Book Description

Along with the settlement of the Texas frontier came rustlers, public drunks, gunfighters, and other outlaws. A jail in which to incarcerate the lawbreaker was thus often the first public building raised in a new town.

Later, as government developed, public buildings—notably county courthouses and jails—assumed not only practical but also symbolic importance. The architecture of these buildings in the nineteenth century reflected the power and status with which the community imbued the government; many of the same architects applied the aesthetic standards of the day to both. In later years, the safety and at least limited comfort of the prisoners became concerns and jails were remodeled or abandoned to other uses in favor of modern, more utilitarian structures.

In this heavily illustrated guide to the historic county jails of Texas, Edward A. Blackburn, Jr., takes readers to each of the 254 counties in the state, presenting brief histories of the counties and the structures that housed their criminals. He provides general information about the architecture and location of the buildings and, when possible, describes the present uses of those that have been decommissioned.

Interviews with local officials, historians, and newspaper publishers have yielded colorful anecdotes for many of the jails. Revealing photographs of many of the old jails have been gathered from local and archival sources, and Blackburn himself has taken pictures of extant buildings. Together, these words and images not only provide a survey of the way Texans have housed their criminals, but also, with the aid of thumbnail maps of county locations, offer residents and tourists throughout the state a guide to a fascinating aspect of architectural and cultural history.

Edward A. Blackburn, Jr., a retired Houston physician, visited all 254 Texas counties in the preparation of his book - Wanted: Historic County Jails of Texas. In addition to examining the early forms of confinement at the county level, Dr. Blackburn also provides the reader a brief history of the county. Persons interested in the history of corrections in Texas, especially at the local level, would find this book compelling.

I am never disappointed by Helen VanWyk. Here books are always five star and full of great information. A winner with beautiful artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book.......2006-06-30

Do you paint portraits in oil? Then you will find yourself referring to this book again and again. No other book breaks it down quite like Helen does. She covers any questions you may have about painting portraits in oil in a clear, detailed way.

1 out of 5 stars Available copies not worth the Price.......2006-02-18

While I value Helen Van Wyk's teaching style this is not her best contribution. That being said, it was certainly worth the retail price when it was in print. The recent price escalation since it went out of print bumps it down at least two stars and perhaps four. My advice is to write Helen Van Wyk,s estate/publishing company ( most likely her husband ) and encourage a reprint. In the meantime go to the library, read it, return it, and let the price mongers keep their books.

5 out of 5 stars Informative Book.......2001-12-15

I am new to oil painting and found this book very helpful in many areas. It covers working with live models , when and how to do this. How to begin your painting, color and many other areas in your painting. I think it will be of great help for my success in oil painting. It does not cover types of paint to use but it clearly tells you that is not the books purpose. I have only had it for a few weeks but have already gone thru it completely and feel like I have learned quite a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Master Oil Portraits.......2000-10-05

As always, Helen Van Wyk style of masterfully illustrating the techniques from the start to the finish of portrait painting is well presented in this book. I found the book very useful in solving some of the problems that I could not seem to overcome. I now keep the book handy and refer to her whenever I find a challenging face to paint.

I would recommend this book not only for the techniques that she provides but also for the variety of illustrations that will help any level of oil painter improve their skills. From cover to cover, this book is a bargin to both the beginning painter and the master.

      Book Description

The German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt, headquartered in Germany and Luxembourg, has significantly extended its collection of photographs in the last year, acquiring primarily large-format works by upcoming artists. Hence the necessity to produce XL Photography 2, sequel to the two-year-old XL Photography. This volume features photographers who employ an unparalleled range of modes of design and expression, spanning the rather classical black-and-white photographs of Nicholas Nixon and the cool color photographs of Stephen Shore, as well as the innovative One-Minute Sculptures of Erwin Wurm. Under the artistic guidance of Jean-Christophe Ammann, the photographic collection of the German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt places established artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, SebastiNo Selgado, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Rineke Dijkstra, Roni Horn, and Jrgen Teller next to younger, as yet-undiscovered talents. This luxuriously designed, large-scale picture book represents all significant positions taken by photography in the past ten years.

      Book Description

The Brown Sisters presents a photographic project as compelling in effect as it is simple in conception: four women, 25 years. Each year since 1975 photographer Nicholas Nixon has made a group portrait of his wife and her three sisters facing the camera in the same order: Heather, Mimi, Bebe, and Laurie. The series now measures a quarter century in the lives of the sisters, who in 1975 ranged in age from 15 to 25; each picture is dense with allusions to the year of experience that separates it from the one before.

5 out of 5 stars An unpretentious masterpiece.......2000-05-01

Many of us are called to do this kind of project. Few of us choose to do it because we fear we can't.

