The Pantheon in Rome is one of the grand architectural statements of all ages. This richly illustrated book isolates the reasons for its extraordinary impact on Western architecture, discussing the Pantheon as a building in its time but also as a building for all time.

Mr. MacDonald traces the history of the structure since its completion and examines its progeny--domed rotundas with temple-fronted porches built from the second century to the twentieth--relating them to the original. He analyzes the Pantheon's design and the details of its technology and construction, and explores the meaning of the building on the basis of ancient texts, formal symbolism, and architectural analogy. He sees the immense unobstructed interior, with its disk of light that marks the sun's passage through the day, as an architectural metaphor for the ecumenical pretensions of the Roman Empire.

Past discussions of the Pantheon have tended to center on design and structure. These are but the starting point for Mr. MacDonald, who goes on to show why it ranks--along with Cheops's pyramid, the Parthenon, Wren's churches, Mansard's palaces-as an architectural archetype.

Tastily Edifying .......2005-02-15

William L. MacDonald presents an unpretentious and sound survey of Rome's most famous yet least understood architectural icon. For those with a keen but novitiate interest in the Pantheon, or casual readers of Roman history, this book is ideal; it's not overwhelmingly fact-laden and it's as assimilable as an afternoon snack. For those interested in the engineering, logistics and constitution of the Pantheon I would suggest some of the recent work by the Engineer David Moore. Historically MacDonald's ideas are consistent with previous analyses and include an interesting metaphysical supposition for the Pantheon's ambitious dimensions ("to unify unities...is the Pantheons ultimate meaning" - pg. 88). The final chapter offers an insightful survey of similar designs from ancient Mycenae to Neoclassical American, showing how influencing, and influenced, Hadrian's rebuilt Pantheon was as a western idiom and architectural paragon.

All-in-all I enjoyed reading this book and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!

Excellent Overview.......2006-04-22

My back still aches from carrying the damn thing home with me from the office which should give you an idea of just how comprehensive the work is.

The initial impression that most people have of Araki is that he's a dirty, dirty old man.

Which is true.

More importantly, he's someone who has documented every aspect of his life through photography. As much as people will focus on the sexual aspects of Araki's work, its just a part of the larger body of work which quite simply, includes everything. The book does an excellent job of selecting some highlights from an immense body of work produced by everyone's favorite dirty uncle. I have yet to extensively go through the interviews and writing but they provide a nice insight into his process and philosophy of photography.

Anthology well worth the time.......2006-03-19

If you've heard of Nobuyoshi Araki, want to get to know him, or are a little curious, this is the perfect book to look at. It is an anthology of his career, with a preface interview, history of each of his major releases, every well known shot, all presented in a highquality book.

Araki is a prolific artist who helped define Japans photographic conscience. Starting as most professional photographers do working for an ad agency, he spent his free time creating photos to express his past, environment, and passions, all tinged with his sense of playful rebellion. I would also highly suggest getting Araki by Araki, a compilation done by him of his favorite works. There is also a documentary based on him called Arakimentary that gives a true look at what kind of person he is. I first heard of him from my art teacher, browsed the local book stores, and was amazed. Above all, he wants to have fun and challenge convention, but doesn't give his art any esoteric meaning. His work is very controversial, but by todays decency standards in America, is very tame. His work includes traditional portraits, capturing the playfulness of children, architecture of Tokyo as it was developing post-war, flowers distorted to look like abominations, the sex scene of the early 90's, a tribute to his wife after her death from cancer, intimate nude portraits of beautiful women, and shots of everyday life in Tokyo.

Pleasure and sin in Tokyo.......2002-03-26

I'm a sexual educator and health and history teacher. I bought this book because have excellent pictures and is a documentary history of prostitution in China. I learned many interesting things about this matter.
Many of the pictures are very artistic and others are beautiful. I don't considered the book pornographic, instead is erotic and instructive.
I recomend this book to all people that study and work in the sexuality field.

