The Codes Guidebook for Interiors
ASIN: 0070610460 |
Book Description
This is the first and only complete resource for lighting design, giving architects and designers--as well as engineers--all the right tools to implement quality installations. Features a graphics-rich presentation full of lighting patterns, installation photos, fixtures and schemes with costs, plus color sections displaying how to mix light and color. Inside: essential safety-and compliance-facilitating code information from the National Electric Code, Energy Policy Act, and other sources. Includes hundreds of interior and exterior details from a range of project types.
Book Description
Lighting design, long regarded as a pragmatic and purely technical aspect of construction planning, has increasingly developed into a discipline of its own over the past years. This publication recognises recent developments by combining the technical sphere with an artistic perspective, centred on the question of the role of natural and artificial light in the perception of a variety of (urban) landscapes. The first section of the book describes techniques for creating nocturnal landscapes, analysing these according to typology (coastal, riverside, lakeside, mountain, forest, marsh, or quarry and industrial sceneries) and concept of illumination. We embark on a process of learning to read (illuminated) landscapes. The second section presents detailed documentation of 21 international case-studies arranged according to type and drawn, for example, from Great Britain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan and Singapore.

Great start for beginners.......2006-01-25
This is perfect for beginners. The author offers a short list of basic must have items, she discusses different types of ink, what they're used for and how to use them. The same goes for rubber stamps, paper, etc. She describes different techniques and give clear directions and the photos are great. I highly recommend this book for beginner such as I. You can't go wrong. Buy this book before you spend too much money on material you may not need yet. Di

Customer Reviews:
...but NOT for collagraphy beginners.......2003-08-29
Was looking for updated info re collagraphy techniques for newbies and water-based and acrylic inks for same. Gleaned enough from older books to know that collagraphy is relatively easy for beginners because no expensive printmaking press was required to apply pressure, only simple household utensils were quite adequate (and often preferable).
This book devotes seven pages to collagraphy and only mentions an oil-based ink/mechanical press method of producing collagraphic prints. Very disappointing, especially since many professional quality collagraphs today are printed using the manual, "pressless" technique.
If you'd like to begin a more simple printmaking experience by making monoprints, or either wood or linoleum block prints, or perhaps screenprints, then you're in luck. The book is full of clear illustrations, instructions and color repros of finished prints. The other "press-dependent" printmaking methods are well covered here as well. Not heavy on details, but rock-solid on the basics that a beginner needs.
Thus, my rating is: 1 star for collagraphy beginners, and 5 stars for everyone else. 3 stars splits the difference.

Customer Reviews:
Get your feet wet!.......2003-10-09
Never took a printmaking class in college...I've been carving erasers and wondering about this new world of relief printing. This book is wonderful.
Not too much information on complicated techniques. Enough info to have me working on new ideas. If you're beyond the commercial rubber stamps and/or are an artist hoping to incorporate printed images into
multimedia work...buy this book! Great reference! It'll fill in the blanks for those who have an art education but no basic printmaking.
Simple prints, excellent results.......2001-05-14
This book is aimed at relief printmaking without a press using a range of techniques from linocuts through to using found objects. The techniques are clearly described and are applied to a number of simple but attractive projects such as single pamphlet books. pillows or cards. The photographs are clear and helpful. I particularly liked the fact that Gwen Diehn went through the clean up process, which is often not covered in much detail, and that she used vegetable oil rather than the more noxious kerosene. Throughout the book are a number of inspiring examples by past and present printmakers which help to extend the processes described. Whilst this book is aimed primarily at beginners, it offers stimulus and information of use to the more experienced printmakers too.

The info you don't get from a camera course.......2007-06-27
Full of information for the equine photographer. Thank you for a book that fulls in the missing information for equine photography, and giving me all the tricks of the trade. Enlightening!!!
Practical Help and Valuable Information.......2007-06-08
This book was more than I even exspected. Good practical information and not all technical. This book really gives you tips on taking horse photos, which is totaly different from Portrait Photography of People. I have put the information to use.
Should be titled Beginners Guide to Horse Photography.......2007-01-24
I eagerly awaited this book for several months before receiving it. What a total disappointment it has been. Not only are the photos mediocre, many poorly exposed, with details hidden in shadows or blown out by too much light; most are simply not crisp or sharp-- they could easily appear in anyone's snapshot album. It appears that her target audience is simply the horse owner who wants to take better photos of his horse. If that is the case, specific information would be most helpful (i.e. " standing approximately 10 feet from the shoulder will give you X result". The advice on posing is totally inadequate, even for Quarterhorses which are featured through the book. Arabians, Morgans, Saddlebreds, etc, are all posed somewhat differently. There is no mention of learning the breed differences in order to photo well. The head shots on pages 114 & 115 make me want to cry...the "bad" example is superior to the one being shown as correct although the background is better, and it could benefit from judicious cropping.
This is the other disappointment - there are no truly beautiful photos in the book which give you something to aim for, or to admire and life your sights up. Surely the author could have found a few outstanding photos to add visual interest to her text rather than using model horses.
I believe that if you are a camera novice, this book could give you some useful tips, and that is why it gets 2 stars instead of 1. However, you would be far better off to get a book on photography, learn how to use the camera's features and then go out and shoot, shoot, shoot. Try to find Darol Dickensen's older "Photographing Livestock", look at Robert Vavra's books, read the Quarterhorse Journal, the Arabian Horse Times, the Dressage books to see good examples of excellent photographs. Pay attention to the photos in the horse magazines like Horse Of Course, Western Horsemen - you will learn far more. After all this waiting, I am returning this rather basic, generally underwritten book tomorrow. Good luck with your horse photos - you can do better!
Book that teach you horse photography.......2007-01-18
There are quite a many photographers who have beautiful pictures and have written books to help other persons to improve their photographing skills. However in most cases you just look at those beautiful pictures in those books to understand that you will never get such pics on your own.
With Lesli Groves' book it is different. Most of the pictures shown at the book are not perfect, but it is clearly explained how you can get the same or even better results, so I find this book more valuable than many other books. You can learn much and get better results photographing horses even if you are not intended to be professional photographer.
I read this book from one cover to another and enjoyed it right form the start. And, I must say, author has good sense of humor.
Photographing Horses: How to Capture the Perfect Equine Image.......2007-01-16
Bought this book because I love photography - not only shooting and creating images, but looking at others' works too! I have photographed horses before, but never gave it much thought. This book showed me some cool secrets and great ideas, it helped train my eye in just what to look for and how to set up a shot with horses and horses with people in the frame. Besides, the photos are beautiful. Get the book, stick it on your coffee table or drag it along with you on your photo shoot!

