition to anyone's collection of Wood art. Wally Wood was a master of cartooning. He was a great artist that deserves mention amongst the notables of great art. Squ Tront and Russ Cochran's ec reprints provide the public with much of Wood's work. However, his sketchbooks are hard to find. His sketchbooks reveal the creative genius he had. His suicide is a great tragedy. I saw him at a convention in 1980. I noticed at that time he was quite despondent. It's an aweful thing he didn't have anyone to talk to. May God rest his soul.
OK little collection of Wood sketches.......2003-05-05
Wood is known as one of the early Mad magazine artists, but it's nice to see some preliminary sketches of his other work here. With examples of various genres, including both ink and pencil drawings, this slim volume doesn't really have his best stuff. Woody's work has a slightly stiff and old-fashioned quality, but if you're interested in illustration or science fiction (especially of the 1950's), this is passable. A lot of weird and absurd images, obsessively rendered. I was struck by the long hours he must have put in. The bio describes the sad end of his life. For better examples of Wood's cartooning, get reprints of '50s era Mad magazines. For his classic sci-fi illustrations, "Against the Grain: Mad Artist Wallace Wood" has more to offer than this book, but it's much more expensive.
Wally wood Knows Sci-Fi.......2000-06-25
This book is filled with wonderful drawings. I had never heard of wally wood before but as an artist myself was very inspired by his amazing work. This book shows just how ahead of his time wally wood was and can be an inspiration to any sci-fi fan.

Book Description
This fascinating, full-color volume brings together Meyer's photographs and his essays from ZoneZero, the international photography Web site he founded, along with other experts' commentary on his work. In one section, Meyer deconstructs some of his vivid, magical realist-style works, taking the reader inside his creative process. Students and admirers of Meyer's work, those interested in documentary photography or contemporary Mexico, and anyone interested in the timely intellectual questions he raises will be drawn to this engaging and beautiful book. Internationally regarded photographer
Pedro Meyer began his career as a journalist and documentary photographer, and in many ways that is still his primary form of expression, although his work often crosses what others perceive as boundaries between truth and fiction. Meyer contends that photographers have always manipulated the truth to elicit certain responses. Sometimes, of course, the intent is to deceive, whether digitally through software programs like Photoshop, or by simply positioning the camera in a certain way to include or exclude parts of the picture, or in the darkroom, adjusting the lighting or cropping people in or out of a shot. At other times, Meyer argues, a transformed image can present a more profound truth than could be captured in a single exposure, just as fiction sometimes conveys more truth than simple reportage. The task for viewers says Meyer, is to question why and how images are made, and in the process uncover the real truth in those images.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2005-09-06
This book was not what I expected, from the cover forward. The cover image shown on amazon is not the actual cover of the book. There are a few outstanding photos intermingled with some great photos and some mediocre photos. The layout and design of this book could have greatly enhanced the content. The format is too small for the number of photos, giving it a cluttered appeance and overwhelming feel when reading. I was not looking for a "pretty" coffee table book, but I was looking for something visually stunning, informative, and inspiring to my own work.

Book Description
At long last, a radical new management philosophy is here. It cuts through the nonsense and tells it like it is. Stress is the answer. Don't be wasteful or careless with this precious resource. Cultivate stress, grow it, develop it. Stress is Success. Rohan Candappa shows the way to become, by far, the most annoying manager in the office. Remember an employee under stress is an employee undermined. A Talented Manager Shouldn't Only Talk Out Of His Mouth -- Never let lack of knowledge on any particular subject fool you into thinking that you can't give your opinions. At Least There's One Person Around Here Who's Talking Sense -- Learn to love the sound of your own voice. The Waiting Game -- Always keep people waiting outside your office for at least 20 minutes. Especially for prearranged meetings. The Big Picture -- At all costs, avoid considering the Big Picture. Small pictures, and poring over their details in eye-straining effort, are far more useful when it comes to generating stress. Humorist Rohan Candappa earned his M.B.A., Master of Being Annoying, with honors. Study the lessons, learn the techniques, and employ the strategies to bully coworkers into submission by the sheer force of being supremely irritating. This hilarious little book will delight anyone who has ever worked in an office setting.

Book Description
This absorbing study of Elizabeth Gaskell's early life up to her marriage in 1832 is based almost entirely on new evidence. Also, using parish records, marriage settlements, property transfers, wills, record office documents, letters, journals and private papers, John Chapple has recreated the background of one of the nineteenth century's greatest novelists.
Customer Reviews:
Elizabeth Gaskell.......2003-05-23
I see I'm the first person to review this book, and I can understand why. No one else has read it. That's because it's almost unreadable. The type is very small. The author cannot have omitted a single scrap of his copious research. His selection skills need honing. People with only remote connections to EG, and many with no connection at all, are discussed in tedious detail.
This book is definitely not for the common reader. The details may interest other scholars, and the author is probably justifiably proud of all the new facts he's unearthed, but these do not make for compelling, or even interesting, reading by ordinary fans of literary biographies.

Customer Reviews:
A Wholesome Read!.......2003-12-03
This mystery might not have you on the edge of your seat, but it's a page turner nonetheless. A good wholesome read. Great to snuggle up with on a cold winter night.
Could not put it down!.......2003-10-26
Unraveling the mystery of the snowmobile bandit kept me up half of the night. The situations were very realistic and the author did a great job of adding suspense in the mytery and in the romance between Sheriff Rodd and Nurse Wendy. I just had to keep reading until the end.
