Book Description
From Egypt to Ethiopia, Botswana to Burundi, and Zimbabwe to Cameroon, this landmark book presents the first complete and definitive study of African architecture from antiquity to the present. Featuring hundreds of museum-quality photographs and drawings from archival and modern sources, the book offers architects, architectural and art historians, social scientists, and all those interested in world architecture with an ordinary account of the evolution, transformation, and development of architecture across the African continent. Elleh defines the indigenous, Islamic, and Western roots of African architecture, and goes on to examine how these roots influence the architecture of each region in Africa. The author evaluates historical, traditional, and contemporary architecture by examing the various cultural groups of North, Central, East, South, and Western Africa from ethnic, climatic, political, regional, economic, religious, and historical perspectives. In addition, a final chapter takes a revealing look at modern architecture, urbanism, and urbanization throughout Africa. At once a work of convincing scholarship and a beautifully illustrated tour of African architecture past and present, this is a pioneering book that brings a heretofore rarely examined body of work dramatically to life.

Final Grade: C-.......2007-07-08
Good:
1. How many books have you read on African Architecture?
2. How many books have you read on African Architecture by a person of African descent?
3. The book does not limit African architecture to rural village designs.
4. Neither does it separate Egyptian architecture from African origins.
Bad:
1. It has few good pictures and too many black and white illustrations.
2. Though it includes various aspects of African architecture its main focus is on Ancient Egyptian, North African, and contemporary architecture. Emphasis on West African adobe architecture, Medieval Swahili cities, and Ethiopian architecture was lacking severely, especially considering how much they truly represent the whole continent.
Poor book.......2002-10-01
Dear Sirs,
When I have ordered the book I thought it will be excellent sourse for me before studing some particular topic. But I was disapointed when I read it from the very begining. It is simply poor. African architecture is very rich. It is hard to imagine how the author could write such a poor book. Photos are also not very good. Everyone who understand and can "read" arcitecture would write that there is not enough information even on the subjects which are described in the book.
I would say this book should cost less.
A book that needs to be written better.......2000-08-29
Elleh's effort is well-worthy of praise for its scope, but lacks in scholarly quality. Her triple-heritage theory is interesting but poorly-applied in many instances throughout the book, especially because of the broad timeline the book attempts to address. The images are marvelous, and inclusive, though some are incongrous to the articles they accompany. This is a very basic book, good for a coffee table or an introductory course on the subject, but one I could not recommend for the more serious scholar.
Good content but poorly written.......2000-06-22
This book was a noble effort to shed light on a subject that most people know nothing about, but it misses the mark in literary style. In other words, it would be nice to have for reference, but it's nearly impossible to read. The style is akin to what I'd expect from a high school student writing a research paper. Elleh's triple heritage theory (traditional, Islamic and colonial influences on African styles) appears throughout the book, but never is it defended clearly and cohesively. I'd like to see this book re-written and professionally edited. With the amount of research that Elleh put into this work, the potential is there for a truly great book.
A very necessary book for Architectural academia........1999-10-26
This book moves vernacular architecture from the backwaters of academia to the vangard. I was impressed by the authors academic and 'open' style. He has given the architectural student and professional population the opportunity to both explore African architecture and their own perhaps jaundiced view of the region. Everyone should come out a winner after reading this book. I say give me more!
Customer Reviews:
Decent for the price.......2007-03-05
This unpretentious book will serve most anyone desiring some basic skills in drawing. The author draws competently and simply, and passes on his techniques for sundry subjects such as landscapes, bridges, trees, animals, the face (broken down into its components - eyes, ears, nose, mouth, etc.), the torso, arm, leg, etc. I actually prefer this to books like Draw on the Right Side of the Brain (which is pretty decent though over rated), because it gives techniques for many specific situations. There are better books than Linley's in this respect, however (see below).
A person following and practicing the lessons will, as the title promises, be equipped with the skills to draw anything with some proficiency. This is not a book to turn someone into a Rembrandt; it's more for those who wish to draw as a hobby.
A quibble is that in quite a few places the book 'reassures' the reader that the given subject is easy. My experience in teaching (in an entirely different subject than drawing) is that this does the opposite of reassure and makes students panic: there is no glory in easy subjects and considerable shame in failing at them. On the other hand, when I'd warn my students that a given topic is complicated, they'd bear down and master it.
