Book Description
Arquitectonica is one of the most prestigious international firms practicing today. Based in Miami, it now has offices in Los Angeles, Paris, Manila, Lima, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. This monograph covers the firm's groundbreaking work of the past 20 years, documenting recent work with insightful project descriptions, lush full-color photographs, and representative architectural plans. Early on, Arquitectonica virtually created a new Miami with their signature modernism, in which the International Style is brought to life with color and vibrancy. They have since taken their work global, with major projects worldwide. Their high-style modern architecture appeals to private and public clients alike, and has resulted in large retail projects in Hong Kong, a performing arts center in Dijon, France, and hotels in New York City and Asia as well as a variety of work in South America.
Beth Dunlop's introductory essay traces the firm's work from early pivotal condominium towers that brought Arquitectonica to prominence in the 1970s up to projects being built today. Compiled by two of the firm's founding partners, Laurinda Spear and Bernardo Fort-Brescia, this monograph will be the definitive English language book in print on Arquitectonica.

Freelancers are an isolated lot. Working from home offices around the world, they may be experts on science, fashion, or mountain biking, but they're often out of the loop about standard publishing practice. For beginners, this is doubly true. Time and experience brings perspective, but the novice freelancer often hasn't a clue as to whether he or she is being offered a fair deal. National Writers Union to the rescue. The group polled, compiled, and generally stormed the hallowed editorial ground where angels fear to inquire. With National Writers Union Guide to Freelance Rates & Standard Practice you'll get the scoop on book contracts, ghostwriting, literary magazine rates, journalism practices, technical writing, corporate communications, and how the Internet fits in. Excellently researched and beautifully written, this is a precious reference.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative, even for 2003.......2003-07-22
This book was very helpful to me as I am beginning my freelance writing career. All genres of writing are covered, and information such as rates and contracts are included. This book is a must for anyone starting out in the freelance business.
Amazon.com
A national glossy offers to pay you 25 cents a word for your article. A major daily newspaper demands Web rights in perpetuity along with the usual first North American serial rights. Your book contract includes an indemnification clause should any lawsuits result from your work. Sounds dubious. But you're a freelance writer, and you need work, right? Guess what--"good, reliable writers are hard to find." Empower yourself with a copy of the National Writers Union's Freelance Writers' Guide. You'll soon be demanding--and commanding--higher fees, better royalty rates, and more control over your work. For each field (books, journalism, electronic publishing, technical writing, corporate writing, instructional writing, writing for performance, the literary market, and academic writing), the book includes information on how business is generally conducted, how the union would like to see it conducted, and the likely attainable compromise. Articles by veteran freelancers and other professionals report from the frontlines. (We defy any over-30 freelance journalist not to be lured by Keith Watson's compelling argument in favor of corporate writing: "A steadily employed freelance writer [makes] five times what a freelance journalist earn[s] in a year," Watson finds. "And freelance business writers [are] treated with much greater respect.")
Throughout the book, a strong case is made for membership in the National Writers Union. Members' benefits included a magazine pay-rates database (with numbers submitted by writers, not editors), contract advising, grievance resolution, a group health-insurance plan, and a "media perils" insurance policy (for those indemnification clauses that just won't go away). --Jane Steinberg
Customer Reviews:
Probably not the first freelancing book you should read..........2004-05-23
I finally finished up the last freelance writing book I had checked out from the library. This one is the Freelance Writers' Guide put out by the National Writers Union. And all I can really say is "eh"...
It's a series of chapters written by different authors on various issues related to the publishing industry. Because the NWU is a group advocating the rights of writers, the tone and direction is more militant and confrontational than most of the other books I've read. There is plenty of "we believe this is grossly unfair to..." type statements scattered throughout, and it seemed to get a bit old after awhile. But conversely, if you are a freelancer trying to make a living at this, I suppose you have far more at stake here than I do.
Information you should know, but probably not the first book on how do do freelance writing that you want to read. Little instruction on how, and more emphasis on running your business.
A Primer for Neophyte Freelance Writers.......2001-09-26
The problem I have always had with freelancing was placing a fair value on my work. In the more than 12 years I have been doing this I have found the organizations that employ freelance writers are diverse and the work they contract varies.
It seems impossible to develop standards for the broad range of opportunities, that I as freelance writer find myself confronting.
This volume attempts to fill that void. It attempts to give the creator benchmarks by which to judge the market marketplace. It discusses working conditions and general pay rates. Everything is done in broad ranges and
It has great section on copyright protections, contracts, negotiation techniques, business organization and financial management.
The book is a broadbased primer; I was looking for specific answers to specific problems.

