Book Description
Alvaro Siza (1933) studied at the School of Architecture of the University of Oporto. Between 1955 and 1958 he worked in the studio of Fernando Tavora. he embarked on his professional career with the Boa Nova Restaurant (Leca da Palmeira, 1963). In this initial phase, his works combined modern typology with the vernacular tradition. Nonetheless, he constantly returns to clear volumes, like the great white parallellepiped of Avelino Duarte House (Ovar, 1985), which brings together all his earlier experience of housing typologies, including his major intervention in this area Quinta da Malagueira (Evora, 1977). Since the eighties, he has been commissioned to carry out a wide variety of porjects, ranging from the Santiago de Compostela Museum of Contemporary Art (1993) to the School of Education in Setubal (1992).
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Overview.......2006-10-30
If you want to get a fine overview of Siza's works, this book might be just fine. It inculdes a short presentation of all of his works, the major buildings are featured more extensively. There are plenty of Siza's beautiful sketches and abstract line drawings might clarify his projects sufficiently (how could the editor oversee that the faculty of Porto is mirrored?). It is remarkable that most of the photos do not present the the projects in the just finished state, but how they look like right now, making plain how gracefully Siza's buildings get older. I have to agree that Le Croquis might show his major buildings more in depth and documents far more Siza's own point of view with two long interviews, however this edition is for sure worth the money.
A good book of the architect of the moment!.......2001-03-17
Some people say Siza is the architect of the white! Probably, if whe can understand that the white colour of his facades is the consequence of his absolutly control of plans and forms. He is a genius! This book is a good way to show almost all works of Siza. For me there is only one book that is better than this one: "Alvaro Siza - the book, from ElCroquis".But anyway, buy this book if you want to understand the genius of Alvaro Siza.

Leicaphiles, take note..........2001-02-13
A very handy book to be carried about when buying used Leica equipment. The book does just what its title says. I have been a Leicaphile (and Hasselblad fan as well) for many years. I find it very enjoyable just to sit, read and learn about these fine photographic machines. I received it only today and already am hooked.
Identifying Leica Cameras - Review.......2000-01-06
Excellent authoritative and comprehensive book that accomplishes exactly what the title says. I use it almost daily.
A good book despite errors and omitions........1999-01-22
This book contains a good deal of information, but it is poorly organized and edited. There is a large amount of typographical errors and some of the specs are not even listed. For example, one of the cameras had its strap lug type listed while another did not. The author did not list the dimentions of the cameras, nor the weight of the cameras(grams, ounces, drams, no weight measurement). Finally, and most importantly, he doesn't tell a story with any of these cameras. Yes, there is alot of pictures of these rare beauties, but its boring. Its hard to believet that in his reaserch that the people involved in their development did not tell him any funny anecdotes. Its boring and a shame.
A great reference for anyone interested in Leicas.......1998-11-25
This book is invaluable at camera shows, garage and estate sales, and when traveling. It has just about all the information you need to identify a Leica by appearance and serial number. The author also includes grades so you can determine the rarity of a camera. The sections on special issue and military Leicas are especially interesting.
Combine this book with the Leica Price Guide and you can't lose!
Customer Reviews:
Well researched and concise.......2000-01-01
Mr. Sartorius has produced a concise and easy to read book. He has made a reasonable attempt to categorise the lenses in a logical and well-illstrated manner. The book largely succeeds at the difficult task of covering the myriad variations of Leica lenses, especially the screw-mount and early M-mount lenses. There is a rarity grading system and best of all, the lens diagrams of the featured lenses are provided. I recommend this book heartily to beginners and keen Leicaphiles alike. What you get is an excellent reference for the price.