One of the hardest skills to acquire is a sense of proportion, and people who are down on their abilities to draw a proportioned face, or an accurate landscape, might be surprised that many of these books, including this one, advocate the use of the grid. Top artists, past and present, have used it. Now, if you're allowed a grid, do you really think you can't draw?
For the price, you can hardly go wrong, but since a good deal of effort goes into learning how to draw, I'd recommend something else. The best books on drawing that I've seen are Jack Hamm's and they, too, are very inexpensive.
Drawing the Head and Figure
Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes
These books are exceedingly good. They put the better-known The Natural Way to Draw and Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain to shame.
Best Drawing Book for Beginners or those stuck in a rut.......2006-05-30
I have been trying to learn how to draw for 10 years. I paint and do pastels and watercolors but I have a lot of trouble drawing and it shows in my work. I have bought, read and used over 20 books on drawing, Ruskin, the Keys to Drawing, and the Serria Club book of Drawing and Sketching Nature among them. I have also bought and totally went through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (the orignial and the updated version). Many of these books are excellent; however, none are as good as How to Draw Anything.
These books I have bought on drawing do not just sit on the shelf after I have read a few pages. I have gone through every one of them and I have completed drawing exercise after drawing exercise. I have learned the vocabulary of drawing and I have tried several of the exercises over and over (contour drawing for example) but still my efforts fail to turn out well.
About 3 weeks ago I purchased How to Draw Anything by Mark Linley. Somehow his exercises make more sense to me. A lot of it is copying his drawings of old bridges, trees etc but these exercise actually teach the student what to look for in a landscape (or person or whatever) and make it much simpler to carry over what has been learned in the book to drawing what you see in the outdoors or in a photograph.
Mr. Linley starts out with very simple drawings that are fairly easy to execute but still look good after you get finished. Your time doesn't seem wasted. He is able, in these early lessons, to get across the point of strong pen or pencil work in the foreground and a fading away of the lines to the background. He has an "easy" way to render complex forms (such as trees and bushes). Please do not get me wrong, a person rendering the world in pen and pencil Mr. Linley's way isn't going to be an Ingres when it comes to draftsmenship; however, it is a wonderful way to get going and produce very good drawings in very short order.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to draw and who is having problems either as a beginner or as an old hand at drawing but not getting the results they want. Just plow through the exercises and in a few days you will be able to see the improvement. My wife, who follows my artist endevors, was amazed at the pictures I drew using this method. If you have never tried drawing before start with this book. If you have been drawing but are somehow stuck in a rut and not getting the results you want try Mr. Linley's methods. Over the years I have tried many books when trying to learn or understand something complex and I have discovered that methods of teaching are critical in understanding the subject matter. One author just can't connect (at least with me) and another will make it seem so much simpler. It has been the same with math and other subjects. If I couldn't pick it up from one author I searched for other authors with different outlooks and teaching methods and sooner or later I find one that can actually communicate with me. Hard work at times, but it is worth it. I wish I had started with this book, but better late than never.

Best drawing book ever!!!!.......2005-04-23
I love this book! I have never seen a book like this on drawing. After you read the first few pages you want to go and try it. I am only 14 but i think this is the best drawing book ever. I have used other drawing books but this one is the best. Get this if you are a beginner or an advanced drawer.

"Anyone who can hold a pencil can learn to draw.".......2005-10-16
With these encouraging words author/artist Angela Gair begins this wonderful little gem of a book for beginning artists.
The book introduces the "elements of art" in a very simple and non-overwhelming way with plenty of illustrations. She takes you by the hand and shows you a "plan of attack" for drawing a picture -- breaking the picture down into elements and layers which you add one by one.
The book explores several art themes: Landscapes, Animals, People, Still Life & Interiors and each theme has a "project" that you can do to explore the theme.
Using her idea of "analyzing the line in human forms" I was able to start a sketch of my cat snickers -- by analyzing the lines around him and focusing on "the picture" as if I was looking through a viewfinder (another technique she shares) and began drawing a rough grid to start the drawing. I captured the curve of his spine and his rear paw before he got up -- and will return to the drawing when he returns again to this favorite sitting spot of his.