Book Description
This comprehensive guide shows how photography became possible: from the early experiments with light, to sophisticated camera equipment and the stunning work of famous contemporary photographers.
Highly illustrated throughout in colour and black and white, the reader is taken on a fascinating photographic tour through history. Whether you are a student or dedicated enthusiast, this book will further your understanding of photography.
Written as an introductory text, the book is divided into two main halves. The first half deals with the main technical developments and describes the groundbreaking work of inventors that eventually led to the capture and permanent storage of an image. Developments in camera technologies are also described - from portable camera obscuras to modern day compacts and sophisticated electronic systems.
As the technical aspects of photography evolved, so too did its application. Photographers realised they could express a point of view, or use the medium as a language. For some this meant a romantic portrayal of a subject, whilst others documented the reality of situations, like war or poverty, or became obsessed with the visual appearance of subject shapes and forms. The second half of the book concentrates on what and why photographs were taken - showing how technique has become a means to an end, particularly in the hands of artists.
The late Michael Langford FIIP, FRPS was the former Photography Course Director at the Royal College of Art, London. He acted as external assessor for several schools of photography, was past chairman of The Society for Photographic Education, and an advisor to national examination boards for photography. He also wrote hundreds of articles for British and American magazines and was the author of three other best-selling textbooks for Focal Press: 'Basic Photography', 'Advanced Photography' and 'Starting Photography'.

A complete, visually stunning, overview with over 200 illustrations to inspire you!

Customer Reviews:
The Story of Photography: How it grew to be an Art.......2000-03-25
This fascinating story of how photography developed from a technical invention to a foremost art should be in the library of everyone who is interested in how our world came into being. Photography not only shows us the world, it helps us to interpret it; and this book clarifies how that came about. It traces the accomplishments of the inventors and their inventions, as well as those who use photography as their art or profession. In addition, it contains an excellent glossary; and a helpful Timeline, relating technical developments, photographers and movements, and historical events. This concise book is liberally illustrated, and contains a summary at the end of each chapter. For those who would like to apply what they have learned, there are also assignments that clarify the subjects. Overall, this book is a highly informative and enjoyable read.

Customer Reviews:
funny book but lacks some of its original comics.......2000-01-25
When I was a child growing up in the 80's, I had bought the 1982 version of "Kiss her, you blockhead!". I must have read it 50 times! It was definitely a "5 stars". It was twice as big as this 90's version and had many more comics that included Snoopy as the flying ace and Linus' younger brother Rerun, as well as some other funny pages. Somewhere along the line I had misplaced the original book, so I recently bought another copy. Well I was dissapointed after reading it once to notice that there were many pages from the original book missing in this edition. I was wondering if anyone had an answer as to why some of those original comics would be omitted from this?

Book Description
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is at the center of the conflict between America’s demand for oil and nature at its most pristine. Three decades before the battle over oil development began, a group of visionary conservationists launched a controversial campaign to preserve a remote corner of Alaska. Their goal was unprecedented—to protect an entire ecosystem for future generations. Among these conservationists were Olaus and Margaret Murie, who became icons of the wilderness movement.
Last Great Wilderness chronicles their fight and that of their compatriots, tracing the transformation of this little-known expanse of mountains, forest, and tundra into a symbolic landscape embodying the ideals and aspirations that led to passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964.
Customer Reviews:
This is a truly wonderful book.......2007-03-09
While focused on the ANWR, this eloquent work has broad application. Kaye's careful analysis of what it took to mobilize disparate interests to reach a common goal, and of the constant attention that must be paid even after "success" is reached to avoid the same pro-development forces rewinding the clock, is instructive to every grassroots effort to protect our precious wild places. Well done at every level, and urgently needed as an organizing guide.
It's a top, recommended pick.......2006-09-24
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has for decades been at the center of the conflict between American needs for oil and nature's preservation, yet until now little has been provided in the way of a comprehensive history of how the Refuge came to be. LAST GREAT WILDERNESS: THE CAMPAIGN TO ESTABLISH THE ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE covers this history, from the early visionaries who set forth to save an entire ecosystem to the battles which led to the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. It's a top, recommended pick for any interested in wilderness preservation in general and Arctic or oil issues in particular.

