3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-07-29

I was waiting for this book to become available, and bought it right away. I was disappointed, first of all, at how pathetically small the book is for the price. Also, I was expecting to see some really awesome stuff...new stuff. However many of the photos are of murals I've seen in other books on the subject. (To be clear, I'm not saying these artists' works are bad, it's just I've seen it all before) There were a few new ones, but not incredibly impressive. I guess if you're looking for some books with some stunning work in it, I would go for some of these:
Revisiting The Painted House by Graham Rust (as well as his other titles), and The Art of Trompe L'oeil Murals by Yves Lanthier.

5 out of 5 stars Provides a solid understanding of social forces.......2005-08-09

Do the arts deserve a higher place in our children's education? Yes... and no... It depends on your outlook in relation to history. This text places art education within the social context of general education in the West (most specifically America for a majority of the book). Doing so allows for an examination of why one generation may learn about art and its process, while the next generation will remain almost entirely ignorant of traditions and methods of artistic creation. Art lovers (and haters) as well as history enthusiasts (education, art, social currents, etc...) will certainly enjoy.

          J. Michael Straczynski is a man who has made his mark in many ways whether in the world of science fiction and television with the hit Babylon 5 or in the comic book industry with such books as Rising Stars and Midnight Nation. Now his unique vision comes to the world of Marvel and the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Joining Straczynski is a man of equal legend -- John Romita Jr. Regarded by many as the definitive Spider-Man artist of the last decade, Romita's unique pace and superb storytelling perfectly complement Straczynski's vision.

Amazing Spiderman is amazing! I guarentee that if you read the first issue of this series you will not be able to put it down until it is finished!

          5/5 - story
5/5 - artwork (John Romita Jr. never fails!)
          5/5 - great dialogue!

This series will make anyone a spiderman fan!

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, read them all.......2006-06-12

Through reading these and other recent Spider-Man books (25 issues worth) one thing comes to mind: even through bad stories, Spider-Man is still the man. It may be controversial but I like the idea of Ezekiel, Morlun, the Spider totem, all of it. Spider-Man has to be changed up every once in awhile and this is a much better way to do it then killing people off, or a new costume. As Straczynski's run goes on he shows a new side to Spider-Man/Peter Parker, MJ, Aunt May, even Uncle Ben. Spider-Man is firmly in the Marvel Universe in this series, with random comings and goings from other heroes. On the other hand, Peter Parker is firmly in the real world during this run. Peter Parker in college has been tried before, but Peter Parker (as an adult of course) in high school? Well, that's different and incredibly entertaining. The new villains are memorable and the older cast reminds you why you loved them to begin with.

4 out of 5 stars This is good stuff people!.......2005-10-20

As Spiderman stories go, this is tight. Straczynski's writing is excellent. He gets Peter's babbling and his narrative is strong. The introduction of Ezekiel is excellent and he provides mystery to a series that I often feel is lacking mystery. As always, John Romita Jr's artwork is excellent. He is one of the most underrated artists in the biz. His work is strong, always dynamic, and never unsure of itself.

This is good storytelling, people. Pick it up!

          4 out of 5 stars The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1: Coming Home.......2005-10-04

I'll admit it, I've always favored good old Spidey over most other super heroes. And, well, anything J. Michael Straczynski writes turns to gold, so I was expecting big things.

Stracynzki's Spider-Man has been a superhero for quite a while, so he's fairly confident in his routine. None of that "Peter Parker learns how to deal with his newfound powers" jazz. What's so interesting about this volume is that, rather than questioning the origin of the hero, it questions the nature of his powers.

Ever thought about the villains that the webslinger has had to fight over the years? Doctor Octopus, The Rhino, The Vulture, other such animalistic fellows. As the mysterious Ezekiel tells Peter, "the kind of enemy you get tells a lot about the kind of person you are." So Spider-Man is the totemistic reflection of all spiders, and his enemies are all pretenders. Interesting stuff.

What follows is some standard (if not well done and drawn) action, balanced well with the light moments the comic is known for. Not exactly straying from formula, but I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of J. Michael Straczynski's awesome run.......2004-10-24

When Babylon 5 creator and Rising Stars scribe took over writing duties on Amazing Spider-Man, he did something that hadn't been done to the title for years. He made it amazing again. Straczynski introduces a new spin on the Spider-Man mythos in Coming Home, in the form of the mysterious Ezekiel who wreaks havoc on the web-head's life. And, as Peter discovers, there is more to his origin than he had ever thought. After years of some lame storylines (clone saga anyone?), Straczynski re-injected the magic and awe into the title, while at the same time putting his own spin on the classic Marvel character. Not to mention the superb art by legendary John Romita Jr. gives the book an ultra slick yet classic look, and fans of his work over the years will surely marvel here. All in all, while Ultimate Spider-Man may try to re-invent the web crawler mythos, it's Amazing Spider-Man that is really the defining Spidey title (Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Spider-Man title is also worth checking out), and any of Straczynski's works on the title is definitely worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars Awsome action novel!.......2003-02-26

Peter Parker is an ordinary teen-aged boy who has many problems like bullies and missing the bus. He also has a major crush on a girl named Mary Jane. Peter's best friend is Harry Osborne and takes pictures for the school newspaper. One day Peter and his class go to a research lab, Peter gets bit by a genetically enhanced spider. Peter acuires superhuman strength and speed. He can leep high, climb walls, shoot webbing, and has a spider sense that tells him when danger is near. I liked this book because of all the fighting scenes. If I could rate this book one to five I would give it a solid four.

