Book Description
The words we use when we talk and write about architecture describe more than just bricks and mortarthey indicate the ways we think of and live with buildings. This original and thoughtful study provides the first thorough examination of the relationship between architecture and language as complex social practices.
The first section of the book consists of six rigorously argued essays that investigate the language of modernism, language and drawing, "masculine and feminine" architecture, language metaphors, science in architecture, and the social properties of architecture. The second part provides a vocabulary of key words, providing rich analyses of critical terms such as Character, Form, History, and Space. Each investigation locates a word's modern meaning within a framework of historical enquiry and theoretical discussion, setting out clearly the term's invention and treatment by architects, historians, philosophers, critics, and the people who actually use buildings.
This wholly original study changes and enriches the way we think and talk about architecture, and will interest anyone concerned with architecture and culture in the modern era. 216 illustrations.

Katagami: Japanese textile stencils in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum
ASIN: 0834801329 |
Book Description
Photographs have had an integral and complex role in many anthropological contexts, from fieldwork to museum exhibitions. This book explores how approaching anthropological photographs as 'history' can offer both theoretical and empirical insights into these roles. Photographs are thought to make problematic history because of their ambiguity and 'rawness'. In short, they have too many meanings. The author refutes this prejudice by exploring, through a series of case studies, precisely the potential of this raw quality to open up new perspectives.
Taking the nature of photography as her starting point, the author argues that photographs are not merely pictures of things but are part of a dynamic and fluid historical dialogue, which is active not only in the creation of the photograph but in its subsequent social biography in archive and museum spaces, past and present. In this context, the book challenges any uniform view of anthropological photography and its resulting archives. Drawing on a variety of examples, largely from the Pacific, the book demonstrates how close readings of photographs reveal not only western agendas, but also many layers of differing historical and cross-cultural experiences. That is, photographs can 'spring leaks' to show an alternative viewpoint. These themes are developed further by examining the dynamics of photographs and issues around them as used by contemporary artists and curators and presented to an increasingly varied public.
This book convincingly demonstrates photographs' potential to articulate histories other than those of their immediate appearances, a potential that can no longer be neglected by scholars and institutions.

Book Description
This stunning graphic novel details cartoonist Rick Smith's travels with his wife Tania throughout Morocco, from Tangiers through the Sahara Desert and on the Marrakech and Casablanca. From hassles with transportation and the locals to language barriers and drugged carpet sales, this travelogue is a whirlwind through pre-9/11 Morocco.
Customer Reviews:
Misdirection in several ways.......2005-10-25
This is not a scholarly book, nor even a sensationalized potboiler in the tradition of Hans Holzer, Jess Stearn, or the fictional Sidney Redlitch. It's a comic book...and even "Dennis the Menace Visits Mexico", a twenty-five-cent Super-Giant published around 1960, showed a better understanding and explication of a country and its culture and
history, and had better art besides.
Not a Prize Winner.......2005-04-19
Okay, the first thing that should be noted about Baraka and Black Magic is that it is not an official publication of the Moroccan Tourist Board and it will never win an award for its depiction of Moroccan culture. This is the first book from Alternative Comics in which I have been disappointed. This book is far inferior to the more accomplished "Carnet de Voyage" by Craig Thompson which happens to cover some of the same Moroccan territory. While both books are diaristic, Black Magic seems more like a mish-mash of episodes on a bad vacation than a true travelogue that covers many excursions and experiences. Smith's experience of Morocco seems to have been a fairly miserable one with his constant derision of the people coupled with the fact that he seemed perpetually stoned. I read a preview of a couple of pages prior to purchasing the book, so it's hard for me to say I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting into by purchasing this book, but the relatively poor drawing and thinness of the tale left me a bit cold. Black Magic is not a bad book, it's just not a great one.