This is an excellent introduction to drawing for the beginning artist. I plan to buy more books from this author. I feel like it was a "bit of grace" that this book "crossed my path" serendipitously at a local arts and craft store i frequent. Ms. Gair is truly a gifted art teacher that makes art simple and easy to do.

Haven't read this book yet. Got a Barnes and Noble edition by Metro Books with a ISBN 0-7607-5442-X. I hate exclusive and book club editions that mess up my cataloging by ISBN. This looks like a great book and the same as other editions.

Book Description
In the spring of 2000, a man in Oregon hid a box of toys in the woods, posted the geographic coordinates of its location on a Web site, and issued a challenge for others to find it. People used their GPS receivers to find his treasure, and a new game was born. Today over a million people worldwide participate in geocaching, hiding stashes of trinkets in a variety of locations—from a grove of trees to a cliff ledge to the depths of a riverbed—and then inviting others to find them, leave a note, and swap a treasure of their own. In Local Treasures Margot Anne Kelley offers one of the first books on "geocaching," exploring what compels ordinary people across the world to take part in these extraordinary treasure hunts.
Kelley traveled throughout the U.S. to chronicle the sites and stories of geocaching adventures, from the rocky coasts of Maine to the deserts surrounding Las Vegas to the starting point of the Mason-Dixon Line. Each striking, full-color photograph exposes a vision of America quite unlike that presented in a traditional guidebook: truly off the beaten path, these are non-idealized landscapes, often places with special meaning for the players alone. Kelley's accompanying writings explore the world of geocaching communities, their rare ability to integrate new technologies with the natural world, and their complex and often ambivalent relationships to the surveillance technologies that sustain the game. In this era when people are increasingly disconnected from the land that surrounds them, geocaching offers an unusual and technologically savvy vision for the future. Kelley's text is a fascinating examination of a new and creative diversion emerging from the intersection of the virtual world with the real.
Customer Reviews:
From Cache to Coffee Table.......2007-01-10
Margot Anne Kelley reminds us of exactly why we started playing this game in the first place! It's not about the treasures you find in the boxes, it's about the treasures in the world around us. The pictures are beautiful and the stories really draw you to the locations. As an added bonus there's that great sense of camaraderie that we get through the shared experience of geocaching.
This is a great book for cachers (especially those dealing with cabin fever) and also a great way to introduce your non-geocaching friends to exactly what we see in this game.
mapping the intersections.......2006-06-21
This book is an exploration of a new-millennium game; which is to say, it's an exploration of new-millennium humans. And Margot Kelley explores her territory with grace and precision. The book fascinates whether or not the reader is a geocacher because Ms. Kelley so skillfully expresses her own fascination -- not only with geocaching but with the rapidly-changing world that engendered it. With arresting images and insightful stories, Ms. Kelley inspires and includes her readers in the gentle art of Paying Attention. The attention here is on intersections and the trajectories that create them -- the meeting place of latitude and longitude, image and experience, nature and technology, time and place, politics and play, the mundane and the mystical.
Must-Have for Every Geocacher--and Everyone Else.......2006-06-21
Deft mini-essays, a few hundred words each, face off with arresting full-page photographs of the locations that inspired them. Up in one corner, the mathematical analog, exact longitude and latitude of the place you are looking at, for that was how it was discovered, via a game played with hand-held global positioning satellite (GPS)units and the internet, a game called geocaching. Margot Kelley's essays are at once intimate and cosmic, playful and poignant. Highly personal, even confessional, they are interwoven with public policy comments, next-wave scientific facts, and speculative cultural theory. Each photograph is stunning composition in its own right that also speaks its side of a complex dialogue with text. If you are a geocacher, you will feel vindicated and fulfilled. If you are curious about geocaching, you will be educated and intrigued. If you know anyone who is into geocaching, you have found THE perfect gift. But, in truth, this would be a great book without a single reference to the game. This is place-writing at its wisest, each segment adroitly paired with a visual feast, so that the effect of the whole transcends the sum of the parts. LOCAL TREASURES speaks more truth about Americans and our relationship to our environment than any book since Walden Pond.
