5 out of 5 stars A Donation to the Public Library.......2007-07-25

This was my second copy of this wonderful book, and arrived in such great shape that it made for a perfect donation to our small town library. It was the first tome covering straw bale building on Blanche K. Werner's shelves and has been constantly checked out. I am currently ordering another volume

4 out of 5 stars A good read about the trials of taking the straw bale route.......2007-01-08

Not a story about exactly how to build your own straw bale house ... rather an easy read about one woman's choice faced with adveristy in her life and wishing to provide an economical, quality solution to a home for herself and her two sons. There is lots of good information about the stumbling blocks one must face, especially at a time when this architecture was relatively new to the Tucson area. Mostly I found in this book what I was looking for personally ... a story of inspiration and success. As it happens I have had the opportunity to see the final product and it is truly a beautiful home in an area close to the city of Tucson but remote enough, and on enough land to allow further exploration of alternative energy and a self sufficient lifestyle. Carolyn has done a magnificent job of making her home happen and of writing the story about it.

4 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for the Soul, for the Straw Bale Builder..........2002-09-20

Chicken soup, that is, with a lot of nuts and bolts thrown in for extra fiber!! All though this is, more of a what happens to you in the process book, than it's a "how to do it" book? It should be the second book following "Build it with Bales II," that you should read. Even if written from the female perspective? It will give anyone invaluable insight regardless of your gender, to build your dream home (right). Without needlessly killing yourself or your spouse (or kids) in the process. Her centering herself in spirit and connection to the earth pulls her through, as it will you. After buying and reading this book, you can move on to the other coffee table books on the topic.

I'll admit bias, I was there in the early stages to help Carolyn get her dream up, and out of the desert dirt. I am "Spuds" (Chapter 9). Until I read further into the process, I couldn't believe she would have had more difficult times? After working hand and glove, sweat and toil with this absolute dynamo of a woman? I can tell you she writes it as it happened and her writting, reads just like she speaks.. honest, straight forward, focused, sincere and connected to her purpose. By keeping focused on the goal, she surmounts obsticles that most of us would cave into. But not her. Due to her indominatable connection to spirit, she, rejects "no" for an answer. It didn't take me long to learn that aspect of her persona first hand.

In the previous reviews, short shrift was given to the envolvement of community and personal commitment in the process.
Carolyn, would be the first to step forward with a long list of names. The point being, Staw Bale, by it's nature is a event that "makes" community happen, and long lasting friends.

Of all the books written of the topic, this one alone stands as the testimate from the beginning of the dream to the; blood, sweat, tears, fears, and toil it takes... It's just not that easy. If you think it is? Read this. And, if you take her path, you'll eventually feel the same gratification, and relief that is "almost" done....

I'll sum up her book in one word.. backbone! She's got it. If she can get it done, so can you. If you doubt it? Start reading.

5 out of 5 stars Building a simpler life.......2002-08-23

This is a great book of building dreams and manifesting your own destiny. As I read I was brought out into the hot sun, crying, sweating and blistering along with the builder. It has never ceased to amaze me what human beings can bring about if they really put their mind to it. Carolyn Roberts is truly a warrior of life and creates a reality we can all live with. Keeping life simple allows one to focus on realizing one's dreams. And Carolyn's dream is one of giving. Giving back to Mother Earth and giving us a good example of how simple, healthy, loving life can be.

If you are interested in building a house, especially one of straw, this is a must read. It prepares you for the pitfalls and the joys of accomplishing challenges you never thought you could.

5 out of 5 stars An Emotional How-To Manual For Building Your Dream Home.......2002-08-14

This truly is a great read whether you're building a house of straw, wood, recycled soda bottles, old tires or anything else. Although I wouldn't consider this a how-to-manual, it really does provide the reader with a great deal of information you wouldn't usually get your hands on unless you paid a building contractor or consultant. This is a fantastic story of a very brave woman who bucks the system and builds a house on her terms, her way, and largely by herself. You experience the highs and lows, mania, confusion and every other human emotion as she devotes her very being to the birth of her house. Overall, I found this to be an amazing story, written by someone with an inner strength and conviction few of us seem to possess in this day in age. Very inspiring and a must read to anyone crazy enough to embark on a similar journey.

3 out of 5 stars should be better.......2007-06-24

great book except that the maps are too small. I don't understand why all the maps needed to be orientated up, it means that most of the pages are 75% blank white paper and thus make the maps extremely small and hard to read. Kinda strange for a map book?

great book, but whoever was the layout editor should be fired...

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Christmas present for your uncle in Nantucket.......2006-11-05

If you like maps, or if you like the history of the Massachusetts shore, you'll love this book by Joseph Garver. Eighty-nine map plates are each beautifully reproduced on a single 8x12 inch page, with a facing page--usually just one--that explains the map. Thus the book is not a detailed scholarly account of either the mapmakers or their subject. At the same time, the explanations are concise, elegant, and erudite, with wonderful pearls that explain how the maps came to be made and about what the maps can tell us of the changing history of the towns. It is more cohesive than Mapping Boston, and more accessible than McCorkle's New England in Early Printed Maps. Garvers is the reference librarian of the Harvard Map Collection, and it shows, both in the broad collection of maps he has located from ten different collections, and in the deep knowledge of mapmaking revealed in the text.

      Book Description

Set against a picturesque, seaside Massachusetts town, this historical novel is a journey from all that is safe, modern, and familiar into a world that is dark, threatening, and utterly enthralling. When a mysterious figure appears from a hidden door in his home, psychologist Max Blessing and two friends pursue the stranger not just into a network of old smugglers’ tunnels but also back in time—to 1704, where they are taken captive by a desperate band of brigands. Their buccaneer captors are themselves under siege, struggling to survive on a sea patrolled by a British admiral with an obsession, watched by a turncoat rogue pirate, and haunted by the promise of a treasure that might be buried in time itself. The friends soon find that their trip is also a personal voyage, as each struggles to discover who he really is and to which world and time he really belongs.