Several years ago I saw two of the "Brown Sisters" and never forgot them. "I hope he keeps this up, but I doubt he can. Relationships change. People's goals change. People are vain." So I thought until I read the dedication and thanks in the front of this book years later.

This work ranks with Stieglitz's accidental portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe. Stieglitz, however, makes you want to know a beautiful and unique woman through his poetic intimatcy. Nixon makes you want to know someone as well as he knows the Brown sisters, perhaps as well as they know each other, through a simple directness that few of us have the courage to see or show to each other.

Photography is about time. The Brown Sisters remind us that the value of time is measured by the respect we give each other. This work is direct, primitive and undeniable. It has what Malraux called the sense of inevitability.

I suspect that the older you are the more you will get from this portrait. If you are young, yow will remember it it 10, 20, 30 and more years from now.

If this book doesn't move you, you are either in denial or you should seek some new line of work that doesn't require you to be alive.

3 out of 5 stars Wake me when you're done.......2000-04-18

This is interesting but other than the timespan not that moving. Good for Nick Nixon that he uses a 8X10 view camera. So what? Good for the Brown sisters that, over time, their relationship with each other changes. I hope it contunues to follow a happy and loving course. The book is a real snooze though. Sorry gang, I left this one on the MOMA bookshelf and suggest you do the same.

      5 out of 5 stars My inspiration.......2000-02-12

No words can describe the work of this photographer. He is in My humble opinion the greatist photographer of the century. Im honored to have been part of his instruction.

I bought this book after Mr Nixon came to our house to take portraits of my husband and me for a current project. I hadn't known his work before and was intrigued when I saw the big turn-of-the-century camera!

This book shows pictures of Mr Nixon's children and wife in everyday situations, incredibly direct, sincere, and humorous - you feel like you're there with them, only unseen, a ghost invading their family warmth.

but it is worth it. This is a retrospective book of sorts, and has a good selection of Nixon's past and current projects, which include city scapes, pictures of people, family pictures, old people, couples, and the Brown Sisters. The layout is great (especially the treatment of the Brown Sisters project) and the reproductions are beautiful.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A different kind of 'Skeleton Key' story.......2001-03-29

From the outset, the main characters, Tamsin and Kitsune, in this series of graphic novels have been changing and maturing. With this, the fifth volume, they appear to have finally grown up. As an underscoring of that, this book is also the one that has the fewest fantastical elements, with the Skeleton Key not being used even one time.

'Roots' has none of the fantasy elements that were present in earlier volumes in the series--Tamsin refuses Kitsune's requests to go world-hopping with the Skeleton Key more than once, Mr. Racoon hardly does anything at all, and Kitsune all but gives up her magical nature and learns how to fit into the 'real' world of Garfield.

In some ways, the lack of magic makes 'Roots' a curious period at the end of the 'Skeleton Key' series. (I may be assuming too much, but this book felt like the *end* of the adventure.) On the other hand, it works nicely as a story about that stage we all have to face in our lives... the one where the kid stuff has to be set aside and we have to focus on finally mastering the skills we're going to need to survive outside "the nest," not to mention LEAVING the nest.

However, the kid stuff never fully leaves us, and we can always return to it when the time is right. So, maybe, Kitsune and Tamsin will have more adventures in the future.

Whatever happens, Andi Watson delivered another nice read, with characters as charming as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Not just about bees.......2007-09-30

Beeing is about learning to deal with life, from the big problems down to the little ones. It is about learning those lessons we all learn about in this school we call life. And understanding that we will never learn everything. We are always students.
But be warned, that the book is very much a emotional roller coaster ride, making me both laugh and cry. Also, I learned as much about beekeeping from this book as I have from books written by beekeepers. The author Rosanne Daryl Thomas really crafts a lovely and heart felt memoir.

5 out of 5 stars Bees and life.......2004-02-26

I love reading books about someone passionately engaged in something new, and this book is exactly that. Author Rosanne Daryl Thomas tells a tale of becoming a beekeeper almost on a whim, but it goes deeper than that. Clearly, there was something that drew her to the bees. It simply took circumstance to bring it forward. More importantly, she triumphs over the setbacks that occur with an honesty that seems missing in many books today. Reading this story was like listening to her tell it over coffee in her honey-covered kitchen.

Thomas' tales of learning the beekeeping trade from the bottom up are humorous, enlightening and presented in a conversational tone that kept me turning the pages. So much so that I finished the book in 1 day! She also throws in a few lessons about life and love, without being heavy handed or bogging down the story.

Even as someone who knew a little bit about beekeeping, I learned new stuff about the processes involved. For the gardener in me, it is great to learn a little more about how my garden helps bees to survive and thrive. My neighbor has a single hive on top of his garden shed and I can sit in my garden swing, watching their comings and goings. He makes sure we get some honey each year, too. Tasty! Even more so since part of it arose from my garden.