The Essence of Geocaching.......2006-06-19
As a long-time "geocacher", I have experienced many adventures in geocaching, both alone and with family and friends, all the while having fun without wondering why the sport is so appealing. This book answers that question by capturing the spirit of geocaching in a quiet, meaningful voice. The photographs are exquisite, finely textured and rich in detail. The accompanying text is multi-layered, giving a glimpse of the physical geocache while providing background into circumstances that led the author to that location. This makes for a warm, tender, deeply personal story that touches the heart.
Gorgeous book of American Photos, and more..........2006-05-23
This book would be well worth owning just as a gorgeous collection of American photos: Kelley's photographs capture the spirit of many places that most shots couldn't convey, often thanks to unusual perspectives and compositions. But Local Treasures also tells some interesting stories about the methods of geocaching--and how people use it as a both a hobby and a way to orient themselves to the places they occupy in the world. The photos and stories in this book really manage to invoke a sense of the diversity of places and people across the US, and to give the reader a brief sense of alignment with those places.
Overall, a beautiful array of photos stitched together with a great storytelling voice give a relaxing and worthwhile read.

Book Description
This book brings together three great motifs of the network society: the search for and use of information by individuals and groups; the creation and application of knowledge in organizations; and the fundamental transformation of these activities as they take place on the World Wide Web and corporate intranets. As research endeavors, these streams overlap and share conceptual constructs, perspectives, and methods of analysis. Although these overlaps and shared concerns are sometimes apparent in published research, there have been few attempts to connect these ideas explicitly and identify cross-disciplinary themes. This book is an attempt to fill this void.
Audience: The book's primary audience is faculty and students in masters and doctoral programs in information science, information systems, and management schools. Consultants and organizations designing and implementing intranets and portals will find the book useful in providing research-based insights into how information search and knowledge sharing may be enhanced.
Customer Reviews:
Tacit knowledge, explicit knowledge, cultural knowledge.......2004-10-24
Enterprise integration is a must today and this can be achieved by combining infostructure and infrastructure resources. Choo's prescription here provides a framework for assessment of knowledge management using best business practices in Web-based environments. It, also, facilitates furthering knowledge management studies in relation to return on investment in a corporate culture. To achieve this end a direct route is prescribed in this book. It has to be based on the integration of organizational knowledge, i.e. using Choo's favorite trio: tacit knowledge, explicit knowledge and cultural knowledge.
An over-priced but worthwhile book for academics.......2002-02-27
This book has three separate sections, and though the sections are related they differ in style and approach. The first section, which can be attributed to Professor Choo, pretty much contains the same stuff as in his book "The Knowing Organisation", but condensed and more to the point. If you haven't read TKO there's no need to buy it after having read section one in this book. If you have read TKO, well, section one summarises and explains it to you. Theoretical frameworks regarding information needs, information seeking and information use is covered in Chapter 1, while Chapter 2 discusses the relationship between data, information, and knowledge. Choo also advocated his own typology of organisational knowledge: tacit, explicit, and cultural knowledge. Taken together, section one forms a theoretical foundation for knowledge work, but since not much of it is visible in the rest of the book it is kind of a stand-alone framework.
Section two, which can be traced to the work of Detlor, deals with intranets as a platform for knowledge work (Chapter 3) and discusses how intranets can be designed to support such work (Chapter 4). In my opinion, this is the real contribution of the book. The author(s?) does a good job bringing together lessons from different academic fields and offers many interesting references to related work. Section 2 is thus a gold mine for graduate and PhD students engaged in research efforts. The conclusions are however on a meta level and perhaps a bit difficult for the average business person to apply and appreciate.
Section three, finally, seems to be the result of Turnbull's work examining how people use the Web to find information. Continuing in an academic style, Chapter 5 first guides us through the use of various statistical methods for literature analysis and then presents a number of browsing strategies found in the literature. In Chapter 6, some hands-on results are finally presented in form of bar charts, correlation tables, and other graphics. Although I find this section less interesting, it is the one with the most practical lessons and results and may thus be appreciated by practitioners.
Still, the book is interesting and a worthwhile reading to all academics and ambitious practitioners and had it not been for the outrageous price I would highly recommend it. However, [money]is way too much and approximately 3 to 4 times higher than I would normally pay, especially so when much of the content is available elsewhere (other books, conference proceedings, and journals).
