Book Description

This is an entirely different garden book: a pattern book in which a score of landscapes and gardens are drawn, described, and analyzed not just as a bouquet of pleasures but as sources, lodes to be mined for materials, shapes and relationships, and ideas for transforming our own backyards.

Charles W. Moore, one of America's best-known architects, is O'Neil Ford Professor of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. William J. Mitchell is Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, and Professor of Architecture and Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. William Turnbull, Jr., is Principal of William Turnbull Associates, San Francisco.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A treasure of a book!.......2005-01-22

This is a book full of the breath of life. Like the great gardens described, it can be appreciated in many ways. At once a collection and a pilgrimage, combining East and West, always with a touch of humor, it makes you feel the joy of being alive!

5 out of 5 stars Not a cofee-table book, a SERIOUS BOOK!!!.......2004-09-27

This book impressed me with the amount of information on garden design, styles and history it has. No, it is not a coffee table book with pretty pictures, but a serious study on the history of garden design. The pictures in it are black-and-white, as well as all diagrams and plans. It is an excellent reference book for students of landscape design and garden lovers alike!!!

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a garden book.......2002-03-14

It's really about experiencing and analyzing the spacial environment. Well written & illustrated. I've used it as a supplemental text in a history of L.A. course, & students have found it really valuable. I've just plain enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Covers a lot.......2000-11-29

Good examples of different aspects of the landscape. Explains different types of gardens well. It was an assigned book for a class, which made me not want to read it, but I'm glad that I did. Well written with good diagrams.

    Book Description

Steves' Garden Tales is a collection of short-short stories, poetry, prose, and streams of conscious thoughts written for and about my friends and family members, while planting and growing a backyard garden in the years 2001 through 2003. Starting with the opening piece, “Village Mother,” to the conclusion in “Teachers: A Litany,” each is a testament to a strong, positive network of family and friends. The reoccurring theme is love, loyalty and trust, or in one word, family. I say these pieces are about my family, but we are all family, so they will hopefully touch on topics of interest to each of you individually. Everyone knows or has a “Village Mother,” and in every family there is an “Uncle Neckbone.” We live in one world and we are one people in spite of small differences, and our stories are the same. These are the tales from my garden. Enjoy.

    Book Description

It begins with a wish and a waking dream: A city dweller laments her confined and hectic life, then sleeps and awakens to find the elements of a serene, traditional Japanese garden mirrored in a rain puddle and other objects on the rooftop outside her window. Illustrated with original woodcuts, this wise and charming desiderata walks us through the traditional elements of a Japanese garden-pebble, lantern, leaf, butterfly-and illuminates, simply and gently, the wisdom and generosity in each. (Be the pebble. Let time shape and smooth you.... Be the gardener. Create order.... Be the rain. Wash away, cleanse, forgive.... Be the moon. Shine through the dark.) Accessible to both Eastern and Western sensibilities, this elegant and inspiring book is a testament to harmony, and to the Buddhist acceptance of nature and flow. Zen teaching tale and hymn to nature, In a Japanese Garden celebrates the gifts of serenity and joy embodied in a simple garden and available at any time, deep within ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars "Be the path. Open the way for another".......2001-10-12

"In a Japanese Garden" is a delightful book with many thoughts that inspire us to look within, find the peace, the inner garden, and reflect that perfect place out to the world. After buying my own copy I have also given it as a gift and will again in the future. If you will allow me to "be the path," I encourage you to walk through this little garden again and again.

    5 out of 5 stars a reading meditation.......2000-03-23

A lovely little book; reading it is like a meditation. The woodcut art suits the Zen simplicity of the text well. After getting my own copy, I was inspired to give it as a gift to several friends (and will to several more). It's a nice reminder that you can find peace wherever you are.

            Book Description

The interplay between formal composition and the mutability of light haunts and colors the land Lynn Geesaman details in The Poetics of Place, her first book. She photographs landscapes that mankind has shaped over the centuries according to cherished ideas of what nature should be-natural places that have been reordered by industry. An eloquent Introduction by esteemed writer Jamaica Kincaid examines the history of the formal garden and offers a new perspective on the relationship of man to his environs.

I have this book-got it at her exhibit a few years ago here in Chicago. Her photographic style is of a dreamlike quality, and while her exact method of producing her photos remains a secret, the results are breathtaking. If you can't get to one of her shows, then at least buy the book - it makes you want to escape to these lovely garden settings. One of the better scenic photographers I've seen in a while.

5 out of 5 stars A book that you'll read many times, seeing something new in.......1999-01-17

Black & white images of gardens from around the world. Some gardens well know, some not, but all captured in a style only this photographer brings to the world. A book that deserves to be placed where everyone can see and look through it. A book that you'll read many times, seeing something new in each photograph every time.

                                          Book Description

Legwork is the immensely moving story of award-winning TV investigative consumer journalist Ellen Burstein MacFarlane’s battle with Multiple Sclerosis and her crusade to help others like herself seduced by a doctor’s false promises.

Her experience with this doctor, who eventually loses his license, turns out to be the most important consumer story of her life, and she brings to the chase in a wheelchair and triplegic—her reportorial gift and brave heart.

Co-written with Ellen’s twin sister, Legwork includes essays by other family members touched by Ellen’s illness and inspired by her goodness and wisdom.
