Book Description
Resource economy, cost-cutting, environmental conservation and the use renewable energies - "integral planning" is a complex challenge requiring the interaction of various disciplines to create modern buildings with optimum efficiency whilst saving material and running costs. Active factors such as construction techniques, building skins, room layout and exterior space should reduce the need for the internal technical facilities and all passive measures exploited to the maximum. Daniel´s Advanced Building Systems provides an up-to-date overview of the latest technology in building installations, complete with a wide range of detailed technical plans. It is more than merely a systematic handbook focusing on building technology for students of architecture, civil engineering and mechanical engineering, it is also a reference work enabling the practitioner to draw up initial plans and dimensions.

Great.......2003-10-28
This book is more like reading an illustrated autobiography than a how to book. This is fine with me. Chamberlain is a master of the traditional British style landscape. With a limited palette of earth tones and simplified brush work he creates muted, moody landscapes that to my mind are more compelling than the brightly colored items in most watercolor instruction books. Its a matter of taste, but Chamberlain's work really speaks to me. He's more concerned with communicating the beauty of the world than his own artistic cleverness.
beautiful style.......2003-06-30
I like this book for the illustrations. Chamberlain has a fresh spontaneous style and draws well. The paintings illustrated are representational, easy to like, well composed and very attractive. I haven't paid much attention to the text...no criticism, I'm just burnt out long ago on how-to painting books. But this is worth while for the quality of the paintings.
Very inspiring.......2002-01-08
This is an awesome book. It has inspired me to paint on-site more and has given me some invaluable additions to my palette. His style is attractive to me because it's more masculine and similar to my own. His narrative is very inspirational and instructive. Reading it and viewing his work will get you out painting every time.
An enormously attractive plein-aire painter........1999-11-02
Trevor Chamberlain is one of the most authentic outdoor painters working today. He is a "painter's painter," and anyone who has ever picked up a brush wishes in his or her heart of hearts that Chamberlain's style could be his or her own. His books make this dream almost seem a reality.
Book Description
All the excitement and magic of watercolor emerge as a professional artist reveals his ways of working and his sources of inspiration. Observe him creating light effects, unusual juxtapositions of color, and more. There's no better way to appreciate watercolor's luminosity, sparkle, vibrancy, and sensuousness. "Here, the reader looks over the shoulder of the master...and sees how he thinks....Yardley considers ideas, tries them out, and rejects or modifies them in a personal narrative of his painting style....an inspiring, readable volume..."--Library Journal.

Better than a How-to.......2007-02-05
I learned much from this book about color, composition and still-life set-up. Ms. Kay's gouache paintings of flowers and fruit are unpretentious, yet refined and altogether beautiful. I think that any aspiring artist could learn more from reading the author's thoughts on her paintings and by simply attempting to copy, as an exercise, one of her paintings, than from any step-by-step art instruction manual. This is one of my favorite art books.
Gorgeous Paintings.......2002-02-14
Like the previous reviewer, I purchased the book because I was intrigued by gouache. However, I did not expect it to be a how-to book and it isn't. Ms. Kay does talk a lot about the medium: how to use it and its difference from transparent watercolor. There is much you can learn. Of course, the best part is Ms. Kay's collection of paintings. Beautiful, dynamic still lifes that are great for the artist, but are also great if you love gardening and flowers and would like a lovely book depicting lush roses, joyous pansies, and a number of other flowers, large and small, in terra cotta pots, small crystal goblets, everyday glasses. The settings could be your dining room table or a favorite shelf. There are also sketches of Venice, paintings of gardens, and a sleeping kitten that is wonderful (that's a lot for me to say since my idea of a real pet is a German Shepherd or Bernese Mountain Dog and nothing remotely feline, but I would gladly hang this pastel in my bedroom). There are several pastels and a number of casual portrait sketches. All are wonderfully done. I recommend the book highly.

