R. Hunsaker review of: The Master Builders: Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright .......2007-01-16
For those interested in the development of American architecture, this is an excellent source. It spans the works of the 3 great architects who laid down the guiding principles for modern architecture in the United States and shows the evolution of each. Many of their beautiful works are pictured and described by the author, a former architecture school dean. The principles involved and aesthetic qualities are elaborated. It gives an appreciation of how many current architectural styles evolved and also comments briefly on some of the failings of today. It also traces the interplay between artistic movements - Art Noveau, Cubism, Impressionism, de Stijl - and architecture.
The book is well written, highly literary and frequently humorous. It is enjoyable and educational for anyone with an interest in contemporary architecture and the artistic geniuses who created it as it came about in the United States thru the 20th century.
The author plays favorites........2004-07-20
This book seeks to profile three architects of worldwide influence, each of whom has profoundly influenced the built environment we experience today. It provides rich glimpses into the architectural environment of the early 20th century, and tells a compelling tale of three architects who each shook off the vine-covered frippery of art nouveau in their own way. It's a good book, but upon re-reading it last year, the author's clear bias towards (almost hero-worship of) Le Corbusier came through much more strongly than when I was a neophyte in college. The book paints Mies Van der Rohe as a cold German technocrat with a talent only for efficiency; Frank Lloyd Wright as a pure iconoclast and egomaniac whose vision was so ideosyncratic that it had only limited influence; and Le Corbusier as a genre-defying revolutionary hero who singlehandedly rescued and reinvented architecture as art. In my opinion, at least, each of these judgments are almost entirely wrong. Even if you kind of agree with Blake's pantheon, the hagiography of Corbu gets a bit embarrasing in places. A great book for the history and context, but I would certainly hope that this book wouldn't be the last thing you read about any of these men.
Touches the 3 masters topically.......2002-08-23
Maybe the only book that attempts to compare (rather...state) the big 3. However I think that it degenerates to being a history book that just states facts that are already available in any monograph on each. There is less commentary and more facts. I guess it is a biggeners book to understand who these men were and what projects they did in their lifetime. The only good thing is that this seems to be the only place where you can read about them as a kind of a time-line.....realizing how each one affected the other.
I wish there was a more discussion and comparison/differentiation of the kind of space that these 3 were talking about and a more indepth analysis of their ideologies. Guess we have to wait for someone else to take that risky venture.
Excellent review of three amazing lives........2002-01-24
This book provides the reader not only with deep insight into these three great pillars of the 20th century, but also helps one understand their influence on art as well. One can see the bridge between their buildings and artists like Braque, Rothko, and those associated with De Stijl. I think it is a fine book for those who may not be familiar with these three men. It is highly readable and recommended!
An excellent book to start.......2001-07-20
This book by Peter Blake is very good if you are just beginning to know about these three iconic architects. It has everything someone who is not an architect could need to know who Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright were. If you want to go deep into the career of these architects, study their lives and works, this is a first step, and a very good one, but only that.
It is well written, entertaining and true. As a teacher, I would recommend it to architecture students as mandatory reading, best if read in the second or third year of their college years.
Even as it is a basic book, I have it on my night table.

ASIN: B0007H5L28 |
Book Description
Priscilla Hauser, the queen of decorative painting, and Boris Grafov, a Russian-born painter whose native village is world-renowned for its art, have produced a luminous follow-up to their Russian Folk Art Painting. This radiant new volume features bright arrangements of flowers, fruits, and leaves, bordered in gold or silver filigree, and set off by a black lacquered surface. It’s a style with a timeless appeal, and Hauser and Grafov provide comprehensive instructions for creating ten beautiful patterns on furniture and other objects. All the necessary skills are explained, with plenty of advice on preparing the surface, wielding the brush, and mixing colors. Start by painting the intricate borders of wreath and linked motifs, then, make the designs more luscious with every colorful layer.