Fine Account of People and Place.......2006-08-02
Establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was an epic struggle in conservation and remains a touchstone for many of us that prefer a hearty dose of wildness. In this book by Roger Kaye, the reader gains an appreciation of the place rightfully called the Last Great Wilderness, but perhaps more importantly we learn about the coalition of scientists, sportsmen, and wilderness lovers who were profoundly touched by this wild corner of Alaska and how they struggled to protect it.
The people involved in the campaign to protect what would become the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge read like a who's who of the early conservation movement. Among those described are the likes of Bob Marshall, Aldo Leopold, Olaus Murie, Mardy Murie, George Collins, and A. Starker Leopold. In those early days, no one knew what special designation was fitting for such land or which agency should manage it, let alone how to convince Congress or the President to act on its behalf.
One of the great lessons of this book is that despite long odds, persistence and dedication eventually pay off. Virginia Wood and Celia Hunter, two early Alaska advocates for protection, captured what I am certain was broad sentiment among conservationists at that time and even today, they wrote: "conservation gets so many setbacks...it is easy to get discouraged and feel that individuals or small groups are impotent in the machinations of `bigness' that plague the modern world."
Today, we are the beneficiaries of their unselfish vision and dedication. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is indeed the last great wilderness, stretching for more than 19 million acres - about 9 times the size of Yellowstone National Park - plus adjoining parks on the Canadian side. Roger Kaye's fine book reminds us not only why such an area was protected but why it is vital that we not lose this vision of a place where nature still plays out her natural rhythms in tune to forces yet only partially understood by scientists and philosophers.
The Definitive History of the Establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.......2006-07-31
As conservationists continue the prolonged struggle to protect the Arctic Refuge from oil development and other encroachments, the epic story of the campaign to establish the original Arctic National Wildlife Range, documented in Last Great Wilderness, now provides new inspiration and deeper understanding of why the Refuge should remain protected. This is an invaluable resource for all who will face the battles that lie ahead because in revealing the idealism and values upon which the Arctic Refuge was founded, it provides the most persuasive arguments for keeping it wild. While Last Great Wilderness is a thoroughly researched and authoritative history of the conflict, it is at the same time an absorbing, hard-to-put-down story. Color and black and white historical photos lend interest.
Last Great Wilderness shows how conservation pioneers George Collins, Lowell Sumner, Olaus and Mardy Murie, Starker Leopold, Justice William O. Douglas, and Sigrud Olson united with Ginny Wood, Celia Hunter and other Alaskans to forge a highly effective strategy of grass roots action on a national scale. Their successful struggle set a number of milestones in conservation history: establishment of the nation's first vast ecosystem-scale conservation unit and the first administered as an adventuring ground--a place for the kind of challenging, self-reliant, and exploratory journeys that Bob Marshall had extolled. The Arctic Range exemplified the wild values and recreational opportunities its advocates soon succeeded in enshrining in the wilderness Act of 1964. The victory laid the groundwork for the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA).
While Last Great Wilderness is about what happened in the past, like any history, it was written to serve the future. For those who believe the vision, values, and ideals that led to the Arctic Refuge's establishment should guide its future stewardship, Last Great Wilderness will be an invaluable guide. And for those interested in the evolution of the wilderness movement, and especially its influence upon Alaskan conservation efforts, this book is a must-read.
A PhD in wilderness studies, Roger Kaye has been the Arctic Refuge's wilderness specialist and pilot since 1985.
Last Great Wilderness is a Great Read.......2006-07-30
"Last Great Wilderness is the story of the beliefs and values, the ideas and idealism, and the hopes and concerns for the future that inspired the leaders of the campaign and many of their followers. (LGW, review copy, p. xv) Because the national campaign for establishment covered the period from 1950-1960, Arctic NWR serves also as tracer for the evolution of the Wilderness concept and the 1964 legislation establishing America's National Wilderness Preservation System. The Arctic NWR campaign, in its broadest context, involved many famous names in environmental conservation annals--Olaus and Margaret "Mardie" Murie, George Collins, Lowell Sumner, A. Starker Leopold, F. Fraser Darling, Howard Zahnizer, and others. The foundational vision came from Collins and Sumner, but the Muries helped steer the campaign at critical periods and obtained broad support for the proposal in Alaska, a feat worthy of Hercules.
Make no mistake; Last Great Wilderness will help readers understand the significance of this largest and most threatened refuge in our U.S. Refuge System. The book presents the hopes and dreams of the visionaries who worked so hard and so well for its creation. It presents the compromises that had to be made, and it gives context to the International, scientific, wilderness, fish and wildlife, cultural, and landscape-level ecological values for which the refuge stands, thereby creating a preeminent symbol of freedom, "...freedom from the crowding and pollution of our cities, freedom to continue, unhindered and forever if we are willing, the particular story of Planet Earth unfolding here--freedom for us as well who need to come to the few out-of-the-way places still remaining where we can breathe freely, be inspired, and understand a little of the majestic story of evolution... ."