Cats rule !.......2003-06-14
Men are ok but cats rule! Even male cats. This is a funny look at how and why cats have come to rule the hearts and minds of so many women. Very lighthearted and rather short but very entertaining. A nice little gift for the female cat lover.
Don't make me wear a collar - my cat's view!.......2000-04-08
My cats appreciate the fact that we don't make them wear collars. Come to think of it, I don't make my husband wear a wedding ring either. We all mutually trust eachother and live in harmony just happy to be on the planet together.
If you want your cats to look at you like you have gone mad as you laugh out loud at these funny feline ways - buy this book.

Book Description
For many, the companionship of a lovable feline is a welcome treat from the unfortunate habits of certain humans of the male persuasion. Besides never leaving the seat up or requiring valuable closet space, cats love leftovers, they don't snore, and they always think you look wonderful in the morning. They never complain about work or their boss, and they are very kissable--with no beard burn! Beverly Guhl playfully shows the unique joys of acceptance and camaraderie that cat lovers enjoy with their beloved companions. This humorous collection of cartoons celebrates a relationship that is as close to purrfect as a girl can get!

This isn't a "male-bashing" book, honest! It just very sweetly glorifies cats. After all, a cat isn't better than Mr. Right, but a cat is sure better than Mr. Wrong! Enjoy! .....
This is a really cute book!.......1999-05-03
I loved this book and even bought several as gifts for friends. They loved the book, too. It's so funny and the drawings are great.

Great Purchase for Many Clerkships.......2007-09-22
Blueprints is a great review book for your third year rotations. It does not have too much detail, but enough so you know you've covered all of your bases. If you need more detail, you can always go to the web or to a textbook from the library.
blueprints bundle (med, peds, ob/gyn, psych, surgury).......2006-07-17
I've only used med and peds so far, good questions in back in shelf/usmle format. Highly recommend for clinicals, only downside is med was a little thick to get through by the end of my rotation.
Blueprints.......2002-01-12
The Blueprints series in combination with UCV, first aid step 2, NMS question helped me ace step 2 and make a score in the high 90s. Must start with a sound step 1 base though. Highly recommended. Mastering the material is a must though.
Outstanding Series.......2001-06-27
I used Blueprints as my primary study guide during my third year of medical school for all rotations. They have all the information you need to know for shelf examinations. Really! I scored well above the 90th percentile on all shelf exams by diligently studying this series. A must have for clinical rotations.

great series with a good overview.......2001-05-01
I really enjoyed reading the Blueprint series. These books are easy to read and give you a great overview over each topic. The more motivated student might feel that some subject is not very deeply covered. Still the essentials you need to know are there. In general USMLE don't ask beyond that. Illustration are excellent and extremly helpful. Also a quick summery with key points helps you to keep important things in mind. In addition the question section is very helpful to estimate your level of knowlege. Overall a series very concisely written, consistent and very good in terms of didactics. Recommended especially for foreign medical graduates.

Book Description
A biography of Irish journalist, James Vincent Murphy, who started out as a Catholic priest, spent the twenties in Rome and Paris, and reported from Berlin on the Nazis as an official propagandist. An international lecturer and linguist, Murphy knew many of Europe's famed intellectuals. For a time, he was the official translator of Hitler's speeches into English, and it was his translation of "Mein Kampf" that is recognized as the first unabridged version in English.

Old newspaper articles and photos are highlighted throughout the book. Interviews with "old-timers" give a personal glimpse into the days when Wisconsin was wild. A pub crawl across Wisconsin in times gone by..........2004-10-17
Thanks to a abberation in drinking age laws between Minnesota and Wisconsin in the late 70s, I spent a GREAT deal of time in Wisconsin taverns in my late teens, so I consider myself something of an expert on the subject. This book is a fantastic, politically incorrect primer on the taverns of the land of cheese, beer and Packer fans. Come on - if you think of beer, Wisconsin automatically comes to mind, doesn't it? If you're somewhere else in America, say San Diego or Charlotte, and have never spent a frigid January Saturday night getting tipsy in a little hole-in-the-wall in the woods surrounded by earflapped yokels who have that "yah, shure!" accent just like in the movie "Fargo", this book is as close as you're gonna get. The pages bring you back to another time, before globalization and homogenization and satellite communication where "local flavor" (good or bad) actually meant something. It's obvious that this is a labor of love for the authors - they laugh along with you at the bizarre promotional ideas some of these taverns had, yet, deep down, you know they admired their threadbare earnestness. Each tavern a unique, flawed jem (well, OK, some are just plain rocks) with story after story. This is a natural for anyone interested in breweriana, Wisconsin, or a swig of the barley pop over the third Ole and Lena joke of the night - a classic!