5 out of 5 stars Used To Teach Reading and Writing.......2002-02-18

As a fifth grade teacher of reading and writing, I always try to give my students literature that they will enjoy. Yes, I of course read the best Newbery Award winning novels, but believe it or not, Spiderman is so good that it has become a terrific teaching tool in my classroom.

For starters, it contains all of the elements of story in grand fashion: Character (Spiderman), setting (New York), plot (Nerd gets superpowers), movement through time(From TV show to Aunt May's house), and change(Nerd becomes a human spider). Plus, the drama is first rate. When spiderman realizes that he should have stopped that crook earlier in the night instead of letting him run free, his reality becomes a tortured mission to rid the world of evil. The fact that he must live with this torture his entire life creates drama that is of Shakespearean magnitude.

My students have made their own comic books and this Marvelworks edition has been their guide. What better dialogue to give them than such classic lines as:"Someday I'll show them!>sob < Some day they'll be sorry!-Sorry that they laughed at me!" This is so delicious, it's a perfect set up for the life altering experience that will soon hit Peter Parker head on.

As for the comic itself, Spiderman is simply great entertainment and this edition does it justice in the best possible way.

Read it for enjoyment; teach it as quality literature.

5 out of 5 stars Spidey turns 30, but Venom hasn't come to wish him Happy Birthday.......2006-01-30

The Amazing Spider-Man # 375 was a special giant-sized issue commemorating the 30th anniversary of what many would call the best comic book of all time. With its gold foil cover, it's a real beauty of an issue, and the contents are pretty special, too. After a special introduction, you've got a full story featuring a pretty important contest between Spidey and his most formidable modern-day foe - and then you also get four short stories hearkening back to important events in Spider-Man history and foreshadowing upcoming challenges in the webslinger's near future.

I was always a big fan of Venom, and this issue marks an important point in the careers of both Venom and Spider-Man. The cover proudly proclaims this "the final confrontation" between these two well-matched foes. In the previous issue, Venom had kidnapped Peter Parker's parents - the parents Peter had thought were dead for the last twenty years. Venom, of course, is a combination of Eddie Brock, a man who blames Spider-Man for his downfall and disgrace, and Spidey's old black costume, which is really an alien symbiote. Brock/Venom is a little loopy, obsessed with "protecting" people from Spider-Man's "evil." He kidnapped Parker's parents in order to protect them from their son. It turns out that Spidey isn't the only pursuer of Venom, though. J. Jonah Jameson, with the help of Silver Sable, has hired the Wild Pack to hunt Brock down. The eventual party still isn't complete, though - not until Brock's ex-wife shows up . The upshot of all this is an agreement between Spidey and Venom to leave each other alone, an agreement which sets up Venom's transition to his very own series (starting with the six-issue limited series Venom: Lethal Protector).

The extra stories in this issue include a look at the important connection between Spider-Man and The Fantastic Four's Human Torch, a life-changing event in the life of John Jameson (Man-Wolf), and a foreboding little vignette featuring the Chameleon. All in all, it's a pretty impressive tribute to a fantastic character on his 30th birthday.

The only foreign photographer in the Soviet Union when Hitler's troops invaded in 1941, "Adolf Hitler's greatest enemy," the first journalist to enter the concentration camp at Dachau before American troops arrived to liberate it--these are descriptions of some of the courageous World War II correspondents who risked their lives to report on the outrage, devastation, and hope of war. What makes them especially notable is that they are all women. Penny Colman's remarkable book tells of some of the 127 women who defied the traditional gender barrier to become accredited war correspondents. Reporting on Iwo Jima, concentration camps, famous battles, and Nazi rallies, stellar writers and photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White and Clare Boothe Luce scooped many of their male colleagues, and gave the folks back home a real image of war. Breathtaking photographs, actual newspaper dispatches, and edge-of-seat descriptions of the near misses the correspondents experienced as they followed the war make this book the ultimate for girls in search of girl power inspiration. Penny Colman is the author of many award-winning titles, including Rosie the Riveter: Women Working on the Home Front in World War II and Girls: A History of Growing Up Female in America. Book Description

During World War II, 127 women managed to obtain official accreditation from the U.S. War Department as war correspondents. In spite of U.S. military regulations that forbade women to cover combat, Martha Gellhorn, Margaret Bourke-White, Lee Miller, and many others found ways to get “where the action was.” Their tenacity, bravery, and fresh approach to reporting war news broke the gender barrier and opened the way for women journalists of today. This is the exciting story of what they did and how they did it—flying bombing missions, taking photographs inside Buchenwald, stowing away on D day hospital ships, dodging bullets on Iwo Jima, and much more. Penny Colman’s authoritative and exciting text also functions as an overview of the war and is profusely illustrated with up-front photos.