Book Description
Illustrator Tommy Castillo makes a study of the classic myths and ancient tales that have both fascinated and frightened people throughout history. Taking a decidedly ?gothic horror? look at such story-time staples as ?Little Red Ridinghood?, ?Alice in Wonderland?, and ?The Wizard of Oz?, Castillo crafts traditional fairy tales into something much darker. With an obvious and overwhelming affection for dragons, Tommy brings these legendary reptiles to life in a myriad of styles and fashions. This book also contains a brilliant showcase of sketches and designs that feature the artist?s greatest labors of love.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for anyone who likes fantasy, art and dark humor.......2006-01-12
This out of print and hard to find book is fantastic! Tommy does an excellent job detailing some of the most creative interpretations of popular fairy tales to date. The dragons look so real that they almost jump out of the page at you. If you're a fan of fantasy then you must get this book. Tommy is definitely following the paths of Frazetta, Boris, Brom, and Wrightson. Get this collectible now before it sky rockets in price.
THE FINE DETAIL WORK OF TOMMY CASTILLO.......2005-11-01
Dragons, Myths, and Mayhem isn't the typical book from SQP. It's not an erotic book of pinup art (although there are some beautiful women inside, that's for sure), neither is it a straight collection of fantasy art. Rather, this collection of work by Tommy Castillo presents the artists own, often warped, take on popular fairy tales and mythology done with a decided edge. Castillo was unknown to me but I found I really enjoyed, and also got a good laugh from some of his bizarre interpretations.
For example there is the piece called "Oz" depicting a tin man who did receive a heart, but it was a black heart as he goes on a murderous rampage with his axe, attacking his former comrades. Twisted to say the least! In "Red Riding Hood" the roles are reversed as Red is badder than the "big bad wolf" ever was as he is literally torn to shreds by the maniacal Red. There's a lot of fun pieces just like these in this 64 page collection. Castillo also gives his take on Greek and Norse Mythology with pieces featuring beasts such as the Hydra, Medusa, the Fates, Orpheus entering the underworld realm of Hades. "Thor Vs. the Midgard Serpent" features the Norse God of Thunder, looking far different than the Marvel Comics hero, battling the fabled Midgard Serpent with his flaming, mystical hammer, Mjolnir. Castillo also illustrated each of the Seven Deadly Sins including Pride illustrated as a Liche, that undead mage who clings to life for centuries using arcane necromancy. Rage is depicted as a battle-crazed Viking warrior. I especially loved Castillo's sexy rendering of Lillith, the first woman and vampire.
The last part of the collection displays many of Castillo's Dragon illustrations and few do Dragons as good as Castillo does. A sinister Ash Dragon smolders forth from the body of a Wizard who's just had his head cut off; An Armored Dragon is ready for battle with full plate mail on his face; and then there is my favorite dragon, the Franken-Dragon. This great drawing features a horrific dragon, put together in a lab from various pieces of other dragons. Castillo's meticulous line work is phenomenal. I'm always fascinated by artists like Castillo who put so much detail and time into their work. The time to complete these works must be staggering!
A different kind of book from SQP but outstanding as always.

Even for the novice!.......2007-01-12
Great information about everything there is to know about fishing. The Foghorn Camping book complements it well.
California Fishing: Complete Guide to Fishing.......2006-01-17
This is a "must have" book. I always have the book in my truck when I leave on a fishing trip. It is well laid out and very informative and just about every fishing hole in the state. I've seen Tom several times and purchased his books at the local fishing expositions and he has signed every copy.
Suggestions worked........2005-09-21
After reading the fishing suggestions for Big Bear Lake, I used a lure that was suggested for this lake, namely, a rooster tail, and hooked a beautiful two pound trout. I have always used a needlefish lure until now. You know what I'll use in the future! We plan to fish in the High Sierra's next year and this book will be my bible.
Great fishing guide.......2004-06-12
I have Mr. Steinstra's camping book and this is done in a similar vein. He rates each of the fishing spots on a 1-10 scale. It is a delight to read the descriptions on places I have been or places I may never get to.
Please note that this is not really a book for beginners. The tips and location details are not tutorials on fishing, but assume you have knowledge of the techniques discussed.

Book Description
California Rivers and Streams provides a clear and informative overview of the physical and biological processes that shape California's rivers and watersheds. Jeffrey Mount introduces relevant basic principles of hydrology and geomorphology and applies them to an understanding of the differences in character of the state's many rivers. He then builds on this foundation by evaluating the impact on waterways of different land use practices--logging, mining, agriculture, flood control, urbanization, and water supply development.
Water may be one of California's most valuable resources, but it is far from being one we control. In spite of channels, levees, lines and dams, the state's rivers still frequently flood, with devastating results. Almost all the rivers in California are dammed or diverted; with the booming population, there will be pressure for more intervention.
Mount argues that Californians know little about how their rivers work and, more importantly, how and why land-use practices impact rivers. The forceful reconfiguration and redistribution of the rivers has already brought the state to a critical crossroads. California Rivers and Streams forces us to reevaluate our use of the state's rivers and offers a foundation for participating in the heated debates about their future.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Comprehensive Book on California Rivers.......2006-12-14
California Rivers and Streams: the conflict between fluvial processes and land use, Dr. Jeffrey F. Mount, 1995, University of California Press, 359 pages
California geologists, engineers, environmental planners, and the general public will enjoy reading this comprehensive book on California rivers. The author is Dr. Jeffrey Mount, who holds the Roy J. Shlemon Chair of Geology at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Mount is the Director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis. He has formerly served on the Reclamation Board within the California Resources Agency.
With a heightened sense of public concern about flooding, water supply, levee repair, fish habitat, and river restoration, this book on California rivers is the best general primer that is currently available. Although not designed as a textbook, California teachers may find it suitable for introductory courses because of its comprehensive scope and highly readable narrative.
The book is divided into two parts. Part 1, How Rivers Work, includes: Chapter 1, Introduction to the rivers of California; Chapter 2, Water in motion, Chapter 3, A river at work ¯ sediment entrainment, transport, and deposition; Chapter 4, The shape of a river; Chapter 5, Origins of river discharge; Chapter 6, Sediment supply; Chapter 7, River network and profile; Chapter 8, Climate and the rivers of California; Chapter 9, Tectonics and geology of California's rivers.
Part 2, Learning the Lessons: Land Use and the Rivers of California, includes: Chapter 10, Rivers of California ¯ the last 200 years; Chapter 11, Mining and the rivers of California; Chapter 12, Logging California's watersheds; Chapter 13, Food production and the rivers of California; Chapter 14, A primer on flood frequency ¯ how much and how often? Chapter 15, The urbanization of California's rivers; Chapter 16, The damming of California's rivers; and Chapter 17, The future ¯ changing climate, changing rivers.

