If you are interested in learning about jewelry design, or seeing a comprehensive set of examples of a jeweler's most fabulous pieces, don't bother with this book. The subtitle "Universe of Design" is most misleading as regards this member of the set--I have not read the others, so I can't review them. The book is simply a puff piece about Van Cleef and Arpels: names various members of the family, discusses some ongoing motifs in design, and does a lot of name-dropping. The color illustrations are mostly copies of ad photos. Very skimpy for a "universal" book!

Van Cleef & Arpel...A book with its own class........2000-04-04

When I saw this book for the first time, it seems like I found some thing that I has been waiting for a long time. Since I was young, I am interesting in this jewelry maker because my mother tell me that the Van Cleef jewelry is the most beautiful jewelry in the world. So, I would like to know more about this adorable jewelry maker and this book is really fulfill my need. It consist of the history and the technic of them, Van Cleef & Arpel. The book also contain lots of beautiful images of the legendary jewelry product from Van Cleef such as the crown and jewel of the Empress of Iran. This book is a highly recommended book. After you finish you will realize that the value of this book is more than its price on the cover.

Groover is super duper! Spell binding stuff. The book is great and of excellent print quality, but her stuff in a museum or gallery is truly special. The quality and technique of her work is astonishing. It's heartening to know that there are still people who have not only the eye but such mastery of antiquated methods.

Derivative story, amazing art..........2007-03-27

Billi 99 is the story of Billi, a woman who succeeds her father as a Zorro-style hero named Toleado. The story is quite interesting, but particularly well executed. The same story with a better wordplay would easily deserve five stars.

Tim Sale's art is, as always, completely and totally amazing. I believe this is from around the time of the first Batman Halloween specials, and this looks much better to me than his early Batman stuff (he certaintly perfected his style later and his Batman specifically by the time of the his and Loeb's later work together,)

3 1/2 stars for the story, Five stars for the art.

Ahead of its time--.......2005-03-15

It takes a village to raise a kid: chortle all you like at the cliche, but there's a reason it's so dam' prevalent. It's true.

It also takes a village to raise a superhero, and keep them in tights. For a while, it's been popular to look at the symbiotic relationship between superheroes and supervillains, and how the one needs and feeds on the other, and what does this say about us? —Far better, far more rewarding, far more humane to look at the symbiotic relationship between the superhero and the people they fight for, live with, protect, save.

And if the superhero discovers a different source of power than tights, and masks, and fists? Well. That would be telling.

Billi was written in the mad old bad old days of the first Bush recession, and it will remind you that we've all been justifiably angry and full of despair and longing for hope before. Like a lot of us, I got seduced by the fool's gold of a very different 1999, and I set Billi aside; that Sarah was just a little ahead of her time doesn't make this any less of a powerful tonic for the here and now.

Disappointed.......2004-12-05

I read the entire volume out of the vain hope that it would grow more interesting and compelling. Unfortunately, it did not. The art was the best part for me and I didn't even really care for it. It would be hard to choose which I disliked the most: the plot, the characters, or the dialogue. Contrived, forced, and uninspiring all come to mind as words that could be used described all three.

EVEREST AS A TROPHY MOUNTAIN..........2003-09-02

This is yet another perspective of the 1996 Everest tragedy by a survivor of the fiasco. Written in journal style, the author at times frames her thoughts in a staccato, stream of consciousness, rambling fashion, coupled with new age psycho babble. At other times, she intones in a pseudo profound way about Everest. The author comes off as a silly, vapid individual.

It is interesting to note that while the author refers to Scott Fischer's expedition (of which she was a member) as an environmental one with a mission to clean up the debris on Everest left by expeditioners, nowhere does she state what it was that those on Scott Fischer's expedition were going to do to ameliorate the mess on the mountain. While she climbs up and down Everest, acclimatizing herself, she does not appear to be doing anything that remotely resembles conservation or clean up. Nor does she indicate any affirmative interest in doing anything constructive to that end.

She intones about the consequences of hubris up on the mountain. Yet, she, who had never before climbed Everest, was insisting that she would climb it without oxygen. She was even getting into arguments about it with Scott Fischer, who had the sense to tell her she would be climbing with oxygen. As it turned out, he was right. She could barely make it with oxygen. She should thank her lucky stars that he was so insistent that she climb with oxygen, otherwise she, too, would probably have died on Everest.

She also incessantly refers to herself as a mountain climber, but she didn't even know what gear she should take, relying on the recommendations of others, and then criticizing their recommendations when they ran counter to her expectations. It is clear, no matter how she wants to dress up her reasons for climbing Everest, that it was just a trophy mountain for her. She hoped that climbing Everest would gild the path for her to some psuedo celebrity status in her country of Denmark.

Her take on Anatoli Boukreev is much more sympathetic than was Jon Krakauer's in his book Into Thin Air. She saw Anatoli as an asset and misunderstood because of his taciturn demeanor. Anatoli comes off very well in this account. In fact, her take on him is much more sympathetic than her take on Scott Fischer, in whom she was apparently disappointed as an expedition leader. I must say if she acted the way she described in her book, then Scott Fischer, who was a true mountaineer, must of been heartily sick of her bravado about climbing Everest without oxygen. Her inflated sense of self is truly staggering at times. When she talks about hubris, she would do well to look no further than her own mirror.
