Book Description
Foreword by
Michael Sorkin
Introduction by
Richard Guy Wilson
Inflected by local climate, construction practices, regional culture, and Florida lifestyle, the work of the Sarasota school of architecture marks a high point in the development of regional modernism in American architecture.
Although the Sarasota school wasn't a consciously organized movement, it was an important chapter in American modernism that, unlike the earlier Bay Area school and Chicago school, has received little study or published scholarly treatment. John Howey provides the first solid documentation of the Sarasota group's designs and theories. He has interviewed all of the surviving architects and original clients and has included a rich archive of photographs by Ezra Stoller, Alexandra Georges, and others.
Customer Reviews:
Architects who flew too close to the sun.......2006-04-11
John Howey does an excellent job of connecting the place, the time, and the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Gropius, to explain the development and evolution of a fine group of architects who practiced in Sarasota beginning in the 1940s, and a few of whom remain even today. While he ends his book on a down note, the book itself and the hard work and dedication of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation have resulted in a revived interest in the work of these architects. Hopefully, efforts to save and restore their surviving masterworks will succeed, despite the forces of McMansionization at work in Sarasota.
GOOD Mid-Century Modernism.......2001-07-31
This is the story of a group of talented young architects who were in the right place at the right time. The time (1946-66) was when America was in a building boom, the public wanted fresh, clean designs. Sarasota was a growing town and Modern Architecture was going to change the world. The Father of it all was an architect named Ralph Twitchell. In 1940 Twitchell hired a young intern architect named Paul Rudolph. Rudolph would go onto Harvard GSD, serve in the Navy and return to Sarastoa in 1946, and then become Twitchell's partner in 1950. The two of them, with a group of other talented architects (most notably Victor Lundy) would go on to design some extraordinary custom homes, churches and schools. Their architecture stressed the tectonic (the use of new technologies). Although the Sarasota aesthetic was in similar vein to the California post- war architecture, it also was heavily derivative of a Florida vernacular architecture. Rudolph's early philosophy stressed five points: the Clarity of construction; Maximum economy of means; Simple overall volumes penetrating vertically and horizontally; Clear geometry floating above the Florida Landscape; Honesty in details and in structural connections. It is always a treat to see his pen and ink renderings. A must for the serious student of modernism.

Valuable resource on dyes and fabric paints.......2000-06-03
The name turned me away at first, as I am not dyeing for the theater. That was a mistake. While I don't need the chapters on how to set up a dye shop for a theatre, other information provided in this book is hard to come by elsewhere. Covers fiber reactive dyes, acid dyes, 1:2 metal complex dyes, direct dyes, basic dyes for acrylics, disperse dyes, metallics, textile paints, screen printing, 4 different discharge dyeing pastes, batik, blue printing and brown printing on fabric (or whole garments) using light, marbling, airbrush. Much more thorough treatment of potential hazards than any other dyeing book I've seen. Lists of carcinogenic dyes to avoid. Actual test results of fabric feel and fastness of many different textile paints, each on six different fibers. Good index.

Product Description
Hiro s distinguished career as an exquisite fashion, still-life and portrait photographer began nearly 40 years ago in New York at Harper s Bazaar. Since then he has become one of the most influential figures in postwar American photography, greatly admired by other photographers and art directors, yet often unknown to the public. Only once before has famed photographer Richard Avedon devoted his energy to the work of another photographer, and that was Lartigue. In this new monograph, Avedon has edited the entire range of Hiro s best work to create a massive new retrospective that absolutely must be a part of every fashion, commercial and fine art photographer s inspirational library. 144 pp., 37 color and 32 duotone plates, 9 3/4 x 12 3/4 , Hardbound.

Students of Advertising: Come hither.......2000-03-22
This is a good example of a real master at work. I connect more with his black and white portraits more than anything else in the book. He's the best at what he does and it's a damn shame that he's fallen off the radar screen. This is a reprint edition. The pictures lack a timelessness which keep them grounded in commerce. If you are studying advertising, check this guy out. Hiro studied with some of the best and it shows. You can learn a lot from Hiro.
Students of Advertising: Come hither.......2000-03-22
This is a good example of a real master at work. I connect more with his black and white portraits more than anything else in the book. He's the best at what he does and it's a damn shame that he's fallen off the radar screen. This is a reprint edition. Most of the photos look very dated. That's why I don't connect with much of it. The pictures lack a timelessness which takes them beyond commerce and into art.
Hiro, Hiro, Hiro.......2000-02-03
Hiro seems to have dropped off the map which is too bad. His portrait work is great. It seems that he got a little looser in the 80's which works for me. Still, his work never strays from the spare design style which made him the hot ticket. This book does not make me want to run out and take pictures. I wonder about his lighting more than anything. These photos are paradigms of design and composition but not much beyond that. This is a great textbook for the advertising photographer. What worked then can work now. I would be very interested seeing what Hiro is producing now. Hiro, Hiro where are you?