Best book for anyone living near or any way connected to H20.......2001-03-14
This book will answer any questions you have and then answer all the questions you are too dense to think of. Anyone living in California should be forced to read this. River runners also benefit from this book that shows the correct fleuvial processes, unlike many kayaking/rafting books. Read it, get on the water and then fight for the rivers!
Great review of how rivers work with a sense of humor.......1999-04-27
This is a subperb review of how rivers systems work and how man-made changes effect these systems. Perfect for the interested layperson interested in earth science. The second half of this book covers the major watersheds of California.
Best book on how rivers work, not just for California........1999-03-26
I am a hydrologist and a water lawyer practicing in Washington DC -- this is the book I give to clients and friends to explain how rivers work and what people do to them. It assumes an intelligent reader but no background is required to get the main points. While its title and focus is California, the lessons are applicable throughout the country. Great book.
Great for the layman interested rivers & the environment.......1999-03-03
This book is perfect for the layperson interested in rivers as part of the world around us. Explains the mechanics of how rivers work and how they shape the environment around. Describes how and why rivers don't do what we want them to, even when we spend millions on extensive diversions and flood control. Jeff Mounts great sense of humor makes the subject alive and interesting what is often presented as dry and acedemic.
Customer Reviews:
Quite good..........2000-07-31
This book is quite good in that it has detailed commentary on a few of the bigger, well-known streams in California. I'm a bit disappointed that he did not include any commentary on other streams that are actually quite productive with large fish (I own another of Sunderland's books and I know he's aware of other "blue ribbon" streams).
Anyway, it's a good book... but it only really covers a few rivers/streams while leaving many out.

Customer Reviews:
wish I was fishin.......2007-03-25
You gotta love Stienstra,a lifetime of info on hundreds of fishin spots
Must Have Book.......2002-12-31
I've seen a number of California fishing books but this one is simply the best. Whether you are flyfishing or using spinning tackle, you want to know the lay of the land, where to fish, when to go, how to get there, who to talk to. This book answers all those things. It is an excellent comprehensive introduction to the fishable waters of California. Excellent maps, directions, and local guides/services for further advice. It breaks down all the areas of California into discrete geographic segments then gives detailed information on the area.
It is clear that Stienstra is an experienced fisherman whether it is on the fly, lures, or bait. This book is for the true fisherman and covers all the offshore, inshore, and freshwater fishing available throughout California. I cannot recommend this book enough. There are so many bad books on fishing and flyfishing, where the authors spout on and on about their theories and thoughts. This is a book that is more like a reference guide and is an essential resource. The author is very well versed in freshwater and saltwater fishing and the writing is straightforward, with opinions registered when they are needed.
Love this book!.......2001-10-19
This book is a must have for anyone fishing in the state of California. I wish Tom would write one for every state. I don't fish any body of water in California until I look it up in this book. However, I agree with Alex. Tom really should write more about SHORE fishing. We don't all have boats.
Thanks Tom.......2000-10-10
When I first moved to California 9 years ago I picked this up and have worn out my copy. A tremendously helpful reference that has introduced me to some of the most wonderful fishing spots I've ever enjoyed. There are many more I've read about that I can't wait to try.
Tom misses some but I learned a bunch.......2000-07-13
Great book for the average fisherman who didn't grow up in Mt. Shasta, Calif. Tom raves about the fishing in Lake Siskiyou, not realizing that the dam ruined some of the best stream fishing I have ever seen. Of course, that was 30 or so years ago. Still, around that area, and I'm not telling where, there are still native trout in small streams located on the Mt. Eddy side. When I say native, I don't mean real native. Those Mt. Eddy lakes and streams were planted years ago, mostly by the CCC. In fact, my father, Eugene Babcock, planted the Mumbo Lakes Basin by mule train when he was with the CCC. I'm now 56 and those easy hikes into the Mumbo Lakes Basin are now hard hikes. If you head to Dobkins or Durney or Eddy Crater lakes without proper gear and physical fitness, you are headed for trouble. Otherwise, this is a great book with true fishing guidelines for Siskiyou, Modoc and Plumas counties. Tom, quit giving away my favorite fishing places.....