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land
ASIN: 1930700032 |
Book Description
Author-photographer Kennan Ward unveils true adventures in the wilderness of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northern Alaska. The Last Wilderness documents the remote wilderness, wild plants, scenic rivers and rarely seen wildlife. The adventure starts in 1987 with updates through summer 2001. The book concerns the mostt contraversial and debated lands in North America. "Perhaps more important than wildlife numbers is the fact that the refuge is one of the last places on earth where human impact is nearly non-existent. It is a place where nature's interactions are still intact, where wilderness endures. Kennan Ward's photographs provide potent testimony that the Ardtic Refuge is a trule exceptional place." Yvon Chouinard, Owner & Founder Patagonia, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful project - Thank you to the Wards!.......2003-09-12
What a beautiful celebration of an area under threat. Thank you to the Wards for their focus and drive. We hope to see more work from these talented artists.
Nature Performs.......2001-12-29
It is amazing how this book gives you a personal feel for the animals and their environment. The wildlife is perfectly comfortable and nature performs for Kennan Ward. He has the connection and a gift for capturing nature in its most potent moments. This book is a work of love and pristine beauty! If this land is allowed to be exploited for oil, this could be the last record of this incredible wilderness.
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: to Be or Not to Be.......2001-11-29
Kennan Ward's book contains stunning photographs of the land, plants, and animals of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Mr. Ward writes from his personal experiences as a photographer and naturalist. Kennan published this book to help keep this pristine wilderness area a place of incredible beauty and wildlife diversity. His book makes a strong visual argument for the case of preserving this wildlife area from oil drilling. He does this by showing photographs of the significant environmental impact of oil companies in Alaska. I hope this book will not be a reminder of what the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge was like, but instead, what it will continue to be for future generations of people and wildlife that come to this "last wilderness." I would highly recommend this book to any person who would like to learn more about the wildlife and environmental issues pertaining to the Refuge.
A World Worth Saving.......2001-10-29
Beautiful photo essay on the Alaska Wilderness with a hopeful bequest to future generations of animals and all who love America's wild places.
An Important National Asset!.......2001-09-25
So many Americans know so little about this great gift our forefathers have given us - The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The fact remains that this coastal plain supports the highest density of mammals and birds in the arctic. Kennan Ward's book brilliantly helps us understand what's at stake here. The photographs alone are priceless! We believe that it would be a sin to rob future generations of the opportunity to understand this virgin land. Anyone who cares about America's heritage should take time to read this masterwork and understand what's at stake.