..."There were many dead and many wounded but the survivors contained the fluid situation and slowly turned it into a retreat, and finally, as the communiqué said, the bulge was ironed out. This was not done fast or easily; and it was not done by those anonymous things, armies, divisions, regiments. It was done by men, one by one, your men." -Martha Gellhorn, writing on the Battle of the Bulge in 1944

Where the Action Was takes us on a journey through the past, looking at the pioneers of women journalists in action as they faced danger, death, and the images of war. Colman captures different moments throughout the war, from the very beginning, to Pearl Harbor, to the liberation of concentration camps, to the dropping of the atomic bombs.

The amazing tales of many talented women writers are accurately detailed, and they show us the adversities our female predecessors had to overcome for us women to be where we are today. Traveling as stowaways on boats, risking their lives to report the truth, disregarding orders given by military leaders, and being arrested all in a day's work for these stubborn and talented writers.

I'll bet you've never heard of Dickey Chappelle, Ann Stringer, Margaret Bourke-White, and Martha Gellhorn. Neither had I, until I read this book. Now I question the fact that none of this information is taught in class, or why these heroic, talented women must remain in anonymity. ...

                          Book Description

When war broke out in Europe in 1939, American women had no way of knowing how much the next six years would change their lives. The beginning of World War II not only meant hard work and sacrifice for women in the United States -- it also meant opportunity.

In the 1920s and 1930s, women journalists were frequently labeled as "sob sisters" or "newshens," and their news stories usually appeared on the women's society page, deep inside the newspaper. But when war exploded around the world, these female reporters wanted more than just front-page assignments. They wanted to be where the action was, and fought for the right to report from the front lines.

From Margaret Bourke-White, who covered the battles in Russia; to Lee Miller, who photographed the wounded in field hospitals in France; to Shelley Mydans, who was a prisoner of war in the Philippines; to Marguerite Higgins, who reported at the liberation of Dachau, Catherine Gourley tells the personal stories of some of the female legends of journalism in this important and timely book.

Filled with stirring period photographs and news clippings, War, Women, and the News explores the conflicts and challenges these women faced before, during, and after World War II. Their images and bylines would crack open a door for future generations of aspiring female journalists.

                            Book Description

During World War II women correspondents wanted to be a part of the dramatic and exhilarating scene of wartime conflict as much as their male colleagues. They reported from the war scene because that was where the big story was. This study is an important part of the growing literature which deals with women in journalism. The women who were interviewed were asked about their experiences, including conditions under which they reported, the types of stories they wrote, and their accomplishments as journalists. Those studied were largely newspaper or wire service reporters who were at the front. A few others who wrote for magazines are included because of particularly interesting experiences or personalities. The obstacles that women correspondents faced are recounted here. For example, they found it difficult to get passports from the State Department and accreditation from the War Department. They faced antagonism from certain generals and sometimes bias and fear of competition from their male colleagues. On the other hand, many women discuss the help and support they received from men at the front. Women War Correspondents of World War II is an in-depth analysis of the life of the woman correspondent. The problems of censorship, a war fought on different fronts, and the dangers of then-modern warfare are recounted. Many women entered the field through newspaper jobs vacated by men who left for the front; they then worked their way into becoming war correspondents. For the most part they did not expect preferential treatment and avoided exceptional notice. According to their own accounts, they encountered problems unique to their sex, but were adept at handling the problems and were professional in their work.

                              Book Description

The book is part memoir, adventure, travel book, multi-cultural manual and window into a marriage and family. It records experiences that made Yvonne and Victor’s lives unique by describing happenings that were poignant and rewarding. It starts with Yvonne’s early trips to Italy as a teenager, and then her return to live there, as a mother with three small children while Victor was off working in remote eastern Turkey. Escaping for three weeks allowed him to write about discovering with Yvonne the charms of Western Europe. Ten years later, Victor’s part-time assignment to explore the Italian aerospace industry led to other travel adventures, and a six-week family odyssey that wandered through Italy, Switzerland, France and England. Years later, he became a frequent traveler to NATO countries, and his air mile awards allowed Yvonne and he to share many pleasing adventures. His career path next led to being appointed to a four-nation consortium, and they moved and lived in Munich for four years. Their lives were then filled with many exciting activities, as they learned to live and enjoy life as Europeans.