Not a How - To Type Book.......2001-12-12
I bought this book because I was intrigued to see a book on painting in gouache (opaque watercolor). On receiving it I was surprised as it was not the type of book I expected it to be. This is not a how-to book despite what the blurbs led me to think. This is more of a book on the life, thoughts and painting experiences of Pamela Kay as she uses gouache, watercolor, pastel and oil to express herself.
As such, it is more akin to coffee-table books that display paintings by the artist. She does provide somewhat more detail into the painting and drawing process than a coffee-table art book but not as much as I'd wished. Also, after awhile, I yearned for more variety in the paintings as the book was page after page of bowls of fruit and flowers in vases. There were a few paintings of landscapes and some sketches of people but they were too few. This is not a bad book. It can be quite enjoyable for someone who is a fan of Ms. Kay's paintings. Just understand it is more about Ms. Kay and a display of her paintings and musings than tips or techniques for painting in gouache yourself.

John Yardley.......1999-12-17
This is pretty much the only John Yardley book presently available. John is a highly gifted watercolorist. His quick loose style, and focus on light brings his paintings to life. This is an excellent book, full of color prints of many of his paintings. This book is a MUST for any buddying watercolorist.
Book Description
The confusion, losses, and devastation of Alzheimer's disease are familiar to the millions of Americans suffering from the disease and to their family members. Understandably, declining abilities and changing personal characteristics shape our picture of the disease, leading some to refer to the "double death" of Alzheimer's in which the sufferer drifts away long before his or her eventual physical end.
This small, tender volume of 85 photographs and accompanying discussion powerfully shows the limitations of this view. Cathy Stein Greenblat, an internationally respected sociologist and photographer, demonstrates in Alive with Alzheimer's that, while the ravages of the disease are real, Alzheimer's sufferers can do more than survive, they can thrive. Her images, interviews, and observations attest to the possibility of their being "alive" with Alzheimer's far beyond the expectations of the general public and even of many physicians with long experience with the disease.
Greenblat offers a new vision, taking us into a world of life-enhancing institutional care. Nursing homes and similar facilities don't have to be a last resort; as Greenblat shows, with a dedicated and experienced staff and an enriched environment (that includes respect, choices, pets, and music), extraordinary changes can be effected in Alzheimer's patients. Alive with Alzheimer's, the first photographic book on the disease, offers hope and inspiration. Moreover, its vivid, impressive evidence that ongoing stimulation in a good institutional setting can sustain Alzheimer's patients at a far higher level than is generally believed has significant implications for personal and policy decisions.
The new standard of care chronicled in Alive with Alzheimer's will provide hope and inspiration to those touched by the disease. As Dr. Enid Rockwell writes in her Afterword to Greenblat's moving book, "These photographs are extraordinary for practitioners, for family members, for everyone to see what's going on with these people. The stimulation pictured in this book is more powerful than any medication that we will have in our lifetime. . . . They so vividly show us that there are people inside these bodies, people with personalities, who experience emotion, and they show that there is life after Alzheimer's."
Customer Reviews:
I am very moved by this book.......2004-09-20
My mother is one of the patients featured in this book, which gave me more understanding, insight (as well as compassion) for what she and others are going through and the sort of enlightened care that Pomerado and its staff are providing. Besides the words, which have the gift of simplicity yet communicate the essence of Alzheimers, the photographs are marvelous and serve to transport you to that person and place that they are in as well as to teach you about the person being photographed with few if any words.
This book is a gift as are all the people featured in it. Thank you.
moving and helpful book.......2004-08-05
Alive With Alzheimer's is a moving pictorial portrayal of the lives of individuals with Alzheimer's who are living in an innovative residential setting in which the emphasis is on living rather than dying. The pictures do a wonderful job of showing the essential humanity of the victims of the illness, even those in the advanced stages. The text is insightful as well-- I read the book cover to cover twice and found it very uplifting. Definitely worthwhile, especially for those who have loved ones with dementia.
This book will change your view of Alzheimer's.......2004-06-13
I read this book this week and was impressed with how well it captured the spirit of the residents and staff at Silverado. My father has lived there for about a year--my mother did too until her death in February--and the place is truly amazing. Just like the book describes, I have had many chances to sit and talk with residents who didn't at first seem able to carry on a conversation. But with patience and love, you can find a way to enther their world. With the recent death of President Reagan, people should use this book as an opportunity to see what the world of Alzheimer's is like. When I come to Silverado, it is not with the dread so many people feel when visiting a nursing home. Instead, I come into a place filled with love and always have occasion to share a laugh, dance with a resident, or sit and enjoy an ice cream with my father. It is a wonderful place, as the book makes so clear in both pictures and text, and I hope it will encourage other facilities to change their way of dealing with residents.
Alive With Alzheimer's.......2004-06-11
This book was fantastic! It really captured life (real life) with this disease. In fact, it made me feel as though I knew the residents and was appreciating their quality of life along with them. I suppose working in the same setting encourages those thoughts. And, for those who have or are taking care of a loved one now, I imagine they also will be able to relate.
I, as a program director of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, was encouraged to do better at my work, your book was refreshing. I got some ideas and was reminded the importance music has with this disease.
My sister, who has very little knowledge or interaction with people having this disease, read through the book and was touched.
The pictures really did say it all. I liked that you had a number of sequence pictures. I think the book shows the genuine reality of Silverado. The residents are happy, they are excited about life and engaged.

