Customer Reviews:
Graveyard primer succinct success.......2006-07-17
This provides exactly the information one needs to (a) appreciate the historical and material sensitivity of gravestones/markers; and the techniques, tools, and materials available to the interested amateur as well as professional to appropriately salvage, restore and protect these sensitive, often forgotten, resources. Especially useful for 17th-19th century graveyards and markers.
Leave your wire brush at home...........2005-11-19
You'd think to clean an old gravestone all you'd need is a wire brush and some bleach, right? Or maybe a sand blaster? Turns out, that couldn't be more wrong. A Graveyard Preservation Primer is the most up to date guide for those wishing to conserve the old stones in their local graveyards, without unwittingly causing more damage. Materials and techniques for safely ridding stones of lichen, molds, and just plain dirt are explained, and they turn out to be surprisingly simple. But get ready to apply some good old fashioned elbow grease. As far as conserving/repairing stones that have already incurred damage, this has now become science, and Strangstad warns that it should not be undertaken by amateurs, however well-intentioned. Suggestions for locating professional assistance are included in this comprehensive manual. Anyone interested in cemetery preservation should begin by reading this work.
Exactly what it's entitled.......2001-01-04
This is a great concise, basic book on graveyard preservation - a real "primer" indeed. Anyone interested in such work should read this through at least once before ever attempting it, then it can be a quick reference after that. Covers briefly yet thoroughly all aspects of gravesite preservation, explaining what you'll have to think about even if it can't give you precise instruction. Lynnette Strangstad, writing for the Association for Gravestone Studies (AGS), does a fine job and includes bibliography and even some possible contacts for proceeding on preservation.
By far, this is the most comprehensive book out on the topic.......1998-07-13
The Graveyard Preservation Primer is a must read for anyone interested in the reasons to save old graveyards and how to go about doing so in a respectful and historically accurate manner. Her book is well researched and well written. It is straightforward and simple enough for novices, yet has enough insightful information for even the most informed reader. Her topics range from how to organize volunteers to do gravestone and graveyard cleaning to photographic techniques to get outstanding records of the stones. Her suggestions for cleaning techniques are well researched and very sound. Overall, this is just a superb manual. A must read before any work is done on an old graveyard. It will also enhance the experience of the graveyard afficionado, by exposing them to a whole new set of ways to observe the gravestones and yard.

Best of Bauhaus: An in-depth study of the seminal movement in art and architecture...
The Bauhaus Archiv Museum of Design in Berlin holds the most important collection on the Bauhaus today. Documents, workshop products from all areas of design, studies sketches in the classroom, and architectural plans and models are all part of its comprehensive inventory. The Bauhaus Archiv is dedicated to the study and presentation of the history of the Bauhaus, including the new Bauhaus in Chicago and the Hochschule für Gestaltung (Institute of Design) in Ulm. This book, drawn from the Archiv's extensive collection, traces this monumental movement in art and architecture via the work of its most important proponents, including Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Vassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee.
Customer Reviews:
What makes this one stand out as a must read book about Bauhaus.......2006-05-12
If you want a comprehensive historical information as well as tons of full color photos of all sorts of Bauhaus inspired works -from architecture to practical objects - this is the book you should have. Open it and read a single article, think about it and close the book. Or browse through the photos and marvel at the teapots, the furniture, the architectural style.
You can savor this one slowly (and I think you should) rather than trying to read it through all at once. If you do that, you'll start to get a sense of the Bauhaus style and how it fits into the particular period when it came into being - and how it grew and evolved from there.
Excellent source for Bauhaus visual info.......2005-10-02
While this book offers an excellent collection of images related to the Bauhaus, it traces the history and the development of the Bauhaus comprehensively as well.
This book, alongwith Eva Forgacs' Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics can give you a general idea about what the institution was all about.
Its an amazing read.
Get a new great acknowledgement!.......2000-06-07
You can know lots of new details. It helps you to study not only design but art itself.
To know about Bauhaus deeply..........2000-06-07
This book has great studies. Lots of new details for me are in it. It helps you to study design and art histry.
Great book about a great school.......1998-02-27
Bauhaus was one of the most important movements in design-history.
Magdalena Drosta describes the ideas, the people, the work and the spirit of the Bauhaus. The best thing: It is never boring. The book does not only concentrate on the art taught at the Bauahaus but also describes its political problems.
A lot of excellent pictures in a good priniting quality (especially in relation to the price) make this a book, you always like to look at.