Several of my favorite books are based around the cycle of the year's passage. I think growing up on a farm certainly plays a part in this, but we all instinctively relate to the passing of the seasons in some way.

                4 out of 5 stars A HONEY OF A BOOK.......2003-01-29

While most of us give a wide berth to stinging insects, memoirist Roseanne Daryl Thomas cozies up to bees, affectionately calling them "my girls." - quite an about face for one whose prior knowledge of apian life consisted of "They buzzed. They stung. They were yellow."

Following a divorce Ms. Thomas, her then 7-year-old daughter, August, and Ruffy, a geriatric cat, sought new life in a small New England community populated by 3,000 inquisitive souls.

There she met Farmer Tom; farmer being an unlikely sobriquet for a man with clean fingernails and a business card. Another unlikelihood was Ms. Thomas's out-of-nowhere comment that she might like to keep bees. At this, her daughter smiled, and Farmer Tom offered his land.

Smitten with the idea of having a mother who was a bee keeper, August "danced jubilantly about the house, composing beekeeping songs, drawing beekeeping pictures." Not wishing to disappoint her daughter, and just a little enthralled by the idea herself, Ms. Thomas began a task about which she knew "a teaspoonful more than absolutely nothing."

She visited a master beekeeper who introduced her to a hive body or deep super where bees live. Inside the deep super would be wax covered moveable frames where honey is made. . To her chagrin these did not come ready made, but had to be assembled - a daunting task for one who was not sure she owned a hammer. She bought three unassembled hives.

Another necessity was "The Outfit," first of all, gloves, elbow length cotton covered with yellow latex. Gloves did not come in a 7 ½; the smallest size in the white beesuit was a men's 42 regular. Finally, the hat. She was hoping for something in "a pale gold closely woven straw." Instead, she was handed "a hard white plastic pith helmet with ventilation grates at the temples."

There was no time for second thoughts as she had also ordered six living pounds of Italian honeybees. (According to the Bee Master Italian honeybees had the best dispositions). After many bruised fingers, considerable help from a friend, and countless visits to True Value, the hives were ready. Named Har, Jafenhar, and Thridi for the mythic trio who guard Valhalla, they were placed on Farmer Tom's land.

Weeks passed as Ms. Thomas tended her bees, sloshing through the field in Wellingtons bearing Ball jars of sugar water and toting other necessities in a lavender Bergdorf's shopping bag. With each visit she felt a deepening affinity for that spot of earth. Her respect for the natural world grew as she observed a blue heron seeking sustenance, and heavily laden black ants climbing ant mountains.

After a year the author had survived numerous stings and slings of fortune. She harvested her first crop with the observation that she had learned much but not enough.
Readers will find that they have learned much about bee keeping but not enough about Rosanne Daryl Thomas. "Beeing" is a memoir oddly lacking in emotional intimacy. Her marriage is dismissed with several lines, and there is scant reference to personal feelings. As "Motherhood" is found in the subtitle, one wonders what August's response was to the breakup of her home, and moving to a new community. Did Ms. Thomas ever address these issues with her daughter?

Practical matters also prove puzzling. With no apparent income how does one undertake a costly hobby that requires full time attention? Questions remain unanswered.

Nonetheless, "Being" is fluidly penned, at times lyric in descriptions of the changing seasons. And, there are lessons to be learned in this memoir, not the least of which is, "If you want to get honey, you have to be prepared to get stung."

There's no question at all about that.

and completely charming. (also inspiring: makes you

It is the gift I want to give my favorite friends and

What a great read! Thomas breezes us through a year in the life of an unstoppable single mom, as seen through the lens of a novice beekeeper. She braves the vicissitudes of her first year of beekeeping with pathos, humor, intelligence and grace. As she interweaves her care and tending of the bees and their hives with the care and tending of her daughter, herself and their memorable home, I turned page after page with an ever-widening smile. Many thanks to the author for granting me a glimpse into her personal and universal world.

                5 out of 5 stars Beeing.......2002-12-07

What a deeply satisfying book, rich in character, witty and warm, reflective without being ponderous, a marvellous read that holds your attention. Recounting her troubles and travails as a novice beekeeper and single mother in a quaint New England town, Rosanne Thomas creates a vivid collection of characters full of quirks yet helpful and kind as she struggles to juggle the challenges of three buzzing hives, a number of unsuitable suitors and the vagaries of nature with the needs of her sensitive, bright young daughter. In the process she paints a panorama of life and death, courage and perseverance with such intelligence, humor and charm and renders the beauty of nature with such deft but delicate strokes that I laughed, spilt a tear, and will never again spread honey on my toast without acknowledging the painstacking labor of love it takes to produce. Beeing offers us by example the gift of true being.