Book Description
This work highlights the coming age of management information systems for all types of executives by focusing on executive information systems, or EIS. Serving as a data-intensive system, an EIS offers a snapshot of a company's past and present operations as a way of predicting the future. In this book, Robert Thierauf provides a complete picture of executive information systems, from an introduction of what these systems are all about, to the hardware, software, and applications that form the basis of an EIS environment. The work is divided into four basic sections. The first provides an overview of executive information systems, discussing the real need for an EIS, the essential characteristics underlying it, and its relationship to prior management information systems. The types of executive decision making typically found in an EIS environment, illustrated with specific examples, are also examined. The second section focuses on the computer hardware and software that is useful within an EIS operating mode, along with on-line databases that assist executives in decision making. The development of executive information systems is covered in section three, which features current approaches for executives and their staffs as well as methods to be followed by the Management Information Systems department. Finally, section four addresses various aspects of working in an EIS environment, including strategic planning, marketing, manufacturing, finance, and personnel. A master case study is presented, and each topic is explored in relation to it. Typical EIS applications are also described for each of the topic areas. With its combination of both EIS theory and practical applications, this work will be a valuable resource for senior executives and MIS professionals as well as for students of management and information systems. Public, academic, and business libraries will also find it to be a useful addition to their collections.

Customer Reviews:
Well Written Book.......2007-06-24
I have been a landlord in the past and am doing it again. This book would have saved me a lot of aggravation if I would have read it years ago. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is full of wisdom no perspective landlord should be without.
Great title - bad book.......2003-10-29
I was hoping for a good source of pragmatic info from someone with landlording experience. Instead I got a small book with a lot filler (same multi-page lease included twice!) and information that seems more like it was plucked from other books than from genuine experience. The "anecdotes" are actually quicky made up stories that do little more than reiterate some point the author already made. All of the info that is here is treated very superficially and without reference to outside sources for more useful explanations.
I wanted a book that filled in holes not in other books. Something that gave me some practical solutions to problems that might be glossed or left out in other books. Information that came from someone who actually ran buildings and wanted to pass on the info. This is just not that book.
Check out ISBN 1580627668 for a much more useful, more real guide.
An adequate quick reference quide with appropriate examples........1998-12-30
Robert Irwin's book is well written with plenty of examples of what to do and what not to do in just about any situation that arises between a tenant and a landlord. The book is well organized, easily referenced, and has wonderful "landlord rules" which are good tips for the active landlord.