Russian Decorative Painting - Techniques & Projects Made Easy.......2007-08-01
A book by Priscilla Hauser and Boris Grafov which is beautifully presented but I think a beginner would have difficulty with the projects. There are pages dealing with some of the "basics" (such as brush loading, palette preparation etc) which would not be necessry for a painter with some experience. What is helpful to anyone new to the Zhostovo style are the techniques required to paint the leaves and flowers and this is shown in close-up and color very well. There are 10 projects featured and the book finishes with a superb gallery of completed pieces from various collections and these are an inspiration in themselves. The paintings throughout the book are in oils.
Book Description
Once upon a time, before the advent of the indie rocker and the alternative chick, before primitivism became a style trend and tattoo parlors set up shop on the good avenues, tattoos were the secret language of a restricted world, a world of criminals. The photographs, drawings and texts published here are part of a collection of 3,600 tattoos accumulated over a lifetime by prison attendant Danzig Baldayev. Tattoos were his entrance into a secret world, a world in which he acted as an ethnographer, recording the rituals of a closed society. The icons and tribal languages he documented are artful, distasteful, sexually explicit and sometimes just simply strange, reflecting as they do the lives and mores of convicts. Skulls, swastikas, harems of naked women, a smiling Al Capone, assorted demons, medieval knights in armor, daggers sheathed in blood, benign images of Christ, mosques and minarets, sweet-faced mothers and their babies, armies of tanks, and a horned Lenin--these are the signs with which this hidden world of people mark and identify themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2007-04-10
Excellent photos and artwork with clear, concise explanations. An excellent collector's item, but not really a suggested "coffee table" book. There's quite a bit of nudity, graphic political and sexual imagery, and one heaping dose of harsh reality.
Better then the first..........2007-03-24
Great original photography and a whole new look at tattoos...super raw, but oh so cool....not your average tattoo book....but a must own..
Truly an inside look at an exclusive society.......2007-03-14
When I bought this book, I flipped through the pages and looked at all the tattoos before reading anything. The tattoos were interesting enough, but I had to read the introduction to understand the culture that was molded wholly around the artwork itself. This encyclopedia gives a detailed account of what having a tattoo means in the culture of Russian prisoners. In many societies, tattoos mean very little. Many people get them on a whim, or go into a parlor knowing they want one, but not knowing what they want (probably a butterfly on her back, or a tribal band around his arm). This book explains how tattoos among Russian inmates serve as their resumes--who they are, what they've done, where they rank in the society, who they serve, how they feel about the state... the culture made possible by the tattoos is extremely fascinating, but you have to either be an inmate or read a book written by a credible source (read: this book) to find out about all the facets of it.
good book.......2006-03-28
this is an excellent book for those interested in tattoo art from other countries. this book has a lot of sketches describing each tattoo and its meaning. it also has actual pictures of russian inmates with their facinating prison tattoos. i would not recomend this book for anyone under 18 since some of the tattoos/sketches of tattoos are extremely violent and pornograhic. But facinating at the same time.
This book is not for the faint of heart.......2005-08-24
well, first of all, the book is shocking and distrubing. the book is mainly made up of drawings. These drawings are actual tattoos and many of them are accompanied by a brief story about the persons lifestyle or conviction. There are about, lets say 30 photos at the most, there is some nudity in the photos, male and female. Some of tattoo drawings are extremely XXX in context.Yeah its hard to beleive that someone would tattoo a graphic image of some sex acts on their skin. this book does have a lengthly introduction about the meanings of the whole Thieves World tattoos, there are pages also showing the meanings of the Finger ring tattoos which was quite interesting. The book mainly states that behind the meaning of alot of the tattoos its a personal expression against the soviet system, plain and simple.
The book gives you a feel about how it was to be caught up in the soviet system. I bought the book because i have been around the whole mexican gang scene and i have seen the tattoos that many of them get, and i just wanted to see the similarites of the criminal underworlds. Its all the same around the world.this
book will offend you no matter what, If you really want to still
learn more about the about the tattoos, get both of the books that amazon has here.

Book Description
The Russian people have a profound attachment to their land. Boris Pasternak paid tribute to the millions of dead who made the sacred land of Russia live again and blossom: "The price Russia paid in blood, sorrow, in tears increases Russians' love for their land. Writers, musicians, and artists have all nourished their talent with the fruits of passion that lie deep at the root of the Russian soul."
This book is designed to help the reader share in the discovery of the beloved Russian land. It includes paintings showing country gentlemen and sometimes serfs toiling like slaves until the late 19th century, when they were liberated and at last were ble to own property and harvest their own crops. This richly illustrated book reproduces paitings from the 18th through the 20th century. Pastoral moments, rural scenes, and peasants starined expressions reveal in vivid detail what life was like on Russian land.

Young Bob: John Cohen's Early Photographs of Bob Dylan
ASIN: 0821225340 |
Book Description
Early Dylan features the work of three master photographers who were there from the beginning and were given unique access to Bob Dylan and his private life. Many of the eighty photographs featured portray a young Dylan at the start of his career in the 1960s. In the extended caption section each photographer reveals details of his experiences.
Customer Reviews:
Great Photos of Dylan.......1999-12-29
I agree with the other reviewer about this book. I've seen most of the work by Marshall & Kramer. Not to take away from them but the work by Feinstein was primarally new to me(except for the Live 66 photography) and i only wish there was more of his work. All and all, though, a great book of photographs of a true artist.
Maybe the best Dylan picture book ever!.......1999-10-13
A great book freaturing many great photos of Dylan during his first "prime". The photographs by Marshall and Kramer have been in print since the dawn of time, a big disappionment from those two photographers. Barry Fienstein was along for most of the 5/66 tour and his pictures are mostly brand new and very very exiting. I was a little disappionted by the lack of preformance pictures included, but that's a minor gripe. Overall an essential picture book for any Dylan fan, new or old.
Note: Barry Feinstein's pictures graced the booklet that went with the CD "Bob Dylan, Live 1966". He could have easily made a much, much more exiting book if all the "standard" pictures from Kramer and Marshall were replaced by more of Feinstein's unseen amazing photographs.