Customer Reviews:
Today's Bauhaus.......2007-01-25
Many art historians consider Bauhaus to be the crucible where architectural modernism was forged. There are many iconic images of Bauhaus architecture that enthusiasts know intimately. (i.e. Barcelona Pavillion, School at Dessau, Brno, etc.) Most of those iconic images were made in the 1930's and they show these buildings at their most pristine and majestic.
What makes Hans Engles' "Bauhaus" interesting is that in 2001, he revistited and had photogaphed most of the surviving Bauhaus buildings. It is simply fascinating to see these iconic buildings in a contemporary setting. These readily accesable images bring these famous structures down to a earth. The other nice thing about this book is to learn how many of these buildings have been preserved and often times returned to their original conception.
In the United States, we are fortunate that the German publishing companies like Prestel, Taschen and Koneman are translating many of their architecture works into English. These German architectural books are some of the most exciting and reasonably priced books being produced today. If you are interested in seeing what Bauhaus looks like today, this is the book for you. Highly recommended.

Barbara Norfleet's bugs are more human than humans. In this remarkable collection of photographs, Norfleet has posed insects and arachnids in dioramas that profoundly illustrate the failings and foibles of our own species. In his foreword, entomologist E.O. Wilson notes, "The artist means to tell us something about human nature, particularly in its more vainglorious, cowardly, and other foolish manifestations."
Photos of human workers engaged in meaningless toil would make a somewhat overdone point, but Norfleet's carefully posed insects and strange, barren landscapes pull us away from the familiar just enough to make us see things we might have missed. Her gorgeous and rare insects are so peculiar, so engagingly presented that they provoke brand-new reactions to such activities as capital punishment, domestication of other animals, and war. In one photo entitled Little Time for Whimsy, a line of serious beetles works hard at pushing their burdens--Where? Why? And for how long? You may as well ask why some of us voluntarily sit in cubicles eight hours a day. Another diorama (Am I Pretty?) gently mocks vanity as a line of garishly colored tropical beetles competes for the gold star that will presumably bring ultimate satisfaction. Insect society seems to have a lot in common with our own. Besides the thoughtful and clever poses, each photo affords a close look at some of the most amazing creatures you'll ever see. It's a wonderland of entomological ecstasy. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
From one of America's most distinguished and quirkily gifted photographers, a wildly original book of images that chronicles--and critiques--the curiously familiar social life of bugs.
Barbara Norfleet loves bugs for both their beauty and their strangeness, and the fact that they've been on earth so much longer than the human race that they make us look like new kids on the block. In this remarkable collection, she sets out to explore her own vision of bug society--its feelings, its relationships and rituals, its neuroses and malaises at the end of what is, after all, just one more millennium in bug history. From a grasshopper poised triumphantly atop a rock and a spindly-armed pair of Harlequin beetles dancing, to a group of twittering bugs gathered to watch the sun set, a beetle beauty pageant, and a bug hanging, Norfleet captures with extraordinary humor and perception an amazing reflection of our own experience and feelings. Most wonderful of all is what we are led to discover--that bugs are us.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Take on The World.......2007-05-24
Illusions... fits into many categories: entomology, graphic art, or insect appreciation perhaps. Whatever the subdivision of this work may be, I myself found it very appealing. Similar to her numerous other works, she grabs the viewer here - calling my personal perspectives concerning human nature into question. One thing is certain about Barbara Norfleet's collection - she is an admirer of insects, from the mundane to the rare species, a woman of immense talent.
Compelling narrative still life.......2002-01-27
While not for the overtly squeamish, since her "actors" are various tropical bugs and spiders, this is a very compelling photo collection. Even while it is obviously a constructed still life, these scenes crackle with life, energy, and meaning, poking gentle -- and not so gentle -- fun at the human condition.

Bought this book for my dad and now for my brother who are both addicted to model railroads. It is so true and such a funny book. Every page had me laughing. My dad took it to his breakfast club and they all sat around laughing at it. Great book, every model railroader should have it.