That tricky distinction between pornography and art.......2001-05-09

Araki is not for everybody. If you are turned off by nude, erotic images, then you should probably avoid it. If you are disgusted or horrified by candid documentary footage of the sex industry then again, you will want to avoid this book.

I liked this book for several reasons. In the first place, the photographs--regardless of how you feel about the subject matter--are quite good. More importantly the collection of a whole accomplishes something important. It reveals the various sex clubs and love hotels of Tokyo in the 1980s within a normal social context. Pictures of salary men fondling a gogo dancer are mixed with normal shots of a crowded street or a restaurant. The message here is very clear. The sex industry is not only a product of society, but also it is a part of society.

I have been interested in prostitution ever since reading Foucault's "History of Sexuality" and "Power/Knowledge". Foucault argues that prostitution is form of regulating society. If people must have their sexual urges then fine--let them go to some shameful secretive area and pay for it. But don't them experience sexuality on their own terms.

Once can clearly see this in Araki's photographs. Salary men with still wearing their ties sit around a circular stage watching a topless dancer. Some draw lots to see who can go on stage to perform sexual acts with her. Why are these men doing this instead of going out, and having an affair with someone? The answer is simply that it is more productive for Japanese society to have these men work long hours and come to a highly regulated place for release.

Araki's work is more of a documentary than anything else. It is not meant to stimulate anyone in a pornographic manner and it is not meant to glorify its subject matter. Araki places the Japanese sex industry in a realistic and somewhat humorous context. This is probably what makes so many readers uncomfortable.

Not so fun.......2001-03-05

Tokyo Novelle is a much more enjoyable book than this one is. It is the difference between artful sluttiness and sleazy seediness. A lot is made of how the ladies photographed were amateurs, but this is confusing topless stripper-type amateurs that take up half of this book with the more hard core sex worker that make up the other half. It becomes depressing. All in all, this book came across as self-serving and smug.

Interesting, but could have been better.......2001-01-10

Louis Stanley was a major player in the golden age of auto racing, and has intriguing things to say about people and events that I haven't read anywhere else. I'm glad I bought it, and recommend it. However, the book reads as if it was written quickly and carelessly. Sentences are incomplete, or have very odd grammar. Short sections about particular drivers end so abruptly that you find yourself checking to be sure you didn't accidentally skip a page -- as if he intended to go back and complete a paragraph, but forgot to. With the aid of an editor to catch these things, and make him go back and finish up, this book could have been five stars. Still, it's a worthy addition to any F1 fan's collection.

Grand Prix Nostalgia From A Veteran Insider.......1999-10-13

Back in the 50s and 60s, Louis Stanley annually produced a book-length review of the Grand Prix season. These books were frank, gossipy, opinionated, well-written, and nicely illustrated with Stanley's black-and-white photographs. This new book is very much in that tradition.

Now well into his 90s, Stanley has produced perhaps his final book, a comparative look at the Grand Prix scene then and now. Although Stanley is grateful for the safety innovations that have prevented the wholesale carnage of yesteryear, his sympathies lie clearly with the drivers and traditions of the glory years. Stanley shares the feeling of many that big money has tarnished the sport and eliminated much of the comaraderie and plain old fun that existed even during the years when death on the track was all too common.

Readers of this book will once again see the images of legends like Graham Hill, Count Wolfgang von Trips, Masten Gregory, Jimmy Clark, and Stirling Moss. Whether you agree with him or not, Stanley's pungent pen-portaits are always entertaining, and I smiled to see personality characterizations from his earlier books reappearing here, not always about the same person to which they were originally applied!

So, I admit, there are times when Stanley shows his age. The writing is sometimes a bit rambling and the transitions abrupt, but the photographs take you back too a simpler time and a nobler time. The old BRM chief has given us one last tribute to the sport he loves.

Gathered here under one cover are the previously scattered tales of my hitch-hiking life. As the sub-title implies, however, they are more than mere travel tales; for the common, unremarkable act of hitch-hiking cloaks a quite remarkable instrument of personal growth and guidance.