Book Description
Enter Misaki, perhaps the most innocent and most sincere young lady there ever was. It's almost inconceivable that she could be a vampire. And with her powers as a vampire, she could easily entice any human to do her biding... but she chooses not to. Especially when it comes to Kuroe, a young author who has a deep running past with vampires.
Customer Reviews:
a good one.......2006-11-18
This is a really cute (but not so shojo-cute) story of a little girl vampire who has a caretaker. You don't know what kind of relationship it is, but you get the feeling Misaki is older than Kuroe so don't let the age difference scare you off. This is a really wonderful story; different and new. If you like manga and/ or like vampires, you'll like this story a lot.
Besides that, it's just a good story and great drawings as well.
I'm an anime guy..........2006-07-15
and I always found manga somewhat...pointless. I figured, why bother reading it when you can just watch it? Then I saw this while at Borders one day and was so intrigued. The cover art was beautifully drawn and showed the particulars of a possible love story. I picked it up and opened it to see what it was like. I was immediately intrigued and wanted it- even though I didn't find manga very enjoyable. However, I just bought this the other day and was so moved. The storyline is fantastic. With the vampire market in anime/manga being totally saturated, it's amazing that this title stands out so greatly amongst the rest. It's a beautiful love story riddled with suspense and intrigue. Gorgeous artwork and fantastic characters make for an awesome read. In fact? This manga just made me fall in love with what may be one of Japan's most popular forms of entertainment. This was the first manga I read- and thanks to Blood Alone, it won't be the last. It's $10...do yourself a favor and buy it right away. Towards the end of this first volume there's a scene that melted my heart completely away and I stopped on the page for a good minute just staring at the artwork and re-reading what was said. This is one good love story.
Best manga ever!!.......2006-06-02
Just finished reading and I was amazed by everything. Great story line, not another hey I'm a vampire and I have angst, but a real heart gripping tale. Very glad I bought it!! The artwork is very elegant and beautiful! A must for your summer reading...

Book Description
Dateline: Toronto collects all 172 pieces that Hemingway published in the Star, including those under pseudonyms. Hemingway readers will discern his unique voice already present in many of these pieces, particularly his knack for dialogue. It is also fascinating to discover early reportorial accounts of events and subjects that figure in his later fiction. As William White points out in his introduction to this work, "Much of it, over sixty years later, can still be read both as a record of the early twenties and as evidence of how Ernest Hemingway learned the craft of writing." The enthusiasm, wit, and skill with which these pieces were written guarantee that Dateline: Toronto will be read for pleasure, as excellent journalism, and for the insights it gives to Hemingway's works.

Customer Reviews:
the making of the writer.......2007-02-06
In 1920 an unknown young American landed a reporting assignment with The Toronto Star. He moved to Paris, and over the next four years wrote 172 mostly by-lined pieces, and incidentally established his place as a professional writer.
That young man was Ernest Hemingway.
"Dateline Toronto" is a collection of all 172 of his pieces for The Star. There is serious reportage on conditions in postwar Europe and Turkey, on public figures and social events; the value of the franc, Prohibition, inflation, tourism and sports, but what shines through all of it is the human element, the conversations with the man on the street, dialogues overheard on the bus or in the shops, the point of view of the average Joe or Pierre.
Hemingway made the news comprehensible to everybody. For example, a difficult subject like Canada's participation at the Genoa conference of 1922 is distilled to two sentences from a politician's mouth: "Canada's chief interest is the recognition of Russia...Canada has much harvest machinery for Russian export..." A report on a prizefight in Toronto is seen through the comments of the women spectators.
Most surprising is the humour. Who knew Hemingway was a wit? Sometimes it appears in a wry turn of phrase or exaggerated description as in "Ted's Skeeters", an account of a fishing trip in a mosquito infested forest north of Toronto. :
"The mosquitoes were coming through the netting as though it were the bars of a cage."
In "A Free Shave" Hemingway parodies his own future work as he describes a visit to the barber college which "requires the cold, naked valor of the man who walks clear-eyed to death...."
"I said, `I'm going upstairs.' Upstairs is where the free work is done by the beginners.
A hush fell over the shop. `He's going upstairs'..."
Torontonians who recall the Mel Lastman years will appreciate "Trading Celebrities", wherein Hemingway asks why not trade public figures among the nations as the big leagues do baseball players, and gives some ridiculous examples like this one.
"What a boon to a community like Toronto, which doesn't know what else to do but elect officials who will keep on running. As in this case:
Toronto, Feb 16.--Unnamed parties have completed negotiations between the Toronto City Council and... Hamburg, Germany for the exchange of Mayor Thomas Church in return for 20,000 tons of German shipping..."
Well, you get the idea.
If you wonder how Hemingway changed the art of literature, how he cut through the Victorian verbosity, straight to the heart of the matter, it's all here in his reporting.
Dateline Toronto has been out of print for some time. If you can beg, borrow or buy a copy second hand, do not wait another minute. It's a rare look at the early twentieth century from the youthful eyes and mind of a man who would become one of its giants.
Young Hemingway.......1999-07-12
Hemingway was 20-24 yrs old when he wrote these dispatches for the Toronto newspapers. He already had journalism experience in Kansas City and war experience in Italy. He had experienced his first broken heart. The work is fresh and clean and much of it could be printed in this morning's newspaper and it would be considered good. He covered the day-to-day and also peace conferences in Europe. He later said some of this is "juvenilia" and should not be included in his life's work. The writing is very good even at this young age.

Book Description
Joe Barley, full-time English professor and part-time private detective, is given a simple case: to track Jason Tyler and find proof of his adultery. But as he's investigating, Barley stumbles across the story of a missing manuscript containing writings by a young Ernest Hemingway. What is Tyler's connection to the Hemingway papers? And why does Tyler's wife insist that Barley stay on the case, long after he's come up with the required evidence of Tyler's infidelity? While these questions hang over Barley, his own life is complicated by academic politics, and challenges to his monogamous relationship with his longtime partner, Carole. Set in Toronto, The Hemingway Caper is the second book in the Joe Barley series. The first, The Kidnapping of Rosie Dawn, won the prestigious Barry Award.