Customer Reviews:
Wouldn't recommend it............2007-10-11
This is the first book by this author that I've ever read, and I'm sorry to say that I wasn't impressed. I didn't really like her writing style. The humor was tasteless at times and the overall feel of the dialogue seemed rude and vulgar.
I really never bought in to the couple featured in this book. Veronica was a woman that I wanted to like, but just couldn't. I can't even put my finger on it exactly, but I just never got in to this story enough to care who killed her sister, whether or not the misunderstandings ever got resolved, or even whether or not she and Coop got together. Cooper was crass and I never liked him either. The only saving grace for this book was the little girl Lizzy. She is the only character that I had any care for.
The secondary romance was shallow, contrived, and completely unnecessary to the story. I felt bored and literally had to will myself to finish this book.
I can't say that I wouldn't try another book by this author...(maybe the "Baby" books are better), but I can safely say that I will be passing on the rest of the "Marine Series".
First in the marine series is a sizzler.......2007-01-18
Restoration specialist Ronnie never thought she'd set foot in the family's honky tonk bar again, let alone work there, but when her sister Crystal is murdered and ex-husband Eddie skips town, Ronnie finds herself in unfamiliar territory playing mother to niece Lizzy and waitress in a bar she hates which is run by the mysterious former marine Cooper Blacksmith, who is hiding plenty of secrets, including the fact that he is Eddie's half brother. The attraction between the two heats up from their first meeting.
Andersen's first in the marine series is a rollicking and believable romance with a mystery tossed in. Both are running from pasts that they'd rather not face, but can't help fall for each other in this sizzling tale.
Suspenseful and unexpected.......2006-03-06
I hadn't read any of this author's books before this one so I wasn't sure what to expect.I was thinking it would be a comedy but it's more of a romantic mystery and it worked really well for that. The heroine having to work the honky tonk she hated so much and the ex-Marine hero have a compelling, entertaining relationship.
Entertaining!.......2006-02-24
I enjoyed this novel. The interaction between the characters was believeable and humorous. The murder sub-plot was interesting, too. I had no idea who killed Crystal until the end. I look forward to reading more Susan Andersen books.
Best book I've ever read!!!.......2005-06-21
This book is honestly the best book I've ever read. It made you feel warm and fuzzy, yet mad and disappointed at times, but it ended with such a great conclusion. You couldn't ask for a better storyline. They should make a movie!!
Book Description
Smart Novels are compelling, full-length novels with edgy and mature themes that will appeal to teens. Each book showcases more than 1,000 vocabulary words frequently included on the SAT. Brief definitions appear on the same page so that readers can quickly access and digest the meanings as they read along.
Customer Reviews:
Generic and Uninformative.......2006-05-30
I had read some positive reviews about Sparknotes novels, so I thought that this novel would both help my vocabulary and entertain me. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the cliched and predictable plot and characters. Not only did it feel like the writer had just taken a standard chick lit formula, changed some names, added a dash of SAT vocabulary, and forgot to add the vital cup of creativity. What disappointed me the most about the book was that it missed the common element in good chick lit- a protagonist the reader really cares about. The heroine, Francesca Castarelli, had little charcater development except the same tired teenage angst involving boys without the wit that usually accompanies it.
You may be asking why I'm so critical of an SAT novel. After all, it's just supposed to enhance vocabulary, right? It's not going to be a bestseller. Yet, the paltry definitions of the SAT words listed at the bottom attest to its uselessness. In some cases, the defintions are even wrong. For example, the word eclectic is defined in the book as meaning selective, when it means to selective or draw from a wide range of sources. The word suggest well- roundedness, not being picky, as the Head Over Heels defintion suggests. Many other defintions are misleading because the author has decided to cut defintions down to one to three words. The novel was also disappointed because, unlike the Marino Mission, another vocabulary enrichment novel, it had no exercises in the back to test your knowledge of the words so you could know whether you were actually absorbing any of the vocabulary.
So if you're desparate to learn vocabulary in less than two weeks and aren't picky when it comes to what you read, then I'd suggest buying it. It does have some moments of humor, but they are few and overshadowed by its thin and unoriginal plot.
A book for girls who like romance.......2005-12-19
The book is about two girls named Fran and Nikki, who are really good friends. The story of the girls shows the hardships for girls in high school. There are two main boys, Jeremy and Luke that have confusion with their feelings towards one another. Also, there is a conflict between the girls' friendship that needs to be worked out. I mainly liked it. There were parts that I didn't like, but they were small. The events that happened to Fran and Nikki are things that happen to most girls when looking for love, so you can relate to the book. While relating to the book, you can work on your vocabulary for the SATS or just for yourself. I felt that it was easy to understand. There are words that I didn't know but they were usually the bolded vocabulary words, which were defined on the bottom of the page.
HEAD OVER HEELS.......2004-06-07
This book was about this girl named Freancesca. She was 17. She had a complicated personality. She went to Colombus High School. Her biggest problem was this Luke because he was smarter then she was.
What I didn't like was the vocabulary because I couldn't pronounc half of the words. They didn't give good enough descriptions. What I did like was it covered a lot of stuff that happens in school.

Book Description
Beloved Christian psychologist Dr. James Dobson speaks honestly and openly about what love is and what it isn't, helping couples and dating singles understand the myths and reality of emotions. He addresses the joy and beauty of sex in marriage, and the destruction and heartbreak of sex outside of marriage. A true-or-false quiz, followed by brief discussions of each question and answer, emphasizes and explains the most common misconceptions of love. A learning/discussion section, containing questions and Scripture references to be used individually or in a group setting, follows the discussion on romantic love. Highlighted with callouts and a section entitled the "Interpretations of Impressions," this practical yet hard-hitting book ends with a poignant letter from Dr. Dobson to his beloved wife, Shirley.

Customer Reviews:
Loved this book!.......2006-02-28
This is book two of a series about a school inspector in Yorkshire and it is delightful. (You should read book one first if possible). I was first drawn to it because of my enjoyment of James Herriot's books but after just a few pages I was hooked on it for its own merits. Any one who is a parent, a teacher, or just a lover of children will enjoy this. It is a gentle story with a running thread of romance but the primary emphasis is on the children and the teachers in the various schools inspected by Mr. Phinn. He obviously loves his job and is passionate about helping children reach for the stars. I'm really looking forward to books three and four.
