Architects Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto have been generating some of the most provocative thinking in the field for nearly twenty years. With Atlas of Novel Tectonics, Reiser+Umemoto hone in on the many facets of architecture and illuminate their theories with great thought and simplicity. The Atlas is organized as an accumulation of short chapters that address the workings of matter and force, material science, the lessons of art and architectural history, and the influence of architecture on culture (and vice versa). Reiser+Umemoto see architectural design as a series of problem situations, and each chapter is an argument devoted to a specific condition or case.
Influenced by a wide range of fields and phenomena Brillat-Savarin's classic The Physiology of Taste is one of their primary models the authors provide a cross-section of thinking and inspiration. The result is both an elucidation of the concepts that guide Reiser+Umemoto through their own design process and a series of meditations on topics that have formed their own sense as architects. Atlas of Novel Tectonics offers an entirely fresh perspective on subjects that are generally taken for granted, and does so with a welcome punch and energy.

Difficult Writing vs Clear Expression.......2007-06-07
This book gets lots of play right now in (big "A") Architecture schools. I'm a firm believer that if your thoughts are clear, your writing is clear. This book embarks on many dialectical examples that are explained with too much "difficult writing" for its own good. Grad students of the world, beware the three DDDs that inspire some of this writing: Deleuze, Derrida and Delanda. They plow enormous fields in complicated patterns and only yield a kernel or two. Ironically, I admire Reiser + Umemoto as architects and am looking forward to a book on their more recent work.
The Sinews of Design.......2007-05-07
An unxpectedly fine book on architectural theory that's rooted not in politics or aesthetics or lit-crit theory, but in the worlds of physics and engineering-- a look at architecture and architectural possibilities based on the sinews of buildings rather than the ideology of architects. I'm an historian by training, and an aficionado of architecture and design theory. Reiser + Umemoto have created a small book that offers a view of postmodern architecture seen through the lens of the physically possible. Anyone who wants to imagine new cities and new styles of building needs to consider the sheer physical constraints of design, and this book is a fine place to start.

An Audio-lingual Textbook Posing as Communicative.......2003-02-11
As an ESL teacher of six years and after studying the field of TESOL in graduate programs for 3 years, I have to say that this book is just another one to toss on the pile of ESL garbage materials. All the exercises are simple grammar substitution drills. The book attempts to cover too many forms in too few lessons. There are no explanations of grammar and no exploration opportunities to make such an inductive approach useful. Furthermore, I found the characters represented in the book to smack of stereotyping to the very point of racism. Do your students a favor and DO NOT adopt this book. If you must adopt it, make sure it's for the highschool audience it was written for and not for adult learners. I was forced to teach this book to adult learners for 5 years and even the very semi-literate beginners were not naive to the condescension involved in such a choice. I think the Northstar Series is much more communicative, and appropriate for adults.
Best book for learning English.......2000-03-09
Okay, I am an English teacher in Korea and I have been forced to teach many horrible books, but Exploring English is not one of these. This book is imaginative and fresh. The material is very well presented with many additional suggestions for expanding the material. The students enjoy this book. The best thing about this book is that it is simple to use and does not require an additional work book. I would encourage any teacher to use this series in the EFL/ESL classroom.

I think Scott is great I saw him during the Ediburgh Fringe and boy is he funny. I saw an article in the Guardian about him the other day 21/11/00 sometime he is a real talented man and quite clearly funny and articulate I hope he is bringing another book out soon. What can I say? It's Fowl!.......2000-04-26
Firstly, I should like to point out that my mother flipped when she found this book hidden under my bed. It is full of the shear brilliance that only Capurro can transcribe to paper. The story centres on an aging comedian called Tom whow falls for young Taylor - the man of his dreams! Look, the back of the book says it all: "You'll never look at a roast chicken in quite the same way again". This book is fantastic and a recommended buy.

I loved this book. There was so much information about the Appalachian culture and what they do things a certain way. The stories about funerals was so funny that I was laughing out loud. I am so glad I read this book and as going to start the next book right away. You will not be sorry that you read this book.
A well-written debut with a great sense of place.......1999-07-01
FOWL PLAY is the kind of well-written, satisfying average mystery that keeps us one-a-day mystery addicts going. I would give it a "C+" which is not a bad grade for a first novel; Patricia Tichenor Westfall is better at her craft than many much more experienced writers. The four aspects of this small town mystery that particularly interested me were her sleuth Molly West (an intelligent and believable 50+), her elder characters (especially the admirable and independent 70+ Louella), her never-cutesy use of Appalachian folk culture (yes, sometimes Molly's husband Ken gets a little talky, but it's interesting talk and believable coming from a Soc prof), and her portrayal of the lives of the working poor. I look forward to reading future books in this series.
The education I received was as enjoyable as the mystery........1999-06-24
Molly West is an ex-Chicagoan accountant, transplanted to southern Ohio due to her husband's position as a sociology professor at the nearby college. Although they have lived there for fifteen years, they are still considered outsiders by the Appalachian community. Although not an outstanding mystery, I found myself engrossed in learning more about the Appalachian culture. Ms Westfall enlightens the reader about the ways of the hill people. Her next book, Mother of the Bride, also a Molly West mystery, is even more enjoyable.