Book Description
The abrupt migration to client/server distributed environments has had an enormous impact on the structure of IT organization and expectations of the IT function. Distributed systems have changed not only the way we access our data but also the way we program, interface, and network. In the tradition of David Taylor's bestselling Business Engineering with Object Technology (also from Wiley), this book provides a comprehensive management overview of the technical issues presented by distributed environments, including planning and building the environment, developing new applications, and managing the network. There are also practical suggestions for managing change, training staff, and reengineering the IT function.
Customer Reviews:
Great for managers and mainframe types making the change.......2001-04-20
As someone who spent 24 years in "legacy" environments and who is now in the distributed world I found this book to be some of the most complete guides in print to making the transition.
What I really liked about this book is how the authors skillfully blended the descriptions of technologies in the distributed world with the methods and approach that characterize the "legacy" world. This is because distributed computing has a lot to offer from a technology point of view, but management of distributed systems lags behind the "legacy" world. My move was a lot like migrating from a predictable world of methods, processes and procedures to the wild west.
Some of the specific highlights were: very clear description of client/server systems and the underlying components. I personally gained a lot from the discussions on object technology, building distributed applications, and building extensible systems. The latter was especially useful to me because it exposed me to COM, Java and XML, and how these fit into the picture. Coming from a world where the standard buzzwords were CICS, JCL and the such I needed to fully understand the world in which I now work, and this book gave me an understanding of the technical underpinnings and their strengths and weaknesses.
Where this book blends the "legacy" and distributed worlds is in the chapters that deal with managing distributed systems. I gained two deep insights from this section: (1) managing distributed systems is a quantum leap in complexity from managing host-based systems, and (2) the processes and tools used to manage today's distributed systems have not reached the maturity of those that we used twenty years ago in the mainframe world. The authors did an excellent job of pointing out the challenges and realities of distributed systems management, and did a wonderful job of tying this to service level management using core business objectives as the bridge.
This book is truly a manager's guide that covers a lot of ground in technology and processes. It is too high-level for hand's-on technical folks who have worked in distributed environments, but is a wonderful source of information for people like myself who spent most of their career in mainframes and need to evolve into this wild environment called distributed computing. I enjoyed the book, gained a lot from it and recommend it to my former colleagues who are still in the "legacy" environment.
Falls far short in security and management of networks........1999-10-05
While the book does a very good job of laying out options for building distributed environments, it falls far short in some critical areas. Neither directories, security, PKI, nor directory enabled networks (DEN) are adequately covered. As a matter of fact only security receives any coverage at all.
Security has 11 entries in the index, but none go beyond defining the role of security. There is no mention of how to implement security in a distributed environment.
Directories are not even listed in the index. Directories are crucial to the management and security of networks in a distributed environment. The directory enabled network (DEN) initiative is a standard interoperable approach that will be widely supported (if vendors are to be believed). DEN is absolutely necessary if distributed networks are to provide the reliability and security needed by enterprises.
Closely related to DEN is public key cryptography (PKI) which does not even show up in the index. Enterprises building extra-nets will need the security provided by the use of PKI.
These omissions cause me to give a low rating to an otherwise good book on distributed computing.
A great source to help bridge IT and the Business Unit.......1999-03-18
Chapter 7 of this book is excellent at covering the issues that are key to bridging the gap between IT and the Business Unit.
IT needs to measure "success" in terms of business-meaningful terms - this book (and chapter 7 in particular) helps redefine IT success and focus IT on the issues critical to business alignment in the coming years.
Excellent Guide with Insightful Solutions For All.......1999-01-08
Ptak et al. have succeeded in cutting through the dark and mysterious world of information technology to present a thorough guide to all interested in the current state of enterprise computing. It is a practical and insightful work that will aid all in tackling these evolving and complex issues.
Good overview of IT issues from a managers view.......1998-12-02
This book addresses the communication gap between business managers and technical IT managers. With minimal technical jargon it explains the issues and trends that IT wrestles with and tells in an understandable way how managers on both sides of the fence can more effectively work with and use their IT staff. It discusses the challenges of product selection without sounding preachy or being a vendor shell.

Broad overview, poor on detail- a true newbie's book.......2004-12-31
Anyone seeking to enter the world of commercial real estate will likely not benefit much from the Vault Guide to Real Estate. The information it contains is largely an overview and description of the culture of the industry. In my own research, I strongly believe (having been through the process of finding a commercial real estate job) that most of this information can be gleaned from a one hour conversation with almost anyone in the business. If you are extremely new to the field (i.e. know almost nothing about it) then this book could prove helpful.
Unlike the Vault financial guides, this resource does not go into the basic real estate terms and calculations that almost everyone in the field should know (NOI, Capitalization Rates, Competitive Analysis, RE loan terms, vacancy calculations, lease analysis, operating expense ratios, property valuation, etc.). In fact, I would recommend the Vault finance guides over this text, even for real estate- you will be better prepared for your interviews.
Anyone serious about the field will need to learn the numbers from another resource, possibly a CCIM course, "Real Estate Finance and Investments" or "The Real Estate Game". Again, the Vault book gives a a nice "soft" overview of the industry, but lacks the detailed substance necessary to understand how the real estate business works from a practitioner's standpoint.
To be fair, the book has some good suggestions on how to get a foot in the door in the business, etc. Nonetheless, you will not (by a long shot) be prepared for a real estate interview by reading this book alone. For an easy and fast introduction to the field it's a decent start.