Get ready for a journey in time travel to the recent past when pirates ruled the American coast. Every page is a ticket to exciting adventure. Every word of this fictional account is unbelievably believable. I felt like I was transported mind and body to a place of never ending anticipation and drama. Reading In the Time of Worms: An Ancient Tale of Marblehead was a heart pounding experience that reminded me of the thrill one feels when on a roller coaster. The twists and turns don't seem to end. I want more.

Written with a sure sense of time and place that recreates the Boston and Marblehead of the Henry James era, Marblehead is the story of a young girl’s coming-of-age—a magical, inevitable happening—that is not so much dictated by time or place as by destiny.

                Book Description

Known as a popular center for yachting, Marblehead has a history steeped in tales of independence and perseverance. From its early Colonial architecture to its roots in the American Revolution, this seaside town has preserved its past while moving confidently into the twenty-first century. A simple walk downtown thrusts residents and visitors alike into a bygone era. A visit to the harbor in the summer easily illustrates the importance of the sea to this thriving community. ÝÝWith images that tie the past to the present, Then & Now: Marblehead recalls the people who proudly spent their lives in the town and the places where they worked and lived. It presents images of important people, such as Uriel Crocker, who gave the town Crocker Park; Dr. Herbert Hall, founder of Marblehead Pottery; and residents whose names are still familiar today. Then & Now: Marblehead captures the moments of residents hard at work as shoemakers and fishermen and at leisure in the seaside parks. ÝÝ

Taxes for Dummies: 1998 Edition, by Eric Tyson and David J. Silverman, is another title in the bestselling Dummies series, in which Tyson has authored four other books. Accurate and reliable in its lighthearted presentation, Taxes for Dummies includes tax-planning tips that will help you save money beyond April 15. While the book is just right for the average taxpayer, it may lack for people wanting a more in-depth guide--such as those running a small business from home or those trying to figure out capital gains on a mutual fund.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Especially the Advice on Dealing with the IRS.......2005-01-09

Easy-to-read, well organized, and thoroughly helpful. I recommend "Taxes 2005 for Dummies" to people who want to prepare their own taxes, either by hand or by computer. Excellent advice and strategies for dealing with the IRS.

Table of contents lists each line of the tax form, making information easy to find. Provides instructions for the 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040. (Most books just cover the 1040.) Icons indicate tax-saving tips and warnings to keep you out of trouble. The writers have done an excellent job of turning IRS technical jargon into something we can actually understand.

The only book that guides you step by step to dealing with the IRS. If you received a letter from the IRS, this book will tell you what the letter means, and how to respond to it. The authors even provide sample letters so you can respond promptly. The exceptionally well-written advice for dealing with the IRS is worth the price of the whole book.

Information on reconstructing missing tax records is superb. The authors provide excellent suggestions for substantiating cost basis, business expenses, and fair market value.

The book does not include tax forms, so you will need to obtain them elsewhere (library, post office, on the Internet).

5 out of 5 stars Readable and Helpful.......2004-04-08

I purchased this book because I was using TaxCut Standard, which is not very helpful at times, and I got stuck on a particular form. This book helped me to understand the Individual 1040, using language that is more clear and personable than the official IRS instructions.

Anybody who itemizes deductions, or who might do so in the future, will find _Taxes for Dummies_ extremely helpful. Plus, throughout the book, there are tips for handling personal finances. Most of these are geared toward the higher-income earner, but nearly everyone can learn from the tips about home ownership and retirement savings. The advice is sound.

I strongly recommend this book as an aid for preparing one's own 2003 taxes.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but sometimes vague.......2004-03-21

I like this book a lot, because it gave me great ideas about how to structure my finances to take advantage of the tax deductions the government provides.

While the book makes it easy to read and understand your tax return, it fails in its efforts to make complicated tax issues simple. In many cases, I found more questions than answers, particularly in the parts that talk about the section 179 deduction and the modifications made after September 11, 2001.

If you are looking to be able to read and understand your tax return and to identify the tax deductions that are available, this is a great book. Even after reading it, however, you'll probably need a professional tax preparer to make sure you're doing it all correctly.

5 out of 5 stars Good no-nonsense guide to all sorts of tax situations.......2000-10-06

This book tries it's hardest to explain taxes in an easy to understand fashion for us normal people who don't have time to look through those extremely complex IRS instructions and other gibberish they give us taxpayers. The book does a pretty decent job of it too (however to accomplish that flawlessly, in my humble opinion, is impossible). Overall, any individual or small business that needs a few clues on how to do your taxes can benefit from this book. I can't wait for the 2001 edition to come out!

3 out of 5 stars Good for basics and new tax law description/definition........1999-02-21

The book answered all my questions on the new 1998 tax laws. It was also a good guideline for those of us who don't understand taxes very well and are more familiar with the EZ-forms. This was my second year doing the long form with all the attached schedules and the book helped me develop an understanding of what the majority of the terms and references mean. However, since the level of information was BASIC, some of my questions were not addressed and I did not like how the book stated, "...see your tax advisor...". The whole reason I bought the book was so that I wouldn't have to have someone else do my taxes. Although there are only a few unanswered questions for my case, this still prevented me from completing them on my own. Some topics that should be addressed more thoroughly are Capital Gains, Corporate Relocations, and Itemized Deductions. At a minimum, this book should provide a complete listing of topics not covered thoroughly enough to complete the tax forms, and refer you to another book (For Dummies)instead of a legal IRS publication (or tax advisor).
